Chapter 13

EPOV

As the last remains of daylight faintly streaked the sky, Jane, Felix, and I returned to Port Angeles. Since Jane and I needed a place to sleep, I located a modest inn on the outskirts of town. The motel was small, but clean. Jane complained about its lack of sophistication, but luxury wasn't a necessity at the moment.

We were all hungry, and I desperately wanted a shower...not only to wash away the long day of travel but also in hopes that the hot water would help me relax before speaking with my Father.

"I'm going out with Felix," Jane said as she eyed the interior of the outdated room with an air of distaste. "Will you be joining us?"

I rubbed the back of my neck. "No. I'll just grab something from one of the vending machines after I take a shower."

Jane arched a brow and scoffed. "Why did I even ask? We all know how much you enjoy your human comforts." Such a weakling. Why does Father indulge him so?

I ignored her insult, anxious to be rid of them both. Jane was the least of my concerns. The upcoming conversation with my Father weighed heavily on my mind.

"Ready, mia principessa?" Felix asked, lifting a stray lock of Jane's hair and giving it a playful tug.

She giggled, swatting away his hand. "Down, boy. I know what you're really hungry for, and I won't keep you waiting much longer." She glanced in my direction and smirked. Her thoughts quickly filled with images of her feasting on Felix's dick before she feasted on the blood of her prey.

I met her heated gaze with a blank stare and yawned.

Stomping her foot like an adolescent, she grasped Felix by the arm. Together, they stormed from the room, slamming the door as they exited.

"Good riddance," I muttered as I rubbed my eyes with the heels of my palms. Not wanting any surprise interruptions, I waited a few minutes to make sure they were truly gone before peeling off my shirt and dropping it to the floor as I walked toward the bathroom to turn on the shower. While the water warmed, I removed my jeans and underwear before retrieving my bag of toiletries from my duffle. As a hybrid, my skin didn't secrete any type of oil or sweat, so body odor wasn't an issue, but that didn't mean I didn't have favorite products when cleansing. In many ways, I was a creature of habit...once I found something I liked, I never understood the point in trying something new.

I stepped inside the steamy shower, and as soon as the water hit my skin, I groaned, closing my eyes. Focusing on the droning thrum of the water, I blocked out the noise from the surrounding rooms and attempted to unwind. Between the time cooped up on the airplane and Jane's endless drama, the day had been exhausting. Now, I had to deal with my father. He wasn't going to take the girl's disappearance lightly, and in all honesty, I wasn't taking it well either. Ever since discovering her missing, I felt out of balance—even more so than I had earlier on the plane. Something about Isabella Black had knocked me off kilter. I didn't understand it, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to. All I knew for certain was I needed to find her or there would be hell to pay.

Determined to relax, I cleared my mind of the day's activities and grabbed the bottle of body wash. With a heavy sigh, I scrubbed my forearms and shoulders, kneading my muscles as I washed. As I worked the soap down my torso, I felt my dick harden. Leaning my forehead against the cold tiles of the shower wall, I wondered how long it had been since I had given into my baser urges, and quickly dismissed any guilt, deciding I could benefit from the release.

I wrapped the fingers of my right hand around my cock, stroking myself until I became fully erect. Groaning, I pumped my shaft slowly, then increased the pace, as I fantasized thrusting deep inside a faceless female, tight and throbbing with the same hot need as me. Every muscle in my body strained as I continued my rhythmic motions. With clenched teeth, I stroked hard and fast, reaching toward a desperate climax. Tension crept in my balls—building like a rising crescendo—until finally, I came with a low growl, erupting all over the shower wall.

Panting, I rinsed away the sticky residue then proceeded to finish washing my body and hair. Once I was done, I dried off using one of the thin towels provided by the inn and got dressed. I picked up my discarded clothing off the floor and put them inside my bag. No longer able to ignore the rumbling of my stomach, I fished some cash from my wallet and jogged to the vending machines located outside of the motel office. After selecting a soda and chocolate bar, I returned to the room.

Settling on one of the full-sized beds, I popped open my drink and took a gulp. The candy tasted nothing like the decadent chocolate in Europe, but I managed to finish it in three bites. After delaying the inevitable as long as possible, I knew it was time to call my father, so I reached inside the pocket of my jeans and pulled out my cell.

Almost as if he had sensed my call, he answered immediately. "Son."

"Hello, Father."

"Are you calling with glad tidings?"

I ran my fingers through my still-damp hair.. "No. I'm sorry to report the opposite."

He spoke after a long beat of silence. "Elaborate."

"It was beyond my control. The girl was gone by the time we arrived."

"Gone," he repeated. His voice was eerily calm, yet cold.

"Yes, and it appears as if the vampire who was holding her was destroyed."

"I see. And do you have any indication who might have my sweet Isabella now?"

"At least two vampires...maybe more," I answered as I fidgeted nervously with a loose string hanging from the hem of my T-shirt. Speaking to my father had reduced me to behaving like an antsy child.

"I'm perplexed, Edward. Why don't you know for sure? It shouldn't be too difficult to ascertain."

"There was someone - or I should say something - else present at the location as well."

"Something?" he spat, all of his patience now gone. "Stop speaking in riddles, Son! Tell. Me. What. You. Know!" Every word emerged as a growl.

Dreading his reaction to the next piece of news, I rubbed the back of my neck and mumbled, "I believe Isabella was taken by a set of vampires and a shapeshifter."

A deafening crash reverberated through the receiver, followed by the sound of glass breaking. It didn't happen as often as Jane, but occasionally, Father experienced outbreaks of anger. I waited patiently until he returned to the line a few minutes later. "What leads you to such a conclusion? Shapeshifters and vampires don't associate with one another."

I explained the smell and the set of animal tracks I saw. "They resembled a coyote, maybe a fox."

"Wolf," he interrupted. "There is a tribe of Indians on the western coast of Quileute. My friend Carlisle Cullen had a run in with them over two hundred years ago. Go there and investigate. But remember, these creatures can be lethal to our kind. You must take extra precautions to protect your sister."

"Yes, Father."

"And Edward, I expect better news the next time we speak. Don't disappoint me again."

He hung up before I could respond.

Throwing down my phone, I stretched out on the bed and clasped my hands behind my neck to keep them from trembling. It was always the same with my father. Results. No excuses. And of course, he would hold my failure over my head for as long as possible, another way to keep me in check, make me feel inferior. Over the years, I had seen glimpses of jealousy pass through his mind. Jealousy over my gifts...my powers. When I truly understood his envy, I began hiding any new talents I acquired. My father didn't know the extent of my powers, and deep down, I feared if he knew, I would be in danger.

In danger from my own father.

Sitting up, I took a drink of my soda, grabbed my phone, and pulled up Google. A quick search showed me that the Quileute Reservation was in La Push, an hour away.

We would have to wait and go first thing in the morning. When my stomach protested loudly once again, I knew I needed something with more substance than the junk food I had eaten earlier could provide. And if I was being completely honest, if I was going to face a group of volatile shapeshifters, I was going to need to be at my sharpest. I needed to hunt.

Unlike my sister, who found satisfaction in tormenting her targets, I found no justification for prolonging my prey's suffering or the killing of innocent humans. Whenever possible, I used my gift to find victims with unsavory pasts. I discovered such a man drinking cheap whiskey in a back alley three miles from the motel. Even though he deserved much worse for his former transgressions, I quickly snapped his neck and drained him before he even realized I was there.

When I returned to the room, Jane was lying on one of the beds, wearing only a flimsy pair of panties. Felix sat in a chair in the corner of the room, pretending to scroll through his phone, but his thoughts and eyes were both centered on Jane.

"You're back." She flipped over, exposing her breasts. When she noticed the redness of my eyes, she twitched her lips. "Did my baby brother actually eat something other than takeout?"

I grimaced at the sight of her body. "Do you mind? As you said, I just ate and you're making me nauseous. Show some decency and cover yourself."

She stood up, cackling as she walked toward me. "Admit it. You love it. If you would like, we can share a bed. I'm sure Felix won't mind." She smiled at him. "I took care of him earlier, and besides, I know he likes to watch."

A shudder of disgust rippled through me as I shook my head. I pulled the cover from the bed and tossed it in her direction. "When are you going to get it? I'd rather my dick shrivel up and fall off my body than have it anywhere near you. It's never going to happen." After grabbing my duffle, I tossed my keycard on the table. "I'm going to see if another room is available." I didn't trust Jane not to molest me in my sleep. If there wasn't another room, I'd sleep in the car. "I'll talk with you both in the morning."

Without waiting for their reply, I exited the room.

The next day, I went inside the room to inform Felix and Jane about the shapeshifters and Father's desire for us to visit the reservation.. As I zeroed in on their inner musings, it was evident that neither was concerned with finding Isabella. Felix's thoughts centered around being one of the few vampires to meet an actual shapeshifter. He imagined bragging about the experience to the other guards when he returned home. Jane was practically bouncing in her seat, filled with the anticipation of trying her powers on an entire new society.

I dropped my shoulders and sighed. They were going to be more of a hindrance than a help, and I would be lucky if Jane didn't cause an entire war during our visit. With the keys to the car in my hand, I walked to the door.

"Where are you going?" Jane asked.

"I'm leaving the two of you here and going the rest of the way on my own."

Felix opened his mouth to protest, but he thought better of it as he remembered our confrontation from yesterday. Jane, however, hissed as she grabbed the bedside lamp, ripping it from the wall. "No! That's not fair!"

Observing the damage, I pinched my nose. "And this is exactly why you're not going. You have no control over your temper. I'm not arguing about this." I went outside and Jane followed after me.

"I'm calling Father. He won't be pleased when he hears about this."

"Go for it. I'll be sure to let him know you've been more concerned about screwing Felix and your brother than finding Isabella. I'm certain he'll be pleased to hear about that as well."

"I hate you!" She skewered me with an unflinching look.

"How did you know what I was thinking? I thought I was the telepath," I replied, getting inside the car.

She screamed like a banshee, slamming her fist against the vehicle, leaving a huge dent in the hood.

I laughed and jammed the car into gear, spinning the car's wheels in the loose gravel of the parking lot as I drove away.
