On the ship at night, Azula was told by Lo and Li that she shouldn't travel with the royal procession if she wanted to keep the element of surprise.
"Yes. They're dead weight. To catch our prey, Zirrinni and I must be agile and nimble." Azula said.
"My father said he often worked in small teams comprised of Iroh's most elite soldiers. Perhaps we could do the same thing." Zirrinni said.
"Then it's time to visit some old friends of mine." The princess said.
The next day at a circus, a girl was standing on two fingers when Zirrinni and Azula walked to her.
"Is that possibly you, Ty Lee?" Azula asked.
"Azula!" The girl said happily then gracefully stood on her feet before prostrating before the princess then the two hugged. "It's so good to see you!"
"Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Zirrinni. Azula's told me a bit about you." The dual bender said. "Like you, Ty Lee, I come from noble blood. My father was one of the Fire Nation's top lieutenants."
"That's so cool, Rinni!" Ty Lee said, earning a raised eyebrow from the dragon rider.
"Please don't let us interrupt you." Azula said then Ty Lee went back to the ground and showed how flexible she was.
"Certainly a unique choice of lifestyles for a nobleman's daughter." Zirrinni said.
"I'm sure we weren't sent to the Royal Fire Academy for Girls by our parents to be in...places like this." Azula said as the two benders saw a platypus bear lay an egg before standing. "I was given a mission by my father and would like you to join me, Ty Lee. Zirrinni and I are hunting a traitor."
"Who?" Ty Lee asked.
"The man my father served under. Iroh." Zirrinni replied.
"I remember him! He was so funny!"
"We would be honored if you would join us." Azula said.
"I'd love to, Azula. Honestly, I would. But I'm really happy here. My aura has never been this pink!"
"I'll take your word for it." Azula said.
"I'm glad I'm not the only one who can read auras. What's mine look like?" Zirrinni asked.
Ty Lee squinted her eyes a little as she was in thought before smiling. "A nice calm green. You're really centered, Rinni!"
"Please stop calling me that." Zirrinni requested.
"I don't want you to give up the life you love to simply please me." Azula said.
Ty Lee looked shocked but then bowed in gratitude but Zirrinni wasn't convinced. In such a short time, Zirrinni had come to realize that Azula always got what she wanted and wouldn't stop until she did get what she wanted.
"But before we leave, Zirrinni and I are gonna catch your show." Azula said.
"Oh! Uh, great!" Ty Lee said.
That night, Zirrinni and Azula watched Ty Lee do a balancing act on the tightrope.
"Do you think she'll fall?" Azula asked but knew she wouldn't. Having grown up with each other, Azula knew how good Ty Lee was when it came to agility and balance.
"Of course not." The ringmaster said.
"Then how about instead of removing the net, which has been done before, we have it set on fire?"
Reluctantly, the ringmaster obliged but he, Zirrinni, and Ty Lee herself looked a bit nervous, more so when Azula ordered the circus's assortment of animals be released.
After the show, Azula and Zirrinni met up with Ty Lee.
"Incredible show tonight. How will you top this tomorrow night?" Azula asked.
"I'm afraid there won't be a show tomorrow. I've received strong hints from the universe pointing to a need to change careers. I'd like to join your mission." Ty LEe said, all with a smile on her face.
"...Azula mentioned you're a chi blocker. Think you could teach me?" Zirrinni asked.
"I'd be happy to, Rinni!"
The dual bender sighed quietly in annoyance.
The next morning, the three arrived in the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu, Azula in her palanquin while Ty Lee and Zirrinni followed closely behind. There, they walked to a girl who had some of her hair in small buns with one long strand on her left and her right reaching her chest. She bowed to Azula.
"Tell me you're here to kill me." She said before smiling softly and chuckling with the princess.
"Great to see you, Mai." Azula said.
Ty Lee jumped in and hugged her.
"You said the circus was you're calling." Mai said to the acrobat.
"Rinni and Azula called a little louder." Ty Lee replied.
Mai looked at Zirrinni. "My name's Zirrinni. Azula's mentioned you, Mai. It's nice to meet you."
"Likewise." Mai said.
"Zirrinni and I have a mission and need you both." Azula said.
"If it gets me out of this city, then count me in." Mai said.
"My apologies." Ukano, Mai's father and the governor of Omashu said. "You arrived in Omashu at a difficult time. Our son, Tom-Tom, was taken by the Resistance and we're meeting them at noon to trade King Bumi for him."
"I'm sorry about your son, but you couldn't have expected anything different by letting everyone leave." Azula said. "You were entrusted by my father with this city and you're making a mess here."
"I ask your forgiveness, Princess." He said as he, his wife Michi, Zirrinni, Mai, and Ty Lee prostrated before Azula.
"Mai will handle the hostage trade instead so you can't mess it up." Azula said. "And Omashu is no more. From now on, this city will be called New Ozai."
As Aang, Emi, Sokka, and Katara stood at the meeting place to make the trade, Mai, Ty Lee, Azula, and Zirrinni walked to them. Upon seeing Zirrinni, Katara had a look of shock on her face.
"Zirrinni?!" She said.
"Hello, Katara." Zirrinni said.
"You know her, Rinni?" Ty Lee asked.
Zirrinni growled. "I've told you to stop calling me that!" She said then sighed. "And to answer your question, yes. Katara and I were friends growing up until my mother got word that my father was living here in the Earth Kingdom. And now here we stand after all these years."
"What are you doing with them?" Sokka asked.
"Oh, I never explained it to you?" Zirrinni asked sarcastically. "Must've slipped my mind." She added. "I'm sure you four have heard about the girl who can bend both fire and water?"
"We have. What do you know about her?" Aang asked.
"Know about her?" Zirrinni asked then chuckled. "I AM her!" She revealed then encased one of her arms in water and the other in fire, shocking Team Avatar.
"Zirrinni, you don't wanna do this." Katara said. "We're friends."
"We were, Katara. In all the years I lived here in the Earth Kingdom with my parents, you never once wrote to me! As far as I'm concerned, you're not my friend anymore."
"Do you have the King?" Emi asked.
A metal container was lowered...and Bumi was shown to be in it.
"Do you have my brother?" Mai asked.
"Here, safe and sound." Aang said.
"I just had a thought. May I?" Azula asked.
"Of course, Princess Azula." Mai said.
"A two year old for a powerful earthbending king doesn't seem like a fair trade, does it?"
Mai looked at her brother as she thought about this. "You're right." She said.
"Mai-" Zirrinni started.
"Deal's off." Mai told them and Bumi's prison was lifted up.
"Bumi!" Aang and Emi said then ran forward. Azula shot fire at them but they jumped up and opened their gliders, revealing their master tattoos.
"The Avatar and his sister!" Zirrinni said.
"My lucky day. Zirrinni, come with me! Mai and Ty Lee, deal with their friends." Azula said then the two benders followed after Aang and Emi.
When they reached the top of the scaffolding and were above the siblings, Azula shot a ball of fire from her foot as Aang broke the chain then they travelled through the delivery system on the metal prison Bumi was in.
"Take to the skies, Zirrinni. I'll follow them through their route." Azula said.
"Got it." Zirrinni said then put her middle and index fingers into her mouth and let out a loud whistle. A loud roar responded and Zirrinni used her firebending to launch herself into the air before she landed in the saddle then kept pace with Azula. Echo soon let out a growl and Zirrinni saw Appa, Aang's bison flying to Aang, his sister, and Bumi. Aang and Emi tried to land Bumi in Appa's saddle but overshot the giant animal.
"Not to loud to cause damage, girl!" Zirrinni advised. Echo understood and let out a sonic blast that disoriented the bison, who ducked down underneath then headbutted Echo's stomach, causing the dragon to groan. When Zirrinni noticed Azula had stopped, she turned her head forward. "Forget the bison, girl! LEt's pick up Azula then head back to Mai and Ty Lee.
Echo gave a brief growl of acknowledgement then flew to the princess, who used firebending to launch herself up and land in the saddle behind Zirrinni. The three then headed back to Mai and Ty Lee.
"So, it's your brother and uncle were tracking?" Mai asked, having been filled in by Zirrinni about Azula's mission.
"I bet it'll be interesting to see Zuko again, Mai?" Ty Lee teased and Mai hid a smirk from them.
"It's no longer just Zuko and Iroh. Now, we have a third target." Azula said.
"Our deal still applies, right Azula?" Zirrinni asked, still in the saddle on her dragon.
"Yes. I promised you I'd get your father pardoned and I will, Zirrinni."
After returning Tom-Tom to his parents that night, Aang, Emi, Sokka, and Katara left Omashu. In Appa's saddle, Emi looked at Katara. "You okay?" She asked.
"...I didn't even know she'd left. I had a hunch when I'd stopped seeing her around the village, but..." Katara said.
"Zirrinni was like the sister we never had. Katara was the first person to learn Zirrinni was a waterbender. But how is she a firebender too?" Sokka asked.
"No clue. But if she's as good as I think she is, we may have our hands full." Aang said as they continued to fly.
