A month later Teddy sat in the OBs office.
"Dr Altman;" the nurse called.
Teddy followed the woman back and allowed herself to be weighed and some measurements taken.
"How are you feeling today," the OB asked entering the room.
"Tired," Teddy replied, "still getting nauseous."
"Nausea is still normal at this stage," the OB replied, "and your measurements look right on track."
"My pants are getting right," Teddy complained.
"You're slim," the OB answered, "your body won't hide baby too much longer."
"Their dad comes in three weeks and I'd like to still look like me then," Teddy said.
"Does the father know," the OB asked.
"He does," Teddy answered, "he's a trauma surgeon in Seattle. We're a couple. He's very excited to be a dad. He's coming in two weeks for 10 days then three weeks after that will meet me in Vienna for the surgical innovation conference."
"Your relationship with him is it romantic," the OB asked.
"Yes," Teddy replied, "I did my research. I'm still okay on my back for a little bit longer and keep the weight off my abdomen. He knows to be gentle. I went to Seattle a month ago to see him and it was fine."
"Positions you enjoyed a month ago and even now will change as the baby grows," the OB warned, "listen to your body and be gentle with yourself. That includes work outs. I see in your chart your military."
"I have informed my CO," Teddy replied, "and am doing modified work outs. I'm still doing as much as I safely can avoiding sit ups for now and will adjust as needed. I love to run and I'm slower but still running. I do 5 miles a day at least and want to continue that as long as I can."
"Run and walk as much and as long as you can," the OB agreed, "walk right up until you go into labour. Will your partner be here for that? Will they be coming to any appointments?"
"He will be to find out the gender," Teddy said, "and is coming when I hit 36 weeks his hospital can spare him for three months so he's going to spend the last month with me then the first two months with baby and I'm off for a couple months after that so baby and I will fly to Seattle and stay there until I have to come back to work."
Teddy finished her appointment and texted Owen the photos. He called her right away. She was glad she was in her office with the door closed and locked.
"They look good," Owen beamed as soon as Teddy answered his call
"They do," she smiled.
"How are you," he asked.
"Feeling a bit better today," she said, "still tired."
"Did you sleep," he asked.
"Not great," she said, "I slept better when you came or I was at your place."
"12 days, "he said.
"I know," she smiled, "11 nights alone for me."
"Do you work any of them," he asked.
"Tomorrow and Sunday," she said.
"You're chief of staff, why do you take so many nights," he asked.
"I need another cardio surgeon," she said, "I'm down because my other female surgeon is on maternity leave. I know I should stop the over nights."
"Once a week instead of twice," he suggested.
"I'm okay," she replied, "I might back to back them on the next rotation and do them Thursday and Friday then I have Saturday and Sunday to recover."
"Is it too much," he asked.
"My OR time is down right now," she said, "paper work and seeing other patients is fine."
"Are you eating," he asked.
"Much more and I won't be able to do up my pants," she admitted.
"You're," he started.
"Not yet," she said, "we still have to tell Megan and your mom is checking in every day."
"Do you want to tell Megan together," he asked.
"We could," she said, "when? I want to see her face but and tell her together that means waiting till Christmas and it'll be obvious the moment she walks in."
"We could wait," he said, "you won't tell her when she comes to teach?"
"Megan doesn't drink with her anti rejection meds," Teddy replied, "so why would I have any when she's with me."
"When does she get there," Owen asked.
"Tomorrow,' she answered, "six days to lie to your sister."
"Then 5 on your own and I'm there," he said, "you can do it."
"I can," she said, "I don't want to."
"I will be there for the whole month before they're born you'll be off we can have time together," he said, "I spoke to Bailey and she's keeping it to herself but she says congratulations."
"What did Miranda say," Teddy asked.
"I'm coming out for the last 4 weeks before your due date then can stay until 8 weeks after they're born. Hopefully everything will be good and you and the baby will fly to Seattle and so you'll take the last couple months of your leave here that way we can both be with them."
"Then I fly our 4 or 5 month old to Germany alone," she said.
"No," Owen replied, "I'll take a few days and fly with you and help you two settle and we'll work it out."
"I think I want to quit," she said, "I don't want to be here alone with out you. I don't want our baby not to see their dad every day. We know your going to be the better parent. I'm scared. I don't want to be here alone anymore. This job isn't what I want now. I took this after Henry. This was my escape from Seattle after that. I don't know if I can be alone."
"Right now tour thinking emotionally," he said, "let's look at the facts. I know you don't want to be alone. I don't want you to be. One of us moving is the best option. You would be losing so much professionally to leave. If I came I could make a lateral move."
"Your mom," Teddy said, "I want our baby to know their grandma. Megan and Riggs are in Malibu. It's a two hour flight to see them and she flies go to see your mom once a month."
He could see that she was getting emotional, "Teddy let's talk about this when I come. I want to be together and be the three of us. I don't want you making emotional decisions. And you've done that and made your career decisions for me. When you came to Seattle to lead cardio, when you nearly turned down MedCom."
"I'm choosing for our baby," she whined
"Your tired," he said, "you've been up at least 30 hours."
"I need a shower then," Teddy said.
"Are you off," he asked.
"I am," she answered.
"Go home," he said, "shower order your roast chicken and go to bed or watch a movie. We will talk together face to face and make a rational team decision. Teddy, I don't want you to walk away from a job you love."
"I love you and the baby more," she said.
"I know you do," he said, "I want to leave Grey Sloan and be with you. Maybe there's a military position closer you could look at? Megan said their chief of staff for the west coast is retiring. Maybe you apply to that and we can be west coast based."
"Owen, I want to be done with the military," she said, "I don't want to worry about possibly being sent into a war zone with our baby. I don't want to risk our baby not having a mom. You come back then we're both at risk. Owen, our kid needs two parents."
"They will have us," he assured, "and will know that their mom is a hero. That she has saved so many peoples lives. They will know that their mom is a bad ass who defends others. No making decisions until I see you face to face and we talk. Your tired and emotional right now. Wait for me to decide."
"I want to go talk to the general before I go," she said.
"Go but no quitting," he said.
"Requesting accommodations and new uniforms he has to sign off," she said.
"Go," he smiled, "take care of the two of you."
"I will," she said, "I love you."
"I love you two," he said, "tell our baby daddy loves them."
"Okay they love you two," she smiled, "have a good day let me know what cool things come in."
"I always do," he said, "I love you."
"I love you more," she replied before ending the call.
Owen texted Megan, "I know you go to Germany in a couple days to teach and are staying with Teddy. She wants you to stay."
Megan, "I want to see her. Do you know if she got the list of allergies and food restrictions?"
Owen, "it's Teddy she'll have it all figured out. She's excited to see you."
Megan, "she okay? She's not as chatty as normal."
Owen, "a lot on her mind and she's talking about quitting and coming to Seattle."
Megan, "to be with you?"
Owen, "yes. Long distance is hard. We talk every day but we always did that."
Megan, "what if you go back to the army? Apply to Germany and work for her."
Owen, "she wants west coast and to be closer to you and mom. You know her parents are gone and she was an only child. We're all she has. Your chief of staff is retiring."
Megan, "she's trying to get close to you. You need to get close to her Owen. There should be jewelry and a ring here."
Owen, "we've dated 3 months."
Megan, "it's Teddy! You've known her how long? I'm going to assume your visits have been part transatlantic booty calls
Owen, "I am not talking about that with you."
Megan, "we're adults it's okay to enjoy it. And it's Teddy you've loved her for 20 years. As soon as your divorce is final propose to Teddy."
Owen, "I filed when I got back from Germany. Two more months but she moved out when you were in the hospital. Amelia and I should have been together."
Megan, "then why were you?"
Owen, "she got it. The pain of losing a sibling. Her brother was hit by a semi. But she was never really there. She never got me like Teddy does. When Christina left I should have been with Teddy."
Megan, "does she want me to stay? It's not too late to get a hotel. She's been so quiet on the group chat."
Owen, "she does. Remember she's used to being alone and living on her own. She loves you and people. But she is used to space and quiet."
Megan, "so don't be annoying."
Owen, "No opera!"
Megan, "I only ever do that to you."
Owen, "Teddy is not an extension of me. She is amazing, brilliant and my person. She loves you but the opera and never being quiet is a lot for her. Plus she's never really done for the day. She's on call 24/7. She is the final say in that hospital."
Megan, "I get it be good."
Owen, "exactly. Is she picking you up?"
Megan, "no she's supposed to be in the OR then. I'm taking a cab to the hospital then she'll meet me. Treats she likes?"
Owen, "peanut butter cups, taco seasoning the spicy kind, bbq chips and ranch dip mix she likes the Trader Joe's one. But I go a week after you and have most of it."
Megan, "I'll take her peanut butter cups and bbq chips Lays?"
Owen, "she's not picky."
Megan, "wine? Does she have favourites."
Owen panicked. He had to put Megan off that Teddy was pregnant. He had to tell his sister something without revealing the secret. Teddy wanted them together to tell Megan and he was going to let Teddy decide when to tell. It was their baby but her body.
Owen, "not American ones and you don't drink so she won't with you. She didn't when she came to visit and Amelia was around if someone she's with doesn't drink she doesn't out of respect."
Megan, "no wine but chips and peanut butter cups."
Owen, "yes. I'm bening paged to the pit."
