Chapter 12
On the docks, a disheveled, motley and weather-beaten group of about a dozen swabs stood in a ragged line up.
Morgan crossed her arms as she looked at the ragged line up.
"Feast your eyes, Cap'n. All of 'em good sea-faring men, faithful hands before the mast, every one worth their salt and crazy, to boot." Gibbs said, looking over at Jack.
Jack held up his hand telling Gibbs enough. He moved down the line, Gibbs at his side. Then he noticed AnaMaria in line dressed as a man. He raised his brow.
"You owe me a boat." AnaMaria stated as she looked at Jack with narrowed eyes.
Morgan let out a soft laugh. "She has a point father."
Jack nodded his head before continuing.
One sailor was quite fat, another thin and sickly.
Jack wasn't happy with his choices that Gibbs had brought up for the crew. He stopped in front of Cotton, a short sailor with a large colorful parrot on his shoulder. Jack raised his brow.
"Cotton here is mute, sir. Poor devil had his tongue cut out -"
Cotton opened his mouth to show Jack.
Jack grimaces.
"So he went and trained the parrot to do the talking for him, nobody knows how. Nobody knows the parrot's name, neither, so we just call it 'Cotton's parrot.'"
Jack decided to test this idea. "Mr. Cotton. Do you have the courage and fortitude to follow orders and stay true, in the face of danger, and almost certain death?"
Cotton lifted the parrot off his shoulder, raising it.
"Wind in your SAILS! Wind in your SAILS!" The parrot said.
"Mostly, that seem to mean 'yes.'" Gibbs said, looking over at Jack.
Cotton nodded vigorously, lowering the parrot and it went silent.
Jack shook his head, stepping back. "That goes for the rest of you! Danger and near certain death." He turned away from the group. "For we are to sail for the Isla de Muerta, to rescue the daughter of Governor Swann. An equal share of the reward shall be-" Jack heard movement and looked back seeing that several potential crew members backed away in fright.
Soon just a half dozen were left including Cotton and AnaMaria.
"Shut up, before you lose them all!" Will snapped at Jack.
"These are the only ones worth having." He glanced up at the sky. "And we're going to need them -"
"My father has a point." Morgan said, looking at Will with an irritated look upon her face. She didn't like the idea that Will was thinking the worst of her father. She knew that her father had done what he had done for a reason. He didn't need people trying to jump off of ship when they got to the dangerous land that Barbossa had taken the Pearl to.
PIRATES
A flash of lightning and the crack of thunder rained down upon the H.M.S. Interceptor. The canvas of every sail was stretched taut. The ship rocked as it dropped into the valley of a huge swell, climbing up the other side.
On board, the new crew members scurried about with their tasks, pulling lines and trimming sails. Excellent sailors, it takes everything that they have to keep the ship afloat.
AnaMaria was at the helm with Morgan who was helping where she could with AnaMaria.
Gibbs staggered along the deck. "That fool will have us lose the canvas, and the masts besides!"
The wind blew Jack's hair back, his eyes intent on their course.
Gibbs climbed up the tilted deck towards Jack. "We'd best drop canvas, sir!"
"She can hold a bit longer."
The wind picked up howling as it blew.
Jack smiled.
"What's in your head to put you in such a fine mood?"
"We're catching up!" Jack turned back to the sea, enjoying himself.
Gibbs stared at him like he had gone insane.
"It's a good sign Gibbs!" Morgan yelled over the howling wind. Her heart raced wondering what the state of the Pearl would be in. Would her mother be there on the ship caught up in the mutiny with Barbossa? She could only hope that it wasn't the case.
