The Batcave was one of the most secure places on the planet. Whole generation of villains have tried, multiple times, to find it; the amount of those successful is too small to even count, and even they lost to the Dark Knight in the end. Some of those were even lured in, as Dracula found out himself in a very unfortunate – and lethal - way.
However, no defense is perfect, and no place is unassailable. Which is why Batman, in addition to all the work put into hiding the Batcave, also littered it with multiple sensors. Cameras, motion detectors, laser tripwires, and more created a maze that no normal intruder could hope to avoid.
Sadly, there were still two ways that the Batcave security could be defeated, even despite all the extensive preparations. First was through trust; anyone who would manage to gain enough of Batman's trust in some way – as rare as it was – would have much easier time gaining knowledge about and subsequently avoiding most of the defense systems. Second way was to utilize some new, previously unknown technology that could fool all sensors in the Batcave in some way.
Which is why, if Batman could now see inside the Batcave, he would be more disappointed than surprised seeing the intruder now accessing the Bat-computer. Sadly, the caped crusader was not present, allowing the intruder free reign in their nefarious goal.
Slowly, but surely, all main files regarding the Agammemnon Contingency were downloaded on a portable storage device. "I have them all. Every main file." The intruder said, looking at the screen.
"Good." Was the answer from the communicator they were holding. "Before you leave, there is one more thing. Find and download all the secondary Agamemnon files as well. We will need them."
The intruder quickly navigated to the secondary files folder, and looked at its contents, surprised. "Are you sure? They're just a bunch of kids. Hardly the most dangerous opponents."
"Just do as I say. They may look small and helpless, just a bunch of children, but in truth they are formidable warriors already. We cannot risk our plan failing at this stage. Everything else is set up."
The intruder just nodded, and quickly downloaded all the secondary files. Soon, they were all stored safely on the portable device, ready to be unleashed on their unsuspecting victims.
The most dangerous plan, made by the genius mind with access to knowledge and technology few could ever dream of. One that even the immortal mastermind himself could not create; one that could defeat even the mightiest heroes.
The Agamemnon Contingency.
In Jump City, it was a day of the great festival. With summer fast approaching, and weather becoming warmer and warmer every day, the city mayor decided it was the best time for something he planned for quite some time. The city owed Titans more than just money and saved buildings; the cost of lives saved was impossible to even calculate. Announcing a big festival dedicated to Jump City's defenders was but a small token of gratitude.
At least, that was the official explanation. Upcoming elections to the city council may have something to do with it as well, Robin suspected, but on the other hand it was still nice. After the horrible trials his team had to pass lately, with Slade almost causing his entire team to fall apart, he welcomed a small reprieve.
Of course, as a slightly annoying side effect, he had to make some kind of appearance. He wasn't really used to any kind of superhero celebrations in Gotham – that city was too corrupted and rotten for something like this to happen. However, in Jump he was pleasantly surprised how many people actually liked the Titans. Overwhelming majority, according to recent polls. The remaining minority was composed of die-hard, hopeless Luthor fans, but fortunately they were few and far between.
Even local press was much closer to the Metropolis then Gotham nowadays. Superman was always seen as a sign of hope, and gentle, but unyielding strength. After fighting Darkseid multiple times and saving Metropolis from many other threats as well, most people there loved their savior. And of course, newspapers used it to boost their own popularity by praising him. And now, Jump City press and other media were following suit.
In the end, it was good for Titans, and good for superheroes in general. Which is why, when the mayor invited them, Robin had doubts instead of just refusing. He only agreed when he learned that the mayor himself was not going to appear – a surprising move for a politician wanting to cash on political support right now, but welcomed nonetheless. Since the even was now politics-free, Robin decided to accept.
Which lead to him, right now, in full inform, talking with random people on the festival grounds. He was never a big fan of these events, even as Dick, but in his usual manner he just ignored his discomfort. Besides, some of these people were actually surprisingly nice, not bothering him much. He did feel sorry for Raven, though. She was obviously unhappy about having to appear publicly, even if for a short time.
He was listening to some kid – not much younger than him, actually – gushing over 'the Wonder Boy' and asking some pretty random questions (Were you ever in space? Did you fight Killer Croc? Did Poison Ivy ever kiss you?) when he heard four beeps in his communicator.
His blood went cold. He managed to hide it, as usual, but his mind instantly switched to full superhero mode. He excused himself from the conversation, and left. He quickly used his gadgets to jump on top of some festival-built buildings, and then moved out of the area until he was sure he was alone and not followed. Standing on top of some building, he opened his communicator.
As he expected, it was a message from Batman. It had high emergency codes – very bad sign; these ones were second-worst ones, only used when threats like Joker would appear. The only higher level was reserved for existential threats like Darkseid. Seeing this code used here, in Jump, tt couldn't be good in any way. Did Joker decide to attack him, to lure Batman out? Did Batman only now learned about Slade? Was it some new, unknown villain?
For a moment, he considered asking someone else to come with him, but he deiced against it. While other Titans were all available – and, somehow, the mayor got Wonder Woman to make an appearance, so she was also an option – for now the message was only asking him to come and meet in the cellar of one of abandoned buildings in the city. Knowing Batman, he wouldn't just invite him to some place to immediately make an attack on a villain, without extensive preparations, so whatever it was he could just call in his team later.
And of course, there was also another thing on his mind as he made his way to the building. He really hoped Bruce has a good explanation and good reason to be in Jump. If he just appeared to warn him about Slade, well, he's in for a surprise. Robin is now a superhero on his own, he doesn't need Batman anymore. He and his team managed to defeat Slade already.
In fact, he was actually slightly hoping that was the reason. Having a possibility to show Batman how professional Robin is, how competent and capable, would be amazing. He would, of course, not share the full story – his initial defeat at the hands of Slade was too embarrassing – but the remaining parts would definitely prove Wonder Boy's ability to fight supervillains.
He arrived in the old factory, and easily found the cellar entrance. It was wide open; the steel doors were barely holding on rust-covered hinges. He didn't see any new tracks – not that he expected any with Batman being wary enough to alarm him. Robin also made sure to not leave any signs of his presence; it wasn't hard, with many old shelves, heavy machinery and other equipment covering the ground floor of the factory.
He walked underground, looking around and expecting Batman to suddenly appear, as he usually did. He was actually wondering if stealth training he did with Beast Boy would actually help him spot Batman first this time around; he never managed before. He closed his eyes, and tried to focus on the slightest noises around.
Silence. Weird. Normally Bruce would already dramatically appear from shadows. Robin opened his eyes and looked behind him; nothing. He was already in the middle of the cellar, and only saw dust, cobwebs, old machinery and some trash lying around.
Moments later, he heard some steps from above. Batman? No, the steps were too heavy. His mind realized what was going on just seconds before the steel doors above him closed with a loud thump, cutting off any light.
He instantly switched on his nightvision and dodged, expecting an attack from the dark; but nothing came. Instead, he heard loud noises from the ground floor above, like someone – someone extremely strong – was dragging heavy machinery on top of the doors leading down. A trap. Robin left alone all the questions – how did they knew? Was Batman involved in some way? – and focused on getting out. There was a pair of huge, industrial doors leading out, however they were in much better condition, and not easy to break out. Besides, judging by the lack of light, it was also blocked from the outside somehow.
He whipped out his communicator. "Titans! Trouble!". Silence. Of course; the reinforced walls were probably blocking the signal. He had to get the signal out, somehow. As much as he hated to admit it, and he would try to find another way, he was very effectively trapped. Was it Slade? Were his friends in danger again?
He spent few minutes, looking around for any way out, and waiting until whoever was moving things on the ground floor would leave. Whowever that was, was close in strength to Bane, if not stronger. Bad news. Sadly, he didn't find any way out, but he found something else. Few metal canisters were put here recently; without touching the ground, so no tracks left. A lot of effort was put into this trap, but why?
Suddenly, he heard a quiet hiss coming from one of the containers, and instantly realized he is in much bigger danger than he thought. Gas. Hopefully just sleeping gas, but possibly lethal. He cursed; this was literally the worst situation ever. He didn't have enough explosives to break out of the trap, and he quickly realized all wall were made of reinforced concrete. Floor as well.
He run to the steel doors leading to the ground floor; while they were probably as blocked as the outer doors, they were also in a pretty bad condition. If he managed to make a single hole in them… there! His trained eye quickly realized that the rusted hinges were a perfect weak point.
He put few explosive bird-a-rangs there. Most of the explosion would be dissipated by the air, but by sticking it barely between wall and hinges, he ensured at least some of it would go to the weakened metal. He took few steps back and detonated. As he hoped, the door gave in; they broke off the remaining, equally rusted hinges, and fell down.
His hope of escaping was quickly dashed by the amount of heavy things stacked on top of it. Even using all his gadgets and muscles, here was no way he could move or destroy it; it looked like half of the remaining machinery was dumped here. Fortunately, it was no longer a solid metal wall; signal from his communicator should be able to break through now!
"Titans, trouble!" He shouted into his communicator on the Titan frequency. Silence. Were they also under attack? He imagined them being attacked again, this time much more effectively and lethal. No, no, no! He switched his communicator to the Justice League emergency frequency. "This is Robin, emergency! Anyone available, please respond!"
Silence was the only answer. Unknown to Robin, all members of Justice League were already under attack, incapacitated in some way. None of them were able to help.
And his own teammates were all incapacitated, as well… or dying.
For all his abilities and sharp mind, Robin is too sure of himself, proud, and at the same time trusting in his master. If there is ever a need to stop him or separate him from his team, it is just a matter of luring him into a prepared trap from which, lacking any powers, he will not be able to escape.
