Chapter 16: Progress
A/N: Sorry about the longer than usual delay, work is just more busy and I simply couldn't have second somedays to even write a word or two. But here's an update as we come closer to the end of this story.
Several seconds of bizarre silence followed the Queen after she uttered her last words. Perhaps it was too blunt, but it was in fact the truth. "I do not say this mildly, I do not make light of the insinuation that you will all possibly die I am stating merely as a fact because every single persons' life will be threatened if you continue along the path that you are all heading on, following that day I can not even be sure if even Naofumi will be able to keep the waves at bay without the aid of you Heroes."
Holding her fan in front of her face still she gave each Hero a very cold stare. "Do you understand what I am telling you?"
'Damnit…' It sure as hell didn't feel right to Naofumi but he owed Fitoria among many others, "Alright, let's just start exchanging information about what we know and then go from there. We can't fix all of the leaks we have on this sinking ship right here and now so let's just start with the basics."
It made the Queen smile but no one could see it, "A good thought, now which Hero would like to begin first?" Slowly, ever slowly did the barriers break down and conversations were opened up, the enlightenment of how weapons could be augmented, the use of fast travel, skills, spells and the like were shown. Of course the dialogue did sour as the point of gaining the most amount of power came up.
Itsuki argued for weapon proficiency, Ren argued for Skill, Motoyasu doubled down on abilities. Each side made a point to their case but neither did it answer any questions as Naofumi was the odd Hero out being he was not wild but carried a defensive piece of equipment… with but one exception.
"So explain this to me Naofumi," Motoyasu said, sitting back in his chair. "How did you acquire that kind of power? You called it cursed but despite whatever downsides you showed it was obviously more than capable of defeating an opponent stronger than us… so what's the secret with that?"
It was on quite a few minds in the room, it might be envy or curiosity, still sides wished to know how to acquire a level of power like that.
"You got that terrifying Mage to give you a hand with your abilities… I saw some of those similarities when we jousted back in the village." He could still visibly recall how Naofumi's body was able to change, gaining the blackness covering his body, the change in red eyes, white hair, and how overall he was just much stronger than before. They were much like how the Homunculus fought against the Pope using his terrifying abilities to drain out mana, twist and manipulate his body, plus the way the shield reflected the look of the man's skull was also a clear giveaway.
"Well," Naofumi started looking down at the shield on his arm. "I don't really know myself how it worked, it sort of came to me in bits and pieces. There were some parts that I could control, others not so much… Even now I'm not entirely sure how things came to be." Yet he held some of his own personal thoughts back. 'I don't know if it was just Elias or something else, I know that I've heard the voice of the dragon and nothing but feelings of burning rage overtaking me…' For him he knew how much power he could unleash and barely be able to control it which was another concern. 'They were all suckered in by someone else, they all happily use this power without care and I can't trust them with such a personal power if they can just turn like that upon me because someone says so.'
There wasn't anything more to really offer at the moment until later, when he was certain that he could trust them without hesitation and while it wouldn't be entirely wrong of someone to declare that he was being selfish or like they were, he had gone through great lengths of suffering because of them… if they developed the power on their own then they could use it however they wished but he wasn't going to just hand it over. Besides all of that, his own power had messed him up and couldn't risk them dying to this as well.
"Well that sorta sucks." Motoyasu stated, "Maybe the mage could give us some of that power then. If it worked so well for you."
Naofumi opened his mouth to object but the Queen interceded for him, "That suggestion will remain on hold for now, the Mage is currently working on a way to return Chise and himself back to their own world and requested to be left alone and given that Sir Ainsworth's erratic behavior could become even more strained I would kindly suggest that he be given his space to do the work as he pleases… however living arrangements will be better suited so that any evening activities will not disrupt the day to day operations of the kingdom."
All parties were privy to what that meant, Elias and Chise had been a sore spot but considering the near eight foot tall homunculus walking around he was given the freedom to do as he wished without anyone confronting him.
"So if that's off the table what comes now?" Itsuki asked, folding his fingers over one another in his lap. "I mean you've stated that we would probably die in the upcoming waves, so what exact route should we move forward with. Should we focus on grinding or something else?"
"That is a great Question Bow Hero," Mirellia said, snapping her fan back into place at her side. "As luck would have it, the waters in the area are suitable for travel and there is a rare event occurring on one of our islands, Cal Mira Archipelago that will provide quite the experience and no doubt increase the levels of you and your party members for the upcoming battle in the waves."
"What?" Itsuki spoke, but all of the Heroes reacted to the news. If it was true then this could be a big help for the lack of experience some of them were suffering.
"Indeed I shall-" The Queen's voice paused as the door to the small hall was opened and in stepped Princess Melty.
"Apologies for interrupting mother but I need your ear." She spoke bowing but her Highness beckoned her over with a motion of her fingers. The princess approached cupping her hand to block the sound and view of her lips so that it might be only her mother knowing of what she wished to speak of.
The Queen's eyes reacted slightly, looking at her daughter as if 'are you certain?' to which she nodded. Mirellia brought a hand to her forehead and could only shake her head. "My apologies Hero's but I have a personal matter that needs correcting with Bitch." Using the newly designated name given to her formerly named daughter Malty.
"Huh? What's happening." Motoyasu had accepted what had transpired at the trial but even still she was a member of his party.
"Sister was- Err I mean Bitch was caught attempting to poison food that was to be delivered to the Shield Hero's party as they were gathered in the main hall for feasting.
"No, I mean- well there must be a misunderstanding." Even still he tried to defend her, not as zealous as before but still he had to believe that Myne would change.
But the Matriarch of the country did not share the same belief. "If you wish to doubt the words given to me, perhaps the slave crest could be used again to proove innocent or not if you would wish?" Her offer is a harsh one considering the amount of visible pain that everyone viewed once being confronted with the truth of the second princess's deceit and malice.
Motoaysu merely let his head fall, "No, no that's not necessary." Perhaps conceding that it would probably be true.
As the meeting wound down to a close and the feast that was being thrown turned more into a brawl with Raphtalia and Filo challenging any who would speak out against the Shield Hero and Chise. Given the climate of events that transpired one might believe the mood would've been more subdued but with enough alcohol creating liquid courage the entire gathering descended into a messy fight with minimal injury…
Naofumi carried his Tanuki on his back who had more than her own fair share of liquor and Filo with a free arm who had succumb to the effect of Molasses food served with enough quantity to drop even the ravenous Filoliali to the ground, the only fortunate fact that she was in her humanoid form. The Hero doubted that he'd be able to roll the giant avian form anywhere.
"You and I both seem to be performing our duties with our wards…" A voice spoke from around the corner drawing the Heroes attention upwards to the face of Elias who was walking with an equally tired Chise in his arms. Despite the way she slept peacefully Elias did not seem to be in a chipper mood. His free hand did run alongside the side of her cheek as she rested while he gave the Shield Hero his attention. "I have a question if you wouldn't mind slating my curiosity."
Not that he was under any real strain he shrugged, "Sure go ahead and shoot."
"If I offer you my hand to leave this world… will you accept or continue on serving this world and its rules?"
Naofumi wasn't sure exactly why he was asking this to him again, he might have loyalties here but that was because of Filo and Raphtalia, maybe a little bit more than before considering the intimate relationship he now shared with her but… 'Where do I even stand now?' Naofumi felt much better about the current state of things than he had in the weeks prior, he had been cleared of wrongdoing, given compensation and watched those that had struck out against him been punished.
'If I was given the choice right here and now to leave, would I take it? Do I go back to my own world?' Of course even to him that was not entirely black and white anymore. 'Elias even offered to bring back Raphtalia and Filo back with me to our own world… while it may not be great I'm sure they could adapt much easier there than remaining here with all of the issues that they are currently facing.'
Still his thoughts went even deeper, would he leave them behind? Now certainly not, but with what the Queen had said about their current strengths would this world even be capable of being protected by the Heroes? 'Am I going to be acting out an exercise in futility if that's the case?' Would it be okay to cut and run… 'no, no that wouldn't be right, I can't just abandon them without trying can I?'
Yet even still how would things work if he did bring them back to his world? He couldn't just provide for them out of the blue, or even how time worked while he was here. Would he snap right back to where he had left off in the world or would he pop back in months or years later? It was almost painful for him to begin thinking about.
The mage offered up a small solution to Naofumi, "You seem to be struggling with a decision. You offered a hasty answer too when we first made a pact, but I shall offer you a choice if you come with me. Note this is only a one time offer should you choose to come with me, I will give your wards an opportunity to meet with the Mother Queen of all Fae. No doubt she and her husband Oberon would wish to know of this world's existence and could offer shelter to you and those whom you carry with you now and later. In that world they would live free from any persecution that you know of in our world and here. Although I can not promise that their lives would be entirely the same given how the land of the ever young affects those that walk within its boundaries. Undoubtedly you would change but you could spend many years living with them at the cost of giving up your own humanity."
Humans and Fae could co-exist to an extent and seeing that Naofumi himself had a deeper connection to the demi-humans of this world it should play some effect upon how the Faeries would view and accept him. Of course it was all hypothetical, it could make things very interesting if his theory would be proven true.
"You can't promise me that they would be safe in our world either then?"
He shook his head, "I never could make such a promise as I know only what I know. Speculation because there are never absolutes especially when it comes to the way in which fae operate. Her majesty could turn you and your wards out, or she could embrace you and covet you like she has done many mortals before. There are simply never any certainties… even here there are none. If I may ask what assurances do you have that should you complete the task given to you as a Hero that you will be returned back to our world as simple as that? What other Heroes and situations have arisen in your life that make you confident that nothing will change?" He was being blunt but honest with the teen. Elias could promise him nothing, but considering their history if there was someone who had been honest in his dealings between him and the country, Elias didn't doubt he would be the more truthful one. "So what would be your answer?"
His eyes looked away, and he just held back from speaking. "I don't have one, how can I make such a decision right now? I mean you haven't found a way back yet-!" Then a slow realization slapped him right across the face. "You… You can do it now, can't you?"
Was Elias simply testing or perhaps teasing him? Naofumi couldn't see any shift in the mage's features so how could he truly know unless he actually told him?
"What would be your answer? Do you wish to come with me to save yourself and your young or stay here and protect this world? The choice is yours. I merely am offering what I can to help you." The Magus knew there was still a great deal of conflict within him, 'Perhaps there are just one of many reasons that he would wish to stay, but it is not my place to speak of them.'
"H-Hey Wait!" Naofumi shouted as the Mage turned and began to walk away from him. "You didn't answer my question!?"
"Neither did you answer mine." The mage responded without even another glance back towards him.
The younger shield Hero left alone in the quiet of the evening his senses unable to detect the subtle shift in Raphtalia who had awoken during their conversation.
[***]
The following day was more tame, the gathering that had occurred last night had been pushed aside as it was time to get back to work for the parties involved, the island the Queen had mentioned was the new focus of all the Heroes. Packing up Heroes were looking to make for the port and set sail to this location as soon as possible.
However, the Shield Hero's party remained at the castle still. Naofumi having dipped off to go find an old acquaintance blacksmith he had visited when he first came here eager to see if all of the information that he had been given by the other Heroes in regards to copying abilities had been true if he simple began touching other shields which would drastically increase his potential.
As well as saying Hello to some old faces and perhaps repaying some kindness that he had been given back to them.
So this left Raphtalia, Filo, and Melty all sitting together just enjoying each other's company-Filo perhaps enjoying all the good food more than their company as much- but they were situated until the arrival of two seperate presences were outside the door.
The door was pushed open by Elias who simply guided Chise inside the room before closing it behind her.
"Chise?" The Tanuki said surprised, albeit not unhappy to be back in her old friend's presence getting up from her seat but Chise just motioned for her to sit back down.
"Sorry, Elias needed to begin some runework and wanted me to be here with you so that I would eat something more substantial since I haven't really had the appetite." FiguringDeciding to just tell them why she was here and avoid any further questioning about it. Considering she was still a little sore between her thighs and her body was more than just a little tired she just wanted the entire conversation to be simpler. Her sex life with Elias… that was just too akward to talk about.
"You seem to be doing better." Melty stared noticing that Chise seemed to be happier although she decided to ignore the obvious limp in her step.
Giving the princess a smile the Sleigh Beggy nodded. "Yeah I can keep a better focus of my Mana and energy when Elias keeps a close eye on me… Being a Surei Beggah I constantly pour out magical energy which can drain me alot."
"Chise it might be a bit selfish of me to ask… but if you and Elias could travel freely between worlds wouldn't you rather stay here with us?" This world was far more appreciative of her abilities at least in her mind. Her own world for years had just outright pushed this wonderful young girl to the edge many times. "I know it's not my place but isn't this better? You and Elias could find comfort in entire country's that are accepting of you and neither of you would have to hide away."
It was a touchy subject, reminding of the terrible treatment Chise had been through was not a pleasant memory but when comparing the two she did remember some of the good days she had with her mother and father. There were actual genuine moments when her entire life hadn't been completely turned upside down. 'But what would be the right answer? Would me and Elias be better off here?'
On the other hand the redhead could also feel that it wasn't solely out of goodness that Raphtalia had popped this question. She understood that Demi humans were also suffering from the affection that the fae creatures in her world did. They longed for their Queen's attention, her presence and aura would always help captivate the weaker fae who were unable to control themselves.
Elias had taken measures to help lessen some of those affects by masking her aura with his own. He called it tainting her so that she wouldn't unknowingly overwhelm demi humans and draw greater attention from the other creatures inhabiting this world. 'But I'm wondering if it really is working as well as Elias believes it should. Both Raphtalia and Filo aren't nearly as stuck to me like before but they still want to be around me.'
Recalling that it was hard for Raphtalia to even let Chise go to the bathroom beforehand was exhausting. "I don't know Raphtalia, I'll have to think about it, but it also isn't just my decision to make."
Forming along the docks. Crews manned by soldiers, merchants, nobility, and Hero alike were all waiting for their ships to be ready. Some had already departed earlier at the behest of some over eager parties but some ships were still preparing for the journey and with all manner of people looking to venture to the island it was quite the host of unique individuals. Some pairs of adventurers could be seen lining the harbor.
Leaving one group of people who were currently boarding their readying ship.
"Are we all set with supplies for the journey?" Naofumi asked as his group was being loaded onto the last ship to set sail for the rare island event on Cal Mira Archipelago that was looking like it would take place. Raphtalia was looking a bit squeamish as she walked up the long wooden gangway and almost tepidly took her time walking up.
"Come on Raphtalia I wanna see the boat so let's get moving!" Exclaimed an impatient Filo who was pushing up behind the Tanuki who was going much slower than she was appreciating.
"I'm going as fast as is appropriate!" The other member of the Shield Hero's party stated as she was holding onto the railings but it was evident the walk wasn't the reason for her distress as parts of the color in her face began to fade and almost turned to green as she saw the water moving below her. They hadn't even begun to start sailing yet and she was being punched squarely in the gut.
"Jeez, I didn't expect this to happen already." The Shield Hero commented, bringing a hand to scratch the back of his head as he watched Filo jump overtop of Raphtalia and shoot up the entryway and attempt to find Melty who was already onboard."
"I don't believe anything has happened yet." A regal voice spoke behind him alerting Naofumi that he had a visitor. His head turned back around to catch a surprising sight of Elias standing there, his face covered by a Veil and Chise wearing a brown robe of sorts covering her head beside him. She offered him a welcoming smile whereas Elias remained himself. His head slowly swirled around looking at all of the faces gathering themselves for the event. "It seems like things are still mundane." Taking note that there was no real excitement or buzz in the air to borrow a human phrase.
"It wasn't meant to be a statement, just things I'm noticing with my party… speaking of which are you going to be joining us?" Considering the state of the country's affairs it probably would be a good thing that Elias and Chise would be in the area to help out.
"We," Gesturing to himself and Chise with his free hand, "Will be going to the island but the reasons for the travel are not in line with your own."
'Translation I am doing my own thing so just let me do my own thing with Chise.' Naofumi took the more than obvious glairing hint, "Well did you feel like you would be able to answer my question from last night?" Deciding to just change topics and not look to pressure him for his aid and put him more in the spot since Chise was alert.
"I in fact do, however the magic and knowledge of this world require specific circumstances in regards to the world for the ability to traverse the webway connecting our worlds…Incidentally the opening of the waves of catastrophe weaken the connections between worlds allowing passage through them. The waves bring forth monsters and beings from another parallel world. As such I feel that it would be appropriate that we would use the same manner to return home." It had taken quite a few tomes, more than a dozen cups of tea and several vigorous sessions of lovemaking with his bride when he began to get frustrated in order to begin unraveling the mystery of this world's magic.
"Well, that is good news." Naofumi could appreciate a little of that, "So are you certain that you could open a way back home if you come with us?"
Elias made no gesture but merely lifted his head upwards. "Perhaps, but I can not be entirely certain this world is different than our own. The rules that govern what is and what is not possible are never as such. While I have confidence that I can find a way off this world, the key would be in locating a tether…" That was the biggest hurdle.
"You mean someone on the other side looking for us, like how the Fae creatures see me as one?" Chise said catching on quickly to what the Magus was speaking of. Like a focal point of magical energy for them to concentrate on. "If we don't have a tether we won't be sure that we're heading back to our world. Right?"
"Indeed. You remember that fact, Chise." Elias said with an exhale and putting a hand on her shoulder. "While I am apprehensive we would have to reach out in hopes that someone is looking for us. I know that Ruth would be the first choice but he might not have the magical energies as you're familiar given our separation… The second option, while more probable, may come with some minor complications." For a mage having an agreement with the Fae was a balancing act. On one hand they had an incredible amount of power to aid in spell casting, the other side of the coin was the demands and tricks that were often played upon those who did not know with what they were dealing with.
It was why he had kept a bell and a tether on Chise for many days back home… Now Elias assumed that he would have to bait out the right fairy to gain their own link back to their world. While Chise would more than likely be safe within a handful of their care but if they would reach out and make sure he was taken back… well that would be a hurdle to overcome. "I suspect that to succeed we will need to reach directly for Tir na nog itself. If her highness Titannia or Oberon were to catch sight of you they would without hesitation draw us back towards their world. Of course that might entail a slight stay within the realm of the forever young." It was not ideal but above all others he couldn't imagine seeking out Angelica, Lindel, or even some alchemist at the exact moment when they began calling out to them during the rift. His red eyes looked towards his young apprentice, "I will need your help in casting and finding the tether Chise. Your magic and aura would draw the attention of almost any fae and in doing so I will have you make the bridge between the two worlds and be drawn back over the veil."
"Wouldn't you be better suited for that Elias?" While she was sure that she could handle the task, it would make more sense that he would perform the spell he had much more control and had been reading the magics that actually taught him the spell.
"When channeling a teleportation spell I don't doubt that I would, the problem that we are currently afflicted by is the signal or call to our world. I'm sure that there would be a few hands reaching out to help me. But let me ask you this Chise, how many people would be truly concerned if I went missing… Aside from you yourself?" He reminded her of how she had told him that when he had left her one morning alone after wanting to speak with him she had spent the entire day looking for him. Even with his note to assure her that he would return Chise still set about trying to find him.
She blushed slightly and turned away. "I know there aren't a lot of people whom you would consider friends, but what if something happens and I screw up the spell or maybe overdo it?"
Of the people here Chise would always be willing to put herself in harm's way to protect others and do the right thing when a task or situation called for it. But in this circumstance, well… 'I would be putting not only my life in danger but Elias and Ruth. What If I screw this up and I never get to see anyone again?' Those thoughts alone were crushing to her. That her very own actions in the last moment would cost them everything, sending her and Elias flinging out into another world where they might be able to return. She was more confident that Elias would keep his composure and not be distracted. He had a talent for moments like these.
"Chise your abilities are only amplified by this world and from what I gathered so long as you are able to just control the spell everything will be fine. We need only have one person from the other side that is no doubt searching more for you find us." Elias looked towards the Hero, "once you obtain a spell all you merely need to do is recite the incantation and then I shall simply be there to hold on as we let you guide us home." He then looked back at her, his hand reached down to cup along her face, "Our shared home, just think about everything and everyone that makes it yours Chise."
'Everything that makes it mine?' She didn't make it a home, 'Silky, Ruth, the Fairies, Joel, Father Simon, and Elias. They make it a home, nothome, not me. Or is he?' She looked up at the mage who softly stroked the side of her head with his gloved hand.
The moment lasted a few more moments until the Magus turned to Naofumi, "You will have a decision to make at that time." His cowledcowled visage gave him a long look. "You must decide whether or not you wish to return home with us."
"I'll have an answer for you when the waves come, but I won't rush anything until that time. I still have to talk with Raphtalia and Filo and even with that I wouldn't want to leave this world to its own demise." He still had his principles, there were some good people here and he couldn't make the decision to just outright abandon it if he could save it. 'But if there's no hope and this might be my chance to save someone I'll try and do some good instead of nothing.'
"That is your choice. I will not ask it again until I am ready to commence the spell." He then moved his hand to his bride's back. "Let us find our rooms aboard this scrap of wood Chise."
"Alright." She said consenting as he began to walk towards the wooden gangways but she gave Naofumi a final look. "I see how important these people are to you and in some ways I would want to stay as well to make sure everyone is okay but I have a lot of people who gave me a reason to live again and are waiting for me… You just do what is right in your heart, okay?" She took one of his hands and gave the Hero a smile.
"Thanks Chise." He said giving a half hearted smile back to which she drew back and followed Elias who stood at the ramp leading up to the bow of the ship.
[***]
There were more than just a few handfuls of people now filling the boat. To the Shield Hero the event on Cal Mira was going to be more than just a big xp grind session. There was going to be all sorts of festivities to enjoy if there wasn't quite a crowd gathered onboard to tell him that.
Raphtalia was looking better, she wasn't feeling the best, perhaps the water and waves were doing her stomach no kind favors. But fortunately they did have an incredible healer in the form of Chise to help mitigate her symptoms of most likely motion sickness.
This left Naofumi up top with Filo who was eagerly looking over the railing down at the waves rocking and rolling with the movement of the large sailing ship. Standing at the ship's front near the front mast was Elias, his composure remaining stoic as his arms crossed and just staring out into the expanse of all of the waves.
Perhaps his own mind had slipped or was lost in his own thoughts when a voice unfamiliar to him called out for his attention. "Oi! How's it going over there Kid!" The Shield Hero's head turned thinking it might be one of the other Heroes but it wasn't. The man was much taller, his build far more muscular. One arm and shoulder covered in leather and metal straps as a form of armor leaving his other arm free as he hefted a large cloth covered item, more than likely a weapon over his shoulder as he walked forwards. His rising brown hair and cocky grin gave him the impression that he was probably some hotshot but looked the part as well.
Beside him was a younger woman, light blue ocean colored hair. Wearing a fair dress of dark blue and white clothes, obviously more of a caster with decorative charms and bands that would be something Naofumi had been crafting in his free time on her wrists and one around her ankle. She didn't offer any words but a bright smile.
"Oi, you hear me over there?" The man repeated coming forwards with a big cocky grin still on his face.
"Sorry, I just assumed you were yelling at the water." Naofumi replied with a smirk to which the other guy laughed.
"Yeah good to see a proper Hero like yourself on this little excursion." The tall man gave him a once over, "You definitely look like the shield hero." Bringing a hand up to his chin studiously. "The whole rogue bandit rumors really are spot on."
"God not more of those," Naofumi groaned, bringing a hand to cover his face. "Could I ask who you are since you clearly seem to know who I am?"
"Ah, well I am L'arc and this fine little thing next to me is the lovely Therese." He said half bowing to the woman beside him. "We're adventurers to join in on all the fun."
"L'arc you're being awfully presumptuous he hasn't even given us his name and you are just assuming things." The blue haired woman half scolded before offering an outstretched hand to Naofumi. "My name is Therese might I have yours?"
"Well you guys already know it. But officially yeah I'm the shield Hero Naofumi Iwatani." He said taking the offering and giving it a firm shake.
"Wow," Was all Filo said as she turned to see the two new bodies standing beside her master. Without much effort she could feel just how much strength these new arrivals had. Of course they weren't as strong as her Master but she did like them a bit better than the other Heroes just on first impression. "Hiya!" She announced coming forward, "I'm Filo and also a Filoliali!" offering her usual childish smile that made the two new adventurers smile back in appreciation.
"Cute little thing aren't you?" L'arc laughed, bringing a hand down to messily ruffle the Blonde girl's hair. With that cocky grin still plastered on his face he looked back to the Shield Hero. "Since we're heading to the same location would you be interested in teaming up? It would be much more efficient if we could work together and we can always split the drops and equipment to be fair between both groups."
"I'll have to check together with my party but I definitely will keep the offer in mind." Naofumi said at least giving the man his hand. "Appreciate the offer."
"Not a problem kiddo." L'arc laughed, slapping the Hero's hand with a fair amount of strength in the shake.
"Uhm," Therese interjected, "I heard you are a skilled craftsman Naofumi. Is that true?" There was a rumor that the Shield Hero himself was quite the jewelcrafter.
The Hero nodded, "Yeah I've made myself a few handy baubles and trinkets for my party. Is there something you'd like from me?" He actually didn't mind these people, they didn't seem all that bad.
"Yes, I would like a new magical bracelet made, I also have the materials that you can use. Whatever you don't utilize you can keep as payment." Therese reached down to her pouch, handing off her side and drew a large brown sack covering a hefty sized rock which she unveiled for him to be a huge red ruby crystal.
Naofumi's eyes went a bit wide, he'd never seen something like that before. "Wow, I can certainly do something with this."
"Excellent, whenever you can have time for it I would appreciate it." Therese gave a bow to the Hero who smiled and thanked her for the gem. He probably would use more than half of it to craft something worthwhile and he didn't see too much of a problem with them as people he would give her a nice trinket as a way of thanks for the praise of his ability and not treating him like dirt.
"Well alright then we'll be catching you later Kiddo." L'arc laughed before turning around with Therese, the two of them walking away from Naofumi who placed the large gem inside his cloak.
"They were strange… but nice!" Filo commented having a mirror sensation to that of her master who had to admit that he got the exact same vibes. They were nothing like most of the others they had met which counted a Sleigh Beggy and a crazy homunculus should not be all too surprising of company.
No one noticed as Elias vanished from his position above deck, blending down into the shadows to slip between the cracks of the boards of the ship bending and twisting his way below deck. His form coalesced behind the form of his bride who was applying some of her healing magic to the head of Raphtalia who was still suffering from the rocky waters.
"Hey Elias." Chise said not even looking back around towards his shadow form overtaking her shadow. Feeling the change in the room was easy and could tell without too much effort that it was him. He was not trying to be subtle. Her hand gently ran over Raphtalia's head as the red faced Tanuki was still resting.
"I take it she is still recovering or is she worsening in her condition?" He had gone up to give 'space' for the raccoon girl trying to rest but she did have nausea and he did not wish to stomach the sight of demi human vomit.
"I think she's fine but it's almost like a natural sickness." Chise looked to Elias who seemed confused by her answer. "I'm not sure how to say it, but her body is fine but also not fine."
"I see…" Chise didn't know if he entirely understood that confusing line but she hoped that he did because she knew that Raphtalia suffered from motion sickness. She was never the best traveling companion for long rides but this seemed worse but her magic wasn't really abating the physical problems.
Elias released a hum as he formed a physical body behind Chise his shadowy figure appearing over her limbs that touched Raphtalia's head. "I believe that there is a natural answer to your friend's condition."
"There is?" Chise was more than surprised that Elias could tell, 'Wait.' "You already knew about this didn't you?"
There hadn't even come an explanation but the magus hadn't bothered sharing what was going on with her even as the poor girl had been suffering. "I thought it was obvious, but you are adept at reading emotions and people's auras, not so much the physical symptoms like myself."
"Then what is wrong with her?" She pressed as she wasn't worried per say, but she was concerned about how she could help her.
"She is… well in a human term-" Chise's eyes went wide as Elias leaned down to whisper in her ear the words that both made her happy and shocked at the same time.
The remainder of the boat journey, ignoring Raphtalia's sickness, was the only major event which gave the Shield Hero a brief although not entirely quiet respite as Filo got a little anxious just standing around on the boat and with Elias just relaxing as Chise helped the ailing Tanuki. Naofumi figured it would just be better to keep things quiet until they arrived.
The landing was uneventful with the group disembarking onto the island. The other Heroes having already gathered their groups together and made preparations to set out from the moment they landed giving the Shield Hero's party coming back into contact with L'arc and Therese who Naofumi figured that maybe a day of grouping up would give him some fresh perspective and if things were harder than he might believe then strength in numbers would be a good thing and he would give high marks to both L'arc and Therese who were quite strong but he couldn't put his finger down as to exactly how strong they truly were.
"Hey i'm glad that you agreed to the deal, be real nice to see how the Shield Hero fights but I've got a small question…" His voice trailing off as he leaned down to whisper into the Hero's ear. "Who exactly are we traveling with?"
'Who indeed?' As there was not only Raphtalia who looked better albeit she didn't entirely remove her nausea. Filo who was her usual self and… Elias and Chise.
"The answer to your question is simple young L'arc." Elias spoke in his calm tone, his face covered by the veil but the breeze that blew across the island did show some bits of his boney face. "I am Pilum Moralis the thorn mage but also known as Elias and to my side is my beloved bride."
"Ehhm, yeah I'm Chise. Sorry Elias is a bit forward with our relationship." The younger redhead was never quite so comfortable with the way Elias was so casual about their 'situation' but he was also Elias so there wasn't anything she could do about that.
"Hah," L'arc just released a chuckle. "Not a problem but you two are just different but hey let's get the day going and start some grinding alright?"
"Um, if I may ask, what exactly are you?" Therese said as the enchanted gear she wore twitched, making the sign of an impending threat nearby. It was worrying as there were obvious inhuman features about him. Yet those known to him did not feel the least bit uncomfortable.
But Elias did not offer up an answer, Chise took the opportunity to assure the woman that their mage was no threat to them. "Elias is just himself, he's not human of course but don't worry he's not going to do anything to you." Leaving out any notion that he could very well turn on anyone who he perceived as a direct threat to her or himself.
"Well introductions are over, now let's get to work and see if this place was what is was supposed to be."
The newly acquainted band of adventurers followed behind Naofumi with L'arc and Therese in the middle and Elias bringing up the rear. It was a quick start, the group testing the area by killing what would be considered the weaker monsters and instantly began culling huge hordes of gathered creatures and monsters without any real degree of trouble. Naofumi and Filo took up the front lines with L'arc and Raphtalia attacking as the riposte for any attacks followed up with Chise and Therese giving out supporting magic.
Naofumi drawing the horde's of slimes and beasts to him with his cerberus and poison shields respectfully. Filo pushed and gathered up those not distracted by the Shield Hero with her bullish attacks and wind magic pushing them into close groups. Chise's support magic empowered the spear point of the party as Therese cast destructive magic to crush the stronger elements. Raphtalia and L'arc cut a path through the monsters not pinned down.
All of them were a good team working together and fitting their fighting styles and combat experience fluidly, with the exception of Elias who remained quiet and behind the two supporting casters. He offered up nothing to the grind simply following around and observing. The group continued this progress for several hours as their confidence swelled along with a few levels in the short time they had been out there and went further inland. Rarer and much stronger beasts making their presence known. Gryphons, lizardmen, and greater beasts.
Progress was progress and as they continued to fight Naofumi felt the cold observation coming from his party. 'What is Elias doing?' The Shield Hero could feel the gaze following him with greater focus than before. Bashing a slime into the air so that Filo could jump up and rapidly slash it several times just as Therese summoned a gout of fire to blast away several more cleaning up the area, it was well past midday when Naofumi whistled. "Alright everyone, let's take a break here."
"Yeah I could use a good break for now Kiddo." L'arc commented, taking a moment to wipe the sweat from his eyes and brow.
"Lunchtime yay!" Filo shouted happily, transforming back into her humanoid form as the small group gathered themselves up.
"Elias?" Chise asked, showing a fair few drops of sweat coming down from her eyes having done her fair share of magic casting today and while she could consider that she was never a big fan of video games or dungeon like partying today had been enjoyable. However, she noticed that Elias had done nothing except walk with them and had said fewer than zero words. She brought a hand to touch his fingers which still did not cause him to react instead he consented to her wishes and let her hand pull towards herself. "Elias… what is wrong?" She said a bit more of a whisper sensing that he was more on edge than usual.
Since the trip started he'd been much more reserved than she was used to.
But the mage took a step forwards and moved to block Chise's view of the party and wrapped both of his arms around her back. "Do not make them think there is something amiss." He told her sternly. "Put your arms around me, make them think everything is fine." His voice only able to be heard by her, not doubting his concern she did as she was told feeling that Elias was being cautious for a reason.
"What's-"
"Shh," Hushed her. "This is not the time or place to speak. "Come." He said scooping her up and into his arms. Carrying her away from the gathering of people, moving with purpose but not in a blind rush. Still Chise looked towards the group then to Elias who kept moving. He could tell that she wished to speak, to begin questioning him and his actions. But now was not that time, not while they were still close. "Please remain quiet." He spoke again, still his hands brushing aside the foliage, his own senses were pulsing and instinctively he trusted himself to keep going until the threat of danger was gone.
Holding up his hand as they rounded a tree Elias began an incantation. "Branches of old, both of the forest young and old hide my sight with your sight." The magics flashing with that of the light of a sun before fading back into nothing. The illusion cast, but it was one of many, he then shrouded their words and hid their smells next before finally he addressed the very concerned teen in his arms. "That should keep them from getting involved for the moment."
"Would you tell me what's going on, you know how much I-" He brought his finger to her lips hushing her again.
"Your concern is noted, but I do not have long to keep you. They are already suspicious of me and since I do not unveil what I am they do not act upon that." His head turned back towards where they had come.
She shook her head, "What are you talking about Elias? What are you so worked up about?" Was he losing it again? Why was he like this sometimes?
"You might not see it but I did Chise, perhaps even Naofumi did though he is not hiding himself in any manner that I would feel to be safe." Perhaps it was a plan? The mage couldn't be entirely sure.
"You are overreacting. Are you concerned about L'arc and Therese? We just met them and their helping us." SHe brought a hand to her head as she tried to wrap her mind around this entire situation with her Elias being this way. Sure they weren't the most normal of people but Therese was a bit tepid but nice and L'arc was more of the overconfident jock type but neither of them seemed to be threatening, a little too eager to help out but that still didn't explain the reasoning for his behavior.
"Helping yes, but I have been watching them this entire time, their actions as I follow their eyes and movements along the lines of each of their shadows." The great mage was not one for simple deception, "Everytime they look for me to perform an action, looking to work on a strategy to hear what the others think. "They may not be direct threats now but every action they are taking are in line with one wanting to read their opponent. I believe it would be akin to the stories of your sherlock holmes wanting to know the moves of the suspect before he can take them and often times they attempt to gain a better understanding of what would be done by following along or befriending the one they suspect." It was perhaps a base analogy and one that she might be more understanding of, bringing out more complex philosophical arguments were never the best on Chise, not because he saw her as less intelligent but her scope of the world was quite lacking by comparison. He was used to being the hunter, following and stalking prey back when he was more feral or far less refined that he could've been. It was why he had been silent the moment they had been on the boat.
As a predator himself he was aware of other predators, man or beast.
'Okay maybe he's not wrong but we are trying to work together. I don't exactly see the harm in that.' "Why do you believe that, maybe they just want to function better with us?"
"Chise, Naofumi did not approach them for aid… they went looking for him knowing who he was. They weren't concerned about us tagging along out of concern for our well being but for their own so I ask why? Not once have they brought up my lack of skills or use of magic because then it would be obvious they wish to keep working alongside the shield hero even though we are in a team setting." Elias drew up his red veil with one hand, "Even if their intentions are not to cause harm to Naofumi I would not trust them as someone who can be relied upon. Those who often appear the most friendly without cause or reason generally have something they want out of it and they have not expressed any reason to believe that their intentions are not righteous or pure."
'Friendly and without reason.' What happened to Mina and Mathew back in her world, "But," she wished to protest but Elias continued to stare at her until she finally averted her gaze not trying to get into an argument with him considering he wouldn't let it go and would probably begin explaining every small inconsistency he observed based on what he understood about humans.
"Do not worry," He brought his hand to rest atop her head while his own looked up towards the sky. "I will ensure we are safe when I begin the spell and I promise no harm will come to you while you seek our tether to return home."
'If only it could be so simple.'
