Now that the stress of getting married was over with, Nick and Adalind could focus on the baby that was on the way.
Nick and Adalind chose not to go on a honeymoon. Instead, they wanted to focus on their growing family.
There were still so many threats to be concerned about, and the couple wanted to ensure that they did all that they could to keep their loved ones safe.
Part of Nick wondered if Adalind was as excited about having a baby as he was, until he walked into the bedroom and saw her standing in front of the mirror. Her hands were placed over her middle, and she was smiling.
"I was just wondering what our baby will be like." Adalind explained. "Will they look more like you, or like me? Will they have powers, or will they be completely human? There's so many things to think about."
"There are a lot of things to think about. And a lot of things to plan. Now that we don't have to worry about a wedding, we can worry about our baby."
"I probably seemed crazy to you, worrying about getting married after just finding out I was pregnant. But when I realized I was pregnant, I was terrified about how I got pregnant and what it could mean for us. You're a grimm, I'm a hexenbiest. What will this baby be? It was easier to focus on something that wasn't really important, that to allow myself to think about, and panic over, the unknown future that is coming our way, and growing inside me."
"And I'm sure all of the answers will come in due time. But you shouldn't worry too much right now. You'll need all of your energy for making the baby." Nick advice. "I promise that whatever happens, I will do everything in my power for you and our kids."
In truth, he was concerned about Adalind's health. There were complications when she delivered their son. Nick worried that she might still have issues. Even though she was a hexenbiest in the current timeline and her powers had been suppressed in that other timeline.
There were still so many things to be concerned about. Nick hoped that this pregnancy with Diana wouldn't be sped up in this time line like it was in the previous one.
Nick didn't fully realize how much he hated not being there for every moment of Adalind's pregnancy with Kelly until it was time for the first official doctor's appointment.
He felt a great relief, like things were as they should be, as he stood by Adalind's side and held her hand while the doctor examined her. She gripped his hand tight and he could feel his own heart racing the first time they heard their baby's heartbeat.
Smiles were on everyone's faces when the machine gave off a strong steady beat.
"Will the two of you be wanting to know what the gender is?" The doctor asked.
Nick and Adalind exchanged a look.
"I think we're both too curious to wait." Adalind admitted.
The doctor smiled knowingly. She had encountered a large number of couples who wanted to know as soon as what they were having. Having the technology to know made the anticipation too much. Of course, most of the time, they would use the excuse that they just needed to know what to paint the nursery.
Adalind braced herself. She knew most men would prefer having a son, so she told herself not to get upset when Nick didn't seem as excited when they found out they were having a girl.
Sure they had Trubel, and Nick was completely devoted to the little girl. But didn't that mean that Nick already felt like he had a daughter? Wouldn't he be hoping for a son?
But Nick threw her for a complete loop when his extremely expressive face revealed not even a hint of disappointment. There was nothing but love, excitement, and joy to be seen.
Nick placed his hand reverently on her belly. "Our daughter." He emphasized the word "our" and Adalind wondered at the clear smug possessiveness in his tone.
Nick was excited about being there for every moment of Adalind's pregnancy. He had always been filled with a sense of loss whenever he thought about not getting to be there for his son's development. But now he got to enjoy all of those moments with the first pregnancy, as the father. Nick was thrilled to know that he wouldn't have to share anything with Sean Renard. That there wouldn't be anything to be used as a tool to manipulate Adalind into doing what she didn't want to do.
Diana was Nick's daughter. Whatever she became would be because of his and Adalind's influence, and Sean Renard would have nothing to do with it.
"I promise to be the best father a child can have." Nick whispered softly to Adalind's belly that night as the couple laid in bed. "You won't have to be afraid. I'll always be there to protect you, Diana."
"Diana?" Adalind murmured, stirring awake. "You've already named our daughter?"
"It just seemed fitting, somehow." Nick said quickly, hoping Adalind was too drowsy to sense his panic.
Adalind thought over the name for a moment. "Diana, goddess of the moon, and of the hunt. You're right, it's the perfect name for the daughter of a grimm."
Nick's smile always got larger every time Adalind said to him, "Our daughter."
Being pregnant created a rollercoaster of moods for Adalind.
One minute she wanted to hit Nick over the head with a book because she felt so miserable. The next she wanted to ride his dick until she didn't have an ounce of energy left in her.
And yet through it all, Nick remained the most patient and caring man in existence. Adalind wanted to cry at times for how sweet he was being.
In truth, no matter what mood his wife was in, Nick was thrilled to get to be there for all of it.
Every night, just as the couple was settling in to sleep, Nick would always make sure to tell Diana that he loved her, would protect her, and be the best father a child could ask for. He wanted her to get used to his voice, so she would know that he was her father.
Adalind would do her best not to cry at Nick's devotion, but it was always a losing battle.
