Wanted to post a Valentine's Day drabble but couldn't get it to flow, then I watched ep 13 and it was everything I needed, so here you go! Full disclosure, this was inspired by a silly meme I saw in the Italian cooking Facebook group I'm in.
It was barely 5:30AM when Amanda Rollins reentered her apartment and unhooked Frannie's leash. "Good, girl. Go eat," she said as she hung the leash up on the hook.
When she heard noises coming from the kitchen, she held the box she came home with behind her back and made her way to the kitchen. "I didn't think you'd be up yet."
"The bed was lonely without you," Sonny replied, looking up from the pan of heart shaped pancakes he was making, and eyeing her suspiciously. "Where'd you go at this hour, anyways?" He asked curiously.
"Sorry I woke you," she apologized. "I took Frannie for her walk."
"Frannie never goes for a walk this early. She's more of a go for a walk at 6:30 kinda girl."
"Well, she's getting older...when she has to go, she has to go."
He made a humming sound as he turned his attention back to the pancakes on the stove.
"You never make breakfast this early," Amanda continued. "Or fancy pancakes on a weekday."
"No, but it's a special occasion."
"Is it though?" She countered, raising an eyebrow.
"I know you don't like Valentine's Day, and we agreed to keep it lowkey - nothing fancy. But I'm not sorry for still wanting to do something special for you and the girls, maybe even start a new tradition. Makin' pink heart shaped pancakes with strawberries and chocolate chips and pink smoothies before dawn is the very least I can do. And don't worry, I won't pull an Al and send a ridiculous bouquet of roses to the precinct either. That's not my style... or yours, either. I wouldn't do that to you."
Sonny knew Amanda didn't like big shows of affection in the workplace. He could probably get away with sending an average sized bouquet of assorted flowers to the precinct, but they were still trying to keep their work and home life separate, even though they did disclose, so he wasn't going to do that. He would, however, bring home sunflowers that afternoon (the florist had kindly tried to talk him into to getting a "more romantic" flower for Valentine's Day, but Sonny had made it abundantly clear to the woman that a bouquet of roses was an absolute no-go), along with everyone's favorite snacks so they could –hopefully- spend a quiet Monday night watching movies with the girls.
"But you show us and tell us every single day how much you love us," Amanda pointed out. "That means more to me than some big to-do on a made-up Hallmark holiday."
She still carried some residual guilt around with her over making them wait so long to disclose, and she really wanted to make sure he knew it had nothing to do with him. It was her own insecurities that wanted her to keep the whole relationship between them a secret. So now, she was making a conscious effort to treat his heart as carefully and with the same level of respect he always treated hers with.
"Sometimes, it's still so hard for me to believe this is real. But I want to do better. I want to tell you and show you. You deserve that."
"I know where we stand. You show me in your own way, if ya know what I mean..." he smirked at her. "Especially last night when -"
"Okay," she laughed. "I get your point. And," she lowered her voice, "there's more where that came from tonight, but that doesn't mean I didn't get you something else, either," she pulled the box from behind her back and handed it to him after he put the pancakes on a plate and turned off the burner. "I really do want to make sure you know how much you mean to me...to us. Happy Valentine's Day, Dominick."
"You know," he teased, "you say you don't like Valentine's Day and then you go out and get me something. Doesn't that make you a hypocrite?" He winked.
"Hey!" She pretended to be upset. "If that's what you think, I'll take it back, thank you very much." She reached forward for the box. "I'm sure the squad would enjoy them."
"Too late for that, Rollins." He held the box just out of her reach. "I recognize this box. You aren't getting these back without a fight."
"Just open the box, Carisi."
"A little bossy this morning, aren't we, Detective?" He said has he put the box back on the counter and opened it, revealing half a dozen cannoli and a yellow sticky note that Amanda probably snagged from his briefcase to write on this morning.
Dominick -
I CANNOLI have eyes for you.
Thank you for waiting for me.
All my love, always.
-Amanda
