Chapter 15
The pirates reached the end of a small chamber of mostly jewels and pearls piled around a large bed and then emerged into the largest cavern of all, also crammed full of treasure, including several mountains of gold coins that reached the ceiling. Treasure strewn about everywhere except for one spot in the center. A hole in the ceiling let in a column of moonlight which illuminates a stone chest, lid pushed back, decorated with carved Aztec glyphs, filled with gold coins that were identical to the medallion. A sharp knife sat on top of all the gold.
In front of it, buried in the sand was a skeleton and this one didn't look like it was ever going to move ever again, judging by the sword in its back.
A crab scurried away from it as the group approached.
Bonnie pursed her lips as a shiver went through her body as she looked at the stone chest. She swallowed the lump in her throat knowing that this was the last step before everyone could return to normal.
"Here we stand before the cursed treasure of Cortez himself. Won by blood, it demands blood in return." Barbossa said looking at the treasure chest with distaste in his eyes.
All eyes turned onto Elizabeth.
Pintel took the stone knife from the chest and approached her.
Elizabeth shrinks back, but is held by two other pirates.
Pintel grinned, grabbing her by the wrist and she turned her head away, shutting her eyes. Pintel raised the knife and then very carefully, daintily, used the sharp tip of the knife to prick Elizabeth's finger.
One tiny red drop of blood appeared, and dripped down onto the medallion.
Elizabeth slowly opened her eyes rather surprised.
"What did you expect? We're all gentlemen here, right and proper."
The pirates laughed except for Bonnie who looked away.
Barbossa took the medallion and grinned at Elizabeth. "You know the first thing I'm going to do after the curse is lifted? Eat a whole bushel of apples." Barbossa approached the chest, shining in the beam of moonlight. "What was begun by blood, let blood now end!" He tossed the gold medallion onto the others.
The pirates all tensed up waiting, expectant. A very long beat and they all looked at each other and then looked at themselves. Nothing had happened.
"Did it work?" Kolher questioned softly.
"I don't feel no different."
"How can we tell?" Jacoby questioned his brows furrowed together in worry.
Bonnie pinched the bridge of her nose knowing that it was probably the dumbest thing that could have ever been asked.
Barbossa frowned, drawing his pistol and shooting the pirate next to him, which was Jacoby square in the chest.
Jacoby reacted in shock, grabbing his chest, but he didn't die.
"You're not dead." Kohler said in shock.
"No." Jacoby said rather surprised but then realized what had happened. "He shot me!"
"It didn't work! The curse is still upon us!" Twigg shouted in anger.
Barbossa searched his mind for an answer but came up with none before turning to Elizabeth sharply. "You. Maid. Your father. What was his name?!" He grabbed her shoulders roughly. "Was your father William Turner?!"
Elizabeth took time to smile before replying. "No."
Bonnie looked at the young woman with anger on her face. She couldn't believe that this was what it was coming down to.
The pirates cried out in alarm around her.
Barbossa tried to gather himself, getting his rage under steely control. "Where's his child? The child that sailed from England eight years ago, the child who is the real owner of that medallion, the child in whose veins flows the blood of William Turner?! Where?" Barbossa slapped her hard across her face, sending her sprawling to the ground hard.
Bonnie took a breath through her nose knowing that there was probably now no way that they would be able to break the curse.
"You brought us the wrong person!" Jacoby said in anger.
"She had the medallion! She's the right age. She said her name was Turner!" Pintel said, trying to plead his case.
"You brought us here for nothing?" Twigg said in anger.
Barbossa whirled around on Twigg. "If you have sailed with Morgan for ten years like I have, you'd know not to question me!"
Bonnie let out a breath shaking her head lightly as everyone began to argue about everything.
"If any coward here dare challenge me, let him speak! Any more talk, I'll chain ye to a cannon and send ye to the watery depths!" Suddenly a sound caught his attention of coins falling. He looked up seeing Will and Elizabeth on top of the treasure stack.
Bonnie let out a frustrated breath. "I'm going after her. Perhaps there is an answer to what is going on."
Barbossa looked at Bonnie and nodded his head firmly.
Bonnie turned sharply on her heels and began to run, her long blond hair bouncing as she ran. She could hear the footsteps of others following her lead. Bonnie narrowed her eyes as she saw Elizabeth kiss Jack quickly before running away from the group.
Jack slowly turned to face the pirates that all had gotten there. He stuck the two swords he had in the ground, crossed leaning casually against a rock. He noticed his wife and the other pirates joining her. He could see the angry look in his wife's eyes to know that she had seen something that didn't please her. Jack raised his hand. "I invoke the right of parlay, according to the Code of the Brethren, set down by the pirates Morgan and Bartholomew…"
Bonnie moved and grabbed his arm tightly in her hand and dragged him to where Barbossa was. Bonnie shoved Jack to the ground once they had gotten to Barbossa.
Jack smiled widely looking up at Barbossa.
"I'm inclined to kill you now, Jack Sparrow, without so much as a word, if you don't lose that grin from your face."
Jack's smile didn't go away.
Barbossa put his hand on his cutlass.
"The woman's blood didn't work, did it?"
Barbossa hesitated.
"I know whose blood you need, to end the curse."
"Say the name, or I slit your throat."
"No you won't."
Barbossa nodded his head.
Pintel stepped forward and put his blad to Jack's throat.
Jack's smile only widened.
"Now?" Pintel questioned.
Barbossa nodded his head. "Now."
Pintel grinned.
"No, don't kill him."
Surprised, Pintel lowered his cutlass.
Jack's expression never changed.
Bonnie let out a breath knowing that her husband was rather crazy or just plain stupid.
"Allow me the humor of listening to your terms."
"Simple. I have something you won't more than anything. The way to free you from the curse of the treasure. You have something I want - more than anything."
"The Pearl?" Barbossa laughed. "Oh, that's fine. And just how do you expect this to work?"
"You give me the Pearl. Then I tell you who you need."
Barbossa stared at him, incredulous. "That's your offer? You, sailing away nice and pretty with the Black Pearl, and all I have is a name?"
"That's right." Jack said with a nod of his head.
"I'm supposed to ... trust you?"
The pirates laughed.
"I'm a man of my word."
The pirates around him laughed even louder.
"You see, I've got this honest streak in me - in its own way, a sort of curse. Oh, and there's the fact that you have no choice."
"I'll torture it out of you."
"You left me on a desert island with my daughter. What worse can you do?" Jack said, still smiling, intentionally smug now.
Barbossa saw his options dwindling and began to pace back and forth rather irritated. "Blast you! I'll throw you in prison."
"Wait as long as you like."
"You're setting me up for a double cross, you with the ship, and me with nothing more than your word!"
"Let's say I tell you the wrong person. What would you do?"
"Track you down and -" He saw where Jack was headed with her anser.
"And if I tell you the truth, you become, and you won't come near me because you know I'd kill you."
Barbossa hesitated.
The pirates were amazed at how the tide had turned. Barbossa had gone past considering the idea, and might even do it.
"Jack, I don't trust you, and that's a fact. Never trust a smiling man, you can lie to that."
"See, that's where we're different. I trust you ... to do what it takes to get what you want."
"You're playing this as close to the edge as any man, I'll give you that." He then decided and then smiled. "We might just have to sign articles, you and I. Jack, you're a pirate at heart, that's certain."
Jack nodded his head.
"Pintel ... set sail. If this fool plan is to work, we'll need the medallion, and that means catching the ship which brought 'em here."
Jack was completely caught off guard. For the first time, his smile faded. "What - you don't have the medallion?"
"That fool woman took it. You be careful around her, Jack - she's pretty enough, she'll steal your heart - but pure evil inside."
Bonnie's hands tightened at her sides.
"I'll watch my back."
"Bosun! Set up Mr. Sparrow's quarters, nice and fine ... in the brig." He then smiled before wrapping his arm slightly around Bonnie. "Meaning no disrespect, of course."
Jack swallowed the lump in his throat before nodding his head as he was taken away.
Barbossa stared after him, not hiding the distrust on his face.
Bonnie moved away from Barbossa slapping his hand away. "Ye just couldn't help it could ye?" She snarled at Barbossa. "I'm not yers. Nor will I ever be." She stormed away heading towards where Jack was being taken.
