Chapter 6

Dinner was over and Deanna was cleaning the kitchen since Sam had cooked. She rinsed the dish towel and hung it on the sink before washing her hands and drying them. Her cell rang and she quickly pulled it from her pocket to answer it.

"Hello," she greeted the caller.

"Hi Annie, is this a suitable time to talk?" Quill asked her.

"Hold on, let me get somewhere private," she replied hurrying through the living room, by Sam and Bobby, and up the stairs to her bedroom. She closed the door and plopped down on the bed. "Okay, now I can talk."

"Good. How's your weekend going?"

"Good, what about you? Are you still getting settled?"

"Yep, the rest of our things arrived last week, and we've been unpacking everything and getting it put away."

"Sounds like fun," she giggled.

"Backbreaking is more like it," he huffed with a long sigh. " So, how long have you lived in Sioux Falls?"

"Pretty much my entire life. I was born in Louisiana and my Uncle Dee moved us up here when I was a baby. After my Mom died, Dad decided to stay so he'd have help raising me. I never got to know my Mom since I was so young when she died."

"Gee, sorry to hear about your Mom, Annie."

"Thanks. I go visit her grave every chance I get. Dad buried her in a special place not far from here. When I was little I planted wildflowers there, so she'd have flowers."

"That sounds nice. Actually, I called tonight because I was wondering if you'd like to go to the movies tomorrow afternoon. There's a new action movie out that looks good; that is if you like those type of shows."

"I love action movies. I'll have to ask Dad, but I know he'll say yes. There's one thing…" she started and stopped wondering if he would be turned off if she continued.

"He will want to meet me," Quill finished for her. "I wouldn't have it any other way,"

"You don't mind? You don't think he's being too overprotective?"

"You are his only child, what father wouldn't? I can come by a little early to meet him, would that work?"

"Yes, and you're sure you're okay with that?"

"I wouldn't ask you out if it was a problem. I like you and like spending time with you. You're a special person Annie. Say, I come by about one to pick you up?"

"Me too, that is spending time with you, and I like you too," she stammered. "I'll be ready. See you then." Deanna hung up and hugged her body in excitement that Quill had asked her on a real date. She jumped up and ran to her closet to decide what to wear. Going to the movies was very informal so she wouldn't have to really dress up. She pulled tops out and held them up to her before putting them back and picking another. Deanna didn't stop until she went through everything she had twice before finally choosing one of her favorite shirts and jeans.

Bobby walked into the living room to find Deanna moving around picking up books and moving things into the office. She didn't notice him at first and he watched her curious to what was going on with her. She was acting differently lately and wondered if it had to do with a certain someone.

"Lass, what's got you in a cleaning frenzy?" he questioned her.

"Grandpa Bobby," Deanna squeaked out jumping in surprise.

"Morning, wanna tell me what's gotten into you lately? Don't think I haven't noticed."

"A friend is coming by to pick me up and we're going to the movies this afternoon. That is if Dad says it's okay," she admitted.

"And would this friend be a boy?"

"Yeah," she said shyly. "I've got to clean the living room up so there won't be any awkward questions. I know Dad will want to meet him."

"I'm going to go fix some coffee and breakfast; you go on and finish what you're doing."

"Thanks Grandpa Bobby," Deanna smiled warmly. She picked up the stack of books and moved them into Bobby's office. Deanna got the vacuum from the closet and plugged it in so she could vacuum the floor, stairs, foyer, and couch.

"What's all the noise," Dean grumbled a short time later as he stopped in front of Deanna after coming down the stairs glaring at her for disturbing his sleep.

"Cleaning up some Uncle Dee," Deanna told him as she vacuumed around him and butted his feet when he didn't move. "Do you mind?"

"Whatever," Dean grunted rolling his eyes toward the ceiling before heading into the kitchen for coffee.

As Deanna was finishing, Sam came down the stairs and looked her way. He glanced around the living room, noticing it looked cleaner than the day before and there were things missing.

"Dad, Quill asked me to the movies this afternoon. He's coming by after lunch to meet you and pick me up," Deanna explained to him as she wrapped the cord of the vacuum around the hooks. "Is that okay?"

"Who's Quill?" Dean asked looking from Sam to Deanna and back when he heard the statement.

"A guy from school. He asked me to the movies," Deanna told him.

"Who is he?"

"His name is Quill Williams. Him and his family live down the road from us on a farm. He transferred to the school about three weeks ago. We have a couple of classes together and eat lunch together. He's really nice and has been a gentleman toward me."

"And he's coming here to pick you up?" Dean questioned.

"Yes, I know you guys need to meet him before I date him."

"So, this is a date?"

"Dean, Deanna has told me about him already," Sam told his brother.

"And you didn't bother telling me?" Dean accused.

"You were still on a hunt, and I didn't think about it after you got back. It was no big deal."

"No big deal! What do we know about this guy? What are his intentions toward Ladybug? Did you run a background check on him? Did you do anything that would tell us about him? And I thought you were a good Dad."

"Uncle Dee, Quill helped me when I was attacked," Deanna tried to appease him. "He's a nice guy. Honest."

"Or maybe he's putting up a front to get you alone and god knows what he'll do!" Dean complained throwing his arm up in the air and trying not to spill his coffee since he forgot he was holding the cup.

"Easy bro, I think Deanna has good instincts about people and she would sense if he's a bad guy," Sam told him. "I trust my daughter and you should too. Hell, you trained her on how to defend herself."

Dean snorted and glared at his brother and then looked to Deanna who was looking at him with uncertainty and worry as she fidgeted. He didn't like seeing her like this.

"You're going to meet him Uncle Dee. I think you'll like him," Deanna offered. "Give him a chance, please…"

"Come on guys, let's eat some breakfast and I'll help you finish up in the living room," Sam told them as he slipped an arm around Deanna's shoulders to guide her into the kitchen. "Coming bro?" he asked Dean who was still standing there with a frown on his face.

"Yeah, yeah," Dean grunted following behind them.

Sam helped Deanna make breakfast for them and clean the kitchen. They finished getting the living room presentable for company, being sure there was nothing supernatural or odd sitting out to raise questions. Deanna threw the pillows and throw for the couch into the dryer to freshen them and get the dust out of them. When they were done, she gave the room a critical eye being sure it looked okay for Quill to visit. She did a test run going from the door to the living room looking around for any missed weapons or items that should be hidden.

"I think you've done all you can Deanna," Sam assured her.

"You're not going anywhere unless I okay him, or I can tag along with you guys," Dean noted in a firm voice.

"Dean, really?" Sam questioned looking at his brother with a frown.

"Uncle Dee, you know I love you dearly, but I'm not a kid anymore," she told him going to his side and hugging him. "I'm growing up and you have to let me."

Dean looked down at the floor and contemplated what she said. He knew he could be too protective when it came to Deanna. She was like the daughter he never had, and he loved her so much. He didn't know what he would do if something happened to her. When he found out what those asshole jocks did to her after he got back from the hunt, Castiel had to physically restrain him to stop him from going after them. He was out for blood and would have put them in the hospital.

"Will you at least meet him before passing judgement?" Deanna questioned in her wishful voice.

"Well, he's going to have to pass a few tests before I let him take you out," Dean finally conceded.

"I know, thanks Uncle Dee," Deanna sighed with relief as she wrapped her arms around his waist to tightly hug him. "I know you only want to protect me and love me, and I love you too."

"We could have Cas check him out," Sam offered knowing the angel would be able to determine if he was a bad guy.

"Good idea, Skippy could go with them all invisible and all and he'd never know."

"No, I won't be spied on by anyone, and I mean it," Deanna stated firmly. "You know I can pray if I need Cas for help. He can be there in an instant."

"Good, now that that is settled, when is he getting here?" Sam asked.

"Around one. Now that the living room is cleaned, I'm going to go shower and wash all this dust and cobwebs off me," she replied looking at the clock. "And guys, please don't grill him too much…I kind of like him and don't want you to scare him off." With that said, she headed up the stairs.

"Want me to follow them when they leave?" Dean commented as he watched Deanna leave.

"What? No! Deanna would never forgive us if we did that to her."

"Yeah, I guess you're right, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to test him and feel him out. Have we got any holy water up here?"

"Boys, I think our girl will be just fine," Bobby finally commented after he had listened to their conversations. "And yes, there's some in the cabinet in a bottle marked holy water, you can't miss it," he said rolling his eyes as he nodded toward the kitchen.

"Good," Dean replied. He headed into the kitchen to find the holy water.

"Idjit," Bobby mumbled under his breath.

Deanna looked at her reflection in the mirror and fluffed her hair again, turning her head to see if she looked okay. She added a little lip gloss as a finishing touch and smoothed down her top deciding she was as ready as she'd ever be. She had butterflies in her stomach with anticipation but tried to hide it. Deanna had only snacked at lunch, not wanting to feel too full.

Dean was sitting int the center of the couch glowering with his elbows on his knees, looking very much like a guardian gargoyle and Sam was in the overstuffed chair beside it. Bobby was in his office working, but had the door opened enough so he'd know when Deanna's date got there.

"Don't embarrass me, please," Deanna begged her father and uncle.

"We'll see," Dean mumbled under his breath as he pursed his lips.

They all looked toward the door when knocking echoed into the room.

"I'll get it," Deanna rushed hurrying to the door. She drew in a couple of slow breaths before opening the door and looking into the smiling face of Quill. "Hi."

"Hi yourself," he greeted her.

"Come on in," she told him stepping aside to let him enter. She watched closely seeing the devil's trap under the rug didn't stop him. "My Dad, uncle, and grandfather are in the living room," she whispered to him. "Be prepared."

"It'll be fine," he mumbled back squeezing her hand gently. He followed her into the living room and studied the two adults standing up and then the older one that joined them from another room.

"Dad, Uncle Dee, Grandpa Bobby, this is Quill, my friend," she introduced them. "Quill, Sam, Dean, and Bobby, my family."

"Hello, it's nice to meet everyone," Quill told them holding out his hand to shake their hands.

"Nice to meet you too," Sam greeted him as he looked him over for any signs of danger.

"Hello," Dean spoke when he shook hands with Quill holding on a little too long as he stared him down.

"Nice to meet you, young man," Bobby said.

"So," Sam started. "How are you liking the town so far?"

"It's nice," he replied glancing at Deanna for a moment. "Deanna said you like jerky, sir. We make our own and I brought you a small bag," Quill told Dean pulling a plastic bag from the bag he was holding. "My Mom makes the best baked goods, and she sent some freshly made ones for you." He handed the bag to Sam who took it to look inside.

"That's very nice of her, please thank her for us," Sam told him.

Dean opened the bag and took a sniff, marveling at the enticing aroma wafting from the bag. He looked back at Quill before speaking.

"And you made this?"

"Yes, with the help of my brothers. We do some hunting and smoke the meat or make sausage out of it."

"Interesting. Why don't you have a seat and I'll get you two something to drink," Dean told Deanna and Quill.

"Okay, but we need to leave soon to get to the theater on time," Deanna cautioned him.

Dean came back out with two glasses of water and handed them out. He stood by and watched closely as Quill sipped the water but didn't have any adverse reaction to it. He saw Sam frown at him and slightly shake his head for him to stop.

"What movie are you going to see?"

"It's an action one, Fast Nine," Quill offered.

"I've been wanting to see that," Deanna pipped up. "Good choice."

"What do you drive?" Dean questioned.

"It's an older Jeep. I share it with my brothers. When the weather is nice, I ride a Harley."

Dean growled softly and looked at Sam with disapproval and concern. He didn't want Deanna on the back of anyone's motorcycle unless he was the one driving it.

"We can discuss that later," Sam pointedly told Dean.

"Don't be concerned, I can always borrow the Jeep when Deanna and I go out," Quill offered as assurance to them. "I am a safe driver and would never do anything to put Deanna in danger."

"Or we could take my car," Deanna added.

"Are you coming straight home?" Sam asked.

"I thought we might stop and grab a soda or milkshake before bringing her home. If that's okay with you, sir, and Deanna wants to."

"It's okay, isn't it Dad? Us stopping for something to eat after the movie?"

"Sure, I don't see why not."

"We should be going," Deanna insisted standing up. "We don't want to be late for the movie."

"Watch your driving and if you need me call," Dean told Deanna before giving her a peck on the cheek. "You better take care of her."

"I will sir. I'll keep her safe."

"You two have a fun time, and enjoy the movie," Sam told them kissing Deanna on the head.

"Thanks Dad, we'll see you later." Deanna grabbed Quill's hand and drug him to the front door but allowed him to open it for her. They went out to Quill's Jeep to head into town to the movies.

Dean went to the window and looked out watching them. He watched Quill open the door for Deanna and close it when she was seated. At least he seemed to have good manners for a teenager. His parents must have raised him right.

"Stop spying on them Dean," Sam told him.

"Did you pick up any bad vibes from the guy?" Dean asked him popping a piece of jerky into his mouth. "I gotta say he does know how to make some good tasting jerky."

"No, he seems like a nice young man."

"Bobby, your thoughts?"

"I agree with Sam. He's well behaved and seems respectful of the Lass. I don't think we have anything to worry about. I'm going to go finish the books; I'll be in the office." He headed back to his office to get his work done.

"We better not or he'll be answering to me," Dean stated strongly. "What else did he bring?" he asked walking toward the kitchen to see what Sam took in there.

Sam sighed and shook his head at his brother's reactions thinking Quill was smart to appeal to Dean's like of food. He looked out the window trying to keep an open mind about letting Deanna date. He knew most girls in high school had been dating since middle school, but he was thankful Deanna didn't seem interested in that until lately. He headed into the kitchen to see what Dean was doing and to be sure he saved some of the food Quill brought for the rest of them.
