Mustang sat anxious and annoyed at his desk, the evening sun partially blinding him while he tried to listen to Havoc and Hawkeye give the specifics on why they hadn't been able to find Ed. Ed who had taken a simple case yesterday morning and should have been back within a couple of hours, not gone missing for two god damn days. His brain had run through a thousand terrible situations and he was sure he was going to have a heart attack at any moment.
Suddenly the door flew open and smashed against the wall, a welcome sound if Roy had ever heard one, and it took most of his will power not to jump out of his chair and rush over. His mood changed the second Ed started to make her way over to them.
Limping!? What the hell had happened?! FullMetal had only taken two steps and it was obvious she was trying to get her automail to do most of the work as she staggered closer. Her eyes seemed unable to focus and when she finally made it to his desk she didn't even hesitate before climbing up onto it, over it, and into his lap. One knee on each side of his hips, arms wrapped over his shoulders as she buried her forehead against his neck.
Ignoring the wide eyes from both his lieutenants, Roy decided he didn't want waste any time explaining or pretending he didn't know what was happening, his right arm wrapped around her waist, his left arm going up her back and into her hair, pulling her in tight against him. He hadn't realised exactly how worried he'd been until this moment.
"Where-?"
"It was a shit show Roy." Ed cut him off, mumbling into his neck. "I thought it was just going to be smash and grab, i did all the pre-shit looking around like you wanted but fuckers were watching from other buildings. When i broke in to grab the guy there was suddenly people everywhere. They locked me up, disconnected my leg... " Ed shifted in his arms as if the memory made her uncomfortable. "Took me a whole damn day to get out of there and get my leg back. Had to re-recon the stupid place. Start all over again with the planning. Plus i think i got a concussion on the way out so now i can't sleep even after not sleeping last night in that stupid cell…"
Her voice drifted off and Roy realised he'd been gently rubbing her hip where his hand was resting. He snapped out of it. That definitely wasn't going to keep her awake.
Ed appeared to misinterpret the lack of touch, "Don't worry jackass, i got the guy. He's in hold up."
Roy sighed, "Yes. THAT was what i was worried about."
He looked up at his two lieutenants for help.
Havoc took his chance, "Sir?"
And Hawkeye at the same time, "How long have you-?"
He glared, of course Riza already knew. "She told me five years ago when she turned 18. Didn't want me to put her in any illegal situations that might have more consequences for an adult than a youth. I'm guessing you knew longer?"
Hawkeye chose not to answer but at least looked sufficiently contrite.
"How long has this-?" Havoc whirled his hand in the air to indicate Ed's current location.
Mustang's gaze switched to Jean and glared, the silently implied age discrepancy was offensive. He had made sure to keep a distance as soon as he'd learned her secret and Ed had made her own decisions without his interference. Hell, he hadn't even considered her as a prospective date until she'd asked him to dinner in late spring.
"She's 23." He let the sentence hang and Havoc swallowed a lump in his throat. "Three months. So now, if you're quite done with the questioning can you maybe help me get Ed to the medic?"
Ed made muffled sounds of protest and Roy shushed her. "I'll carry you but you still have to go."
"I hate hospitals."
He hesitated. "Ed." then slow blinked in annoyance. "Are you telling me that we need to go to a full hospital and that the medic here is insufficient for your injuries?"
The silence hung until Mustang swore. "Why did i think you would be less impulsive after we started dating?"
He felt her shrug, "Beats me."
His eye twitched, "I bet they did. Which, don't think i didn't notice you skipped over in your abbreviated narrative." He returned his attention to the two lieutenants. "Could you bring the car around. Please." It wasn't really a request and they hurried out of the room as Roy started the complicated process of standing up with Ed glued to him.
"No." Ed's grip tightened on him.
"Ed, we have to get you to the hospital."
"I know. But just, can you just not move for a moment? I need a hug. That whole thing … it sucked."
Roy settled back into his chair, pulling Ed higher up on his chest. 'Sucked' was probably the understatement of the century.
"Alright. Two minutes, then I really do have to get you some professional help."
Ed must have heard the intonation on 'professional' because despite the smile he could feel on his neck she poked him in the back, "Shut up."
