It became clear that there were some unanticipated side effects to the protection spells a few days later.
Nick knew that he and his family would always be targets for danger. The coins of Zakynthos and The Staff were objects of power that anyone would easily kill to get a hold of.
There was also the problem that Nick was a grimm, though he considered himself to be compassionate and fair, wesen who either didn't know him or just wanted revenge would seek to destroy him.
And then there were the wesen who didn't like the idea of a mixed relationship. Far too many wesen would think they were justified in interfering with a relationship they deemed unfit.
A grimm and a hexenbiest were certainly at the top of that list of unwanted romantic couplings.
Whatever the reason, Adalind found herself surrounded by woged wesen in the parking lot of her law firm.
She was walking to her car when she sensed someone attempting to creep up behind her. She turned and saw several men, trying to hide who they were with their wesen form. One who was closest to her, though still several feet away, was holding a rag Adalind guessed was soaked in chloroform.
The moment she sensed a threat, Nick got an image in his head of what she was seeing.
"Adalind's in trouble." Nick announced, jumping up from his desk in the precinct bullpen.
Hank and Wu, used to the weird by this point, didn't ask any questions, they just followed after their friend.
"The parking lot of Adalind's law firm." Nick explained. "I can see what she sees."
He realized that he had been through something similar before. In the other timeline. He had seen what Adalind was seeing when Victor had her locked up in the cells in the castle. Her fear and her anguish at being tricked and betrayed connected them for a moment, probably because he was also feeling hurt, betrayed, helpless due to his powers being taken away and the woman he had loved at the time, Juliette, had suggested that he not get them back.
At the time, he had fought the connection between him and Adalind and it had caused him tremendous pain.
But he wasn't fighting it this time. He was giving into it.
And this time, there was no pain.
Nick could see Adalind was not going to allow herself to just be taken by the attacking wesen. She was a powerful hexenbiest. She was going to put up a fight.
Put up a fight she did. Adalind ripped a bumper off of a car and it quickly flew through the air, knocking down the man holding the chloroform soaked rag.
Three advanced toward her, each holding a syringe. No doubt they were filled either with a sedative or a poison.
Nick and Adalind, though miles apart, shared one concentration. Together, they focused her powers, strengthening them, causing the hands holding the syringes to bend back on their owners.
Even in woge state, the look of confusion and terror was hard to miss. The wesen had not anticipated a hexenbiest so strong. They had thought they would have been able to sneak up on her and catch her by surprise. But it was them who were surprised when her instincts proved much sharper than most other hexenbiests.
She knew how to read the situation and knew which opponents to take out and when.
Just like a grimm.
The screeching of tires signaled the arrival of the police.
Nick was out of the car and by Adalind's side in an instant. Hank and Wu pulled out their guns and aimed them at the woged wesen, ordering them to put their hands up.
Some were unable to, due to being unconscious on the ground.
One assumed he would scare the human officers, snarled and growled, running toward them.
Hank shot him before he could advance more than five feet.
Wu shot another who was trying to sneak around and attack from behind.
Two large men, holding bats with nails in them, lunged at Nick. He dropped, kicking the knee of one, causing him to fall to the ground and loosen his grip on his weapon. Nick took the weapon and used it on the other wesen, swinging it upward and hitting him in the face. And then turned and swung at the first, knocking them both out.
Adalind was kept busy by making sure the three wesen who had been holding the syringes were still alive, but unarmed.
"Can you get a little bit of that stuff? I want to know what they planned on injecting you with." Nick asked.
Adalind nodded. She took the needle out of one vial, for safety, and wrapped the rest in a handkerchief.
While on the way to "Rescue" Adalind, Wu had called the incident in, claiming that detective Burkhardt had received a text from his girlfriend that she was in danger, and that was why they had rushed out to help.
Other officer's soon arrived and the whole scene was processed.
"I found the bumper just laying on the ground, so I hit him in the head with it." Adalind gave her statement, knowing she had to modify the truth for the humans.
"It's pretty impressive how you were able to fend them off until help arrived." One uniformed officer said.
"She's an incredible woman." Nick said proudly, wrapping his arm around her.
"They're quite the power couple." Another officer remarked.
"You don't know the half of it." Quipped Wu.
Grimm
A windowless van with duct tape, ropes, chains, and a large bottle of chloroform was parked close by. All of the men had records for various crimes, including assault.
There was no question that they intended to kidnap Adalind. But there was a question of why.
The human officer's had a lot of questions about the incident, and even tried to ask them, but when Captain Renard assured them they had done their job and that the case was closed, they listened.
Nick and his friends knew the case was far from closed, and they would be investigating it on their own, off the books.
