PART ONE
Charlotte Page slowly opened her eyes as she felt herself wake up. She didn't want to wake up, or at least move. She was warm and comfy and for the first time in almost a week, had a decent night's sleep.
She felt the mattress move and Charlotte glanced over her shoulder. Curled up behind her, with his arm around her body was Henry Hart. He showed signs of him starting to wake up. Charlotte smiled to herself. He was cute when he slept.
The last three days had been a rollercoaster of emotions for Henry, Charlotte and the rest of Team Danger. Drex's attack on the Man Cave and the Hart household had changed things for everyone, not least for Henry. Kid Danger was now dead.
Since Henry had emerged from the wreckage of the blimp crash, he and Charlotte had been glued to each other. They had always been attached at the hip to some extent their entire friendship. School, hanging out, studying together and then working together. A day hadn't passed where Henry and Charlotte didn't see each other.
But something had shifted between them. Neither of them were entirely sure when it happened but they both freely admitted to each other that they were more than friends in some way. They wouldn't be lying in bed together (completely dressed might I add) if they weren't.
'Morning' said Henry tiredly. He nudged Charlotte's head with his nose.
'Morning' she replied quietly. 'What time is it?' Henry glanced over his shoulder awkwardly.
'6.30' he answered.
'I better go,' said Charlotte, though she made no attempt at extricating herself from her current location.
'Stay' mumbled Henry, pulling her closer. That being said, they probably couldn't get any closer, curled up on Henry's twin bed.
'I don't want my parents to find my bed empty' she said. Henry opened his eyes and looked at Charlotte. At 1 am, she had suddenly appeared at his window, struggling to sleep. He too had been struggling to sleep but with Charlotte next to him, Henry had managed to get some shut eye and felt better for it. They both felt better for it.
Realising that they couldn't stay in Henry's bed all day, they both got up, Henry climbing up the steps and opening the window.
'Dude, do I really have to go out of the window?' asked Charlotte. 'We're 18. Aren't we passed the whole sneaking in and out of windows?'
'What about last night?'
'It was 1 in the morning.'
'My mom likes to get up early.'
'Then we'll have to be really quiet.'
Henry and Charlotte crept down the stairs, hoping they wouldn't be spotted.
'Hi Charlotte' came Kris's voice. They looked down and saw Kris sitting on the sofa, flipping through a magazine, coffee cup in hand.
'Mom' said Henry, awkwardly. 'Charlotte just came over to-'
'Don't even try to come with some excuse Henry' said Kris, getting up. 'I found the two of you asleep in your bed last night, plus Charlotte's car has been parked outside our house all night.'
'Wait, you found us asleep?' asked Henry, shocked.
'I came into your room to check on you and saw the two of you curled up in bed together' explained Kris.
'You came into my room.'
'Henry, you almost died three days ago' said Kris, her jolly tone disappearing. 'Both of you and Jasper almost died. Forgive me for wanting to check that my son and his girlfriend were OK.' That shut up Henry. It shut both of them up.
'I'd better go' said Charlotte. She made her way to the front door and out of the Hart house, Henry followed. He pulled her into another tight hug.
He had almost lost her three days ago. If Jasper hadn't been in the Man Cave and actually listened to him.
She had almost lost him three days ago. If the Omega weapon hadn't exploded and given him his force field.
Kris watched her son say goodbye to his friend, hugging her tight. The two of them had been through a lot recently. Kris had this sinking feeling that she and Jake, along with Jasper and Charlotte's parents, could have been planning funerals for their children instead of futures. It was not something she wanted to be reminded of.
Charlotte got in her car and drove home. Henry watched her car go around the corner, then turned around and went back into the house. He went to the kitchen and got some breakfast, Kris watching her son.
'Mom, you're staring' said Henry. Kris sat down at the kitchen table next to Henry.
'Does Charlotte know?' she asked. Henry looked at her, a quizzical look on his face.
'Know what?
'That you're in love with her.' Henry spluttered.
'I don't know what you're talking about,' he said.
'Henry, there's been enough secrets in this house' said Kris. Henry put his spoon down and sighed.
'Not in so many words.'
'Has she told you that she loves you?' Henry's silence gave Kris her answer.
'It's just...' began Henry.
'Complicated?' offered Kris. Henry nodded.
'With everything that happened in the last few months'
'You don't know which way is up or what to feel' finished Kris.
'Could you stop finishing my sentences Mom?' said Henry, making Kris chuckle. 'Char and I just came very close to losing a really good friend' he added.
'I didn't see Jasper in your room last night' said Kris. 'They were both down in the Man Cave. They both could have died. '
'Yeah and I'd be sad if I lost Jasper. He's like a brother.'
'But you also didn't correct me when I called Charlotte your girlfriend' pointed out Kris. Henry didn't know what to say to that.
'Charlotte asked me to join her in Dystopia' he said after a while.
'Really?' Henry nodded. 'You thinking of going?'
'I don't know. Maybe. I don't know.' Henry felt like he was at a crossroads, and not just regarding Charlotte. Kris turned to her son.
'Look, Henry, you're 18 so you can take my advice or leave it, but I don't think you should go to Dystopia.'
'Why not?' asked Henry.
'Well, for a start, you still haven't graduated high school' said Kris. Henry laughed. 'Secondly, I think it would be good for you, Jasper and Charlotte to spend some time apart from each other.'
'What?' Henry didn't understand.
'I'm not saying that your friendship with those two is a bad thing. The complete opposite' said Kris. 'But it's always been the three of you, through thick and thin. And especially with you and Charlotte. You have known each other for so long. Between school, work, hanging out and studying, the two of you have been practically attached at the hip. I think you should take some time away from each other to figure out who you all are individually. By all means, keep in contact, but do your own thing.'
'So going to Dystopia might not be a good idea?' asked Henry.
'7000 miles away from home, in a city and country that aren't exactly stable' said Kris. 'The only thing that would be familiar would be Charlotte, your best friend of 12 years, who you've just admitted might be more than a friend. I can just see the two of you latch onto each other and not let go. Now is the time in life to explore and find out who you are. Who is Henry Hart? Especially Henry Hart without Kid danger?'
Henry looked at his mother.
'What do you think we should do?' he asked. Kris smiled.
'I think you should stick with your original plans' she said.
'Charlotte to Dystopia. Jasper to Harberd' said Henry. Kris nodded.
'And I think you stay here. Only for a short time. A gap year' she added. 'Go to summer school and graduate. Get a job and be a normal 18 year old guy. Volunteer somewhere or go to community college or even go travelling. Do something for you. Not for you and Jasper. Or you and Charlotte.'
'Jasper calls us Chenry' said Henry.
'Huh?'
'Chenry. An amalgamation of our names though Ray prefers Henlotte.' Kris burst out laughing. 'You might be right, Mom' he added.
'Really?'
'Kid Danger took over my life for six years. I've no idea who I am without him. Perhaps I should figure that out before I do anything else.'
Henry and Jasper stood at the top of Mount Swellview waiting for Charlotte. It had been cleaned up since Kid Danger had crashed the blimp into it, though there were still signs of what happened that night.
'You OK?' asked Jasper.
'Yeah' said Henry, though both guys knew how weird it really was. Henry had run that night's events over and over again in his mind. So many things could have gone wrong or differently and if they had, Henry dreaded to think what they would be doing now.
'Isn't it normally Charlotte waiting for us to arrive?' said Jasper, making Henry laugh.
'I'm here. I'm here' said Charlotte, running over to them. 'Sorry, I had to sort out some paperwork for Dystopia.'
'Everything OK?' asked Henry.
'Yeah,' said Charlotte, 'just medical stuff.'
'So, Hen, what's going on?' asked Jasper.
'I've been doing some thinking' said Henry.
'Oh no' said Charlotte. Jasper and Henry laughed.
'I think we should stick with our original plans for after high school' said Henry.
'What?' asked Jasper.
'I think we shouldn't go to Dystopia, at least only Charlotte should go.'
'I don't understand,' she said.
'Go and volunteer with that charity. Help set all those schools.' Henry turned to Jasper. 'Go to Harberd and prove your parents wrong.' Jasper gave a weary chuckle. His parents weren't exactly supportive of Jasper going to college. They were conservative, and had worked blue-collar jobs their entire life and disagreed with the concept of higher education. Jasper on the other hand, had joined the Democrats as soon as he was old enough to and had dreams of going to college.
'What are you going to do?' asked Charlotte.
'I'm going to stay here' said Henry.
'In Swellview?' asked Jasper.
'Yeah' confirmed Henry. 'Go to summer school and graduate. Get a job, maybe take some classes at community college. Just be a normal 18 year old guy and figure out who I am without Kid Danger.'
The three of them looked over at the spot earmarked for Kid Danger's statue. The memorial would be in a couple of days. Team Danger were all still coming to terms with what had happened that day.
'Well, I don't go to Harberd until September,' said Jasper.
'Yeah, I'm still in Swellview for another couple weeks' said Charlotte.
'OK' said Henry.
'What do we do in the meantime?' asked Jasper.
'What we normally do?' suggested Henry. 'Games, movies, hang out. Maybe help with me summer school.' Jasper and Charlotte laughed.
'I have one question,' said Jasper.
'What?' asked Charlotte.
'What exactly is going on with Chenry?'
Henry and Charlotte walked down the road, after saying goodbye to Jasper at his parent's house.
'So' said Henry. 'About what Jasper said.' Charlotte gave an awkward chuckle. It had been several hours since Jasper asked if the two of them were dating. Henry and Charlotte quickly protested any hint of a relationship but both knew that Jasper wasn't buying it. They weren't buying it either.
'I don't know Henry' said Charlotte. Henry looked at Charlotte.
'You know where I stand, Char' he said.
'I do' she said. 'I also can't stop thinking about this morning.'
'Which bit?'
'The bit where your mom called me your girlfriend and you didn't deny it.'
'You didn't deny it either' pointed out Henry.
Charlotte stopped walking and faced Henry. God, he was handsome. She loved those blond curls on top of his head. Subconsciously, Charlotte reached a hand and brushed those curls out his face. Henry smiled and reached for Charlotte's hand. He pulled her close and pressed his lips to hers.
Their first kiss.
'So?' asked Henry, a smile on his face when they pulled apart.
'It was nice,' replied Charlotte, also smiling.
'Yeah?'
'Uh huh' she said. 'But what are we going to do, Henry?' asked Charlotte. 'I'm going 7000 miles away.'
'For a year. Twelve months. 52 weeks. 365 days. Then you'll be home. Why are you so hesitant?' he asked.
'I'm not Hen' said Charlotte. 'Maybe a little but that's only because I don't want to ruin our friendship.'
'I don't want that either but we can't ignore these feelings' said Henry.
'OK' said Charlotte eventually. 'How about this? We do nothing for now. But over the next year, we try to figure out what our feelings actually are. Maybe they're a symptom of everything that has happened in the last few months, or maybe they're genuine.'
'So what, we'll see other people?' asked Henry, wanting clarification.
'Perhaps. That's up to you. I doubt I'm going to have many dating opportunities in Dystopia.' Henry laughed.
They stared at each other, not really knowing what to say next. It wasn't a break up, yet it felt like a break up. Deep down, they knew that time away would be good for them individually and potentially as a couple. It didn't stop them from being scared though.
Charlotte tentatively stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Henry, who returned her hug.
'Come on' he said eventually. 'We better get home.'
Two weeks later, Henry and Jasper were at Charlotte's house, saying goodbye. They wouldn't see their friend for another year.
Charlotte's dad, Christopher Page put his daughter's backpack into the trunk of the car.
'You got everything?' he asked Charlotte.
'Yes Dad' said Charlotte.
'Passport?' asked Henry.
'Yes.'
'Tickets?' asked her mother, Evelyn Page.
'Yes.'
'Snacks for the plane?' asked Jasper.
'Yes' Charlotte practically shouted for the third time and everyone laughed.
'Come here' said Jasper, his arms out wide for a hug, before wrapping them around Charlotte. 'I'm gonna miss you' he said.
'Me too' said Charlotte. 'Good luck at Harberd. Have fun. Actually go to class. Make sure you write down all your deadlines because I'm not going to be there to remind you, and do laundry every week not once a month or once every two months and-'
'Char I'll be fine' said Jasper, giving her one last squeeze. He stepped away so Charlotte and Henry could say goodbye.
'I'm gonna miss you too' he said.
'Same' said Charlotte. She stepped forward and pulled Henry into a hug. 'Don't get into any trouble or on top of any blimps.' Henry gave a sad chuckle.
'Stay safe' he said quietly, before placing a small kiss on her temple.
'You too.' Charlotte pulled away. 'I don't know what communication is going to be like' she said. 'We're going to be in some remote places for several weeks, so I'll email when I can.'
'OK' said Henry. 'You know where to find me.'
'Charlotte' called her dad. 'We've got to get going.'
'Oh Dad' she replied. Jasper and Henry watched as the three Pages got into the car and waved as they drove away.
Sitting in the backseat of her parent's car, Charlotte heard her phone beep and pulled it out of her pocket. A message from Henry.
Love you. H x.
Charlotte smiled to herself.
'What is it?' asked Evelyn.
'Nothing Mom' said Charlotte, still smiling. It would be a very different year, not having Henry and Jasper around, especially Henry, but Charlotte was excited the next twelve months.
And the twelve months after that.
Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed it.
This was my first Henry Danger story. I got the idea after watching the show, had to get out of my head and after I finished writing, I wanted someone to read it.
This is a multi-chapter fic split into at least 4 parts. It's not going to anything special or mind blowing. Just my take on an idea.
