Lucas was laying on his bed as he sighed. Ness barged in, shutting the door with a large thud. Lucas sat up. "Hey, what're you doing?"
"Zelda, she's freaking out!" Lucas groaned before collapsing back down, rubbing his nose. "Hey, what's wrong?" Ness walked over to his side.
"Just a cold, I assume. I went out in the snow without protection yesterday."
"Why'd you do that, idiot?" Ness started rubbing Lucas's arm. Lucas closed his eyes. He didn't respond. Ness stood up. "Wait right here, I'm going to go get Dr. Mario." Lucas simply hummed. Ness ran off and out of the room. Lucas turned around to look at a photo of him and Ness. It was when he first joined the mansion. He reached forward and hugged the photo close to him. He loved Ness. He truly did. He was always there for him, ever since he first came to the mansion.
Today was the worst day for him to be sick. He had a fight today. It wasn't just a normal fight either, it was a fight that could've solidified his placement in the next major tournament. But….he already had a talk with Master Hand and he couldn't push the fights back so he just couldn't participate. That was what Lucas hated most. He felt like he failed at something. And he didn't want to tell Ness. He put the photo back and coughed a bit.
Soon enough, the door opened and Dr. Mario stepped in. He had food all over his white lab coat. "You could've waited until after I ate."
"CHECK HIM OUT!" Ness yelled. Dr. Mario flinched a bit before looking down at Lucas. He sighed and walked to his side.
"Alright, Lucas. How are you feeling?"
"Sick."
"Well…ok. But like symptoms."
"Uh, I have a killer headache, I feel so cold, and I have a sore throat." Dr. Mario nodded his head.
"Shirt off." Lucas did just that and Dr. Mario put on his stethoscope. He hummed a bit as Lucas coughed and he was able to hear the heartbeat. He then grabbed a thermometer and put it into his mouth. He brought it out. "Alright, you have a fever of 150 degrees."
"I-isn't that like….SUPER hot?" Ness asked.
"Well yes. But Lucas has the power of fire by nature, so his temperature is naturally on the higher side even if he doesn't use his fire. Like you, your natural body temperature is about 140 degrees, and so is his." Dr. Mario looked back at Lucas and took off his stethoscope. "All you'll need is a good day or so of rest and you should be back on your feet." Lucas nodded his head and Dr. Mario left the room. Lucas tossed his shirt against the wall.
"Well, at least you have an excuse to stay in bed all day, right?" Ness asked as he sat on the bed next to Lucas. Lucas grumbled a response. Ness raised an eyebrow. "What's wrong?" Ness grabbed Lucas's hand and rubbed it a bit.
"I-it's nothing."
"Lucas. I know when something is wrong. What is it?" Lucas stayed silent. Ness sighed softly before softly placing his head against Lucas's chest, hearing his heartbeat and his breathing. Lucas was able to control his breathing, but not his heartbeat. Ness could tell something was on his mind. Ness picked his head up and looked gently at Lucas. "Come on, babe, what's wrong?" Lucas's eyes lowered.
"I…I won't be able to participate in the tournament."
"That's what's wrong?"
"I don't want people to be disappointed in me…"
"Nonsense. Everyone has sick days, it's just part of life." Lucas still looked down, but Ness didn't expect that cheering him up would be easy. Whenever Lucas got into a bad move it'd often take a lot to get him out of it. Ness sat up and thought for a moment. He snapped his fingers and ran out of the room. Lucas didn't even look in the direction he ran toward, he was too focused on himself. He grabbed his left wrist and started rubbing it hard, causing some marks to form. Why can't I think properly? He couldn't wrap his mind around it. Whenever he would try to think of something other than the tournament, he would feel even sicker. He coughed a bit.
Sora walked into the room with an insatiable smile. "Hello there, Lucas. I heard you were sick?"
"H-how did you know?"
"Meh, word gets around. I wanted to try and help you a bit." He walked over with a cup of water and a small pouch of some weird powder. Sora poured the powder into the water and stirred it.
"Wh-what is that?"
"It's a remedy from my world that could help."
"Really? Y-you never mentioned it before." Sora shrugged.
"You can say it slipped my mind." The new concoction was purple and even seemed to have this space-like appearance to it. Sora handed it to Lucas. "Here you go." Lucas grabbed the concoction with a small smile. He drank the concoction and handed the cup back. Sora patted Lucas's head before leaving. Lucas smacked his gums as the taste of the concoction lingered in his mouth longer than he would've liked.
Ness stepped into the room. "What did Sora want?" Lucas just continued smacking his gums. "Lucas?" Lucas looked at Ness.
"Wh-what?"
"What did Sora want?"
"Sora? He visited? How did I miss him?"
"Maybe you fell asleep for a moment." Lucas shrugged. Ness walked over with a board game. "You down for a game?" Lucas looked at the game he had. It was Monopoly. Lucas smiled widely as he nodded his head. They began their game. It was going very well for a long while. Ness loved seeing Lucas smile during the game.
It was Ness's turn. He rolled the dice and moved to a property owned by Lucas. He landed on this property many times before. "Ugh, damn it. How!" Ness grabbed the money he needed to pay the rent and handed it to him. Lucas was staring at the money.
"What's this for?"
"I landed on your property." Lucas looked down at where Ness was but only noticed one other thing.
"Oh, we're playing Monopoly. Did you skip my turn?" Ness lowered his arm.
"What? No…Lucas, is your memory ok?"
"Yeah, of course."
"Which character are you?" Lucas looked at the two characters on the board. It was a car and a boat. Lucas looked from character to character. He hummed a bit before deciding to touch the boat. He was wrong. Ness sighed. "Your memory is failing, Lucas." Ness stood up and left the room to go get Dr. Mario. Lucas just watched him leave. He looked down at the game.
"Why do I have Monopoly?" Lucas kicked the game off of him and laid back down. He stared at the ceiling. He just stared and stared, not a thought in his mind. His vision started to blur. But it wasn't a normal blur, it was a purple blur. Ness entered the room once more with Dr. Mario. Dr. Mario didn't need any information to know something was wrong with Lucas. His eyes were turning purple.
"Lucas?" Dr. Mario asked. Lucas shakily looked at Master Hand. "Are you ok?"
"Who….who are you?"
"What? You just saw me today, Lucas." Lucas looked at Ness.
"N-Ness….who is he? Wh-why can't I see properly?" Ness walked over and grabbed his hand.
"It'll be ok. I promise." Dr. Mario put a hand on Ness's back.
"Something is severely wrong. I'll need to put him to sleep to properly check on him." Ness nodded his head. Dr. Mario, with a briefcase he brought out of seemingly nowhere, brought out a syringe. He grabbed some liquid with the syringe and turned toward Lucas. Lucas's eyes widened. He may not have been able to see properly, but he was still able to see that it was a syringe. His breathing picked up, his face went pale, and he lashed out, attacking Dr. Mario, sending him through the wall.
"Lucas!" Lucas wasn't acting right at all. His face showed no emotion. Ness picked the syringe up and stabbed it into Lucas's wrist, inserting the liquid. Lucas instantly fell to the ground. Dr. Mario sat up and shook his head.
"Was he always that strong?"
"No….he can't even pick Link up without his psychic powers, more or less hit someone through a wall." Dr. Mario stood up. He picked Lucas up and laid him on his bed. He scratched his head.
"Hmm, I need some of his blood so I can analyze it back at the office." He grabbed a syringe and extracted some blood. He took the syringe out and his eyes widened. His blood had a small purple tint to it.
"Jesus. Excuse me." He walked off, leaving a worried Ness to sit down next to Lucas. He grabbed Lucas's hand and rubbed it faintly.
"It's ok, Luke. You'll feel better…I promise." Lucas didn't respond. His body was lying there, seemingly lifeless. Ness was able to use his psychic powers to fix up the wall before covering Lucas with a blanket and lying next to him. He heard Lucas's harsh breathing. Ness dug his head underneath Lucas's chin and closed his eyes. They stayed like this for a while. Eventually, Lucas opened his eyes and pushed Ness off of him.
"WHAT'RE YOU DOING!" Ness sat up and looked at him in shock.
"What was that for, Lucas?"
"Why were you lying with me!?"
"Cause…L-Luke, we're…together, and you like being close to me."
"Why in God's name would I be with you?" Ness took a shocked step back.
"L-Luke…d-don't tell me you forgot about us."
"Stop calling me Luke. My name is Lucas, dammit!" Ness's heart sank. He had forgotten about their relationship. Everything they had gone through, gone. Ness clenched his hands into fists and forced binds around Lucas's hands and feet.
"Then I'll need to remind you!"
"Let me go!" Ness ran off quickly to go grab a photo album. Lucas was left in his room to struggle at the binds, but they were too strong, even for his current enhanced strength. He sat against the wall and growled before slamming his head into the wall. His mind was blank. He couldn't think of anything. His sickness had grown from a normal cold to something much much more. He tries to wrap his mind around why Ness was lying with him, but he couldn't think. All he knew was that thinking back on his made him feel slightly warm and fuzzy on the inside.
Soon enough, Ness came back into the room with a photo album. Ness sat on the bed as he looked at Lucas. "Sorry, Luke, but you need to remember."
"What did I say about calling me that!" Ness simply shook his head as he opened the photo album. He pointed at the first picture. It was of Ness and Lucas. Lucas looked nervous.
"This was the first day for you in the mansion. You were so nervous and cute. I just needed to help you." Lucas, despite being confused about being called cute, blushed at the sound of it. He stared at the picture. "Try to remember, Lucas….please."
I stepped into the mansion. I'm all by myself…Claus wasn't brought into this, Kuma wasn't…I'm all alone. I gulped as I walked through the large halls. I needed to go to the cafeteria. I really wish there was a guide here. I continued walking through the hall and when I turned the corner, I bumped into someone. GREAT! Good job Lucas. Not even properly introduced to the residents of the mansion and I've already bumped into someone. I looked up and saw….oh wonderful. I bumped into Wario. He was with some big guys. I gulped as I stood up. "S-sorry about that."
"What're you doin' here kid?" Wario asked. His voice cracked through my mind. The deep voice and growl that accompanied the question almost made me want to quit right then and there. I should've expected Smash to have such….menacing people.
"I-I-I was i-invited."
"What? You? A weak kid like you was invited? Man, the standards really have lowered huh," Bowser laughed.
"Sh-shut up. I-I-I have powers!"
"What is it, being a crybaby?" Ganondorf added on, the three of them started laughing as tears started forming in my eyes.
"Aww, look at the poor baby, gonna cry? Waaaaah waaaaaah, HAHAHA," Wario mocked. I sniffed, trying to hold in the tears. I didn't want to be caught dead, crying in front of these guys. But…it was tough. It was really tough to hold in tears, I know. As soon as a single tear escaped my eyes, I ran off. I ended up finding a bathroom. I got to the sink and let out my cries.
"T-they're right! Y-You're weak! Y-You rely on everyone to protect you! Y-you're not worthy!"
"I'm telling you guys, that girl legitimately shat her pants. It went down her leg and-" a boy said as he entered the bathroom with a phone. "Uh, I'll get to you later." He turned the phone off and walked over to me. "Hey, what's wrong?" I sniffed some more as I looked away from him. I knew him, of course. He was Ness. The Smash tournaments were broadcasted in my world, and I got to see him in action. He had a lot of similar powers to myself, and I sort of looked up to him, in a way.
"Nothing. I just…h-have allergies."
"You're new, aren't you." He asked as he crossed his arms.
"Am I that obvious?"
"Well yeah, any newcomer is pretty obvious." Ness washed his hands as he looked into the mirror. "So…why're you crying?" My eyes dropped a bit. Should I tell him? Like, should I honestly tell him? I look back into the mirror and see his honest violet eyes. I never once noticed just how….pretty they are.
"S-some guys…some big guys…th-they were…"
"Enough said. Wario and his band of bitches are known for tormenting the newcomers, despite Wario being a recent newcomer himself." Ness sat on the sink and smiled at me. "Just so you know, they all suck in the tournament, I've beaten them plenty of times." I smiled softly but looked down.
"They said I was weak…and they're right. I've relied on everyone protecting me." Ness sighed softly as he jumped off the sink.
"You wouldn't have been chosen if you were 'weak'. You're here for a reason. You have PSI, don't you?" I nodded my head. He must've been able to sense something. God, his PSI is so much stronger than mine. "Knew it. My senses are never wrong, except for when they are." He shook his head. "We both have PSI. If I'm able to do such phenomenal things, I'm sure you will be able to, if not already able to. Just gotta trust me. I'll help you train if you want." I smiled softly.
"Y-you'd do that?"
"Of course." He reached his hand out. "Name's Ness." I looked at his hand and gulped before grabbing it.
"L-Lucas." Before I could react, he pulled me in closer, wrapped an arm around my neck, and held his phone up into the air. The camera was facing us.
"Say, cheese!" He snapped a photo.
"N-Ness…T-that was a different time….I was a different person back then." Ness smiled widely, it seemed his strategy was working.
"Yeah, you were much more awkward. Yet one thing remains the same…you're still cute." Lucas gulped. Ness could tell the memories were coming back to him. He moved the page to show the next picture. It was Ness and Lucas again, but both of them were smiling. It was also obvious by looking into Lucas's eyes that he was crying a bit before the picture. "Remember this, Luke? This was after your first tournament. You lost. You took it….quite hard."
I….I couldn't believe it. My first tournament. My time to make an impression. And I failed. I failed hard. I lost in the first match. I couldn't even beat one person! I slammed into my room, crashing the door closed behind me and collapsing in on my bed. I just started crying and crying and crying. I sat up, thinking I had calmed down, and turned on the tv that was in my room. "Lucas, in his first-ever tournament, loses in the most embarrassing wa-" I tossed the controller at the tv, breaking it and going back down, crying some more.
"I hate this." There was soon a knock at the door. "Go away, Ness!" I yelled as I grabbed a pillow and put it over my head. However, I heard my door open. Ness was capable of picking locks with his PSI. He took the pillow away. "HEY!"
"Why're you crying?" he asked as he crossed his arms. I twisted and looked away from him. I heard him sigh as he grabbed my hand and forced me to look at him. "Tell me, Lucas."
"Did you not see my fight? I lost. Hands down!" Ness sat down next to me.
"You're going to cry on your first loss?"
"It was my first tournament. My first fight. And I lost. It was my chance at being known for something and I just….failed." Ness let go of my hand.
"Lucas. You're not only remembered for the first thing you do. My first few fights were a travesty. But it's how you improve that gets you known. Taking your loss, improving yourself, and showing that improved self next time. And if it's still not enough, you do more improving. You've also got to remember, these people have been in the tournaments for years upon years. I've been here for nearly a decade." I sat up and looked at him.
"You've been here for 10 years?"
"I know, I look great for my age huh?" Ness asked as he swiped his hair.
"Yeah. H-how-"
"Time is different here. I've been here for 10 years and have only really aged up 2 years." I looked down faintly and sighed.
"You really think I can get better?"
"Of course." He grabbed my hand and gently massaged my palm. It always felt nice when he did this. It felt like he cared, and I knew he did, but when I felt this it made it more apparent. He did care for me. I never doubted that. But it seemed this care was more than just care. Feelings that were too far advanced to be regular friends. "You'll be an amazing fighter, Lucas. I know that for a fact. You may not be as devilishly handsome as I am, but you've got the cute side down, so you'll be fine." I blushed wildly.
"Y-you really think I'm cute?"
"Duh. Wouldn't be saying it if I didn't mean it, silly," He said as he playfully punched my shoulder. I looked forward and sighed.
"S-sorry I'm such a cry baby."
"Don't be." Ness wrapped his arm around my neck. "You're my crybaby~." He said that, making me smile as he pulled out a phone and snapped a photo.
"I didn't want you to see me fail…that was the main reason I cried." Ness chuckled a bit as he patted Lucas's head.
"I suspected as much." Lucas looked up at him and gulped.
"C-can you undo my binds?" Ness smiled.
"I did already. A while ago." Lucas looked down and saw that his hands and legs did indeed become free. "If you want to know the final thing, then turn the page. If not, you may leave." Lucas would've definitely left earlier, but his mind was finally feeling sort of at ease. He needed to know the final thing. He carefully reached forward and turned the page. It was a picture of Ness kissing Lucas. "This day was magical. It was after a tough time for me. And you came in to help me. And our relationship changed forever."
I stood outside of Ness's door. I needed to do this. Ness was going through a hard time. His dad had been in an accident at work and ended up passing away due to it. I needed to focus my breathing in order to make myself eligible to help him. But I couldn't seem to get it right. I just needed to do it. It tried opening the door but failed. He locked it. He rarely locked his door. I just needed to use the skill I learned from Ness. I tried focusing on the doorknob and soon enough I got it open.
I stepped in and I saw him crying on his bed. I shut the door and walked closer. "Hey….Ness?"
"Go….away….please," he barked at me, but I could hear the way his voice sounded, he was crying hard. I walked closer to him and sat at the foot of his bed.
"You need someone right now. And…so I'm here. Cause I care for you, Ness." Ness rolled onto his back and looked at me. I saw his eyes. A tearful mess. His skin was as red as a tomato. "I know how you feel, Ness. And I know secluding myself didn't help me."
"You don't know how I feel, Lucas."
"I do." I looked down. "Haven't you ever wondered why I never mentioned my mom?" Ness sat up and sniffed a bit.
"I-I guess the thought has come a few times."
"She was killed. Right in front of me." Ness then placed a hand on my back.
"Lucas, I…I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sound rude…" I shook his head.
"No. This is about me helping you. Not the other way around!" Ness chuckled a bit as he rested his head against my shoulder.
"You really want to help me?"
"Of course I do. I don't like seeing you upset." I saw Ness smile as he closed his eyes.
"Then shut up. Just let me be for now. And don't move." I smiled as he cried softly against my shoulder. I was fine with being quiet, and fine with letting him be on my shoulder….but how could he expect me to not move? I wrapped my arm around his back and I saw his eyes open. "What did I say about not moving?"
"S-sorry!" I let go of his body, but he ended up grabbing my hand, wrapping it around his body, and closing his eyes. I smiled softly as I saw him. He still had tears coming down his face, but he had a smile. We stayed like that for a while. I think I lost track of time. But it didn't feel very long. I looked down at him and saw that he was asleep. I smiled as I laid him on the bed. I've felt super weird around him lately. I was always wondering why….but I finally knew why. I liked him. Liked him a lot. I wanted to spend every waking minute with him. I cared for him more than I cared for myself. Was I creepy? Probably.
I looked at him sleeping and I just couldn't resist it. I leaned down and kissed his cheek "Sleep well, Nessy."
"Hmmmm, I need true love's kiss, Luke!" Ness said, making me jump back instantly.
"Y-you're awake!"
"Nooo, not yet. I need true love's kiss!"
"A-are you saying…"
"Just do it." Ness's eyes were still closed, but it was obvious he was having fun, he had a smile on his face. I chuckled softly as I came closer and gulped.
"A-are you sure?" I didn't get a response from him. I leaned down and pecked his lips. As soon as I did, he wrapped his arms around me, twisted me around, and was now on top with a smirk.
"Gotcha~. Fell for the ole, gimme a kiss to wake me up, trick."
"Th-that's a trick?"
"Mostly." Ness leaned his head closer toward mine and touched his nose to mine. "Thank you, Luke. I've never really had any shoulder to cry on."
"A-any time Ness." I had a huge blush on my face. Ness chuckled.
"You really are cute, Luke." He leaned in and kissed me, intently. We stayed kissing for quite a while before he broke it up. "My cute Luke."
"Sh-shush." Ness giggled before bringing out his phone.
"Come on. Picture time." I sat up and he warped an arm around my neck and held the phone up. However, right before the snap, he kissed me.
Lucas stared at the photo, a smile slowly but surely creeping onto his face. He shakily looked up at Ness. "D-do you remember, Lucas? I love you."
"Who are you?"
"W-what?" Ness grew shocked, his face was of pure terror, which made Lucas laugh.
"I'm kidding Ness." He laughed some more as Ness huffed and crossed his arms.
"Asshole." Lucas stood up and hugged Ness. Ness instantly hugged back. They stayed like that for a while before Lucas sat back down.
"Sorry that I ever forgot about you."
"No worry, Lucas." He grabbed Lucas's hand and kissed his cheek. "I got you to remember, that's what matters now." Lucas looked at Ness and leaned in to kiss him, however, Ness stopped him.
"Wh-what?" Ness stood up and walked toward the door. He closed it and locked it, locking it to a point where it wouldn't even be able to be broken down. He then turned toward Lucas. "What're you planning?" Ness took off his shirt and smirked.
"Best get ready. I'm going to get rid of all that 'stress' you put me through." Lucas chuckled.
"Bring it on~."
Dr. Mario analyzed the blood and found something strange. "Hmm, what is this?" It was some small purple fuzzy balls in his blood. The fuzzy balls looked to be acting like a living organism. He grabbed some small pliers and went to grab one. He was able to grab one, noticing that it didn't get crushed by the pliers, but simply indented. He bought the organism close to his eyes, he could barely see it. But soon enough, it grew and grew. Dr. Mario jumped back, dropping the organism. "Wh-what the hell?" The organism grew some more before jumping at Dr. Mario, covering him in the purple fuzziness. The purple soon enough jumped away from Dr. Mario, and he was left there, looking at…himself. A direct copy of himself. That was when Sora entered the room and smiled.
"Morning, Dr. Mario."
"S-Sora?" Sora tossed his Keyblade at Dr. Mario's head, knocking him out.
"Take him down to the others." The fake Dr. Mario nodded his head as he grabbed the real one and started carrying him out. Sora was left to sigh. He brought out a communicator. "Sir. The test is a failure. Lucas is back to normal." There was simply some yelling before the communicator exploded. Sora dropped the remnants of the communicator. "I'll try harder next time, sir." Sora left the room, hoping that next time, he'll do his boss justice.
