Log 13: Fire Safety

Cover Image: Yukiko held two tiny flames in her hands. One of the flames had Ben's face, it was grinning childishly. The other had Gwen's face, frowning at the Ben flame for being childish.

Yukiko just sighed at both, used to their antics.

Gwen placed her spell book onto the picnic table, quickly looking over the spell one more time. Once she was certain she had the movements memorized she turned back to Yukiko. "Okay, Yukiko. I think I have the spell down."

The heiress got up from the lawn chair, placing her book onto the seat. Gwen had requested her assistance in mastering a fire spell last night and Yukiko happily agreed. Gwen's thought process was that since Yukiko uses fire magic, then she'd be her best possible help in using fire.

Her other option was Heatblast, but she didn't trust the doofus to not try and humiliate her in some way.

Yukiko clasped her hands together. "Alright, Gwen. Give it a go!"

"Right!" Gwen closed her eyes to concentrate. Inside of her body the young girl was trying to concentrate her mana. She was still trying to improve on her mana control with certain spells. Her current mana pool wasn't as high as she liked. If the spells were too high level then there was a chance that her mana would flow out of focus to try and fill in the empty space.

"Remember, Gwen, you have to concentrate completely. Focus on where the spell needs to go to exit your body, not just your center," Yukiko instructed. From her own experience there were times she and her friends would waste too much energy, especially when they were new to fighting. Either using spells that used up too much energy on small enemies or would spread out their power in too small of doses.

Gwen nodded her head, pushing out her hands. "Meena Goh!"

POOF!

Gwen pouted at the puff of smoke that poofed out of her hands. Huffing in annoyance Gwen repeated the steps and pushed out her mana.

POOF!

She tried again.

POOF!

Again.

POOF!

And again.

POOF!

"AGH!" Gwen stomped her feet. "THIS IS DUMB!" Running back over to her spell book, Gwen reanalyzed the page. "What am I doing wrong!?"

Yukiko placed a comforting hand on Gwen's shoulder. "Gwen, are you sure you have enough mana for this spell? Maybe you should try a different one?"

"No!" Gwen refused. "I can get this one! I just need to figure out the problem!" Gwen sighed, never having struggled when it came to practicing the things she read in school. She looked up at her cousin. "Did you ever have trouble producing your fire?"

Yukiko thought back to the past year. "Not exactly, the fire always came out of Konohana Sakuya back then. Unless I was really exhausted, though there were times I had issues controlling my magic."

"Like what?"

"I almost set Yosuke-kun's pants on fire when we were training inside of the TV. We were hoping to get my fire control under control."

Gwen chuckled. "That must've been a sight-"

"There was also that time that I accidentally hit Chie-chan in the butt with a missed Agi spell. Snrk! Pfft!" Yukiko had to stifle her own laughter at the memory.

"Heh, guess you all got a good laugh-"

"Then I used a Maragi at the wrong time and set Kanji-kun on fire. Chie-chan had to work quickly with her ice spells to cool him off."

Gwen's laughter turned into nervousness.

"Another time I had gotten hit with an attack that left me dizzy, Yu-kun had told me to stay back and recover. Though, because of how dizzy I was I didn't hear him clearly and released an attack. Poor Rise-chan's hair got set on fire."

Gwen had stopped laughing at this point. Especially as Yukiko seemed to have trapped herself in her memory muttering. "Uh, Yukiko?"

"Then that time I got confused by an enemy and hit myself with a spell."

"Yukiko."

"Almost hit everyone with a Burning Petals once-"

"YUKIKO!"

"Huh? Oh sorry, Gwen. What were we talking about?" Yukiko asked.

Gwen just stared at her cousin for a brief minute. Even after knowing Yukiko for half a month, the heiress' thought process still confused her. "I was going to try the spell one more time."

"Oh right! Let's get right to it!" Yukiko skipped back over to the open area, forgetting about the previous conversation.

Rolling her eyes at Yukiko, Gwen stood in the clearing. Pushing out her hands, Gwen focused entirely on pushing out as much mana as she could. She figured that if slowly concentrating it wasn't going to work then speeding up the process may help better. However, the heat that was growing in the center of her hands was growing a bit too much.

Yukiko's eyes widened at how brightly Gwen's hands were glowing. "Gwen! GWEN STOP!"

Gwen's eyes snapped open. "Wha-"

BOOM!

"EEEKKK!" Both screamed as a bright beam of fire shot out of Gwen's hands. A loud explosion shook the forest from the power that was put into the spell. Immediately the door to the Rustbucket opened up to reveal both Ben and Max.

"Girls, what's going on!?" Max asked. The first thing he noticed was that the two of them were lying on the ground.

Ben looked over at the forest. "Uh, Grandpa. There's a fire!"

Max looked up to see that some of the forest had been blown apart and was on route to turning into a really big forest fire. "Ben, you know what to do!"

Ben was already running forward with the Omnitrix activated. "One Heatblast solution coming right up!" Ben transformed into the Pyronite. He quickly got to work on absorbing the fire to stop the forest fire.

Max checked on the girls. "Are you two alright?"

"Other than my bruised pride then yeah," Gwen muttered. She stared at the ground in frustration until Yukiko pulled her into a hug. "Yukiko?"

"Don't be sad, Gwen. We all make mistakes," Yukiko said.

"Yeah, but only an idiot would start a forest fire."

"HEY!" Heatblast yelled, insulted.

Ignoring him, Yukiko just pulled Gwen onto her lap. "I wouldn't call you an idiot, Gwen. Thankfully, the fire is getting put out before too much damage is being done to it. There's always next time to get it down."

Gwen felt like a child being put in Yukiko's lap like this, but something about the way she was being held reminded her of her mother. "Do you really think I can get it down?"

"Of course! Just with a little more practice and a few less trees around us," Yukiko grinned.

Gwen smiled, leaning into Yukiko. "I'd like that. Thanks."

"Anything for you, Gwen."
