A/N Hello again! Welcome to a well-written self insert fanfic.

Usual disclaimer of I Don't Own RWBY. If I did, then the characters would problem-solve Salem better.

Chapter 1: Grimm Studies 101

Ruby (3rd Person)

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang, and Team JNPR (Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha, and Ren) rushed into the first class of the year just before the bell rang. There were long rows of desks in the classic Lecture Hall look. Ruby thought that's what lecture halls would look like based on movies, anyway. There was a double-bladed axe shotgun (SQUEE) hanging on the wall, and diagrams of Grimm on the back. From what she could see, there were ones for King Taijitu, Death Stalkers, Beowolves, Boarbatusks, Nevermore, and Ursai. There were two people at the front of the classroom.

One was an older guy in red. He was portly, and had a giant mustache and permanent squint. There were golden links holding the coat together. The other guy was very different. He was taller than the professor, but lankier than Jaune. He had dark blue hair and brown eyes, and was very pale-skinned. He was wearing a T-shirt and baggy sweatpants, and why did he have acne. He looked like a civilian teenager. Well, except for the thing on his arm. It looked like a Scroll, but armored?

Apparently, Wiess thought the same thing. "Why is he here? And where is his uniform?" She asked angrily.

"I'm glad you asked," he said. His voice was definitely pubescent. "Team Fairy Tale, Team Crossdresser, you're here. Take a seat."

Ruby wondered how he heard that. And why he called them those names. Team JNPR looked confused, and then irritated. Jaune blushed.

"I am Azure Turner, assistant Grimm Studies teacher. My semblance is knowing whatever I need to know at the moment. Which is why I'm a teacher despite being younger than all of you. Also, you can call me Mr. Turner, or Mr. Azure. I don't really care which."

The portly guy spoke up. "And this is the Grimm Studies class. Monsters! Deeeemons... Prowlers of the night! Yes, the creatures of Grimm have many names, but I merely refer to them as prey! Ha-ha!"

You could hear the crickets in the background.

Ruby started to doodle something, but then she heard Mr. Azure speak.

"They can also be called Shadow Beasts, Surprise Werewolves, Ultra Beasts, and so many other things. But how is this relevant?"

Professor Port seemed to realize this. "And you will call them prey as well, upon graduating from this prestigious academy. Huntsmen - Huntresses..." He winked at Yang.

Mr. Azure crossed the podium to Port and slapped him in the back of the head.
"Don't flirt with the students. It's creepy and you know it." He turned and faced the students, clapping his hands together. "Anyway, normally this class is going to have two parts. I talk about the Grimm of the week for ten-ish minutes, and then Port tells a related - generally useful - story, with me commenting. Then, someone usually gets to fight the Grimm of the week."

"Caught by your more skilled teacher - me!"

"Of course, Pete. Of course." Azure said sarcastically.

Most of the class were paying attention now.

"However, there is a difference this week." Professor Port spoke up again, in his usual bombastic tone. "Because Azure was hired very recently, I already captured a small Boarbatusk and had a story prepared for this lesson. So I shall simply be telling the story - "

"With increased commentary. Of course." Mr. Azure said dryly. Everyone was paying attention now.

"Hmph. So, today's story is about a young, handsome man - me!"

The class groaned.

"When I was a lad, I lived in a small village far away from Vale. We were fairly peaceful, until one day, a Beowolf started harassing us. We had no huntsmen at the time -"

"Because your family forgot to pay the last one." Azure cut in.

Professor Port grumbled. "As I was saying, we had no huntsmen at the time, so I took it upon myself to slay the beast! The first thing I did was to do some research.

Azure (1st Person)

Port continued. "Despite smelling of cabbages, my grandfather was a wise man. 'Peter', he told me, `you need to be careful. There are many dangers -' "

"No duh". I snarked.

Port glared at me. He then went back to talking about his grandfather's advice. I took the time to scan around the room. Pretty much everyone was at least half paying attention, which was more than there was last time/in the episode. Ruby, however, was still starting to doodle. "Hey! Little Red!" I talked over Port.

Ruby jumped like a foot in the air. "Why did you call me that? What?"

"Reasons, and catch." I got a fidget spinner out of my pocket and threw it to her. "If you need to stim, use that instead. It lets you pay more attention to class than doodling."

She looked surprised. I turned to my colleague and said, "Pete, you can keep talking now."

"I told you not to call me that!"

"Fine, Peter."

Port resumed talking. "After consulting my grandfather, I took my family's most prized possession -" he gestured to the double-bladed axe-shotgun (I need to get one. It is awesome.) "And set off into the woods. The beast was smart - had I not killed it, it may have become an Alpha soon after. The first day it tried to shake me off by using a river, but I spotted its passage. Later, it tried to -"

"Hurry up, will you? Someone has to fight the Boarbatusk."

"As I was saying, it was a difficult foe, but I managed to track it to its lair. After carefully tracking it and its pack for days, it split off from the pack for an unknown reason. I charged it without fear. In the end, the Beowolf was no match for my sheer tenacity. I captured it, and was hailed by my village as a hero!"

A few people clapped.

"Why did you capture it instead of killing it?" I asked.

"So that all could know it was done, of course! Now the moral of the story… A true huntsman must be honorable!"

I looked over at Ruby, and sighed. She had dropped my fidget spinner, and was getting up to the same antics as last time.

"A true huntsman must be dependable!"

And Weiss was going to explode. Of course.

"A true Huntsman must be strategic, well-educated, and wise! So, who among you believes themselves to be the embodiment of these traits?"

I took the opportunity to butt in. "Most of them do, but let's let Snow White there fight the Boarbatusk before she explodes from irritation."

I heard several snickers. Weiss looked shocked, and then glared at me. Mission successful.

Weiss

Weiss stood ready to face her opponent five minutes later. She held her rapier, Myrtenaster, ahead of her in a standard stance, as her team cheered her on. While all of them were distracting (seriously, this was a fight), she decided to focus on her 'leader.' No she wasn't mad about not being the leader! Shut up!

"Ruby! I'm trying to focus!" She whined snapped.

"Sorry..." the child said dejectedly.

Professor Port stood next to the cage, Blowhard (the axe-shotgun-thing - he had told them it's name after Ruby asked) raised. "Allllright! Let the match - begin!" He swung the axe down, releasing the small Boarbatusk.

The Grimm-pig charged her. She used Myrtenaster to deflect its attack and roll to the side, readying herself for its next move. The Grimm stood a distance away, studying her.

"Ha-ha! Wasn't expecting that, were you?" Port proclaimed.

"Hang in there, Weiss!" Ruby yelled.

"Why are you yelling? It isn't very loud, and they've only made one attack apiece." Professor Azure said. Like he was an actual professor.

Weiss ran towards the armored pig, aiming her rapier straight for the Boarbatusk's armored head. This proved to be a bad idea, as Myrtenaster got trapped between its tusks. Weiss held on, and got thrown around trying to get it back.

"Well now you got your sword stuck. Congrats." Azure said. Ugh, he is so frustrating, Weiss thought.

"Come on Weiss, show it who's boss." That was Ruby again. Weiss turned to glare, and then the Grimm ripped Myrtenaster from her hand and sent it sprawling away.

"Oh-ho! Now what will you do without your weapon?" Port said.

"Better than Little Red would." Azure responded.

Ruby pouted. Weiss smirked. The Boarbatusk charged.

Weiss dodged out of the way and towards Myrtenaster, sliding to grab it as the Boarbatusk crashed into a desk. "Weiss! Go for the belly! There's no armor underneath!" Ruby yelled at her.

"Stop telling me what to do!" She turned towards Ruby.

"Focus on the demon pig, Snow White." Azure again.

The pig curled up into a ball, rolling at her like a runaway train. She conjured a Glyph to block it, then leaped onto another one and slammed into the stunned Boarbatusk, killing it.

"Well played, Snow White." Azure turned to the class. "Now who can tell me what she did wrong?"

A few different answers came up - she dropped her weapon, she didn't use her glyphs - before Azure stopped taking answers. "The correct answer is that she got distracted. Snow White ignored the threat to berate Little Red, who was offering sound tactical advice. I don't know why she did it - I think she was salty about not getting to be leader -" Weiss glared. Azure ignored her. "- but bottom line, it was stupid. Class dismissed."

Weiss hurriedly walked towards the exit. Most of the class's eyes were on her.

After they got outside, Ruby stopped her. "Is that really why you snapped at me?"

"Yes," Weiss snapped back. "You're supposed to be a leader, but all you've been so far is a nuisance. Back in the forest, you acted like a kid. You never earned your position. I have studied. I have trained. And I deserve better!"

Ruby was almost crying now. "What happened to 'working as a team'?"

"Not a team led by you." Weiss turned and strutted away.

A little way down the hallway, Weiss felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around, and found Azure looking down on her. How is he taller than me but younger? she thought angrily.

"I just wanted to say something." Weiss scoffed. As if he could teach her anything about this. "Leader selection is different depending on what organization you're in. Sometimes it's about who is the best fighter, other times something else. But I've seen team leaders nowhere near the best fighter pull their teams together through crises that almost split them apart, and others who could tear apart a Deathstalker in seconds but couldn't lead themselves out of a parking lot. Think about that."

Azure turned and walked away. Weiss stood there for a few seconds, then went back to looking for Professor Port.

Azure (1st Person)

Later

I sat quietly in the tree outside team RWBY's dorm, watching through my magic drone - camera.

"Hey, Ruby?" I heard from inside.

The camera swiveled to look at Ruby.

"Uh-huh?"

It went back to Weiss and the door."I always wanted bunk beds as a kid."

As the door closed, I stopped recording. I pulled up a new holographic screen from my arm-thing, slotting the video into place. I saved the file as

Altered Timeline 1: Grimm Studies 101 (The Badge and The Burden, pts 1 and 2)

And started to climb down so I could go to sleep.

A/N: So what do you think? I tried to make it so that Port's story would be interesting if it weren't him boasting for several minutes. Please leave reviews, a new chapter is coming next week.
