A few weeks after Owen and Teddy had moved into their house Evelyn decided to go surprise Teddy with an outing for lunch and a pedicure. Teddy was now off work with her due date a only couple days away and Evelyn wanted to spend time with Teddy and check in. She thought surprising Teddy would be a good idea.
"Hi," Teddy greeted, surprised to see Evelyn, "Owens at work."
"I know," Evelyn replied, "I thought you might want to do lunch and a pedicure with me?"
"I do," Teddy agreed, "I just got back from a walk and my feet are angry."
"Don't over do it," Evelyn advised.
"I didn't," Teddy assured, "I just walked down to the coffee place for a scone and a decaf latte."
"Are you okay," Evelyn asked.
"I'm okay," Teddy assured.
"Can I take you for lunch and a pedicure," Evelyn asked.
"I'll go with you but I can get my own," Teddy said.
"Let me spoil you please," Evelyn said, "Teddy you didn't let me throw you a baby shower or help with getting things for the nursery. Come have lunch and a pedicure with me."
"You did the rocking chair and horse," Teddy replied.
"Please let me spoil you today," Evelyn said, "you need to relax and feel good before this little girl comes."
"I guess," Teddy agreed.
"I'll drive," Evelyn said, "you just relax today."
"I like to," Teddy said.
"Just let me," Evelyn said, "I know you miss your mom sweetheart and need a mom right now. Can you try to let me be your mom?"
Teddy nodded.
"Shoes and your sweater sweetheart," Evelyn prompted.
"Should I change," Teddy asked looking down at her blue dress.
"You look good," Evelyn, "do you feel okay?"
"Round," Teddy said, "heavy. I'm ready to meet her."
"I want to meet her," Evelyn agreed, "a few more days. What do you feel like eating?"
"Nothing in particular," Teddy said, " I should hang up her onesies to dry before we go. It's her last load of laundry. Then I have a pile of Owen's scrubs and work out clothes to put in."
"Your scrubs," Evelyn asked.
"I've been using hospital ones so I didn't have to buy maternity scrubs," Teddy said.
"Do you have scrubs," Evelyn asked.
"Not in Grey Sloan colours. Lots of brown and beige ones," Teddy said, "uniforms. I have my caps but that's all I'm going to keep. I brought my army scrubs in case but."
"You didn't know where you were working it makes sense," Evelyn agreed.
"It did," Teddy said, "but I should figure out what to do with them."
"You'll get new ones," Evelyn said.
"I will," Teddy agreed, "Owens 25 sets is a bit much but he's been there so long I get it."
"The navy blue is dignified," Evelyn said.
"It is," Teddy agreed, "I wore red in residency and purple as a fellow, mint green at Columbia. Navy is good. But I'm not going to buy right away. I want to have her let my body adjust a bit."
"You've always been active," Evelyn assured.
"My mom was heavier and so is my sister but Marilyn has some auto immune challenges," Teddy replied.
"Teddy don't worry about that now," Evelyn cautioned, "you know your body and if it changes it does. You'll have your baby and Owen loves you, he won't care."
Sitting for pedicures Evelyn asked, "what happened with you and Megan a couple weeks ago?"
"I was just hormonal and didn't react well to her," Teddy said, "I need to call her. I was frustrated that I couldn't do what I wanted. I said some things I shouldn't have."
"Okay," Evelyn said, "please clear the air. The two of you have always been such good friends."
"I will," Teddy said, "moving day was hard."
"You've lived with people before," Evelyn said.
"Roommates," Teddy agreed, "Henry. But not like this. There's so much more expectation."
"He loves you," Evelyn assured, "who are you worried about letting down?"
"Our daughter, Owen, Megan, you," Teddy answered, "not being a good mom."
"You need to breathe," Evelyn said, 'you've been on edge since you had that scare. Your daughter is going to be so loved and she has everything she needs. She has a mom and dad who love her. She has me and Megan and Nathan. She will be loved and that's the most important thing."
"I never thought I would be a mom," Teddy said, "I thought that chance was long gone."
"She's a gift Teddy," Evelyn said, "I remember when I had Megan, my mom had passed just after Owen was born and then I was expecting Megan and I just wanted my mom. She had been gone a couple years and I missed her more than I ever had."
Teddy nodded, "I wish my mom could hold her and see her. My mom would just love this. I have a million questions I want to ask her and I can't."
"You can ask me," Evelyn assured.
"It's not the same," Teddy said, "I love you and appreciate everything you're doing for us and have done for us. I want my mom."
"Marilyn,' Evelyn asked.
"No," Teddy said, "I can't rub it in with her."
"She's not happy for you," Evelyn asked.
"She is but she's slightly jealous," Teddy said, 'they thought they were all lined up to adopt a baby boy due three weeks after our baby but now the birth mom is changing her mind about giving the baby up. Marilyn and Rob tried for years to get pregnant, she's had every possible treatment, rounds and rounds of IVF, 5 or 6 miscarriages and me getting pregant at our age by accident. It's hard for her. I love my sister too much to rub it in. Mar's wanted to be a mom since we were little girls, when we would play pretend she was the mom and I was the doctor she brought her baby to. Its the one thing she's always wanted."
"Teddy," Evelyn sighed, "the people who love you should be supporting you and loving you. Can you let Megan and I love you?"
"I'm trying," Teddy said, "I'm not used to it. Usually only Owen cares about me."
"We're your family," Evelyn assured, "we love you."
"Thank you," Teddy said, "when she comes can you help us?"
"I've been waiting for you to ask," Evelyn said.
"You'll be the first to meet her once she's here," Teddy said, "she needs her grandma."
"She will," Evelyn agreed, "I'm excited to have her close. I love Faroke but I don't see him enough."
"We don't," Teddy agreed, "they're coming for Easter."
"They are next week," Evelyn agreed.
"I'll call her before they come," Teddy said, "she's working today?"
"She's doing early shifts," Evelyn said, "she's off at 3. She's doing 6-3 so she's around at night for Faorke."
"We'll have to figure it out," Teddy said.
"How long are you off," Evelyn asked.
"12-16 weeks," Teddy replied, "it depends on how we're doing."
"Is Owen taking any time," Evelyn asked.
"A month," Teddy replied, "I can't let him down."
"You're not going to," Evelyn assured, "he loves you."
"I know he does," Teddy smiled, "that's why I can't let him down."
"No," Evelyn said, "Teddy you are the one person that he's ever been able to truly be himself with. I've see it all, the highschool girlfriends, college girls, Beth, Chrsitina, Amelia. But he's different with you, calmer, more relaxed."
"I'm the same with him," Teddy admitted, "I can be myself in ways I can't with anyone else."
"Tell him," Evelyn said.
Getting home that afternoon Teddy tried to FaceTime Megan.
"Baby," Megan asked the moment she picked up.
"Not yet," Teddy said, "just waiting."
"Are you working," Megan asked.
"I'm off," Teddy said, "ready to meet her. How's Faroke?"
"Good," Megan said.
"Are you doing okay," Teddy asked.
"Exhausted, I had a hard surgery today," Megan said.
They chatted about the surgery for a few minutes.
"I spent the day with your mom," Teddy said.
"How is she," Megan asked.
"We had a good day," Teddy smiled.
"You're not saying something," Megan said.
"I've been rude," Teddy admitted, "I didn't know how to accept your excitement."
"I understand," Megan said, "Owen and I have talked. Your sister isn't being supportive."
"It's hard," Teddy agreed, "but it's not fair to you."
"Teddy I'm okay," Megan said, "you've just moved across the globe, gave up your dream job and bought a house. You've had so much on your plate that if you're a little withdrawn and need space to think I get it. You drop everything for Owen and I. He could have and should have gone to you."
"It was my choice," Teddy replied, "I wanted to be here. Near you and your mom."
"I'm still a two hour flight," Megan said.
"And we will come down," Teddy agreed.
"Once she can fly," Megan said.
"Yes," Teddy agreed, "we'll all need the sun. Maybe we can all go camping this summer meet halfway?"
"That would be good," Megan said, "I'll take all the baby cuddles and you can have her back with a dirty diaper."
"Nope," Teddy laughed, "Owen can. I get her back for food."
"How is it working," Megan asked.
"We'll work it out," Teddy smiled, "but she's almost here."
"You feel okay," Megan asked.
"Just," Teddy admitted, "lunch and a pedicure with your mom today helped."
"Good," Megan said.
"Are we okay," Teddy asked sounding hesitant.
"We are," Megan assured, "when she arrives don't wait 20 some odd weeks to tell me."
"We won't," Teddy assured, "your mom then you."
"Okay mom can know first," Megan agreed.
"How's Faroke doing with school," Teddy asked, knowing it had been hit an miss."
"Refusing to work because it's hard but he has to do it," Megan replied, "he'll get there. It's his first year of school and he's in 5th."
"Reading," Teddy asked.
"Coming," Megan said, "he did really well on his math test yesterday though. His teacher is doing something with 3D printers, he loves it and is doing all sorts of designs for it on Nate's computer."
"When is his birthday," Teddy asked.
"June," Megan replied, "he'll be 11."
"Birthday present," Teddy suggested.
"Not spoiling," Megan said.
"Rob my brother in law does it as a hobby and he said they can be a couple hundred bucks for basic ones," Teddy replied.
"We can't spoil your baby you can't spoil my son," Megan countered.
"11 years of birthdays in one," Teddy tried.
"Teddy focus on your baby," Megan said.
"She has everything she needs," Teddy smiled, "let us spoil your son. Maybe we can visit and celebrate his birthday."
"I'd like that," Megan agreed, "Teddy we're good."
"Okay," Teddy said, "I knew I hurt you."
"It wasn't what you needed then," Megan agreed.
"It wasn't," Teddy agreed, "but I didn't need to push you away."
"I meddle," Megan said, "it's how I show I love you."
"I'm getting used to people loving me again," Teddy said, "for decades it's only been Owen who's really cared about me. I'm the one that cares for everyone else."
"And let us look after you too," Megan said.
"I'll try," Teddy agreed.
"Now do I get a name," Megan asked.
"Not until she's here," Teddy said, "you know more than your mom does. Let us save this as a surprise for the world."
"I want to know," Megan said.
"I'm due in two days," Teddy said, "you can know when she's here."
"Please," Megan begged.
"Nope," Teddy said, "I promised Owen."
"I'll bug the dumb dumb," Megan said.
"Mom mom mom," Faroke yelled in the back ground.
"You go see him we'll talk later," Teddy smiled.
"Talk to you soon," Megan said, "love you."
"Love you too," Teddy replied.
Owen walked in from work and found Teddy on the couch reading.
"Good day," Owen asked.
"Ya," Teddy replied, "I hung out with your mom. How was work?"
"Good," Owen said.
"I miss work, tell me about work," Teddy begged.
"It's been three days," Owen scolded softly.
"Tell me about the OR," Teddy said.
"Or we could go for a drive," he suggested.
"And you can tell me about surgery," she said.
"You're addicted to it," he teased.
"When have I not worked," she asked.
"You always work," he agreed, "take the time Teddy. Enjoy the time. Be with our baby girl."
"It would be better if she was here," Teddy whined.
"Soon," he said, "any day now."
"When," she asked.
"When she's ready," he said, "she can come any time. Let's go for a drive out by the water, maybe get fish and chips?"
"That sounds good," she agreed.
Owen took her hand and led her to the truck before helping her in.
