Alright guys, this gap was crazy long but I've finally updated. A lot of shit went on for me in the 2 or 3 years of my hiatus and almost all of it wasn't good. BUT, I thank you for waiting. This story is almost to a close, I can very much feel it. Also, it gets kind of gory(?) in this chapter so be mindful. I love you all! And Enjoy!
Last time: And the Tardis lurched forward, speeding as fast as the machine could toward their beautiful Bad Wolf.
How long had she been there? Minutes, hours, days? All of time seemed to seep together as the drugs they injected her with flowed through her veins. She pleaded to herself to move but her body stayed stagnant. Silent tears ran down her cheeks as Tamul cleaned off the newest blood from his knife. Every time a new slice appeared, golden light flooded from her pores to heal it and as soon as it left, it was being absorbed by the white metal only giving her essence enough time to heal the slice into a pink scar. Tamul indeed made good on his promise to hurt her as he had sliced up her stomach so bad that it felt like it was raw ground beef. Her shirt was in rags and every breath to Rose felt like she was swallowing glass. She whimpered to herself as Tamul approached. She shut her eyes tight and once again pleaded to the heavens that Koschei and the Doctor would get here faster.
The Tardis had parked somewhere. Neither were sure exactly where but the sound of metal grinding against metal made it clear that they had landed somewhere. Koschei and the Doctor looked at each other and then turned to the door. There as a second of silence and then the both of them scrambled towards the doors.
They burst out of the Tardis with desperate pleas that they would be met with the sight of Rose but their pleas were in vain. They had ran out into an empty room with one exit door. The Doctor pulled out his sonic to scan the area but it produced nothing. "They're cloaking Rose. This is as close as the Tardis could get us."
"Let's go." Koschei said with some determination as he walked towards the door. The sooner they could find Rose, the faster they could destroy this place. The Doctor and Koschei walked forward with reckless abandon and threw open the door, both hoping that they weren't met with the sight of guards. Luckily, the hallway they walked out to was empty and no one could be seen coming from either side.
Koschei could practically feel the anger coursing off of the Doctors being. Koschei himself was as angry as the Doctor but fear overshadowed it. The people here had almost made Rose break and that was with the primitive technology before. He couldn't imagine how advanced they were now.
Something occurred to Koschei then. "Doctor." He said as he lifted his arm and saw the hairs standing on end. "Do you feel that in the air?" He asked as he felt his skin start to prickle. He really hoped the Doctor said no.
However the Doctor nodded and Koschei's stomach dropped. "Something's expelling massive amounts of Timelord energy." He said looking left and right. "This way." He said, walking left. Koschei followed close behind with worry overwhelming his entire being. If Timelord energy was being expelled then that could only mean they had gotten to Rose already. The amount in the air meant that whatever they were doing to her was bad… really bad.
How much more could she take? How much more do they think she could take? Her fingers had been broken and unbroken and broken again and every time energy flowed to heal it and every time it would get sucked away just as quick. Rose wanted to die. Anything was better than this. If she just died then everything would be okay.
Koschei wasn't here. The Doctor wasn't either. It had already been so long… How long? Too long. They hadn't found her. Or worse they had stopped looking. Or worse than that, they hadn't even started looking. The Doctor left her twice and Koschei did once so it wasn't an impossibility. They weren't coming. She was going to be here… forever.
The hallway led them down to a sort of automatic control room. After scanning the control panel with his sonic, fear filled the Doctor's face, "This machine is harnessing some sort of strong power." He said ambiguously not wanting to admit what they were both terrified to think about.
Koschei's face turned white as a sheet. The Doctor's words sent ice through his veins and he confirmed the awful truth. "They got her."
A scream of anguish left the Doctor's lips as he slammed a fist against the metal board filled with buttons and levers. He whirled around the room, "WHERE IS SHE?!" He screamed looking all around.
Koschei tried to place a hand on his shoulder to calm him down but the Doctor swiped it off, "If I can't find Rose, then I'm going to find the bastards who took her," The Doctor growled in a voice that made Koschei's blood run cold, he turned and screamed, "I'M GOING TO MAKE THEM PAY!"
The sound of running feet filled the room and the Doctor turned to face the hallway with murder in his eyes, "There's a reason I'm called the Oncoming Storm, boys." He whispered under his breath.
Koschei braced himself for a fight, fear flooding through body, "Doctor we're not going to win this." He murmured.
The Doctor shook his head, "We just need to get to Rose." He said back. He clenched his fists as the stomping of feet grew louder, "And if I take a few with me, then I take a few with me." He steeled himself for the soldiers.
Workers stormed the room armed with nothing but their fists. They all wore matching grey uniforms with a gold insignia over the heart. The Doctor and Koschei started swinging. Fueled by blind rage, crippling guilt, and overwhelming worry Koschei and the Doctor managed to beat down six of the ten soldiers that had rushed the room. They lay on the floor and in that moment the Doctor hoped they had stopped breathing. Koschei wondered to himself if the Doctor had lost his own self as well as Rose. The workers, though unarmed, were anything but weak and when the two time lords were forced to the ground they weren't surprised. However that didn't stop the Doctor from thrashing and trying to escape while yelling murder.
Koschei was somewhere else in that moment. Yes, he was pressed to the cold metallic floor alongside the Doctor, being pushed down by the weight of the cult fetishists but his mind was elsewhere. The screaming of the Doctor was far away and replaced with the memory of the Professor yelling in pain. He could feel his body shaking, his throat closing, he had tried, he had tried so hard. He didn't remember his eyes shutting but he saw only blackness mixed with the memory of Rose being cut into and tortured. He felt tears. He couldn't breath.
A bigger man stepped into the room and the Doctor paused in his struggle to glare up at him. Koschei's eyes snapped open at the sound of his footsteps. The color leached from his face as he craned his neck to see, "Tamul…" He whispered, his lips almost un-moving.
Koschei couldn't handle this. Without Rose, he wasn't as strong. He'd had so little time to be himself, he couldn't deal being in a situation like this without her giving him hope. He knew he had the Doctor with him but looking at him now, with murder clear in his eyes while not even trying to look composed, he wondered if the Doctor was really with him at all or if the Doctor was even with himself.
The man smiled looking down at Koschei with malice, "Ahh, our plaything returned." His eyes turned to the Doctor, the smile leaving his face, "Along with a rat."
"I am going to be the one to kill you." The Doctor growled.
Tamul only laughed.
The Doctor screamed in anger as the workers hauled him and Koschei to their feet. "I will crush you to dust." The Doctor growled as he lunged for Tamul. The workers held him in place.
Tamul's black eyes stared into the Doctors. "A mere ant can do nothing to harm a god."
"You are not a god." The Doctor said coldly, meeting Tamul's gaze with an icy stare. "You're nothing but a useless slug with a meager excuse for existence." The Doctor spat at him.
Tamul laughed again and the sound made Koschei's skin crawl. He could feel himself shaking. A guard came forward and, with a fast lunge, punched the Doctor out cold. Koschei begged in his mind that Rose knew they were here. He hoped she knew she wasn't alone. A fist came forward and Koschei was pushed into a painful darkness.
Alone. Only darkness. She hadn't opened her eyes for awhile. The reds and blues and yellows swirling behind her eyelids were a comfort to her and she knew if she saw the empty white-hazed glass surrounding her she'd burst into tears and she wasn't going to give the people watching the satisfaction. She just wanted to die. Or pass out. But the constant electric pain coursing through her kept her from any release.
She screamed. Again. It did no good. No one responded and she knew no one would. Tamul hadn't been back for awhile. Her sense of time was skewed yes but she knew she hadn't seen him for longer than usual. For a second, hope flared up inside of her. Maybe there was a problem. Maybe Koschei and the Doctor had finally come and they were fighting there way through soldiers to get to her. Or maybe they had been captured and were enduring the same hell she was or worse. Maybe this was even a trick and they weren't even here at all.
A tear escaped her clenched eyes and a broken sob fought its way out of her mouth as she thought about the chances.
Hissss…
The door was opening. Rose's eyes shot open as she turned to try to look through the white, hazy glass. It was Tamul. And trailing behind him were four guards, each holding a sagging body. The pain within her had dulled, her tears were forgotten, her breath caught in her throat and the whole world seemed to slow. Before she knew it, they were inside the dome with her, and her fears were confirmed. Koschei and the Doctor were being held up by the guards and Tamul was looking at her with a smile that could only be described as smug.
"What did you do to them?" She asked, her voice sounding hoarse. She was surprised by how it didn't waver.
Tamul waved his hands at the guards. They threw the two bodies down and Rose held her breath as she thought about the unthinkable.
The Doctor groaned when he hit the floor and she exhaled with a sigh of relief. Koschei fell flat and then rolled himself on his back. His breathing was labored while the Doctor was barely starting to regain his bearings. Tamul waved his hand again and the four guards turned and left them. Tamul pulled out a device that looked a lot like a fancy cattle prod. Rose was too familiar with it.
"No, don't do it." Rose tried to yell but it came out as soft shout.
Tamul inched the prod toward Koschei and Rose struggled in her chair to go forward. The prod went over him and landed over the Doctor, who still hadn't fully regained consciousness.
Rose locked eyes with him, "Don't." There was warning in her voice.
The prod clicked on and hit home. There was a piercing yell from the Doctor as a pain he had never felt before erupted from his chest. He convulsed on the ground, his eyes rolling back while his breathing staggered.
"NO!" Rose screamed, pulling against her bonds as her eyes flared with a golden light. It flooded out of her and tried to break her free of the chair, but it was only able to chip at the edges before being sucked away. She screamed in frustration. Tamul fixed his eyes on her with a manic smile.
Rose's yell brought Koschei out of his reverie. He remembered where he was and with that, he remembered who they were supposed to be saving. Before he realized exactly what he was doing, he lunged for Tamul's legs and yanked as hard as he could. Tamul staggered backward and Koschei took the time to get to his knees and shove him hard. Taken by surprise, Tamul fell back and braced himself against the curved wall. The prod dropped and Koschei grabbed for it. A kick connected with Koschei's mouth as Tamul saw what he was trying to do. The pain that exploded in his jaw made Koschei cry out. He moved to cover his mouth. Tamul took the chance to throw himself at Koschei, his hands wrapping around Koschei's windpipe.
Rose screamed again, "Don't!" Her body pulsed with the golden light once again but none of it was enough to free her and none stayed long enough for her to use it as a weapon.
Tamul glared up at her as he pressed harder. Koschei tried to kick and hit but the block in his airway was making him weak. The gurgling sounds he was making made tears sprout in Rose's eyes.
She was going to watch her friend die.
"Don't kill him!" She screamed as loud as she could.
Dots were going in Koschei's vision, his eyes were rolling.
Tamul suddenly laughed. He let go. Koschei gasped in air and retched. His body was shaking again. He tried to summon any will to fight but he was so dizzy. He couldn't see.
"Would you rather I try this one?" He growled, turning to the Doctor.
Rose tensed, "Don't you dare." She growled, her fury returning to her.
The Doctor had since gone limp. His eyes were open and looking but the shock from the cattle prod had semi-paralyzed him. Tamul wrapped his hands around his neck and squeezed. The Doctor tried to bring a hand to stop him, but it only lifted and then flopped back down. Rose could hear his breathing thinning and his lungs trying to get more breath and failing.
Her breathing was coming quick now, she couldn't believe this. She was strapped down watching the love of her long life dying. She was so angry, so sad, and so regretful. He was here. The Doctor was right here in this nightmare with her and he wasn't supposed to be.
Two of the most important people she knew were being hurt and she was right there watching.
Tamul locked eyes with her, "A god's power was not meant for you. You're weak. You're nothing. Just like these two, you will die and turn to dust. I will live forever."His eyes gleamed and Rose saw his hands tighten. The Doctor's eyes started to close. "I was meant to be a god." He started to laugh. "My legacy will be eternal." He turned to look down at Koschei and the Doctor, "And these two will be the first sacrifices to my eternal grace."
Rose went cold inside. She no longer felt sad. She refused to let her existence be snuffed out by someone like him. She had lived longer than most and this was not the end. She let out a breath, swirls of gold came out with it. She screamed.
She pushed out everything she could. The dust of the golden power she held filled the dome and, as some was sucked away she pushed more. It was thick in the air and Tamul's grip on the Doctor's neck wavered as he saw it. His mouth fell open in awe.
She shoved her power down his throat. She felt it in his lungs and squeezed. He stumbled back on his knees and tried to gasp but all that came out was a croak. She screamed again, pushing more into him until she couldn't even hear him choking. The Doctor struggled to breath in air, his hands twitching by his sides. Rose glanced at him long enough to see that he had passed out but she quickly turned away again. She tried to push some of her energy on Koschei but it only gave him so much.
All of her focus was on Tamul.
Luckily, she had pushed just enough to restore him. Koschei knew Rose was about to blow up again, but this time he wasn't sure if he was going to stop her. He hauled himself to his feet and grabbed the cattle prod. He saw Rose focusing hard on Tamul, and he saw Tamul scratching at his throat. His face had turned a different shade and Koschei could see his chest constricting on itself.
He turned to Rose again. She didn't look herself at all; not like any of the selves she had so carefully crafted over the years he knew her. Her teeth were bared and the sound coming through was a half-grunt, half-growl. Koschei's heart pulled with a sadness and he knew what he had to do. He walked forward and stunned Tamul with the prod. His body convulsed heavily and fell to the side, his lips had turned a shade of green.
Koschei quickly blocked Rose's view of Tamul and knelt so they were face to face. "Rose. You need to stop." He said, hurriedly, knowing Tamul didn't have much time left.
"NO!" She growled, glancing at him for a split second before trying to stretch to focus her eyes on Tamul.
He grabbed her head firmly and made her look at him, "Rose! This is not who you are!" He yelled, trying to get her to focus on him instead of Tamul.
She yelled back, "He was going to kill you and the Doctor!" Her eyes bored into Koschei's. "He doesn't deserve to live." She said with an icy glare. She tried to turn back again, but Koschei held her.
"And who are you to decide that?!" He questioned with a sharp yell. Rose's eyes shot back to meet his. "Who are you to decide who lives and who dies?!" He yelled again trying to shake sense into her. Tears formed in her eyes, "Rose, this is not you." He half-whispered, feeling his own tears starting.
She shook her head fiercely, "You were gone a long time, Koschei." She said, her voice shaking with every word. "You don't know who I am anymore."
Koschei shook his head, "Maybe I don't." He said, sadly. Rose tried to move to look at Tamul again but Koschei's hands held strong. "What I do know," He said, staring into her bright golden eyes with an intensity, "Is that you'll regret this." He said, trying to get through to her. "You're going to regret this, Rose." He said, softly. More tears fell from her eyes and she let out a sob. Her eyes clenched shut and the gold in the air faded as it got sucked away. "We'll get you out of here, Rose." Koschei said as confidently as he could while pushing his own tears back. "Just calm down for a second." He said, backing up and walking to the now unconscious Doctor.
Koschei grabbed his sonic out of his jacket pocket. He rushed back to her and used the sonic on the chair. A high-pitched grating sound pierced the air for a few seconds before the binds on the white chair slide away with a loud click. Rose shot forward as an attempt to get out of there as fast as possible. Unfortunately, her legs were shot and so was most of her energy. Koschei caught her as she sank towards the ground, "Rose, don't pass out." He said, quickly but her eyes were already shutting. He felt her sag in his arms and he held back a curse. He laid her out on the floor and allowed himself a second to sort out his options.
With two of his friends unconscious and one of his enemies passed out along with them, his choices weren't many.
He stood over the Doctor and knelt down to shake him. "Doctor!" He yelled, keeping the cattle prod close in case Tamul decided to wake up before the Doctor did. "Doctor you need to get up!" He yelled louder while lightly slapping his face.
The Doctor's eyes twitched open the slightest bit and Koschei felt a jump of relief. He knew they needed to leave soon since it wouldn't be long before more guards showed up to check on Tamul's progress. He still was unsure of how they were going to be able to escape the compound but he figured they'd think of something.
Koschei slapped the Doctor again but with a little more force. His eyes jerked open and a small, "Wha…" came from him.
Koschei sighed. His gut was telling him they needed to leave and they didn't have any more time. He muttered a quick sorry before slapping the Doctor again with as much force as he thought necessary. A resounding smack echoed through the small chamber and the Doctor jerked up. He was sitting up now with wide eyes and harsh breaths. He looked around the room and his eyes landed on Koschei. "What happened?" He asked, his voice breathless as he tried to recall how and when and what.
Koschei shook his head as he helped the Doctor to his feet. "There's no time. I'll explain later."
The Doctor swayed on his feet and nearly fell over when he saw Rose on the ground, "Is she okay?" He asked frantically as he bolted towards her. He almost fell over again as he knelt down beside her but Koschei put a hand on his shoulder to steady him. The Doctor laid a hand on Rose's cheek. "Oh, Rose…" He whispered.
"She's exhausted. We'll have to carry her." Koschei said, already beginning to lift her. The Doctor tried to help as much as he could, but his head was still swimming. They propped her up between the two of them and headed for the way they came in. Koschei used the sonic to open the side of the dome and all three of them walked unsteadily down the way until they got to the door that led them to the outside. Koschei shoved it open and thanked some higher power that it wasn't locked. They all stumbled out and landed in an empty observation room. There were chairs scattered around with monitors that showed the dome Rose had been in from every angle. They laid her out on the floor and Koschei went to check the doors. He quickly locked them with the sonic and went back to check on Rose.
Her breathing was shallow, but she was alive. The Doctor collapsed to his knees beside her. Koschei could see tears forming in his eyes and he did best to suppress his own. They weren't in any place for all of them to start breaking down, and right now Koschei had to be the strong one. He knelt beside Rose and looked her over. She was out cold, and the Doctor didn't look much better off. Koschei had to come up with something fast before they all ran out of steam.
He knelt beside the Doctor and put a hand on his shoulder, "Doctor, we need to get her out of here fast. If she wakes up with a vengeance, I don't know if I'd be able to stop her." Koschei said, looking down at Rose.
The Doctor shook his head, "I wouldn't even try to." He said, his voice hard. Koschei wanted to argue but they didn't have time.
"Help me get her up and we'll make a run for the Tardis." Koschei said, moving to pick her up from the side.
The Doctor continued to stare at her for a moment before following Koschei's lead. Seeing Rose passed out on the ground gave him a boost of adrenaline. "We're going to get her out of here." The Doctor said with a newfound determination. He locked eyes with Koschei who nodded back to him.
They walked Rose forward, being careful not to let her feet drag. When they got to the door, Koschei unlocked it with the sonic and shoved it open, fully prepared for whatever they'd meet on the other side.
