Title: BarFly: Aftermath

Rating: M, but not for a while

Summary: Follow-up to BarFly. This story dovetails with the series and hopefully, answers some questions we've all had about the relationship between our two ladies as portrayed in the series.

A/N: Seriously, if you are going to leave a review calling the ending sh*t, sign your name. Trolls are not taken seriously. This is going to be a long ride with ups, downs and wipe outs, but worth it. I promise.

2 Days Post BarFly

Jane made her way down to Maura's office, unsure of how she would be received. She hadn't spoken to or seen the blonde since they broke-up. Or rather, she broke-up with Maura. She hadn't slept since that day, and was pretty sure Maura hadn't either. As she approached the doctor's office, she slowed, trying to figure out exactly what to say. As she was standing outside the door, her decision was taken from her.

Maura Isles was engrossed in the file in her hands, and didn't see the detective standing just outside her door. They collided, sending the file Maura was reading skittering across the floor and Jane Rizzoli to the floor.

"Jane! Are you ok?"

The detective was rubbing her elbow as she looked up at the doctor. "Sorry Maura. Are you ok?"

Maura extended her hand to Jane, who took it and allowed the blonde to help her up. "I'm fine. I should have been watching what I was doing." Once the detective was upright, Maura examined her elbow. "We need to put ice on this, otherwise it's going to stiffen." She took a good look at the detective, and noted the dark circles under her eyes. "You're not sleeping."

Jane shrugged and began picking up the papers Maura had dropped. "I need to ask a favor of you?" Jane wasn't sure what she had been expecting from Maura, but she was still surprised when the shorter woman nodded. "Uh...ok."

Maura stepped aside and motioned for Jane to come into her office. She took a seat on the chair and motioned for Jane to sit on the couch. "What do you need?"

"Uh...well, tomorrow is Hoyt's sentencing." Maura nodded. "And the DA wants me to give a...victim's impact statement." She finished and sat silently.

"Jane? What-"

"I don't want you to come to court tomorrow."

"Ok." She tilted her head. "Why?"

Jane took a deep breath. "I don't want you to hear what he did to me...what he said to me." She ducked her head. In a smaller voice she finished, "How he touched me."

Maura sank to her knees before Jane and made eye contact with her. "Oh Jane...of course. I don't want to cause you more pain or distress." She tilted Jane's face up and her heart broke at the tears in Jane's eyes. "Oh Jane..."

Her words were cut off by Jane's lips. She allowed the detective to kiss her and hold her after the kiss. "I love you so much Maura."

"I know." She held Jane to her and stroked her head as she felt Jane's tears soaking her shirt. "Shh. It's ok. I've got you, baby. I've got you." She pulled back and kissed Jane on the forehead. "I love you too, Jane."

Jane took the tissue Maura offered her and wiped her eyes, before smiling at Maura. "Thank you."

Maura watched her go, finally flopping down on the floor, wanting nothing more than to follow Jane home and hold her all night. Instead, she lay flat of her back staring at her office ceiling.

2 Weeks Post Bar Fly

Maura Isles was sitting at her desk, writing in her journal and trying not to think about Jane Rizzoli. She hadn't seen Jane outside of work since the day before Jane had to give her victim impact statement.. Angela, Korsak and Frankie had all noticed the somewhat formal interactions between the two women. Angela had noted Jane was around the house more than she had been in years. Maura was trying not to think about the situation with Jane, when there was a knock at her door.

Not really paying attention, Maura opened the door. "Jane."

An antsy looking Jane couldn't bear to look at Maura. "Can I come in?" Maura stepped aside and motioned her in. "I need to talk to you." She finally looked at Maura and noticed the still dark circles under her eyes, the dull texture of her hair and that she appeared to have lost some weight.

Maura had heard through the grapevine that what should have been a short day in court, had turned into an all day event with Hoyt. She had wanted to go to Jane that day, hold her all night, but she finally reasoned that if Jane had wanted her, she would have contacted her. So here she was with Jane standing in her entryway. The detective's hair was wilder than normal and she had bags under her eyes. She also noticed that Jane was furiously rubbing her scars, to the point they looked raw. She walked over to the table and motioned for Jane to sit. She hadn't been able to sit on the couch or even in the living room since the break-up.

"Let me see your hands, Jane." Jane hesitated, mainly because she didn't want Maura to see her scars and because she hadn't had any physical contact with the blonde in two weeks. "Jane, I can see they are raw to the point of bleeding." Reluctantly, Jane held her hands out. Maura went to get her medical bag. She took Jane's hands and cleaned them with an alcohol wipe, drawing a childlike squeal from Jane. She applied liquid bandage to each hand, knowing Jane wouldn't do well with bandages.

Jane waved her hands in the air, trying to get the solution to dry. "This stings!"

"Give me your hand." Jane did as asked and squirmed for a different reason as Maura began to blow on her palms. "You look like shit, Jane."

"So do you."

"So, what did you need to talk to me about?"

Jane took a deep breath, exhaled, and finally met Maura's eyes. "I'm leaving."
