I was lying on a hospital bed. My body felt like I had a sunburn all over my skin, but, apart from that, I was rather well.
But why did I survive? I couldn't understand why I hadn't burnt to death. Who could have saved me?
I sat up, adjusting my eyesight. I noticed someone's shadow on the other side of a folding screen illuminated by sunlight. I tried to focus my sight on the silhouette. It was about five feet tall, and it had a bulky form.
"Who are you?" I questioned.
The shape didn't reply.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
The figure didn't move.
"Are you a nurse?" I asked.
The figure remained silent.
"Is somebody with you?" I asked.
Still, no answer.
I got frustrated and annoyed. What was wrong with this guy? Was he deaf? Or maybe mute?
But then, a door opened and a nurse came in.
"How are you feeling?" she asked.
"Fine," I responded.
"How did you survive?" she asked.
"Huh?" I asked.
"The building was destroyed," she explained. "How did you survive? From the reports, you were alone in the building. However, you were found lying on the street, near the burning remains of the school. How did you do it?"
"I don't know" I answered.
"You don't know?" she asked.
"I don't remember anything, I swear," I replied.
"Hmm..." the nurse said. "Maybe you were drugged."
I shook my head. "I never even drank alcohol in my life."
She shrugged. "Well, I can tell you that you're lucky to be alive. You would've been dead if it weren't for the fact that you exited that place. Your vitals are stable and you seem fine."
"Thank you," I said.
"You're welcome," she said. "You can leave now. I'll call you if you need anything else."
I nodded and left.
Outside, I kept thinking about how I could have survived? And then, I started to think.
"I was outside," I said aloud.
Then, I went to visit again the place where it all happened. I walked the streets, remembering every detail of that horrible experience, until I got there. The building wasn't there. It was gone. An empty, scorched lot was in its place.
I walked around the area, looking for some clues. I searched everywhere, hoping to find something of interest. But there was nothing. No clue as to what happened. No clue as to who saved me. Nothing.
I sighed as I stared at the spot where the building used to be, before it burned down. As I wasn't able to discern anything, I started to walk back home.
But... As I arrived home... I was shocked to see the entrance door was slightly open!
My heart skipped a beat. Was it possible that I've been robbed? I stepped inside, slowly, cautiously, and quietly. Nobody was there.
Maybe I forgot to lock the door? Maybe I neglected to close it properly? Luckily, all my things were still inside.
I moved silently through the house. There were no signs of any intruders. I went into the living room. Everything there was intact, undisturbed.
Then, I went downstairs and into the kitchen. Everything was okay there too. However, I still didn't feel safe.
I proceeded to the bathroom. Nothing seemed out of order. There was only one room left to check. My room.
As I was going to take a step forward to enter, suddenly, I paused. A sound caught my attention. Footsteps. Intruders?!
I listened carefully. They were coming upstairs. And they were approaching my room.
I was scared. I backed away, ready to flee. But what was I supposed to do? Escape through the window?
I didn't know what to do. I was paralyzed. I looked around the room. There was nothing I could use as a weapon. There was nothing I could do. I was terrified.
I just stood there, frozen. Seconds later, I heard footsteps stop. And...
Someone poked me from behind.
"Aaaaahhhh!" I shouted.
"Eekkk!" the intruder yelled from the sudden reaction.
I spun around quickly, wondering who this intruder was. It was a Typhlosion! Its body instantly became completely enveloped in flames for a fraction of second, probably from the unexpected scare.
However, it was so intense that the air in my room warmed up in an instant.
"Whoa!" I shouted.
It stopped immediately. The heat died down, and it smiled.
"Hi!" it said.
"What are you doing?" I demanded.
"Me?" it asked.
"No, I'm talking to an alien on Saturn! Of course I'm asking you! You've broken into my house!"
"Hey, calm down. I'm just trying to help," it said.
"Help? Help? Did you hear yourself? You broke into my house, and now you want to help me? This is not funny!"
"Calm down," it repeated. "What a way to thank me for saving your life!"
"Saving my life?!" I screamed. "You are the one who saved me before?!"
"Yeah, I did," it admitted.
"How?! I don't even remember anything! How is it possible that you saved me?!"
"You were unconscious! I found you lying on the ground and carried you out of there, while the fire brigade was arriving."
"Wait a minute. You saved me from that burning school, right?" I questioned.
"Yeah, I did," it confirmed.
"So... You were stalking me!" I accused.
"Stalking you? Me? Are you kidding?" it asked a bit startled.
"Oh yeah, you have just confessed it! There's no way you knew I was there!" I confirmed. "You were spying on me. You were watching me, following me around!"
"Spying? Following? Watching? Hey, you're getting paranoid, man! I was just walking around. I saw you there, so, since I met you the other day in the tournament, I decided to check you out. That's it!"
"Okay, whatever," I said. Fuck. It was the SAME Typhlosion from the tournament?
"So, You're the same Typhlosion I met the other day, aren't you?" I asked.
"Yeah," it confirmed.
"And you say you were just checking me out?" I asked.
"That's right," it said.
"Do you have a crush on me or something?" I asked doubtfully.
"What?" he asked.
"Nothing!" I said. "Forget it."
He laughed.
"Don't laugh at me!" I snapped.
"Sorry!" it apologized.
I shook my head, ignoring his apology. "Anyway, why did you save me?" I continued. "You said the fire brigade was coming, right?"
"Yes, they were coming," it answered.
"Why didn't you wait for them?" I asked.
"Because they wouldn't have been able to save you," it explained.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I was afraid you wouldn't make it! In fact, when the fire brigade got there, the building had already collapsed! You would have died!" it explained.
"Really?" I said, surprised.
"Yeah," it said.
I was speechless.
"Wow," I said. "That's impressive."
"Thanks," it said.
"So, why did you save me?" I asked.
"Because you look like a cool guy. Who doesn't like cool guys?" it answered.
"Why?!" I asked in shock. Definitely this Typhlosion was blind or crazy or something like that.
"Your eyes," it said. "When I first saw you, I thought: 'Ugh, another stupid loser with glasses. Again!' but as I talked to you, I was surprised with your confidence."
"Uh... Thanks?" I said.
"It's alright, man," it said. "Let's talk about something else. What was your name? I don't remember at all."
"Oliver," I answered.
"Nice to meet you, Oliver," it said.
"Same here," I answered.
We both stood there, staring at each other.
"Well, It's a bit strange to be alone with another guy in a bedroom. I better get going to search for hotties around the city! Bye, Oliver!" He said.
"Bye!" I replied.
"See ya!" he said.
And then, he was gone.
"Damn," I said to myself. I walked to the door. I opened it slowly, carefully, and peeked outside. There was no sign of him anymore. What a relief.
I closed the door, and locked it. Then, I started to relax. Did I say relax? No way. Relaxing was impossible. I couldn't.
I felt so stupid. I couldn't believe that I trusted someone like that. Those guys who act weird because they think they are tough. I never ever believed those people would help me in any case. Definitely, I shrugged it off, and went to sleep.
