Chapter 17

The Black Pearl laid at anchor, closer to the islet now.

Jack's wrists were still bound, standing in the classic walking plank pose. Elizabeth was next in line followed by Morgan.

The pirates crowded around the ship's rail to watch.

"It's pure evil to make a Captain walk the plank of his own ship, twice in one lifetime. No good can come of it." Jack said, rather frustrated.

"Now, Jack. That reef is less than a league distance away. It's a square deal all around, and you can't hope for better." Barbossa said, looking at them.

"Someone needs to cut these bonds, then." Jack said, moving his arms up to show his tied arms.

Barbossa smiled, showing a pistol. He pointed it at Jack. "You'd best take a swim, Jack."

"The last time you did this, you left me a pistol, with one shot." Jack said, trying to cut off what Barbossa was trying to do. He really wanted his gun back.

The pirates muttered in agreement.

"That's proper, sir, according to the code." Pintel said, remembering the code.

"By the powers, you're right!" Barbossa turned around. "Where's Jack's pistol? Who's got it? Bring it forward!"

"A gentleman might give us three pistols, seeing as there are three of us, this time."

A pirate handed Jack's pistol to Barbossa.

"Tell you what. I'll give you one pistol, and let you be the gentleman, and shoot the lady, and starve to death yourself! And your daughter." He spat before grinning. "That is, presuming you're not drowned."

The pirates laughed.

Barbossa tossed Jack the pistol, but it went over his head and down into the water with a splash. "So how did you get off that island, anyway?"

"You can go to your grave not knowing."

"That's fair."

Jack glared at Barbossa. Then he was prodded with a cutlass. He took a step out before reaching the end of the plank and stepped right off. Jack plunged down into the water and appeared on the surface floundering, struggling to stay afloat.

Will and Elizabeth exchanged helpless looks with one another. There was nothing that they could do.

"The lady's next. But first, I'll be wanting that dress back, if you please." Barbossa said to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth hesitated and then stripped off her dress leaving her in a silk slip. She threw it at him. "Here - it will go well with your blackheart!"

Barbossa then indicated to the plank.

"I will not walk into the ocean. You'll have to throw me in!"

Morgan let out a breath knowing that probably wasn't the right thing to say.

Barbossa raised an eyebrow before grinning and nodding. "Have at her, lads!"

The pirates rushed to comply with what he had said. They lifted her up and tossed her over the rail.

She fell into the water with a loud scream.

"Now the bastard child." Barbossa said, looking at Morgan with pure hatred in his eyes.

Morgan swallowed the lump in her throat as easily walked across the plank and just walked right off the end of it splashing into the water. Morgan saw both Elizabeth who was swimming down to her father who was untying his bonds.

Morgan swam up coughing out water from her mouth. She pushed her brown hair back looking up at the Pearl with irritation on her face.

Elizabeth swam up to the surface, breaking through it breathing deeply. She looked around nervously.

Jack appeared up at the surface before sucking in a deep breath of air. He showed the girls what he went after, his pistol. He tucked it into his shirt.

"You went back for that? We need to head for the reef!" Elizabeth said, swimming towards the shore.

Jack and Morgan hesitated.

The Black Pearl was already underway.

Jack stared at the pearl as it went away into the horizon. "That's the second time I've had to watch that man sail away with my ship and wife."

Morgan shook her head and swam towards shore.

Jack swam after the two of the women.
