Running, she's running fast through some trees, its dark and she can't tell if she is running away from someone or after someone. Its dark and there's no noise, only her breath as she pants. She stops hands fall to her knees and she ends up on all fours in the mud. The rain is soft but it's the kind that still gets you wet, her hair is stuck to her face and neck, she swipes it away from her eyes and she feels a sticky residue on her hand, looking down she seen blood on her fingers. They shake as she looks around into the darkness. Someone shouts her name it sounds far away, she can't quite pinpoint which direction it's coming from.
"Hayley! Wake up" jumping awake, she sits up looks around and she's in a bright room, the break room to be exact. Vanessa is sat in front of her. "Hey, are you ok? Hank wants to talk to you!"
Standing on shaky legs, Hayley walks into Hank's office and sits in the chair in front of the desk.
"Hayley, we need to get you out of the city, I can't send you to Jay, but I can keep you safe, you know its what Jay would want me to do. I just can't keep you here, you need a real bed and to rest."
"I can't be on my own please? I'll be ok here, I will listen to you and not move of this floor, I'd rather be here then in a dodgy motel on my own. Please Hank?" she feebly begged. Tears streamed down her face as she shook. Hank came round his desk, putting his arms out to Hayley, wrapping her in a hug, he moved them to his couch and held her as she wept, after a while her breath evened out, the sobs subsided.
"Hank, I tried so hard not to fall in love with him, I promise, but I think, oh god no," she sniffed wiping her nose on tissue "I know that it was useless for me to try. The first few months were rough on us both as partners, him with Erin leaving, then the mess with Camilla. Me replacing Erin and then I had the Booth case, after that we talked and something clicked, we had our thing, we'd want to be alone but the other would show up and then we would talk about the case or what our problem was, we'd have a drink and then by the next morning we would be ok, we would be able to come to work and start again. He made me a better cop, a better person, the old me would never have taken Vanessa in. Slowly we would do things together that wasn't work related, football games, vacations and then holidays. It was Vanessa that pointed it out, but apparently everyone other than us saw what was happening. I was going to tell him when he got shot that I was falling in love with him and I couldn't do it I knew something would ruin it, look what happened. I'm pregnant and he's gone." The tears fell again and she sobbed into Hank's shirt, Hank rubbed her back trying to comfort her.
"Hayley listen to me, you and Jay are great partners, you kept him afloat when he needed it, Erin as much as I love her was no good for him, they would pull each other down and still be blaming each other when they hit rock bottom. Jay needed a strong partner like you to keep him up and once I saw you working together, I knew that you were the one to do it, you been close was aa added bonus. I saw a long time ago that you two were falling for each other, but you work so well together I didn't say anything. I would have put money on you getting together a lot sooner, so I'm shocked you are saying it was a month ago. Jay will be back Hayley, and you are going to talk things through. You will be on desk duty up here until you need to go on maternity, then we will have a beautiful intelligence baby. This will all work out. You have to pull yourself together and help us do that, show me that this isn't going mess things up." Hayley sat up and looked Hank in the eye's and nodded.
"OK!" she sniffed and sat up straight. "I'm going to wash my face and then make a coffee. Thank you, Hank, for everything"
The ballpen was empty they had all either gone home or to source breakfast for everyone. Hayley decided to shower and change into an outfit she had in her locker. She wanted to keep the pregnancy a secret until she got chance to speak to Jay or not depending on how these next few days went.
The team were after Andrew Green, he was the husband that was after Will and Jay. They had looked up his parents they were both deceased and he was an only child. He had a cousin though who the team liked for hiding him. They all suited up and left the precinct leaving Hayley to do some research of her own. She had tracked down a cabin that Andrew's parents owned and a woman he was seeing behind his wife's back. All she needed to do was wait for the team to come back and pass the information over. The next 9 months would be the longest of her life she's a get up and go girl, relaxing isn't something that comes easy to her. Whilst she was waiting for the team to return, a call came in from the sheriffs office about Andrews wife laura. She had been missing from the shelter since last night, her and her daughter Abby had gone to the store for supplies something else to keep them busy. The team had drawn a blank and had all come back and listened to what she had found out about Andrew and what had happened to . Splitting into two groups, one to the cabin and one to the woman was the best option. She found herself alone again, her mind wondered to the future and what hers was going to be like from now on. She smiled at the images of Jay and a boy who was his double running in the park, a little girl who was blonde but had his signature green eye's and freckles across their nose. The phone rang on Jay's desk and she sat up and answered it without thinking.
"Hello!" came a tiny voice "is that the police? My mommy told me to call you and ask for Jay! Is he there, she really needs him to help her?"
"Who is this?"
"It's Abby, mommy and daddy are fighting again I'm hiding."
"OK Abby where are you?" she started tracking the number on the computer.
"At my Grammy's house. She's gone now but my daddy kept it for vacations, its by the lake we have a boat!" Abby had become excited about where she was, forgetting the reason she was on the phone.
"OK Abby, I need you to stay hidden, someone will be with you soon, OK? I need to put the phone down and call someone OK?"
"OK will they hurry, it gone quiet now!" a chill ran down Hayley spine.
"Stay quiet I'll stay on the phone; OK I'm going to talk to my boss, OK?"
"OK Abby replied tearfully" a tearful reply all excitement gone from her mind.
"Hank, you need to get to Andrews mom's cabin, they are there I have Abby the daughter on the other line she's really scared sarge." She told him.
"Ok we are five minuets out, tell her to stay hidden." Hank replied.
"CHICAGO PD don't move Andrew!" Hayley heard Kevin shout as a door banged open. The room was a flurry of activity.
"Abby, can you call out?" Hayley heard Vanessa shout.
"I'm here" a little voice shouted. "The police are here now I'm going bye-bye." Abby said and she pressed the button on the screen.
Hayley breathed out a sigh of relief, it was over, right? The team booked Andrew and he was taken to the cells downstairs. The team all came upstairs all looked worn out and ready for bed. It had been a long day. Hank sat on Jay's desk and explained to everyone what happened.
"Andrew will be going away for murder, kidnapping, child endangerment and anything else I can pin on him. The wife was DOA when she arrived at Med. He's a psychopath and will meet his match in prison. Go home everyone fresh start on Monday" standing up he walked into his office and shut his door. Everyone felt relieved.
"Come on Hayley lets go home, I need my bed. Night guys," Vanessa said. they hugged their co-workers and went to the car. "Do we order in tonight, or do you want me to cook?"
"I'm ok actually V, the others are meeting at Molly's you should go join them I'm going to take a bath and crash." She smiled at Vanessa and looked out of the window.
"Hayley are you sure? I don't mind staying in with you. I promise."
"Honest V please I could do with some time to think." Hayley reassured her friend.
"Ok promise me you will eat though. You need to keep that baby growing." They smiled at each other and headed into the house.
Vanessa left Hayley to get changed, she was still unsure about going out, Hayley was stood with her head in the fridge, she found a yoghurt and some milk. She was chugging the milk when the doorbell rang. She walked to the door as Vanessa shouted something too her that she didn't catch. Swinging the door open she came face to face with Jay, they both stood there for a minuet and then like magnets they crashed into each other. Wrapped in the embrace Jay walked them to the kitchen, perched on a stool and kissed Hayley's head, her shoulder shook as she sobbed with relief that he was safe. Vanessa rounded the corner and stopped as she saw the couple, she silently put her shoes on and slipped out of the door.
"Hayley, you can let go, I'm not going to leave again, I promise." Jay said too her, she looked up at him and he didn't think she could look more beautiful. Her ocean blue eyes were full of tears, her face was free of make-up, her hair was in a messy bun and her cheeks were flushed.
"I'm so mad at you but I'm so relieved that you are ok! I missed you so much Jay, please don't ever leave me like that again!" tears escaped her eyes and she wrapped herself around him again. Jay wasn't sure how long he was sat in her kitchen holding her, but he was home, his heart was beating slower, at a relaxed pace. He was so tiered he felt like he had hit a wall.
"Hayley, I know we need to catch up but I'm so, so tired, can we go to bed? Just to sleep I promise!" she pulled away from him again and looked him in the eyes.
"I need to eat Jay and we need to talk. I have to tell you something." The doorbell chimed "If it's not the door it's the phone!" she joked as Jay got up and answered the door. The pizza guy stood on the other side BBQ chicken with mushrooms and sweetcorn, her favourite pizza from Bertolli's. Vanessa must of ordered before she left.
They headed for the couch and started eating. They sat in silence while they ate, both feeling nervous about the talk they needed to have. Hayley let her food settle although she could feel the food churning already. Jay started the conversation, he twisted so he could see her.
"Hayley I'm sorry I had to go without saying goodbye if I'd known you would be in danger, I would have scooped you up and took you with me, in a heartbeat. I love you Hayley I have for a long time, I'm just sorry it took me nearly losing you to make me realise it."
"It's been a long time, Jay, since I saw you as just my partner, you have been gone for nearly five weeks and I wasn't sure I was going to get through this without you. I think Hank and Vanessa were ready to have me certified. Jay, I" she looked down at her hands, twisting them and trying to steady her breathing "I found that I'm pregnant. I missed my pill for two days when I stayed at your place, I'm sorry! I didn't do it on purpose and its ok if this is too much for you. But just know that I love you and any decision you make is ok. I wont hold it against you"
Before Hayley could say anything else Jay had wrapped his arms around her and pulled her on to his knee, tears streamed down his face, when she was sat he took her head in both hands gently moving her head back so he could look into her eyes. I'm not going anywhere, you and me, this baby, I'm going to be a dad" he chuckled. "Hayley, I love you so much"
"your not mad at me?"
"what? no! Why would I be mad at you? It was my responsibility too and I was so caught up in you and me actually, finally kissing and then being together, that all thoughts of protection were gone, our love for each other made a baby. Are you happy about it" he became worried as anxiety was rolling of Hayley. "I'm sorry, I never thought to ask you how you feel, are you OK?"
"I know that I'm keeping him, or her." She smiled a sad smile " I've know for forty-eight hours and 46 of them were spent worrying about you, how you would react if you were coming home. I've never thought about having kids and then one day about eighteen months ago, I was watching you and Adam with Mikayla, I saw you and thought I want that with you. A family, a future, then I shook my head and went back to being just us, it scared me and I'm scared but I'm excited about it. But no pressure Jay! OK!"
"No pressure needed, I'm in all the way in. Come on you need to sleep I didn't sleep very well without you either." They kissed and Jay led her to bed, locking up on the way.
