Chapter 17
Adam's POV
"Henry? HENRY!" I yelled at him and then I quickly skated over to him, and he was not waking up. I yelled at him a couple of more times and then the tears started to come out of my eyes. I killed him; I killed my best duck friend. I quickly scooped Henry up and ran up to the house in skates as fast as I could. I didn't care if I was going to ruin my blades or not, Henry needed help. Now! "Hold on Henry, Hold on we are going to get you some help," I said to him as I climbed up the back wooden steps two at a time.
I rushed into the backdoor, "Help, help somebody Help us," I yelled.
"Adam skates," said Nick. I told the guys that I could skate again if I followed the rules.
Mike rushed over to me and said, "Calm down, Adam what happened?"
"Henry was playing hockey with me, and I accidentally hit him with a puck. Oh my God he's dead," I said.
"Ok, calm down Adam we will call Dr. Sullivan, the vet. Dr. Sullivan will get Henry taken care of," Mike said.
Mike ran off to the office and I sunk down into a chair cradling Henry in my arms. One of the boys ran down to the lake to get my shoes and stuff. Dr. Sullivan said to bring Henry down to the office right away, That meant that we had to take a few of the guys with us to the vet. Dr. Binford came back to the house to do the supervision. Luckily, he lived on the property with us but in a different building. As Mike was driving us down to the vet I had tears in my eyes as I said, "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry," repeatedly to Henry.
Once we arrived at Dr. Sullivan's office, he took Henry from my arms and took him to an examination room after the explanation of what happened. I had sunk down in the waiting room/front office area, and cradled my head in my hands, as I cried. It was at least 30 minutes before we heard.
"QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!" Henry said as he waddled out of the examination room at the vets.
"Henry!" I said as I quickly got up and squatted down next to him. "Is he okay?" I asked Dr. Sullivan.
"Yeah, he will be fine, he has a concussion, so it would probably be wise to keep him in the house for a few days. Just to keep an eye on him, I am going to give you some drugs for the pain, but he will be fine," said Dr. Sullivan.
After we got the instructions from Dr. Sullivan I asked Mike, "Can he stay in my room?"
"Sure Adam, I don't see why not," Mike said.
We stopped at Walmart to get the supplies that we needed for Henry to stay in the house with us, a cage, a couple of bowls and some puppy pads for him to go to the bathroom on. We took Henry into the store with us, using a collar and a borrowed leash from Dr. Sullivan's office. The people that saw us just shook their heads.
I got Henry all set up in mine and Ollie's room just before dinner and he came with me everywhere I went. That first night Henry quacked loudly in protest as we were laying down trying to sleep.
"QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!" Henry said.
"Henry stop quacking and go to sleep," I said.
"QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!" Henry said.
"Adam shut the duck up, before I shut him up for you," Ollie said.
I sighed and then I quickly climbed out of bed and jumped down from my bed. I turned the light on and knelt next to Henry, "What's wrong Henry?"
"QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!" Henry said.
"Would you feel better if you slept with me in my bed?" I asked.
"QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!" Henry said.
"Okay, but you have to promise to settle down and go to sleep," I said.
"QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!" Henry said.
I gathered up Henry and took him over to my bed and placed him on my bed while I climbed up into it. "Now can I turn the light off?" Ollie asked.
"Yes Ollie," I said as I climbed between the sheets.
Once the light was off, I said, "Goodnight Henry, Goodnight Ollie."
"Quack," Henry said.
"Goodnight Adam," Ollie said.
The next morning I woke up to find a gift from Henry. "Oh Henry gross," I moaned.
"What happened?" Ollie asked.
"He pooped in my bed," I said.
"Well that's what you get when you have a duck in bed with you," Ollie said and then he started to laugh.
"Not funny Ollie," I said.
I ended up having to change and wash my sheets, Henry was not sleeping in my bed again.
I even had problems with getting Henry to take his medicine, he would always manage to spit the pill back up. "Oh come on Henry you need to take your medicine so you can get better," I said.
"Maybe you need to hide the meds in a piece of bread and then give it to him to eat," Jeremy said.
"That's a great idea," I said. I did what Jeremy said and Henry took his meds without even spitting the meds out.
A few days later, I and Henry were hanging out on the patio to the basement. I was petting him, when Henry hopped off my lap and waddles down to the lake like nothing happened.
"Henry, Henry come back," I yelled at him, but Henry would not listen to me at all.
"Adam let him go, he's probably fine," Mike said to me.
I and Mike watched Henry act like a duck, and I said, "I'll be darned."
"He's probably all better," Mike said.
