Chapter 18: On Our Way

School. That's my only excuse for being dormant. That all there is to it.

Disclaimer: I DO NOT own Balto or How to Train your Dragon. They both belong to their respective owners and this is just for fun, NOT for profit.

(Hiccup POV)

"So, let me get this straight." Toothless paced in the dreamscape as we go over the same thing for the 5th time. "These Losers-"

"Louts." I corrected.

"Close enough. Are not back with medicine for the town because they 'accidentally' steered right into the Nest. How can you go that far off course?"

"Well-"

"No wait. Nevermind, it's in their names. Lousy."

"Their names are the Snotlout and Spitlout."

"Same difference. It think I understand."

"Finally!"

"You want me to help you the save the enemy of my race?"

"Well when you put it that way..."

"I'm in."

"Really? That took a little longer than I thought, but easier than I thought."

"Don't get me wrong. These Louts are complete imbeciles, but this sounds too off if they're stupidly determined as you described. Besides the Spirits this, then they want you to do something about it." He stopped pacing and sighed. "It still feels a little weird to fight along a human's side, but you're not a normal human?"

"Thanks. That's definitely leaving me brimming with self-confidence."

"You've went against everything I've seen and believed about humans. Especially among Vikings, you're most intriguing."

"Toothless, really~?"

"Plus, in my current state, I can barely walk straight unless someone helps me balance my tail. Without you, I would have died as a lone wolf in the bitter cold a week ago."

"That makes a difference too. Now that we've got that covered, I need to collect some supplies."

"Alright and that Log that you mentioned before, have you tried it?"

"Yeah, but no luck. For anyone really."

"Maybe you can try it before we left."

"Really? Never thought of that." I said dripping with sarcasm.

"It wouldn't hurt."

"I'll think about it as I pack."

I saw the blue smoke swirl around us like usual as we woke-up from our dream chats. I checked Toothless foot & tail harness before climbed up helping him balance as we came out of the cave.

"I'll be at the Qugax Tanaa in an hour. I want to pray on last time before we leave. Are you able to hide in the shadows long enough?"

He huffed in my face if to say 'of course, you dolt'

"Yeah, yeah. Just don't got on the north side."

Toothless huffed as he stumbled a little but still fluent enough to not be too noticeable. I dashed through the village and was thankful Astrid was at the Arena. As I got home, I looked at the axe Dad gave me. Traditional weapons were usual saved for hunts since they were hard to make or ship so far north. It especially doesn't help that anyone outside the Wolves' territory don't believe our problem is as big as it seems. I shook my head from getting off track and strapped my specialty club to my belt instead. What made my club special was that it was made from a wolf jaw bone that I found while troll hunting years ago. While most would sharpen it into a machete the Gothi recommend that I do something else, so I weld a lump steel to one end to create a club.

Realizing that I was getting off track, I grabbed a duffel and filled it with an assortment of necessities: wool clothes, a few blankets, pile of jerky, vitamins, a sleeping bag. As I slipped on my heavy blizzard jacket, I glanced at the aviator cap that was hanging next to it. I grabbed it and stuffed in my by bag before hauling off through the back alleys and out the village.

When I was back in the Qugax Tanaa, I started a fire in the pit, grabbed a mat, and chanted, "Umaagal qugax. Umaagal qugax. Umaagal qugax."

As I felt my spirit start to ascend, I was surprised to find that I wasn't the only visitor up there. Despite not seeing physical forms while up there, I could feel another presence that felt old, but not as ancient as the spirits.

"I'm not that old you, Half-Aleut pup!"

"Gothi! What- How are you even up here already? I was in the Qugax Tanaa by myself."

"I've been around long enough to know how to mediate almost anywhere. Speaking of which, a little spirit told me of what your about to do."

"Let me explain-"

"And I just wanted you to know a few things before you go."

"Wait you are okay with me going?"

"Who am I to stop a youth with a thirst for adventure. The most I can do is tell them a few things to keep them from getting themselves killed." Her presence seemed to shift a little. "Do know how I'm so fluent in spiritual endeavors?"

"Because you old?"

She jabbed my consciences to the point that it made my head hurt. "More than that! Angagixta Kayus (*1)"

"Life Strength?"

"Yes, Kayus is an energy can be found in all things with life, but Angagixta Kayus is a part of that energy that can be shifted and utilized to do many things. The wolves control of the snow, the ability to mediate to enter this spiritual plain, and even the connection between you and that Night Fury are all possible through Angagixta Kayus being bent and shaped to do what some would was impossible."

"Wait, wait, wait. You know about Toothless? And you haven't told anyone?"

"I may question what the Spirits are up to as much as I like, but I dare not go against them. Now I think it's time that you should be on your way."

"What? But I still need to pray."

"What knowledge I just gave is straight from the Spirits, that's what they would have told you from pray anyway."

"What about more info about Angagixta Kayus?"

"All I can say is the pray with your eyes open. You'll learn more from experience then you would be listening to me, now get going."

I felt her presence shove mine to the point that it plummeted back into my body. When I opened my eyes, I found that no one else was in the hut. I put the mat back and snuffed out the fire before leaving the Qugax Tanaa. As I looked around the site, I saw Toothless nose poking out of the bushes of a nearby bush. As I approached the bush I would that found that he was sniffing at them.

"You know that's not the best camouflage for you"

Toothless huffed and motioned toward the snow and lack of dark places round the site.

"Well I guess that there not many choices anyway. You didn't see anyone around else, have you?"

He nodded his headed toward the north and motioned toward the Tugamixtal Log.

"I told you that I tried that already."

Toothless only planted himself on the ground reusing to move.

"I don't even have anything to cut it with." I reached for the club that I packed earlier. "All I have is this."

When I glared at him, he only laid down and dug is claws into the snow. I looked back and forth between the Log, my club, and Toothless. I could only sigh as I looked up to the sky and wonder by the crazy wolf was so stubborn. I turned to the Log, swung my club back, and hit it with as much force as I could.

Everytime I tried or see someone try to cut this log, there was always the sound of a thud and the weapon possibility leaving a nick that disappears as soon as its created. But this time, there was a crack almost sounded like thunder as it echoed. When I looked at the log there was a clean cut that oddly enough was a couple inches lower than were everyone would usually hit. I looked at Toothless to see him on his feet just as surprised as I was. I went back to the log and rubbed my hand on the stump, feeling the woodgrain that was smoother than if it were sanded down.

I was shaken out of my daze from a nudge from my side. I turned to see Toothless holding my aviator cap in his mouth. When I grabbed it, I felt the leather of the cap and found small imprint of a haddock with "chidgix das" (*2) under it. Feeling a strange urge flowing through me, I fastened the cap on and jumped on Toothless back and we were off.

(Gobber POV)

In the shadows of trees, I was crouched and frozen still from watching Hiccup of all people cut the Tugamixtal Log in half. When Gothi came to the clinic for a noon smoke treatment, she told me to go to the Log, hide in the shadows, and don't make a sound. At first, I thought she was pranking me and was trying to lighten me up a bit, but then I remembered that she doesn't have a funny bone in her body and did what she said. Now I wasn't so upset with missing lunch.

'To think, the lad tamed a wolf. With that jet-black pelt, it could even be a Night Fury. I'm almost too impressed to be upset with running away. I wouldn't be able to catch up with him on foot with that wolf and my old dogs wouldn't keep up either.'

I stood there thinking what to do, then it hit me.

'I'll have the lass, track and follow him with her sled dogs. She's bound to have some quick enough to keep up with them.'

I quickly hobbled off to the Arena, hoping not to waste any more time.

(*1) angagixta = life
