Chapter 9
The Interceptor cut across the waves. Jack was at the wheel, Will tightened a line and moved back astern, and Morgan was looking out into the open sea with her lower lip between her teeth worrying as her brows furrowed.
Jack looked over at his daughter with a worried gaze. He wondered if she had seen Bonnie wandering around Port Royal. He could only hope that it wasn't the case.
Will took a breath as he picked up his sword and began to sharpen it with a whetstone.
"For a man who made an industry of avoiding boats, you're a quick study." Jack said as he looked at Will.
Morgan looked over with her brows furrowed.
"I worked passage from England as a cabin boy. After my mother passed, I came out here ... looking for my father."
"Is that so?"
"My father. William Turner?"
Jack doesn't say anything.
Will lost his temper with Jack. "I'm not a simpleton. At the jail it was only after you learned my name that you agreed to help me." He smiled a small smile. "Since that's what I wanted, I didn't press the matter. But now- You knew my father."
Jack considered his reply for a moment and decided to tell the truth. "I knew him. Probably one of the few he knew him as William Turner. Most everyone just called him Bill, or 'Bootstrap' Bill."
"'Bootstrap?'"
"Good man. Good pirate. And clever I never met anyone with as clever a mind and hands as him. When you were puzzling out that cell door, it was like seeing his twin."
"Aye." Morgan said softly, nodding her head remembering Bill. He used to chase her around on the decks when she was a young child.
"That's not true."
"I swear, you look just like him."
"It's not true my father was a pirate."
Morgan rolled her eyes a little, crossing her arms as she looked at Will. "Figured he wouldn't want to hear it."
"He was a merchant marine! He was a respectable man who obeyed the law, and followed the rules-"
Jack let out a laugh. "You think your father is the only man who ever lived the Glasgow life, telling folk one thing, and then going off to do another? There's quite a few who come here, hoping to amass enough swag to ease the burdens of respectable life. And they're all 'merchant marines.'"
"My father did not think of my mother - his family - as a burden."
"Sure - because he could always go pirating."
"My father - was not - a pirate!" Will's sword was out, leveled at Jack.
Jack gave him a disbelieving look and sighed. "Put it away, Will. It's not worth getting beat again."
"You didn't beat me. You ignored the rule of engagement. In a fair fight, I'd kill you."
"Then that's not much incentive for me to fight fair, is it?" Jack questioned before kicking a lever on a wench.
Morgan ducked as the sail boom whipped around and slammed into Will's chest, sweeping him off of the ship. Morgan grabbed Will's sword tightly in her hand after it clattered onto the deck.
Will dangled above the water trying to keep himself on the sail boom.
Jack slipped a loop of rope around the wheel to hold the course they were going.
Morgan poked at Will with his sword.
"As long as you're just hanging there, pay attention. Must, should, do, don't, shall, shall not - those are just mere suggestions. There are only two absolute rules. What a man can do. And what a man can't do."
Will looked away rather irritated.
"For instance: you can accept that your father was a pirate and still a good man ... or you can't. Now me, I can sail this ship to Tortuga, by myself … with my daughter…"
Will looked over to the two pirates rather alarmed.
"But I can't just let you drown." Jack said, swinging the boom back in.
Will dropped to the deck with a thud.
Morgan moved the sword and held the hilt out to Will.
Will carefully took the sword from Morgan. He glared at Jack considering what he would do next.
Jack watched him with a cool look upon his face.
Morgan huffed some, crossing her arms slightly.
Will turned and strided to his spot he was before sitting down and resumed sharpening his sword.
Jack breathed a deep breath a sigh of relief. His hands shook slightly and turned to take the wheel.
Morgan looked over at her father slightly concerned. She knew that this probably wasn't all that easy for him with what was going on.
"Tortuga?" Will questioned looking up after thinking.
"Oh - did I forget to mention that?"
Morgan let out a soft laugh. "We need to do this one thing before going after the Pearl." Morgan said as she looked over at Will.
Will swallowed the lump in his throat rather concerned wondering why they needed to go to Tortuga.
