Nick realized he should have seen it coming.

He had interfered and changed a number of things since coming through the time portal. It would make sense that some events could end up happening sooner than expected.

One of those events was Adalind's mother arriving in Portland.

Knowing everything he did about Catherine Schade, thanks to the previous timeline, Nick knew to not only be suspicious, but to also be on his guard.

She was a superficial woman who never really cared about her daughter. A horrible mother who rejected her own child the very moment that child was no longer what she expected.

In this timeline, she was irate to discover her daughter in an intimate relationship with a grimm.

Nick had a strong feeling who was to blame for Catherine Schade arriving in Portland, Sean Renard.

Grimm

Catherine Schade made it very obvious that if Adalind continued to see Nick, the mother would disown her daughter.

Adalind was not feeling inclined to listen to her mother. She never once seemed interested in knowing how Nick treated Adalind. All Catherine cared about was the fact that Nick was a grimm. And quite certainly that Nick didn't have money or a job that would gain him lots of money.

Adalind knew her mother to be eternally superficial. And thought it was possible that had Nick been able to become wealthy, Catherine might have given him a chance.

But Nick was neither wealthy or in a position of power. In Catherine's mind, Nick would never have the influence that would gain him loyalty and would never command legions to do his bidding.

"Grimm's are not known for their ambition." Catherine warned her daughter. "They're grunts. They used to follow the orders of the royals. Now they're little more than vigilantes. They don't get paid for chopping off the heads of wesen. Do you really think you would be alright with always making more money than your man?"

"Money isn't everything, mother. And Nick is a well respected detective. Long before he became a grimm, he was very good at solving cases."

Catherine scoffed. "Well respected will only get one so far. Hexenbiest are meant to align themselves with power."

"That hasn't always worked out well for us, mom. Sean's own mother chose a king as her lover, and ended up being hunted by that king's wife. She didn't get to become queen, and her son is not held in high standing by the royals. They want him dead. They have been trying to kill him since he was a child. Sean can't even step foot in all of Europe without being in danger."

"We are going to change that. Sean will take his place on the throne when he either convinces enough wesen to usurp the royal families, or when he finds something that will prove he will be the best choice to inherit the throne from his father."

"That might never happen. And all the while, I'm risking my life for a man who cares nothing for me. All for the chance of what? For the possibility that he might reward my hard work? For the chance that even if I get to remain by his side, the very slim chance he would make me his queen, I may have to endure him having multiple lovers?"

"You would have wealth and the very finest of anything. Even if he doesn't choose you as his queen, you would still have the luxuries every hexenbiest desires."

"The only luxury I desire is someone who loves me completely and unselfishly. I want passion. I want strong arms holding me and never wanting to let me go. I need the kind of love Nick has shown me. Now that I've experienced what that feels like, I don't think I could ever settle for anything else."

"I thought I taught you better. Love is for fools. It makes you weak and vulnerable. You are a hexenbiest, you are meant to make men your slaves."

"Adalind's certainly made me her slave. I would do anything for her." Nick said as he entered Adalind's home.

Catherine glared at Nick. "You're the one who polluted her mind and convinced her to turn her back on her heritage!"

"I told her the truth; that she was being used by Sean Renard, that he didn't care about her, and that he would throw her away once she was of no use to him."

"How could you possibly know those things? The last I checked, grimm's weren't oracles. They can't see the future."

With Nick's ever expressive face, he couldn't hide his knowing smirk. Seeing it only caused Catherine to glare at him more.

"You need to stay away from my daughter!"

A shadow seemed to fall over Nick's face. His expression went from amused to cold and serious. A glimpse of the ancient predator he was known to be emerged and Catherine senses she could be in great danger.

"How about we let Adalind decide what she wants? She is just as brilliant as she is beautiful. She can figure out for herself where she would be happiest. But if you and Renard think to try to take her away from me by force, be prepared for battle."

For the first time in her life, Adalind saw fear grip her mother, causing the older hexenbiest to woge.

Hiding her embarrassment at losing control, she excused herself with a snide comment that she would talk to her daughter when she was ready to see reason.

When they heard the door shut, Adalind sighed, her shoulders visibly slumping. Nick reached out and wrapped her in his arms, holding her tight.

"She'll never approve of us. My mother has her mind set and there's no changing it."

"Do you need her approval to be happy?" Nick was genuinely curious. It was something he realized he needed to consider.

In the other timeline, Adalind's mother was dead way before she and Nick fell in love. He wondered if maybe things had gone differently had Catherine Schade been around to give her opinion.

She lifted her head from his chest to look him in the eye. "I need you in order to be happy. I knew my mother would never approve of me being with you. She has never really cared about me or what I wanted. She was always leaving me alone to take care of myself. She's never wanted to be a part of my life before, I won't let her tell me how to live it now."

Grimm

While Nick trusted Adalind and the bond they were forging, he was still of the belief that he needed to fight for her. He needed to show her he considered her as an equal. Prove to her that he was serious about them as a couple.

He took her to The Trailer.

Grimm

Adalind gasped in wonder as she looked all around her. Centuries of grimm history was before her and she could barely decide where to explore first.

Nick had told her he had a surprise for her. That he was taking her on a unique date.

That turned out to be an understatement.

"I bet none of your other boyfriends treated you to take out and exploring a grimm's cache." Nick said cheekily.

"It is definitely a first." Adalind replied.

They ate their food and looked through some books. Nick loved the look on Adalind's face each time she found something that caught her interest. Her delight to read the perspectives of being that had always seemed so mysterious to her caused a bright smile to spread on her face and stay there, which created a constant smile on Nick's face.

When Adalind saw the journal entries about blutbaden, she asked, "Have you shown Monroe this place?"

"Not yet, I wanted you to be the first. It seemed only right."

A blush forming on her face, Adalind set down her book and reached for Nick.

The exploration of grimm history was set aside for the exploration of one another.

Grimm

Meeting the eisbiber community was another event that happened earlier than before.

Nick saw two teen boys pushing around a younger boy. He ran toward them just as they pushed the boy into the street and in the path of an oncoming car. Between adrenaline and his grimm reflexis, Nick was able to get the child out of the way in time.

"You could have gotten him killed!" Nick yelled at the older boys.

In an attempt to act tough and intimidate the older man, both boys woged, revealing that they were skalengeck.

The boy in his arms woged out of fear, revealing himself to be an eisbiber.

The skalengeck boys returned to human form and were wide eyed in fear. "Fuck! It's a grimm!" They shouted as they ran away at full speed.

The eisbiber teen also trembled in fear, but seemed too scared to run away.

In a low calming voice, Nick assured the boy he was in no danger.

"It's alright. I like eisbiber. I've always had great admiration for the work ethic most of them seem to have. Though my hexenbiest girlfriend thinks you guys are adorable."

That got a smile from the young eisbiber. And he visibly calmed down.

To make sure he remained safe from the skalengeck bullies, Nick offered to walk the boy home.

Nick was surprised to realize that the home the boy walked up to was the home Nick recognized as belonging to Bud Wurstner.

Phoebe Wurstner, Bud's wife, ran out of the door.

"I was so worried about you! What happened?"

"Two skalengeck boys jumped me. They pushed me into the road. But this nice grimm saved me."

"A grimm?!" Phoebe expressed in shock.

Nick held out his hand. "Hi, I'm Nick Burkhardt. I'm a detective with the Portland Robbery Homicide division. And as your son said, I grimm."

"And you saved my son." Phoebe Wurstner pointed out. "You're a grimm and you saved an eisbiber."

"And he said he has a hexenbiest girlfriend." The eisbiber boy announced excitedly.

Nick hadn't thought it was possible, but Phoebe's eyes got even wider.

"You really are quite extraordinary, aren't you?"

"I just believe our differences should not make us see each other as less than equals."

"You should meet my husband."

Bud Wurstner being flustered and running his sentences together was something Nick expected. Just as before, the eisbiber was so excited he could barely finish a sentence.

With obvious proof that Nick was the type of grimm to look out for innocent wesen, the eisbiber community felt more comfortable with telling him about the men who were trying to extort them.

But just as before, the troll wesen hired Reapers to try to kill Nick. Only this time they tried to attack him while he was home.

Except it wasn't his home they followed him to.

Nick wished he could have taken a picture of their faces when they found out they had broken into the home of a hexenbiest.
