Jonathan was in his office, placing a rook and two pawns on his chessboard.
"Three down, seven to go," he said, folding his arms. "The infamous Toothless and a pair of twins, three of Hiccup Dragon Rider Pirates." He then looked at the Drake, who was standing in front of his desk. "Drake, go to the break and interrogate the prisoners."
"But… Commander, my team and I are already under orders from you to survey and secure the dining hall."
Jonathan frowned. "You are?"
"You told me that pirates are always hungry so sooner or later they would show up at the mess hall," Drake reminded him.
He had so on his mind the Jonathan completely forgot his previous orders. "I'll handle the mess hall. Things are bound to be screwy around there. Jessica told me they got some new cooks from headquarters."
"And how should I handle the pirates' interrogation?" Drake asked as Jonathan rose to his feet.
"I'll leave that up to you."
Toothless and the twins were sharing a cell, and their hands were bound. The weapons having confiscated and placed in the opposite cell, and they were under constant supervision.
"Are you guys just going to sit there and staring us?" Tuffnut asked.
"Yeah, don't you have anything better to do?" Ruffnut asked.
Toothless rolled his eyes. "They were ordered to watch the prisoners, meaning us. Let them watch, we should try and get some shut-eye."
Sadly before they could get any shut-eye, Drake, the right interrogate them. "Open the cell."
"But Lieutenant Commander, the prisoners are extremely dangerous," a Marine pointed out.
"I am under direct orders from Vice-Admiral Jonathan to interrogate the prisoners."
"Yes, sir! Please be careful, sir!"
With that, they opened the cell door, and Drake made his way inside. "Toothless… known far and wide as a Pirate Hunter until you turn traitor and joined the scum you used to hunt."
"What do we look like chopped liver?" Tuffnut whispered to his sister.
"Let's face it we're not as important," said Ruffnut.
Toothless looked at that Drake. "You didn't come all this way just to tell me that, did you?"
"If that's how you want to play it!" Drake snapped. "How many of you are there and what exactly is your purpose in invading this fortress! It was a clever strategy to invade a base like this from the sky. How did you do it? Did you build a Launchpad?"
"No, we just came down from the sky," said Toothless casually.
"Don't mock me!"
"Calm down, big guy. I'm not mocking you, I'm just answering your question."
Drake then leaned in closer towards him. "I won't hear any more of your lies, pirate."
"With that attitude not going to believe that even if we do tell the truth," Ruffnut pointed out.
"Yeah, maybe should have an open mind when you're interrogating someone," Tuffnut nodded.
"Shut it!" Drake snapped at them.
"Like I said, we came down from the sky," said Toothless. "If you want to get specific, we rode down by a floating octopus. Are you happy now?"
"Well, I guess we have to do this the hard way," said Drake as he rose to his feet. "You're going to be sorry. I'm going to find the truth, no matter what."
Meanwhile, the janitor was escorting Astrid and Fishlegs to who knows where.
"Your next assignment is to clean the old gym," said the janitor as they stopped at a pair of large doors.
"Aye, aye, boss," Astrid and Fishlegs said in unison.
The janitor then opened the door then to their horror they saw that the gym was completely filthy, there wasn't one spot, but there wasn't dust or cobwebs.
"Clean all this?" Astrid stared.
"And we have to do all this by ourselves," Fishlegs moaned.
"I want to see it sparkle," the janitor smirked as he walked out the gym. "Boy, I would hate to be in your shoes right now."
He then left laughing.
"These disguises were clearly a mistake," said Astrid looking at Fishlegs.
Meanwhile, some Marines were patrolling down a corridor keeping an eye out for any other Dragon Riders.
"I heard they captured three of the Dragon Riders," said a Marine as they passed by a few drums.
"What? So that wasn't a ghost ship?"
"Nah, but one of them is scarier than a ghost. You're not going to believe this, but they captured Toothless."
"Whoa…" said the other Marines astonished.
"What?" said a voice inside the drums.
"Apparently there are other crew members hiding too," the Marine continued. "Imagine if we even found one of them we would-be heroes."
"Yeah," the other Marines agreed.
The top of the drum opened, and Chopper poked his head out. "Toothless got captured? What do I do now?"
He then climbed out of the drum and began sneaking down the corridor.
"Those was Marines mentioned three being captured, but they didn't mention anyone else been taken prisoner," he said. "So the rest of the crew has got to be around here somewhere, but where could they be? This place is so huge, I'm ready to get out of here."
You are so busy talking that he wasn't looking behind the corners and he just stepped in front of a group of Marines.
"Hey, what's that?"
Astrid and Fishlegs were completely exhausted, they have been cleaning up the gym for the past few hours.
"If we keep this up there will be dead before they find us," Astrid moaned.
"Hold it!" a Marine yelled.
Astrid and Fishlegs initially thought that the Marines were after them and quickly dived into the nearest room. However, unbeknownst to them, the Marines were actually chasing Chopper.
"Help me!" Chopper cried.
"I said hold it!" said the Marines they ran past Astrid and Fishlegs.
"I guess those guys were looking for us," said Astrid.
"We need new disguises," said Fishlegs.
"Yeah, I don't like the idea of cleaning their base from were not getting paid for it," Astrid agreed and then she noticed several uniforms, including those belonging to nurses and workmen.
Chopper meanwhile was still running frantically through the corridors, but then suddenly he reached a sealed door.
"Oh no, a dead-end!" he panicked.
"He went that way!" said a Marine .
"All right fellers, the reindeer is cornered!"
"What do I do? What do I do?" Chopper asked himself frantically.
The Marines had just reached the corner and quickly jumped out with arrivals at the ready, but there was no sign of Chopper.
"He disappeared!"
"A magical disappearing reindeer?"
One of the Marines then noticed the door ahead was opened a jar. "He didn't disappear."
They then entered the storage room, but all they could see were crates. However, since he was so small, he could be hiding behind any one of them.
"It's going to take us forever to find him in here."
He then noticed an antler popping out of the crate, he then gently tapped one of the Marines and gestured towards the crate. They quietly began to approach it and immediately opened it, but it was just filled with deer antlers.
"What's going on?"
"Did the reindeer leave his antlers behind?"
"Don't be ridiculous, let's just go. We must've lost him in those hallways."
They then began leaving the storage room, and in fact, Chopper had been hiding behind that crater, and now he could finally breathe again.
"Safe at last," he sighed.
He then suddenly heard footsteps, and his heart started pounding once more.
However, it wasn't Marines that entered, but in fact, workmen and they began looking around at the crates.
"So where is the crate?"
"Should be over here."
"Ah, there it is," he said, pointing to the crate with deer antlers.
They then put on a trolley and began moving it. "Say, what are they doing with deer antlers?
"I think they use it in medicines."
Unbeknownst to them, Chopper was hiding the very crate they were pushing.
Meanwhile, the Marines were transporting injured to the medical bay, and almost all of them were in critical condition.
"What happened to them?" a Marine asked as he watched the injured being carried off.
"They said that they ran into a storm, took a lot of casualties."
"Hurry it up!"
"Get them to the infirmary stat!"
At the infirmary, the only doctor was looking through a medical book. She was a young woman called Lily, she wore a pair of spectacles with a meek disposition.
"Let's see, make a vertical incision with a scalpel and if it begins to bleed…" she said, turning the page. She then started to feel rather dizzy on the mention of blood. "Blood… blood… blood…"
She then promptly fainted.
She woke up a few seconds later and then turned the page back without looking at the book.
"It's just my luck that all the other doctors got called away at once," she moaned. "Oh, please don't let that be any surgery patients today."
"Doctor," said a voice.
"Yes?" she said meekly.
The voice came to you one of the two workmen that had brought in the crater antlers.
"We brought the creative deer antlers for the medicine you're going to to make," he said.
She immediately felt relieved. "Of course, right over, there would be fine."
"Yes, ma'am."
Chopper had no idea what was going on outside the crate, he felt it move for a few seconds and then it went still.
"Where am I?" he asked himself as he lifted the crate open.
No sooner had he done so that the first thing he saw was a skeleton, he would have screamed at the didn't cover his mouth with his hooves. He then quickly sunk back into the crate and remained as quiet as a the dormouse.
Astrid and Fishlegs were now in the new disguises, Astrid was disguised as a nurse while Fishlegs was a workman. The two of them were comfortably making their way down the corridor.
"Hopefully we won't be caught doing anything in these disguises," said Fishlegs.
"I wouldn't count on it," said Astrid pointing ahead.
Fishlegs looked ahead of them and saw several nurses running towards them.
"Hey, you get to the infirmary!" said one of the nurses looking at Astrid.
"What?" Astrid blinked.
"There's been an emergency, all nurses are to report immediately," said a nurse grabbing Astrid and pulling her along. She then quickly looked at Fishlegs. "You too, we might need some heavy lifting!"
"Here we go again," Fishlegs moaned and then ran after them.
The nurses soon reached the doctor's office.
"Doctor, we have an emergency!"
"So, what kind of emergency is this?" she asked nervously.
"Critically injured sailors from those Marine warships need immediate attention!"
"Uh, well… I'll leave these patients to you since that is in my area of expertise," he said, smiling awkwardly.
"'This really isn't your expertise?' Well, last time I checked you're the only doctor in this entire base right now!"
Without the two nurses then immediately grabbed her and dragged her away.
"But I'm just a paediatrician!" she wailed. "I know nothing of trauma, it's outside of my speciality!"
The nurses weren't listening and dragged her out of the office.
Chopper then poked his head out of the crate. "I see, it's a medical room. But I wonder if that doctor can handle those patients?"
In the infirmary, everyone was getting the patients on the beds and nurses working tirelessly to bandage their wounds, but many needed surgery. Astrid and Fishlegs just stared at the number of injured men.
"Whoa, these guys are really in rough shape," said Astrid.
"Yeah, they look like they got hit by a cyclone," Fishlegs agreed.
"Don't just stand there, treat the wounded!" said a nurse looking at them.
"Right," said Astrid nervously.
Astrid then began assisting bandaging the wounds, but her main thoughts were on the others. 'We don't have time playing nurse with this bunch. We need to search for the Going Tiger so we can get out of this place.'
She was so busy thinking that she failed to notice that she typed the bandage rather tightly and only realised when the Marine groaned.
"Oh, I'm sorry," said Astrid.
"Don't just stand there!" said a nurse. Astrid immediately thought the nurses were talking to her when she looked around, she saw that they were facing a Lily. "Doctor, what do we do?"
"Okay, let's see," she said, looking at the closest Marine. "Painkiller, he needs 15 mg of painkiller."
"Should we prep the OR?"
"That's right, operate I have to…" she said suddenly feeling rather lightheaded. She then turned her head towards the injured Marine , saw the blood on the bandages and then fainted.
"Doctor!" said nurses yelled and carried her to a nearby stool.
"Doctor put it together!"
"We don't have time for this!"
"Tell us what to do."
Chopper looked to the entire situation, and it certainly looked quite dire. "I've got to help."
Chopper quickly transformed into his human form, grabbed a lab coat, boots and shoes on and wore a thick moustache. He then promptly walked into the room, which turned a few heads.
"I'll be directing treatment today!" he said. "First administer this patient a dose of both phenicol and cardiotonic… then prepare some ticarcillin." The nurses just looked at him, blankly. "Respond if you understand."
Normally, the nurses would question another doctor's sudden appearance, especially given there weren't any others on the base. However, their main concern was that of the patients in this new doctor certainly seem to know what he was doing.
"Yes, doctor!" they said.
They immediately began to tend the patients following Chopper's orders to the letter.
"Now crossmatch every patient's blood type," Chopper ordered. "Begin pre-op treatment for everyone that requires an operation! Get this patient on antibiotics to treat tetanus or any other infections he may have!"
"Right!" the nurse nodded.
"What's the status of the OR?" Chopper asked.
"The operating room is ready, sir."
"Then move patients there, start those on critical condition!"
"Yes, sir!"
Without the nurses began escorting the patients towards the operation room as quickly as they could. Once all the nurses were gone, Chopper made his way over to Lily, who was still out cold.
"Come on, snap out of it," said Chopper.
"Chopper?" Astrid and Fishlegs stared.
"Astrid? Fishlegs?" Chopper blinked. "What in the world are you two doing here?"
"We should be asking you the same question," said Astrid.
It was that point Lily woke up. "Excuse me, but could you tell me what's going on? Where is everybody I seem to have fainted." Her eyes widened the moment she saw Chopper. "Wait, you're a doctor! I don't know who you are or where you came from, but I'm glad you came along. You sure saved us with your expert instructions."
"No one is safe yet, Doctor," said Chopper.
"What?" she said.
"This situation doesn't look good, without emergency surgery, many will die."
"Yeah," she said meekly.
"There is no time to lose, you must operate on the critically injured now!"
"Yes, operate…" She then collapsed, and all of them quickly approached her.
"Hey, what's with you?" Astrid asked.
"I… I can't do it…" said Lily shaking.
"Do what?" Fishlegs frowned.
"I can't stand to see people in pain, bleeding or worse," she said with her hands shaking. "Honestly I can barely even administer a shot. So the thought of putting stitches and cutting someone is just…"
She then started to break down into tears.
Astrid couldn't believe what she was hearing. "This is just perfect. This is a Marine base, you know, how can you call yourself a military doctor if you can't stand to see a little blood?"
"My field of practice is that of children's medicine all the other doctors were called away on business. You see I was only left in charge as a temporary substitute."
"Temporarily?" said Astrid in disbelief.
"Substitute or not, you're in charge of the infirmary right now aren't you?" Chopper asked.
"Uh, yeah," she said meekly. "Seem so."
"It seems so?" said Chopper.
"Hey, Chopper," Astrid whispered in his ear. "Don't you think it's time we get out of here?"
"Yeah, but…"
"We just found out this place isn't unlike it's connected to the open ocean, we just have to find the Going Tiger, and we can escape this stupid fortress."
"But what about the injured Marines?" Fishlegs asked.
"He's right, I can't go yet," said Chopper and immediately looked at Lily. "You're a doctor, and it's your duty to preserve life, isn't it?"
"That is what I've sworn to do," Lily admitted. "But still I have limits, even the best doctors have things they can't do."
"The man who taught me medicine used to tell me a story," said Chopper. "There was once a man who was told by his doctors that he would soon be dead. In despair, he wandered the wilderness in search of a place to die and then when he walked through a mountain path, he saw something extraordinary. The entire mountain was covered in brilliant cherry blossoms. After seeing this, he went to visit his positions again where they were astounded to report that the man was now completely healthy.
"You're the only Doctor here for those patients there, you alone can save them from a terrible death. A healer must never give up, there is no illness that can't be cued. Do never let your fear limit you, there is no patient that we doctors shouldn't try to cure. As doctors, we have the power to make miracles happen, we have to always believe that."
Lily just sat there, and it looked as if Chopper's story and speech had some effect.
"Will I be able to see the cherry blossoms too?" she asked, looking at the floor. She then looked up at Chopper. "No, I will show them the cherry blossoms. All of them suffering people in the operating room."
"That's the spirit, I'll even stick around to help," said Chopper.
"Hey, we don't have time for this," Astrid hissed.
"Yes, that may be true, but my first priority must always be helping those in need," said Chopper looking at her. "I'm a doctor, Astrid!"
It was that point of nurses arrived.
"Doctor, the operating room is prepped and ready to go."
"Good, I'm on my way," said Chopper.
Lily then rose to her feet. "Right, let's go."
With that, Lily left with the nurses and Chopper soon followed suit.
"Chopper!" Astrid cried.
"You can leave me behind if you need to, but I have to stay," said Chopper turning his head to face. "If I did, I would be abandoning everything that Doctor Gothi taught me to uphold."
Astrid sighed. "I'm not going to leave you here all by yourself." She then quickly looked at Fishlegs. "Stay here!"
"Astrid!" Fishlegs cried as she ran off.
Astrid quickly joined up with Chopper and Lily as they began making their way to the operating room. All of them were wearing gowns and gloves on the Marines guarding the door looked at Chopper as he walked by.
"Just who in the heck is that guy?"
Once inside, they began the operation on the Marinesoldiers.
"We'll start with the critical cases," said Lily.
"There's a large iron shard lodged in his upper torso that must be extracted," said Chopper looking at the chart.
"Patient has been anaesthetised, so we're ready to begin the procedure," said Astrid.
"Scalpel," said Lily holding out her hand.
"Yes, Doctor," said Astrid handing her the scalpel.
Lily looked at the wound and was rather nervous, this would be the first time she ever operated on anyone.
"Doctor Lily, you'll be fine," said Chopper encouragingly. "Remember you're the only one who can show these patients the cherry blossoms."
"Yes," Lily nodded.
"This incision runs close to an artery so be careful," Chopper reminded her.
"Right."
She then began the operation.
"Astrid, suction," Chopper ordered.
"Yes, Doctor," said Astrid.
Without they began the operation, Chopper supervised by giving instructions to Lily, who was doing the procedure. Astrid assisted by handing them equipment and brushing off the sweat on Lily's brow. Pretty soon, Lily was able to extract the shard without any problems.
"The shard has been removed," said Chopper.
"Done," said Lily feeling a great weight lifted off her shoulders.
"Doctor Lily we're not even close to being done," Astrid reminded her. "There are so many more patients."
"Of course," Lily nodded.
"We can do it," said Chopper confidently.
"Yeah," Lily nodded.
Drake was still interrogating Toothless and the twins when he got word of the unknown doctor in the operating room.
"What? An unidentified doctor is performing surgery?" said Drake.
"Yes, sir."
"Then that could be our fourth Dragon Rider of the day."
Toothless had a pretty good idea who that doctor was. 'Chopper?'
Drake wasted no time, and he, along with several Marines, made their way to the operating room and stormed in.
"Pardon the intrusion," he said as he entered.
Lily poked her head out of the operating theatre. "We're operating. Please leave."
"This is urgent, I assure you. I need to ask you a few questions."
"Doctor, his blood pressure is dropping fast!" Astrid yelled, looking at the gauges.
"Give him six units of erythrocytes and one unit of platelets!" Chopper ordered.
"Yes, sir!" said the nurses and installed the new drips.
Chopper looked at the gauge and saw that his blood pressure was stabilising. "He's out of danger now, continue with the blood transfusion and ready the dopamine."
Drake then cough to get Lily's attention. "Doctor Lily?"
"We're in the middle of an operation," Lily scolded. "If you're going to stay, please be quiet!"
Drake nearly laughed. "Excuse me, but did I hear you right? Your performing surgery, the doctor that nearly fate every time she sees a paper cut? There are reports of an unidentified doctor here."
"Get out!" Lily demanded, and Drake was quite taken aback by her posture. "The only thing that you and your thoughts will find in here are people giving their all to save precious lives! Is that clear?"
The two of them stared down at one another, but Drake knew he could really do an investigation with an operation being performed.
"Let's go," he said, and then he and his men left the operating room. "Monitor them."
"Sir!"
With that Chopper and Lily continued treating the patients, it was very hard work, but eventually, they completed the operation on every single patient without losing a single life.
"Stitching completed," said Lily taking a deep breath.
"That was the last of our patients," said a nurse wiping the sweat of her brow.
The nurses then carried the patients back into the infirmary, leaving Chopper, Astrid and Lily in the operating room.
"Good job Dr Lily," said Astrid. Chopper then transformed back into his hybrid form much to Astrid's shock. "No, Chopper don't!"
"You really are great Doctor," said Chopper.
"Thank you," she said, smiling down at Chopper. "But you're a much better doctor then I'll ever be Mr Reindeer."
Astrid just stared at Lily blankly. 'It's like she didn't even notice that Chopper change shape.'
Jonathan meanwhile was calmly making his way down to the dining hall where Hiccup and Ragnar were still playing the part of chefs.
"Really what are we still doing hanging around here?" Ragnar asked as he began chopping the onions. "We don't even know if the others had been captured or something."
"Don't blame me, you're the one that showed off every single cook in the base," Hiccup reminded him as he peeled potatoes. "Besides, if anyone had been captured, we would've heard it by now."
"Fair point, but was still waiting on the escape plan it only a matter of time before they discover who you really are," Ragnar pointed out.
"I'm working on it."
"How's it coming?" Jessica asked as she approached them. "Are you done yet? If you don't have, we won't be ready until the next hundred soldiers."
"I've just about finished the onions," said Ragnar.
"Same with the potatoes," said Hiccup.
"Well, I've got another 300 onions and potatoes ready for you when you're finished," she smiled before walking off.
"At this rate, we're going to be stuck here forever," said Hiccup.
Unbeknownst to them, Jonathan was just a few feet away from the dining hall.
