The Dragon Riders have been flying all throughout the day into the night, they were able to stay afloat because Hiccup had attached a flame dial to the mast. This meant a large portion of hot air was now feeling the octopus, a good thing because he was still repairing the broken hull.
"I have to hand it to Hiccup, that was a pretty good idea," said Fishlegs. "Turning the ship into a hot air balloon."
"At least this time we don't have to worry about falling to our deaths," said Ragnar as he looked over the side. "We're just a few hundred feet from sea level."
"Let's just hope that we don't hit the wall until Hiccup fixes the hull," said Astrid.
Hiccup and Chopper were below the ship hammering away, using some spell lumber in order to patch up the hull. They had ropes tied around their waists prevent them from falling to their deaths, and Chopper handed Hiccup the lumbar as he hammered away.
"I've just got about all these holes patched up," said Hiccup wiping the sweat off his brow. "It's a good thing that we had the foresight of taking all this spare lumber from the Marine base."
"I'm glad you're the captain," said Chopper.
"This should hold together for a while, at least until we get a professional look at her," said Hiccup.
It was then that the flame dial burnt out.
"It's out!" said Astrid.
"Fuel burnt out, huh?" said Toothless then leaned over towards the side. "Hey, Hiccup we're going down!"
Hiccup looked down and saw that they were indeed falling gradually towards the sea. "Let's move it, Chopper hurry up and grab those boards!"
"Uh, sure," said Chopper.
Astrid looked at Fishlegs. "Any clue where we're going to land?"
"Hard to tell, but I can say that we've been staying on course," said Fishlegs holding out his log pose.
Hiccup and Chopper had just finished patching the holes and gone onto the deck just as the octopus began to deflate. Once again they crash into the sea, but thankfully not from a great impact like before.
"That was way too close," said Hiccup.
Chopper then began tending to the octopus, who had got a few burns on his tentacles.
"That should help getting rid of the stinging," said Chopper.
"That's two times you've helped us in a tight spot," said Hiccup smiling at the octopus.
The octopus then jumped into the sea and waved at them.
"Thanks again for your help!" Chopper yelled. "I hope you make a lot of new friends in the Blue Sea."
"You watch yourself, you hear," said Toothless.
"Safe travels," said Ragnar.
"You be careful out there," said Fishlegs.
They then watched as the octopus sank into the sea.
Hiccup then looked at his crew. "Okay, let's set the sails and make our way to the next island."
"Hang on, can't we rest for a little while?" Snotlout asked.
"Aren't you a little too relaxed?" Astrid asked, folding her arms. "That kind of attitude isn't going to get us very far in these seas."
"They're right," said Fishlegs as he looked over the side. "These waves here look a little too strange for comfort. So it's back to work, turn to port!"
However, before they could do anything, they heard a strange noise out there in the open sea. Then they saw coming straight towards them was a huge tidal wave.
"I rest my case," said Astrid.
"There's something in the waves!" Ragnar yelled as they quickly set sail. "Is that debris?"
"No, those are sea monkeys!" Fishlegs yelled.
Sure enough within the way, they could see the faces of monkeys sniggering at them, but the rest of their bodies resembled that of fish.
They have to work throughout the night to stay one step ahead of the sea monkeys. There was so focused on the sea monkeys they didn't care which way they were sailing, but finally, they managed to get away from them and found themselves saving on calming seas in the morning.
"Seems pretty calm now," said Ragnar.
"It's too soon to lower our guard," said Toothless.
"I find a little to calm," said Astrid as she looked around. "I mean no sea monkeys just disappeared."
"Is it me or haven't we moved an inch?" said Ruffnut scratching her head.
"Yeah, we don't you be catching any wind in the sails," said Tuffnut.
Hiccup turned towards them, looking horrorstruck. "What did you say?"
"Uh, that there is no wind," said Tuffnut pointing at the sails.
He was right, the sails were not catching any wind, not even a breeze.
"We were so busy getting away from the sea monkeys that we weren't paying attention to our course!" said Hiccup horrified as he looked to the crew. "We've entered the Calm Belt!"
Fishlegs eyes widened in horror. "How could I have made such a mistake!"
"Clam Belt?" Snotlout frowned scratching his head.
"Calm Belt, I mentioned it once before just before we entered into the Grand Line remember?" said Hiccup.
"You said that it was a part of the sea where nothing moves at all," said Astrid.
"That's right, we need to furl the sails and paddle our way out of here," said Hiccup.
"Hang on, why do we even need a paddle?" said Snotlout folding his arms. "All we have to do is wait for the wind to pick up."
"There is no time to argue just follow the orders of your captain!" Hiccup yelled.
"I've never seen Hiccup looked so shaken," said Ragnar.
"But it's so calm here?" said Ruffnut. "What's the rush?"
Hiccup groaned. "Fishlegs, would you please explain to them why we need to get out of here this second?"
Fishlegs nodded. "In our haste to get away from those sea monkeys we went too far south, and now we're off course and stuck out here."
"South, does that mean we've exited the Grand Line?" said Ruffnut.
"Then we have to get back on course," said Tuffnut.
"I'm afraid the situation is far worse than that," said Fishlegs and then pulled out a map to show them. "Now look the Grand Line is sandwiched in the middle between those two green areas you see here, understand? Now, these areas, as they are labelled, are known as the Calm Belt, and that's where we are.
"Nobody knows why, but inside the Calm Belt there's no wind and no current, it's like a void where everything is stagnant. Given that sailboats move by catching winds, this is more than a dangerous region, it could be fatal. Get it?"
"It sounds we're in trouble," said Ruffnut.
"More than you realise," said Hiccup. "However, despite this Calm Belt, I do know several pirates that are able to sail across it no problem, my father being one."
"How exactly?" Heather asked.
"His ship right designed a sort of panel system, which basically about the ship to move without using the wind," Hiccup explained.
"Sadly we don't have anything like that on board," said Ragnar as he looked at the map. "I'm starting to understand why the old man said it was dangerous."
"It explains why we haven't got a single gust of wind," said Toothless.
"So how are we going to get out of this of our ship can't move?" Chopper asked.
"Perhaps the wind will start blowing again," said Tuffnut.
"We already established that winter never blows here!" Fishlegs reminded him.
Astrid looked at Hiccup. "Can't you use your dragon form in order to push us out of the Calm Belt?"
"I could, but it could take a long time, and there's another reason why people call this area treacherous. It infested with—"
Suddenly the ship began to shake.
"What was that?" said Snotlout.
Then a surprising as it may sound they suddenly found themselves being lifted up into the air.
"An earthquake?" Chopper asked.
"It can't be we're in the middle of the sea!" Ragnar yelled.
"Here, they come!" Hiccup yelled.
Everyone looked around and saw rising from the water were monstrous creatures that were like 50 feet tall.
"Sea monsters?" Chopper panicked.
"As I was saying the Calm Belt is the breeding ground for Sea Kings and they are extremely territorial," said Hiccup. "They are the biggest reason why no one crosses the Calm Belt."
"Any idea how we get out of this?" Ragnar asked.
"Just don't move a muscle, but not give them any reason to stick around or eat us," said Toothless calmly. "Once they're gone we'll paddle back."
"You call that plan!" Snotlout yelled.
Astrid then punched him on the top of his head. "Shut up."
Unfortunately was too late, one of the Sea Kings which resembled a frog saw them pounced towards them.
"One of them is attacking us!" Hiccup yelled.
The sea king they were currently resting on shifted slightly, and the twins slipped off the deck.
"Hold on!" Hiccup yelled, transforming to his dragon form and flew down towards them. He then quickly grabbed them with his claws before they were eaten by the giant frog.
"You two all right?" Hiccup asked, looking down at them.
"We're good," said Tuffnut.
"Thanks for the save," said Ruffnut.
"Good, but I get the feeling these guys are not going to sink back into the sea for some time," said Toothless as he looked towards the others. "Also there's no telling when another sea king might attack."
"We don't have a lot of options," said Heather.
"And none of them are particularly good," said Astrid folding her arms.
Astrid then looked down at the sea king's nose hole there were currently resting on an idea popped into her head.
"I've got an idea," she said.
"Is it stupid and reckless?" Hiccup asked.
"Maybe even a little bit crazy," she said.
"I don't like the sound of this," said Fishlegs.
"But with our limited choices that give it a shot," said Ragnar looking at Astrid. "What is it exactly?"
"Hiccup can you fly down to the nose?" Astrid asked.
"Of course, I can."
"Good," she said and then looked at the twins. "Ruff… Tuff… when you get close enough grabbed hold of the nose hair and pull as hard as you can!"
Hiccup stared at her as he realised what she was planning. "That's your plan?"
"It will certainly get the ship back on course," she said.
"Can someone fill me in?" Snotlout are scratching his head. "What is she planning?"
"We're about to find out," said Ragnar.
Hiccup then flew down towards the Sea Kings knows as instructed the twins immediately grabbed hold of a long nose hair.
"Are we sure that Astrid isn't related to us?" Tuffnut asked, looking at his sister. "I mean this is a sort of thing we would come up with."
"Ah, who knows she's an orphan," said Ruffnut.
Hiccup then flapped his wings as hard as possible, and the twins pulled on the nose hair as hard as possible. They pulled so hard that they pulled out the nose and Hiccup wasted no time flying back towards the Going Tiger.
"What in the hell did they just do?" Snotlout asked.
"I think they yanked the nose hair," said Ragnar.
Tears then started performing the sea king's eyes, and it began to breathe in deeply.
"That didn't improve anything!" Chopper yelled.
"Ah, I see the plan now," said Heather.
Fishlegs turned to Astrid. "Wait, you mean your plan was to make it sneeze?"
"Everyone hold onto something we're about to go for a ride!" Hiccup yelled.
"Not again," Toothless groaned.
The sea king then sneezed launching the Going Tiger into the air at an incredible speed. It was so powerful they were actually flying directly over the other Sea Kings.
"There had to be a better way!" everyone yelled.
"For once can't we just peace we sail across the sea?" Snotlout moaned.
"We wouldn't be pirates otherwise!" Toothless yelled.
The ship then landed in the sea, and thankfully they can all feel a breeze.
"Looks like we were landed right back where we started," Hiccup noted.
"And no sign of any sea monkeys," Toothless added.
Heather looked at Astrid, looking slightly impressed. "That was some quick thinking."
"Figured it was the only way to get back on course," Astrid shrugged.
"Speaking of which let set sail before anything else happens," said Hiccup.
"You won't hear me complaining," said Fishlegs.
They then set sail once again, and this time they made certain which way they were headed.
It had been a few hours since they exited the Calm Belt and so far nothing uneventful happened, much to everyone's relief.
"We've had quite a few eventful days," said Ragnar as he looked at the open sea.
"At least it keeps us on our toes," Heather smiled.
Hiccup then looked down at them from the upper deck. "Guys, I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind me upgrading your equipment?"
Astrid looked at Hiccup. "What for?"
"Well, require quite a number of dials from Sky Island and I figured it would be a shame to waste them," Hiccup shrugged. "Besides we're not even halfway through our journey, and you can bet we'll be facing more powerful opponents."
"He's got a point, we barely survived our battle against Enel," said Toothless.
Astrid looked at her axe and remembered how useless she had been on Skypiea. "You really think you can power us up?"
"Look at the work I did with Fishlegs' gloves," said Hiccup.
"He's right, I'd be dead without these," said Fishlegs looking at his climo-gloves. "But do you think you can make some improvements?"
"No sweat," said Hiccup.
"I wouldn't mind if you do some work on my pistols as well," Ragnar added as he pulled them out of his holsters. "I barely have a chance to use them in combat."
"Just leave it to me," said Hiccup and look to the others. "Any more takers?"
"I'm good," said Toothless.
"If Toothless is going having swords done, then neither are we," said Tuffnut.
"Yeah, we can make do," said Ruffnut.
"There are enough, looks like I've got some work to do," said Hiccup. "I'm not so many ideas, I'll get to work on them right away."
"And we won't be seeing Hiccup for the next few weeks," Astrid joked.
Everyone then burst out laughing as they continue to sale on towards the horizon.
