Chapter 4
Morgan sat in the room with Elizabeth who was now laying in her bed. Morgan's brows furrowed together in worry as she looked down at her dirty worn hands. She was still rather surprised that Elizabeth was so willing to ask her father to have her stay there at the mansion.
The maid removed a bed warmer from the fireplace, before sliding it between the sheets at the end of Elizabeth's bed.
"Nice and toasty. Thank you, Estrella." Elizabeth said with a small smile.
The maid nodded her head and left the room.
Elizabeth looked over at the young woman that sat in the room with her. "I want to thank you."
"For saving your life. I wouldn't have been soaked if I hadn't gone against my father's wishes. Besides." Morgan shifted some in the chair that she sat in. "No one deserves to drown in the water."
Elizabeth swallowed the lump in her throat nodding her head. She slowly opened the book that she had on her lap and read it slowly nibbling on her lower lip. She played with the medallion chain around her neck absentmindedly.
"That medallion… it's not safe for you to be wearing." Morgan said as she slowly got up to her feet crossing her arms a little in thought. She knew what it meant knowing her father knew exactly what it was. And it was something that she felt rather off about. Whatever it was she didn't like the feeling that it gave her.
Suddenly the lamp flame began to diminish.
Elizabeth turned a bit in her bed and tried to turn it up, but it did nothing.
Suddenly the flame went out causing the room to go black.
Morgan pursed her lips together in concern. Morgan moved towards the window and looked out it. Her brows furrowed together as she looked out through the darkness. Her eyes widened when she heard a loud explosion.
Elizabeth got up out of bed, her eyes wide. "What was that?"
"Cannon fire."
Elizabeth looked at Morgan with wide eyes. "Cannon fire?"
Morgan swallowed the lump in her throat. She knew the sounds of those cannons and which ship was now firing on Port Royal.
Elizabeth moved to where Morgan was and looked out the window to the scene that was unfolding in the town. Even through the fog, multiple fires were visible and ships burned in the harbor. Shouts and cries of pain and cannon fire would forever haunt her.
Morgan cursed softly as she saw two shadowy figures approaching the house.
Elizabeth bolted from her room.
"No." Morgan called out after Elizabeth quickly moved after her.
Elizabeth reached the railing overlooking the foyer, and cried out just as the butler opened the door and it was too late. There was a loud boom and the butler crumpled to the ground. Elizabeth ducked down in horror, peering through the balusters.
The pirates scanned the foyer searching. The leader, who was a sallow-looking pirate with a bald head, looked up, locking eyes with the young woman. "Up there!"
A woman pirate rushed for the stairs with her group. Her blonde hair mostly underneath a dirty bandana. The woman stopped when she saw someone slipping into a room keeping themselves hidden, but she didn't think a second about who went to hide in that room. They were more focused on finding the girl and that was what they were going to do. The woman narrowed her eyes. "The door is locked." The woman said sharply.
"Well come on now break the door down Bonnie." Another pirate snarled.
Bonnie let out a soft breath shaking her head lightly and then rammed her small frame against the door. "Oy I'll need more than just meself." Bonnie said snarling at her crew that was with her.
One of the men began slamming his body against the door with Bonnie trying to break the lock on the door.
Bonnie slammed her body with another pirate against the door and it gave a little bit. "One more time." Bonnie ordered the man that was with her. They rammed their bodies on more time against the door and gave in smashing forward and it slammed into the wardrobe. Bonnie ran in with her group and noticed the side door was open and they ran for it.
Pintel went into the room first and got a pan of the bed warmer to the face for his trouble of chasing after a girl. He staggered back holding his nose in anger.
Estrella slowly moved out of her hiding place and ran for the hall unnoticed. Estrella gasped when she noticed Morgan coming out of a room. She moved quickly to Morgan and grasped the young woman's hand and they made their way for the stairs.
Elizabeth swung the bed warmer at the second male pirate, but he caught it by the handle. Elizabeth couldn't jerk it free so she wrenched it over, causing the pan lid to swing down banging the second pirate, hot coals spilling onto his head sizzling causing him to scream. Elizabeth dashed for the hallway stairs.
The pirates burst from the bedroom, Pintal going for the stairs with Bonnie and the second male pirate vaulted over the handrail.
Morgan ran with Estrella who registered the butler's dead body, but continued out the very open front door in a dead run.
Elizabeth went to follow the two women, but the second pirate landed between Elizabeth and the front door. His face was burned, his hair smoldering reaching out for her. Elizabeth stopped short and ran the other way.
Pintel, who was still on the stairs, grabbed her by the hair.
Elizabeth didn't slow down, spinning and grabbed Pinetl's arm with both hands and pulled him hard, belly-first into the cap of the newel post causing him to let go of her hair and she ran off.
Bonnie rolled her eyes in frustration and she moved down the stairs with frustration clear on her face. Bonnie got to the door that Elizabeth had gotten to and rammed her body against it feeling that it was locked.
Another pirate joined her slamming his body against it.
Another pirate with an ax came up and slammed it against the door breaching the door and continued to slam against it breaking the door down.
Bonnie came through the door with a scowl on her face. She was on a mission and it was going to be the last thing that she did. She wanted some normalcy to live again and not the one that she lived. She wanted to find her daughter and husband if they were still alive and she held onto that hope.
The pirates began to search the room, under the table and behind draperies.
"We know you're here, poppet. Come out and we promise we won't hurt you." Pintel called out.
Bonnie rolled her eyes seeing that Reggti was giving him a look in wanting to hurt the girl who had burned him.
"We will find you, poppet ... You've got something of ours, and it calls to us! The gold calls to us!" Pintel said as he moved towards the dumbwaiter. He slid the door open peering down through seeing Elizabeth. "Hello, poppet."
Elizabeth worked the ropes to lower the box, but Pintel pulled the other way and he was much stronger, causing the box to rise. Elizabeth tried to stop it, wrapping her left forearm through the rope and let it jam against the top of the box. Elizabeth gasped in pain, but the box stopped. She began sawing at the rope with the bread knife.
Reggti went to help Pintel and pulled on the rope causing it to crush Elizabeth's arm.
Elizabeth tried to not cry out in pain as she continued to see at the rope. The dumbwaiter plummeted when the rope snapped.
Bonnie let out a groan of frustration and ran past the men rushing towards the kitchen. "Idiots." She grumbled as she moved quickly. She made it in time to the kitchen to see Elizabeth coming out of the dumbwaiter, her head was cut and she was streaked with dirt leaning over a table trying to recover.
Elizabeth backed away holding the bread knife to ward them off.
Bonnie rolled her eyes thinking of how crazy the young woman was and how much trouble she was causing for them.
"Par... Parlay!" Elizabeth stuttered out.
Pintel couldn't believe what he was hearing. "What?"
"Parlay! I invoke the right of parlay! According to the Code of the Brethren, set down by the pirates Morgan and Bartholomew, you must take me to your Captain!"
Bonnie rolled her eyes in frustration.
"I know the code." Pintel snarled out.
"If an adversary demands parlay, you can do them no harm until the parlay is complete."
"It would appear, so do you."
"To blazes with the code!" Reggti said, moving towards Elizabeth.
Bonnie curled her lip in anger as she jerked Reggti back. "She wants to be taken to the Captain, and she'll go without a fuss." Bonnie looked at the young woman.
Elizabeth nodded her head.
"We must honor the code."
Reggeti conceded the point and sheathed his dirk. He moved and grabbed Elizabeth roughly by the arm.
Bonnie rolled her eyes. "I'll see you two back at the ship." Bonnie said turning her heels leaving the two men dumb founded.
