Chapter 2: The Water's Edge… for Dagobah Beach
In Nedzu's eyes, the last couple of weeks have been interesting, to say the least.
Triplets had suddenly appeared in the Quirk Registry. The Nezumi family. A trio of humans that all look like hedgehogs, each with a variation of the same power. But the question was, how did they appear? To his knowledge, there are no other families with that surname. They could be from another country, sure, but Nedzu had double and triple checked with the States, Taiwan, China, Korea, even Mexico and Russia. None of them have the Nezumi family in their registries.
Second, and most recently, that fight on the train tracks. The villain's quirk did not contain short range teleportation. His Quirk only increased his size. So why was he suddenly able to teleport? But was that all there was to it? The villain had defeated Kamui Woods in one blow. He sidestepped the newcomer, Mt. Lady, with ease. And yet he was defeated by a child. Jiyukaze's Quirk is strong, yes, but he defeated the villain with ease, sustaining no damage, only fainting in the end because any energy he had was wasted in that last attack.
The blue streaks he left behind were very familiar as well. Pulling up a security image from three month ago, Nedzu examined the blue streak on that image, and compared it to the one that Jiyukaze left behind during his fight with the villain. Similar shade of blue, same length and width, even a hint of red and gold near the bottom. Three months ago, this photo was taken and the Nezumi's suddenly appeared, and one had a Quirk near identical to the image. This is not a coincidence.
And lastly, the blue gem that suddenly crashed into his office, also three months ago. He had asked the Power Loader to try to analyze the gem's composition, but each time he tried, the machine overheated, and eventually exploded. When Nedzu touched the gem directly, he felt a rush of power unlike that of normal Quirks. There were multiple, evident by the villain. Multiple gemstones that granted the user an increase in power, along with a free teleportation Quirk.
If any villains were to find out about these gems, then the safety of the world would be at stake. So, first order of business. He e-mailed Yagi Toshinori.
"I wonder, are they friends? Or foes?"
Today was Sunday, meaning there was no school. So, Sonic laid in his bed, taking his cat nap for the day. Until Shadow barges in and pours a bucket of ice cold water on him.
"DUDE! What the heck was that for?" The resident edgehog was wearing black vest over a white dress shirt, complete with a red tie and slacks. As usual, he also had his inhibitor rings, hover shoes, and red stripes across his quills (no matter how much he says no, Sonic's pretty sure he dyes them). Shadow through the bucket at Sonic as well, but the blue hedgehog caught it with one hand.
"You're due at Dagobah Beach in an hour," Shadow said coldly. "I'll be heading to work soon. Dinner's in the kitchen." He paused. "Remember, don't draw attention to yourself. Just do what you're told." With that, he pulled out an Emerald, and warped away.
Groaning, Sonic put on a pair of shorts and a blue hooded tank top, and walked out to the kitchen. Silver was wrapped in a blanket, and was having trouble swallowing down some katsudon, and staring at a laptop. Despite working at a restaurant, Shadow was a terrible cook.
"So Silv, has anything come up yet?" The restaurant Shadow worked at had pro heroes visit often, so he bugged the place to hell and back, hoping that the heroes might mutter anything about the Emeralds. "No, nothing yet." Silver took another bite of katsudon, and struggled to repress a gag.
Sonic sighed, and threw a bag of popcorn in the microwave. "So, you gonna be OK at the beach? Water isn't exactly your strong suit." Sonic shrugged. "They're probably just gonna ask me to clean up the place. And besides, I like the beach. Just not the water." Sonic took the bag from the microwave, drizzled some chili over it, and promptly ate his dinner. "Also, if I do have to get in the water, I'll just use Chaos Control to speed up time."
Silver looked at Sonic bewildered. "Can the Emeralds even do that?" Again, Sonic shrugged. "Who knows? If they can manipulate space-time, they can probably speed time up!"
Silver sighed. "Of course they can. Hey, isn't that Ryukyu?" Sonic looked over the white hedgehog's shoulder. Sure enough the Dragon Hero appeared, being led to her table by Shadow. Silver switched cameras to follow them, which led them to a table with Tsukauchi Naomasa, somebody who might as well live there. Seriously, he's there almost every single day.
"Turn on the sound." Silver tapped a button on the laptop, and listened in on their conversation.
"Well detective? What did you call me here for?" Ryukyu asked. Tsukauchi looked around, as if cautious about anybody listening in. He grabbed a folder from inside his trench coat, and handed it to Ryukyu.
"I'm sure you've heard the news about the mole villain, right?" Ryukyu nodded, unsure of where he was going. "Great. I can't talk about much here, but there are some things that don't add up. The case also has connections to the Nezumi triplets." He paused to let the heroine absorb the information. "This case is top secret; we're only letting a select few know about this. If anything gets out, it's possible that all hell will break loose."
Silver took a moment to stare at Sonic. The latter grabbed a handful of popcorn, and threw them into his mouth. "Oops?" Silver face palmed. "Anyways, it means Tsukauchi's boss has or at least knows about the Emeralds," Sonic said. "You got that, Shadow?" His only response was a quiet grunt.
Sonic finished his popcorn and threw the bag in the trash. "Well, now that that's settled. I'll be heading off to the beach. Seeya!" He ran out the door and jogged at a brisk 54 kph [34 mph]. If he takes the very long way over, he should reach Dagobah Beach in about… 5 minutes, give or take. If he makes it there before the cops do, he might be able to take another cat nap before they wake him up. With this in mind, Sonic sped up, taking his second tour across Japan. If he has time, he might tour China as well.
Dagobah was a literal dump. It smelled like one too. There was a load of scrap metal, worn out furniture, dysfunctional electronics, and… a mint condition 2022 Toyota Camry. OK.
The state of the beach infuriated Sonic to no end. This world has a society of superpowered humans, where people can become heroes as an official job with a paycheck. And yet, nobody bothers to clean up a beach. Being a hero was about being a good person, which meant taking care of the environment!
If Sonic had sleeves on, he would push them up his arms. Since he can't, he just did a few stretches and started pushing trash away from the beach, making sure to keep garbage from entering the water and floating away. He was glad that he was wearing gloves because this was disgusting. On second thought, he should've just brought extra gloves.
He was working for half an hour when a truck pulled up, and a blonde, much less buff knock off of Skeletor walked out. He studied Sonic for a brief moment before shouting, "Hello there, young man!" He walked down the steps before continuing. "You must be… Nezumi Jiyukaze, correct?"
"Yep, that's me," Sonic said, chucking two plastic bags filled with garbage into a pile. "Why's this place such a dump? You'd think heroes would've cleaned this place up by now," He said while diving into a pile of scrap metal.
"I have the same thoughts myself. In the days before quirks, being a hero was about community service, starting donations, helping the environment. But once Quirks started to appear, the concept of heroes began to shift greatly." Skeleton man sighed. "Now, there is not enough time to do those kinds of things, with all the villains running about. And since society depends on heroes to keep the peace, they assume that all problems will go away eventually."
"Wow. That's… very depressing."
"Yes, I suppose it is." He eyes the pile of scrap Sonic was swimming in. "I know it may seem strange to ask you this after you've started working, but can you pause for a moment." Sonic's head popped out of the pile, raising an eyebrow. "Why?"
"Why, this garbage is part of my new training regimen for my protege!"
"Training regimen?" Skeletor nodded. "You some of this scrap is a bit on the heavy side, so he'll be moving to build up a bit of muscle, otherwise, his bones might be turned to jelly."
"Oh, that makes sense. But, If I'm not here to clean, why am I here?"
The skeleton chuckled. "You'll be sparring with him, that's all. Ah, there's my protege right now."
Sonic was expecting somebody who was a lot more impressive. Instead, he laid eyes on a fairly skinny kid with green hair and freckles. He might be able to grow a six-pack, give or take a few months. "This guy? Seriously?" Was the only thing he could say.
"Do you look like you could take on a superpowered mole 4 times your size?"
"Fair enough."
The kid ran down the steps, almost tripping multiple times. He did trip eventually, his face leaving an imprint in the sand. "I know he doesn't look like much, but I assure you, he has the heart of a hero." In all honesty, the kid reminds Sonic of Tails. It took all his strength to not feel homesick at that very moment.
"Good afternoon, Al- HOLY CRAP! You're the guy who fought the mole villain last week!" Out of nowhere, the kid brought out a pencil and notebook, and started bombarding the hedgehog about his Quirk. He suddenly stopped when he realized he was making the hedgehog uncomfortable. "S-sorry about that. Analyzing Quirks is a h-hobby of mine." He sheepishly stuck his hand and introduced himself as Izuku Midoriya.
"Nice to meet you, Midoriya. Name's Sssss- Nezumi! Nezumi Jiyukaze!" Nice save. "This guy says I'll be helping you train for the next few days." Sonic said, pointing his thumb to the skeleton man. Midoriya did a double take at the information, and looked at his mentor. "It'll be a great opportunity to get some combat training in," he reasoned. Midoriya nodded. "Thanks, Al- Yagi. You too, Nezumi."
For the next hour or so, Sonic watched as Broccoli Boy tried, and struggled, to carry piles of trash and scrap to Yagi's truck. According to Yagi, Midoriya's Quirk, Superpower, was extremely unstable, and he needed to build up some muscle before he could use it safely. The kid worked hard to become a hero, even when others told him that he couldn't. Sonic respected him already, and they haven't even thrown hands yet.
Eventually, Midoriya cleared up a sizable chunk of the beach, slowly returning it to its former glory. Yagi allowed Midoriya a water break, and motioned for Sonic to join them.
"Now then, I'm sure you're curious as to why I asked Young Nezumi to join us this week." Midoriya nodded. "Well, the simplest answer is combat training! I'm going to have you spar against him." Midoriya nodded, and then after fully absorbing the information started panicking, while Sonic started grinning widely.
"Wait… Fight him!? I won't be able to land a hit on you?! You probably won't even let me come near you since you have a speed-based Quirk. He might even use his speed to move so fast that I won't be able to see…" From there, Midoriya started muttering, effectively coming up with strategies for Sonic. After a while, Midoriya stopped, almost looking ashamed of himself. "S-sorry about that."
Sonic raised an eyelid. "What're you apologizing for? The fact that you have a brain on your shoulders? If you have to speak in order to organize your thoughts, then go for it dude." I've seen weirder stuff before, believe me. Midoriya almost looked taken aback by his words. "Thank you, Nezumi-san."
"Don't mention it. Now then…" Sonic did a few quick stretches and went into a fighting stance, placing his fists in front of his chest, constantly shifting his weight between his two deadliest weapons. "Whenever you're ready, kid."
He let Midoriya take the initiative. The broccoli boy started with a painful telegraphed punch, which Sonic dodged by taking one step backwards. Midoriya tried to go for an uppercut, but he lost his footing in the loose sand, and missed. He tried to launch one more attack on Sonic, a kick of some kind, but the hedgehog's phone rang. Not one to let people wait, he accepted the call.
"Who is it?" He asked in a singsong voice. When Midoriya paused his attack, Sonic slammed his foot into the floor to kick up sand, blinding Midoriya, who instinctively pulled up his hands. Sonic then kicked Midoriya in the stomach causing the boy to land on his butt. Hopefully the mischievous glint in Sonic's eyes told him to continue the fight.
"Oh, hey Itsuka." Midoriya tried to land a few blows, but Sonic dodged easily. "Yeah, I'm pretty good at DDR." Midoriya kicked up sand, trying to blind Sonic, but he was behind him before the sand reached his eyes. "Yeah, I AAAed every song on Extreme. I even did PSMO on my first try! Hey, why are you on speaker?" Sonic looked around and realized he lost track of his opponent. "Whaddya you mean you can beat me at DDR?" At that moment, a pile of scrap metal started falling, and Sonic managed to catch a glimpse of Midoriya pushing it down.
"Nevermind the sound, nobody can beat in DDR, not in a million years!" Sonic kicked a stray piece of metal at an angle that caused a chain reaction, knocking the other pieces away from him and the ocean. "Really? Well, I accept your challenge!" The sand shifted behind him, and Sonic fired off a round-house kick behind him, but the only thing there was a car battery. "Yeah, I'll be there in a flash, it should only take a minute."
Sonic grunted as he felt Midoriya's fist collide with his jaw. It was a very weak hit, one that only caused mild discomfort. Even if Sonic didn't show it, he was impressed. "You won't mind if I bring a friend over? Great, talk to ya soon!" Sonic hung up, returning the phone to his pocket. "Well, this was fun kid, but we've got an arcade to head to!"
Midoriya gave Sonic a questioning stare, which turned to shock once Sonic moved behind him. "Don't take this loss too hard, OK?" Before he could respond, Sonic jumped and kicked the air in front of him with enough speed to form a blade of wind that slammed into Midoriya, knocking him into the ocean.
Sonic turned to Yagi and bowed. "So, how'd I do?" The mentor smiled and began clapping. "A brilliant performance, I must say." He turned to Midoriya, who just got out of the water, and was soaking wet. He looked ashamed for some reason.
"I'm sorry I couldn't win, Mr. Yagi."
Yagi only sighed. "Midoriya, I'm going to be honest with you. I did not expect you to win this fight, at all. I'm surprised you even managed to land a hit on Young Nezumi." Midoriya looked confused. "I-if you knew I was going to lose, when why bring him here?"
"Kid, how'd it feel when I knocked you into the ocean?" Sonic asked, beginning to understand himself what Yagi was going for. Midoriya thought for a minute. "Frustrated," he said. Both Sonic and Yagi made a motion for Midoriya to elaborate. "Well, when Yagi told me I was sparring against you, I thought, at first, to see if it was a test to see if I am wo- To see if I can bring out Superpower. But halfway through the match, I realized that I wouldn't be able to beat you in a one to one match. That's when I tried to trick you instead, distracting you to hopefully land a hit. When I did manage to hit you, I was… Proud? Of… myself? I managed to hit somebody who could move so much faster than me, I was ecstatic. But then, when I was hit by…" Midoriya paused, and looked at Sonic. "I call it Sonic Wind."
"When I was hit by Sonic Wind, I guess I realized the difference between our skills. And that's when I felt frustrated. I've been trying so hard to live up to All Might, and that blow felt like it invalidated how much I've trained for the last six months." Midoriya sighed, signifying that he had finished.
Yagu patted him on the back. "Young Midoriya, one loss does not invalidate your training. It means that you have room to grow, to improve. It's natural to feel down after a loss, which is why you have to use that to motivate you to become stronger, and go beyond your limits, to go Plus Ultra."
Midoriya nodded, and turned to Sonic. "Thank you for sparring with me," He said, bowing. Sonic shook his head. "Don't thank me yet. We've still got all week. So, Midoriya, wanna head to the arcade with me? I've got somebody who needs to be put in their place."
Midoriya blinked. "Wait, that was a real call?"
"Of course it was." Sonic wrinkled nose. "Actually, you should probably change out of those before we go. You live close by."
"Yeah. I-"
"Great!" Sonic hauled Midoriya onto his shoulder. "Just tell me where to go! I'll take you there faster than you can say, well, fast!"
"Wa-wait! You can't use your Quirk out in public!" Sonic scoffed. "I can't get in trouble if the cops don't see me!" With that, he took off, trying to ignore Midoriya's panicked cries as he did.
Toshinori chuckled. Yes, there are many strange circumstances surrounding the Nezumi family, but Jiyukaze had a heart of gold. Even if he tended to flaunt his speed. Now then, onto business.
Toshinori scoured the beach, looking for anything that belonged to Nezumi. Eventually, he found a light blue quill. He turned it around in his hands, inspecting it from every possible side. He then put it in a plastic baggie, ready to be delivered to Nedzu the next day.
From the bottom of his heart, Toshinori hoped that the triplets were not the result of experimentation.
How? How? HOW?
How did Tomura gain this immense power? Tomura decimated Garaki's Nomus without receiving any damage himself, how is this possible? And why was he rebelling against All for One in the first place?
The ruler of the Underworld focused on rebuilding his body. Tomura had managed to disintegrate more than half of it leaving only his upper body and a single arm. By the time he heard the child's footsteps, he had finished up to his elbow.
"Y'know, Solaris showed me something very, very interesting to me." For some reason, All for One's various regeneration Quirks stopped functioning. "Wanna know what he showed me?" A strange buzzing noise played. In his mind, various images flashed, each showing him forcefully fusing with Tomura.
"You LIED TO ME! YOU USED ME! YOU ONLY WANTED ME TO FULFILL YOUR OWN SELFISH GOALS!" All For One felt Tomura's hand on his newly formed leg. Even though it was disintegrating, it felt like millions of tiny hands were physically tearing him to pieces.
He wasn't going to let some deranged child best him. All For One thrust his hand forwards, but nothing happened. He listened closely, and only hearing a soft buzzing sound coming from Tomura.
"The Phantom Ruby is unstoppable! Nobody can stop me now, not even All Might!" He sounded absolutely insane. "DIE!"
