Dear Owen,
Two more days and it's the busiest we've been in weeks. I can't believe we've run out of time to text or facetime. I miss you and seeing your face but two more days we can do this Hunt. It's official I'm starting to show not much but my jeans don't do up anymore and maternity pants are more comfortable so I'm not squishing the baby. I think I'm the only one who really notices but I am switching my uniform just to be comfortable. I have the option for personal business clothes and do that a lot so that may buy me more time, my dresses still work. The General isn't totally thrilled I'm taking 8 months and has said I'll have to make it up and finish my contract. We'll cross that bridge when we get there. I don't think that's how it works so I'm going to reach out to someone else and see.
I saw the doctor today, 14 weeks, 3.5 months and she said the baby looks good. Baby is growing right on track and the heart beat, I wish you could have heard it, it sounded absolutely perfect. With my so-called advanced age the doctor wants to see me every two weeks from this point even though both of us are perfectly healthy. But that means since you're coming for two weeks you'll get to come to the next one and she agreed we could try to see the gender, if the baby is shy you've got a couple days with me after the conference in November.
I think I have almost everything organised for your birthday next week, it's going to look a little different this year. I know we usually go to a bar but I'm not drinking. However I have another idea I think you might like. It's Saturday and I think I have a perfect Owen day planned.
You have a busy day and I'm heading to bed.
I love you,
Teddy
She pressed send and sat back on the couch for a minute.
"Okay baby we'll see daddy soon," she smiled rubbing her stomach, "daddy is going to be so surprised to see how big you're getting. I miss him. I don't want to be here anymore. I don't want to be alone with you. We need to be with daddy. Daddy won't move here. I think we have to move to Seattle."
Teddy began to wonder, what if she emailed Bailey? She knew it would be a step down from her current position but they hadn't filled Nathan's job yet. She could go to Grey Sloan and work in cardio. Pierce was young and inexperienced but she was decent. Teddy could still have a voice in cardio under Pierce.
Owen smiled seeing the email from Teddy as he came out of the OR. He read it trying to picture her. His mind jumped forward a few months to her cradling their baby in her arms, rocking and soothing the little one. He could see her sitting in her window seat holding their daughter. Somehow he always pictured a baby girl, he knew she disagreed and went back and forth of if they were having a boy or girl. Owen always pictured her holding a tiny girl in a pink onesie and hat, or himself playing soccer with a little girl who looked just like her mom, blonde pigtails flying as she ran.
"Bailey," Owen called from her office door.
"Here to take more time for transatlantic booty calls with Altman," Bailey snapped.
"I need more time," Owen said, "but it's not purely social. I need to spend more time there with her. She needs me."
"Is Altman okay," Bailey asked.
"Teddy is 14 weeks pregnant with our baby," Owen said, "she needs me. I have 2 weeks starting tomorrow and will be there with her."
"Congratulations," Bailey smiled, "how is she doing?"
"She's finding some parts a challenge for sure," Owen said, "but she's doing okay. Better the last couple weeks."
"When is she due," Bailey asked.
"March 20," Owen replied, "I would like to be there."
"What if you left March 3," Bailey suggested, "two weeks before then I'm sure I can make 3 months with your newborn work."
"I was hoping to go at the end of February," Owen said, "spend the last month with her so we can really prepare together. She's off work 3 weeks before her due date at the latest and could be as early as 6 weeks before. She's older than me she's higher risk."
"Is she okay," Bailey asked, "is the baby?"
"She had an ultrasound today," Owen said, 'she sent me pictures."
"Let me see," Bailey demanded.
Owen showed her the picture.
"Wow," Bailey said, "when did you see Altman?"
"6 weeks ago," Owen said, "she flew out to tell me. Then I go to her place, she's going to the Vienna and London conferences."
"Work trips to see your girlfriend," Bailey said.
"Doubling up when we can," Owen said, "I'm taking 3 days after the London conference. It's Teddy's birthday the last day of the conference. It's the third week of November then she's coming for 18 days for Christmas."
"Can she come then," Bailey asked.
"She can," Owen said, "but it will be her last trip until she has the baby."
"Hunt, do I need a new head of trauma," Bailey asked.
"I have time left on my contract and so does Teddy," Owen replied, "we're trying to decide what to do. She's talking about quitting but would need something lined up."
"We have a cardio spot filling what Riggs left," Bailey said, "but she's been chief of surgery."
"Chief of staff," Owen said, "but with our baby she might be okay to step back a little. She's saying she just wants to be with me and the baby."
"Why don't her and I talk when she comes for Christmas," Bailey said, "Ben and I will have you two over for dinner."
"That would be good," Owen said, "I'll let Teddy know. And Megan will be in town for Christmas. She doesn't know yet. Teddy wants to tell her in person."
"But by Christmas," Bailey said.
"28 weeks," Owen replied, "Megan will be happy."
"Are you sure Altman is okay," Bailey asked.
"Lonely," Owen replied, "we talk, text and face time but it's not the same."
"You're there for how long," Bailey asked.
"A week," Owen said, "teaching in her hospital."
"I should expect you to be gone more than you're here," Bailey asked.
"Yes," Owen said, "I've talked to Kepner she's coming back to run trauma with me. I trust her with the admin side. She's good at that."
"Kepner can come back as co head of trauma if thats what you need," Bailey said.
"Right now for Teddy and our baby it is," Owen said, "Kepner knows it's temporary."
"Does she know why," Bailey asked.
"Not yet," Owen said, "she just knows Teddy and I have some personal stuff going on. I'd like you to keep this between us. Teddy really wants it kept quiet until viability but you needed the truth."
"I appreciate it," Bailey said, "your going to be a good dad. Will I get to meet your baby?"
"Yes," Owen said, "we're thinking that when my time off is up Teddy will still have a couple months and she would come here so I'll get the first 5-6 months with both of them."
"Will you find out the gender," Bailey asked.
"We will," Owen said, "hopefully this trip."
"Asking Altman to marry you," Bailey asked.
"Not yet," Owen said, "I don't want her to think it's just because of the baby. She's Teddy. She's my best friend first."
Bailey was paged.
"Congratulations Hunt," Bailey smiled, "congratulate Altman for me."
Owen finally answered Teddy's email.
Hello Love,
They look great! Thank you for sending the pictures and video. I can't wait to see you, only a couple more days. I'm sure you look gorgeous. Not much going on here. Megan is still being a pain in my ass about you hiding something. I've told her not to worry but you know my sister, she has to know everything and have her opinion.
I did talk to Bailey about all the time off I need and have told her why. I had been booking time without saying why. She wanted me to pass on her congratulations and would like us to have dinner with her and Ben when you're here for Christmas. Bailey did mention that there is a cardio opening if you were interested. I know you like the idea of Seattle this week. I'm also considering the possibility of Germany and coming to you. I don't want you stressing about a move now. I don't want you to give up everything you've worked so hard for. Teddy you are such a leader there and making a huge impact I don't want you to lose that. Let's talk about all of our options together.
Spending my birthday with you is all I want to do. I want to be with you and be together. Our time apart is getting harder and I know that's only going to be more challenging as it gets closer to our baby arriving. I can't wait to see you and have you in my arms.
Love,
Owen.
