Chapter 11

The first weekend of November rolled in unseasonably warm for that time of year in Sioux Falls. Everyone was taking advantage of the nice weather to get out and do something. Deanna had decided to visit her mother's grave on Sunday and invited Quill to go with her. She wanted to tell her Mom about him. After packing a couple bottles of water, trowel, granola bars, and gloves into a backpack, she headed outside to wait for Quill to get there. She had bought a small bunch of wildflowers to put on the grave.

Dean and Bobby were in the garage working on some cars, Sam and John had gone into town to do a supply run and restock the fridge and pantry. Castiel was returning that afternoon from being away for a few days helping in Heaven. They were all going to be there for the weekend and Dean was planning a family dinner for everyone. They tried to take advantage of these times as much as possible, being together as a family.

Quill pulled up on his Harley and parked beside Deanna's car. He got off and removed his helmet before walking toward her with a smirky smile on his face.

"Hey there Annie," he mumbled stepping up on the porch and kissing Deanna.

"Hi yourself," she cooed to him. "Are you ready to take a hike?"

"I am. I'll just leave my helmet and gloves on the swing. Is that okay?"

"It is or you can leave them inside. The door's not locked."

"Nice, I'll be right back."

"I'll be in the car waiting." Deanna headed to her car while Quill put his things inside and quickly joined her. "Can you believe how nice it is today?"

"Perfect motorcycle riding weather. Maybe one day your Dad will let you go for a ride with me."

"He will, just give him some time. He's realizing I'm growing up and not his baby girl anymore."

"I understand. Fathers can be like that toward their daughters. I'm patient. I can wait. You're worth it."

"Good, I'm looking forward to that first ride, the wind in my face, the feeling of flying…Soon, very soon."

Deanna turned off the paved road onto a gravel road and heading deeper into the mountains. Where they were going was uninhabited and undeveloped. She drove as far as possible by car and pulled off onto a short side road and parked. They got out and Deanna shouldered the pack before guiding them into the woods. They walked single file down a barely noticeable path that wound its way through the trees until it ended in the small clearing where a cross marked a grave that was covered with various size rocks.

The cross was handmade of burnished metal that would stand up in the weather and had a name etched into it and three words under it, 'Loving Wife & Mother.' Curling vines that had flowers hanging from them finished it off. You could tell it had been there for a long time and marked a special place.

Deanna walked over to the grave and knelt beside it.

"I know this might seem odd, but this is concentrated ground. Dad wanted a more private place to put Mom to rest than a cemetery," she explained. "Hi Mom," Deanna whispered as she picked dead leaves from the rocks and tossed them aside before placing the wildflowers against the cross. "It's been a while, sorry about that. I brought someone with me I want you to meet." She motioned for Quill to join her before continuing. "This is Quill, my boyfriend, and don't freak out. We've been seeing each other for about two months now. I think you would like him. He's kind, sweet, and respectful of me. Dad wasn't too happy about it at first, but he finally saw I was growing up and Quill was a nice guy."

"Hi, Annie's Mom," said Quill in a soft voice. He studied the cross and saw the name 'Jess' etched into it. "I wish I could have met you, but I want you to know I love your daughter very much."

"Really?" Deanna asked. Neither had said the L word yet and she was taken by surprise.

"Yes, really. I think from the first time I saw you, you captured my heart."

"I love you too!" she cried throwing her arms around his neck and gently kissed him. "I just didn't know when to tell you or if you felt the same way."

"Why don't we clean your Mom's grave and make in nice again?"

"I think she'd like that."

They tossed the leaves and Deanna used the trowel to remove stubborn weeds growing between them. They replaced some rocks that had been displaced and tidied up around it. Quill stepped back and leaned against a tree after accepting a bottle of water from her to give her some private time with her Mom.

"Dad's doing okay. He's keeping busy with his job and helping Grandpa Bobby at the salvage yard. Uncle Dee and Grandpa John are still working the family business, but I hope Grandpa John is going to cut back. He's not that spry anymore," she giggled. "They had the Fall Festival a few weeks ago and we went, Quill and me. It was so much fun, and the fireworks were amazing. I wish you were here and could have gone with us," she sighed as tears filled her eyes. She brushed them away as her heart ached with missing her Mom. Deanna never got to know her Mom since she was killed when she was a baby.

Castiel stepped from the trees and walked toward Deanna to comfort her. He had felt her heartache and pain and knew she had gone to her Mom's grave. He usually accompanied her here and wondered why she didn't pray for him so he could come with her. Before he could get to her, a young guy stepped in front of Deanna and glared at him. They had not met yet since he was never at the salvage yard when Quill was there.

"Who are you?" Quill questioned in a warning voice as he balled his hands into fist preparing to defend Deanna.

Castiel stared hard at Quill and frowned when he realized what he was. His first instinct was to protect Deanna and bore down on Quill grabbing him around the neck and shoving him backwards against a tree, holding him in place.

"What are you doing with the child?" Castiel growled squeezing Quill's neck and cutting off his air.

Quill struggled and batted at Castiel as he tried to get a breath.

"Cas stop!" Deanna screamed at him as she ran to his side and pulled on his arm. "Let him go! You're killing him! Castiel stop!" she begged. "Don't hurt him; I love him."

Castiel broke from his trance and turned his head slowly to look at the panicked face of his charge. He saw how frightened she looked and let her words sink in. He let Quill go and pulled Deanna back from him before she could help him.

"That can't be," Castiel demanded. "Don't you know what he is?"

"His name is Quill, and he goes to school with me," Deanna replied looking to Quill who was coughing and bent over trying to breath.

"You haven't told her, have you?" Castiel stated in a hard voice. He knew what he said was true when Quill looked up with a guilty expression on his face. "Either you tell her, or I will. I will give you that choice."

"Quill, what is he talking about? What didn't you tell me?" Deanna asked as she broke away from Castiel's grasp and stumbled to him. "Tell me please."

Quill found his dropped water and sipped on it before looking up with sad eyes at Deanna. He knew this day was coming but had hoped it might be a little longer before having to tell his secret. He coughed again and rubbed his throat as he tried to speak. All that came out was a croak and raspy gurgle.

"Let me," Castiel grunted in annoyance, stepping to Quill and placing two fingers on his forehead. He quickly healed the damage he had done and glared at him with piercing blue eyes. "Now, tell her," he demanded.

"Annie," he spoke in surprise, finding the pain was gone now. Quill looked cautiously at Castiel wondering what he was before returning his gaze to Deanna, hoping she wouldn't freak out.

"Quill, go ahead… It's alright, I'll understand," she told him, begging him with her eyes.

"Annie, I was going to tell you, honestly," he started looking at her confused face. "Please don't be frightened, but I'm not a normal person. I'm not human. I'm a…I'm a werewolf," he told her hoping she would believe him and not think him nuts.

Deanna gasped in shock as her face paled and she found it hard to breath. She now realized what she was seeing inside of him was his wolf presence. She started to waver as Castiel reached out and steadied her. She wasn't afraid of him but was afraid of what her family would do. A soft sob escaped her before she could stop it. She clapped a hand over her mouth before another came out. How could this be happening? Why is the perfect guy, not so perfect?

Quill was confused by Deanna's reaction since it wasn't what he expected. He didn't see fear or uncertainty or disbelief. It was something entirely different. He saw surprise and recognition of some kind.

"Annie, do you believe me?" Quill asked cautiously. "I can explain further if you give me a chance. It's not as bad as it sounds."

"Quill, when were you bitten? How long ago? And how did you control your change? I was with you on a full moon, and it didn't happen, or if it did, I wasn't with you..." she tried to reason as she tried to make sense of it all. How could she have not known.

"Hold on," Quill started. "How do you know so much about werewolves?"

"Please, answer my questions."

"One, I wasn't bitten; I was born this way. I'm a pureblood. Two, purebloods are trained to control their change from an early age, and we don't have to do it only on the full moon. Once we've mastered our inner beast we can change when we want."

"Cas is that true? Can someone be born a werewolf?"

Castiel studied Quill for a moment before responding to her.

"He is telling the truth."

"What are you?" Quill asked Castiel but didn't get an answer.

"Oh god, I'm so dead," Deanna cried softly as she turned from Quill. "How many people have you killed?"

"What? Killed? Why would I kill anyone?" Quill gawked in shock. "We don't harm humans, nor do we eat human hearts like mutts do," he said in disgust. "Annie, my family and I are not blood thirsty monsters. We survive on animal hearts and meat. Our most sacred law is no one can kill a human to feed off. It's a death sentence for the rogue werewolf that does."

"Am I to understand that you would kill one of your own for taking a human life?" Castiel inquired.

"Yes. My family was in a small pack, living in peace and not harming anyone until murderous, single-minded hunters got too close and we had to split up to stay safe. It seems hunters don't distinguish between killer werewolves and peaceful ones. They're all savages who only see what they want to!"

"This just keeps getting worse," Deanna whined as tears leaked from her eyes. She swiped them away and shuffled away when Quill reached out to touch her. How was she going to tell him about her and her family? What would he think of her if she told him about her powers? She had planned on doing it but was going to wait and see if their relationship was going to bloom.

"Deanna, you must tell him. He has a right to know," Castiel told her looking to Quill and back at her, not sure what to do. This was more complicated than he first thought. He wasn't sure what to say to take away Deanna's pain.

"I told you my secret Annie. You can tell me yours. It won't change how I feel about you."

"It might after I tell you," she replied hanging her head and she forced air into her lungs. "My family, me included…We are hunters…"

A/N: A nice day turns upside down when Quill tells Deanna his secret. How will this affect the young lovers? How will the adults deal with the news? We will see. Thank you for coming along for the ride. I do enjoy reviews/comments. NC
