CHAPTER 11-EXPERIMENTAL CLASHES: CONCLUSION

-Village of the Lizardman Alliance, During Cocytus' Battle-

All of the lizardman chieftains stood with their maws agape at the sights they were witnessing. Even from their distance, standing atop the walls of the village, the displays of power chilled them all the way down to the tips of their tails. Even more so when Zaryusu Shasha turned to his lover Crusch Lulu, whom was beyond happy to see his return, and asked the same question, twice, only to receive the same answer each time...

"Crusch, can you identify those spells?"

"No, I can't. I... I don't know! I don't know anything anymore!"

"..."

None of the gathered chieftains could blame her, and ceased looking to her for insights. Not when the possibility of their ancestors actually answering their calls for help seemed to have been answered. Albeit unintentionally. Indeed, what else could be used to explain the god-like powers and abilities of these strange, blue-colored lizardmen who were holding their own against a mighty warrior like Cocytus, which answered to the King of Death itself?(A/N:CH.8-9)

The battle continued, showing them powers and abilities that beggared belief on both sides. Of course, while all gathered were silent in awe, shock, and fear, a single jovial voice boisterously spoke up in an attempt to light the mood...

"Ah, you know, we outta be thankin' that 'Great One' Ainz Ooal Gown. Hah! If he didn't already show off what he could do, I think I'd be pissin' myself right now."

"..."

All eyes turned to Zenberu Gugu as he grinned like an idiot, and all at once, the chieftains could only laugh at his crude joke.

"Very true. Big fool." Kyuku Zuzu, Chieftain of the Razor Tail Tribe said in amusement.

"Aaah... Why must you always be like this?" Crusch Lulu admonished while shaking her head, though still smiling at his antics.

"Huh. Heh-heh-heh. Of course. Only someone with your personality could act like this, in this kind of situation. Especially someone who hasn't realized the pain of being married." Zaryusu's older brother Shasuryu Shasha chimed in with dry amusement.

"Hah! Waddya talkin' about? Your wife an' I get along great! Hahahah!" Zenberu boisterously replied.

"..."

There was a flat stare from Shasuryu as a growl rumbled in his throat at the comment his fellow chieftain levied in jest. Zenberu simply grinned at the reaction as Zaryusu shook his head and stepped in.

"Be at peace older brother. They only spoke once by chance after your spar with him."

"Hah! Only Zenburu of Dragon Tusk would try to start another fight in the middle of all of this." Sukyu Juju, Chieftain of the Small Fang Tribe humorously commented with a laugh.

"Heheh. True, but at least we're no longer frozen from these truly unbelievable events. Thank you, my friend. Only you could have done that." Zaryusu said in an appreciative tone and head-bow.

"Huh? Don't know what yur' talkin' about. I'm just being myself." Zenberu dismissively said as he awkwardly scratched the back of his head.

The other chieftains smiled warmly at his antics, seeing through his act for what it was; his efforts to lighten the mood and get all those present focused and clear-headed. Indeed, they were witnessing a battle of near mythical proportions. It would not do for them to be in the throes of shock and fear. Especially if their ancestors had truly deemed them worthy of their assistance. They could not afford to show them such unsightly displays.

*BOOOOM!*

Everyone present was suddenly shaken and rendered speechless by the next incredible feat; a giant ball of earth, stone, and water being formed into the sky. Even more shocking for them, the nearby undead army that they considered to have stepped out of legends, was drawn in and crushed like insects. All in the village were slacked jawed at the sight of a newly formed, glowing planetoid that formed and floated in the sky. Even the previously jovial Zenberu was rendered silent at the sight.

Minutes felt like hours as they gazed up with vacant stares, unable to grasp how such a thing was possible. Truly, what other way could they describe it other than "god-like". They were only shaken out of their stupor when the planetoid slowly lowered itself to ground-level and then crumbled.

The ground quaked underfoot as the chieftains nearly lost their footing and fell from the top of the walls. Still, it was enough to wake them from their stupor as the rest of the lizardman peoples present began to panic. This forced Shasuryu to step forward and bellow at the top of his lungs to calm them.

"DO NOT PANIC! Everyone! Hear me! By some miracle, our ancestors have answered our calls and prayers, and are fighting for US! Do not panic and show such a disgraceful side of yourselves! No matter what happens, keep your heads held high, and shout to the very heavens above in praise and support of the ancestors who've come to us in out final hour of need!"

Whatever murmurs of discontent that threatened to start were quelled by the passionate and fierce voice of Shasuryu. Then almost all at once, the united tribes of lizardmen roared in solidarity and support of the ancestors. Come what may, they would not be afraid. Satisfied that his words had the desired effect, Shasuryu turned back to his fellow chieftains, only to see a grinning Zenberu looking at him.

"Oi, oi. You know how ta' give speeches dont'cha? Even I got the chills there."

"Huh. I very well couldn't leave it to you." Shasuryu said with dry amusement.

"Hah! Right. That's..."

"Everyone! Look! They've disappeared!" Sukyu Juju interrupted, pointing towards the devastated area.

All the chieftains followed the direction Sukyu pointed, and indeed they saw nothing but the devastation left in the wake of such a climactic battle. Truly, it left them at a loss, but with this, did it not mean that the battle was over, and they were now safe? No, it was far too early to assume such a thing. For now, as Shasuryu bellowed out orders to scouts to organize an investigation, they could only hope it was finally over.

...

Less than 30-minutes had passed after the battle seemed to have ended. While the lizardmen seemed to relax a bit, they kept their guard up, having learned their previous lessons of lowering their guard. Sentries kept watch all along their walls as the chieftains convened in the center of an open area of the village.

"What have the scouts found?" Shasuryu firmly asked.

"No sign of the enemy. Anywhere. And what we thought was their main stronghold has been utterly annihilated. Forest and all." Sukyu Juju replied with a neutral tone.

"..."

Everyone was rendered speechless. Perhaps they shouldn't have been surprised at this point, but anyone that could calmly take in these recent string of events either led an extremely dangerous and interesting life, or was completely insane. Either way, their notions of "common sense" had been consistently dashed at every turn.

"Then... can we consider this to finally be over?" Crusch Lulu hesitantly asked the group, to which her love Zaryusu cautiously replied.

"No, I think it's far too early to say that."

"Hm. Agreed." Kyuku Zuzu stoically added.

"I also agree. Then let us..."

Shasuryu's words were cut off as a commotion within the village walls erupted. Turning their collective attentions to towards the source, they were shocked to see the blue-scaled lizardman that had intervened in the chieftains' fight with Cocytus, standing idly in the middle of the village with his arms folded. This stunned them, since they had never let their guards down. So how had he managed to slip by them without being seen or heard?

"B-Brother... That's..." Zaryusu stuttered.

"Yes, I know." Shasuryu knowingly replied.

As the brothers quietly exchanged words, the mysterious blue lizardman calmly surveyed his immediate surroundings, as the rest of the villagers gawked at his form. Some regarded him with equal parts awe, curiosity, and fear, but this did not move him in the slightest. His attention then went to the gathered chieftains as he began to slowly walk towards them.

The chieftains discretely waved to the others a signal to relax as their savior stopped a couple of meters away from them, and again folded his arms. They didn't say a word as he appeared to size them up with a glance of those purple, ripple-patterned eyes that made them shiver. Then with a deep, commanding voice, he addressed them.

"Leaders of the Tribes, hear me. As per the terms set before the fight with Cocytus, the Undead King that threatened your peoples shall never again disturb you."

An echoing cacophony of "ohs" and "ahs", and celebratory shouts filled the air at the news, and while the chieftains remained silent, they were no less moved and relieved. Still, noting the stoic countenance of their newest surprise visitor, they waved to their kin for silence which was promptly obeyed.

Shasuryu then glanced at his fellow chieftains, silently asking for their approval to represent them once again. To which they each agreed with a nod. He stepped forward two steps, before bowing once with his hand over his heart, speaking with reverence in his voice.

"On behalf of our people, I thank you for coming to us in our hour of need..."

There was a brief pause, as Shasuryu glanced up at their newest arrival. Picking up on the meaning of it, their savior nodded, and then calmly and stoically spoke.

"Call me, Chidō. And I already know who you and the rest are."

"A-Ah, yes... Of course. Um, forgive me, but there is something we must know. Are you truly of our revered ancestors?"

"..."

There was a brief moment of silence from Chidō as all within the village remained deathly quiet, eager to hear his response. His countenance remained unmoved as he then answered in a neutral tone.

"I am what you needed when your ceremony called for aid, and what you will continue to need going forward. I am of yours, yet not. More than this, you need not know. And in the end, does it really matter?"

"..."

Once again, utter silence bathed the area, as Chidō's non-answer had every lizardman deep in thought. Why would the origins of their savior really matter? They were saved after all, and now the tribes were bound in unity and solidarity for the first time in their memory. Of course, there were those who frowned on Chidō's cryptic way of speaking, but could not voice it, since all understood the weight and gravity of the collective life-debt owed by all present.

Before anyone could give voice to these thoughts, the one called "Chidō" walked past Shasuryu and the other chieftains in a calm, yet remarkably imposing manner. As he stopped, he did a blindingly quick series of hand gestures no one could recognize. Then suddenly, a platform of stone and earth rose from the ground, lifting Chidō 2-meters into the air. There was equal parts awe and fright at this display since to them, it was as if nature itself was at his command. Then with a commanding air about him, Chidō spoke so that the whole village could hear him.

"People of the lizardfolk tribes, hear me! Though this test of your survival and determination has ended, another test awaits you..."

Though some thought it strange how he kept emphasizing the word "test", they were too enraptured by his presence to give it due consideration. There was a strength, power, and most importantly of all, a worldly experience in his voice that bespoke of having lived through harsh trials that resonated with them on an instinctive level. As they themselves lived their lives next to the potential of death every day.

"For too long the tribes have suffered due to their disunity and petty differences. Now, in an odd turn of events, thanks to that Undead King that coveted your peoples and lands, all of the tribes are as one for the first time in generations! You must not let the sacrifices of those that made this happen be in vain! For now, and until the end of time, you are all now one tribe. One unit. One family. One that loves, believes, cherishes, and fights to protect the village and its ilk, as this and the generations that will follow you shall do..."

As Chidō continued his speech, none could refute his words. Indeed, the spirit of camaraderie and unity that had eluded them for so long was now a reality. Despite the sacrifices and the destruction, they could not deny that the monster that assailed them made this possible. A fire within each of them burned as his words resonated with them all.

Zaryusu Shasha and Crusch Lulu gazed into each other's eyes as their tails coiled around each other, feeling the same thing and more as Chidō continued to speak in that powerful tone that had such a mesmerizing effect on them.

"...Those that have left this mortal coil have now passed that torch onto you. If you let it, it can become an unyielding flame that gives you the strength to continue fighting against all odds, building your willpower, and strength of character. This embodies all of the hopes and dreams of the previous generation, being passed to the next. The promise of a better tomorrow for ALL lizardfolk, in this village hidden in the lakes and leaves..."

All among the lizardmen, regardless of age, gender, and former tribe affiliations felt a burning heat flow through them from their chests, down to the tips of their tails. A newfound purpose and way of life and thinking was now being born within their hearts and minds that they could feel in the depths of their souls, as Chidō reached the crescendo of his speech.

"Make your choice! Will you let that 'Will of Fire' that has been lit burn out and die into fading embers, or will you cultivate it into a blaze that will shine light and warmth upon the lizardfolk, for now and forever more? With your ancestors as your witnesses, give voice to your answer!"

'"OOOOOOORAH!"'

A thunderous chorus of passionate cries was the collective reply of all present as they raised their fists up high to his words. They all felt their hearts beat as one as that "Will of Fire" now burned within each and every one of them. A passion, a drive, and a mania that could move them as one took root in that moment. A sight that was as inspiring as it was terrifying. A sight that formed a whimsical smile over Chidō's, and by extension, Madara's face.

In the past, Madara mocked Hashirama's views as naïve, but in the last moments in his old world, he bitterly realized that his old rival and friend was right. The irony pierced him as he realized that he was now preaching the very views and philosophy that he once mocked. The lizardmen and their plight stirred up memories and emotions that he thought long lost, and as he reflected on the fact that he was now preaching the "Will of Fire", he mused on this in self-deprecation.

'Hashirama, if you were here, would you be laughing at me, or would you have that ridiculous smile of pride on your face? Hm. Perhaps it would be a bit of both...'

Madara surprised himself with the amount of passion he had put into his words. Was this what it meant to speak from the heart? He honestly couldn't say. He wanted to mock himself for the words that left his proxy's mouth, and yet it was effective in rallying the tribes in a way that took even him by surprise. For someone who mastered the art of manipulating people by taking advantage of the darkness in their hearts, he was surprised for being apt at the opposite.

He could not say that he embraced the concept of the "Will of Fire", despite being so familiar with it, and having borne witness to its success. However, given the culture of the lizardmen, and how the situation with them had developed, he felt it was the best course of action to not only get them back on their feet, but to one day see if they could help in his aims.

Meanwhile, the lizardman chieftains, despite maintaining a respectful silence, were just as awed and moved by the scene as everyone else. They nodded in approval and agreement as their peoples' reactions to the words of this mysterious lizardman. Though some doubts still lingered, it was not enough to disrupt the burning drive they felt, and to see their peoples prosper like never before.

"Oi, oi. He's a good speaker. Much better than you." Zenberu Gugu jovially commented as he lightly jostled Shasuryu Shasha with his left elbow.

"Hah. You're one to talk." Shasuryu Shasha replied with a flat tone and side-long glare.

"Oya... I never said I was any good either. But never mind about that. What do we do now?"

Just as Zenberu asked that question, the blue-scaled lizardman that called itself "Chidō" turned to them, and the raised platform on which he spoke lowered back down. After which, he stepped off and crossed his arms and spoke in a stoic manner.

"Now, we shall begin."

...

During this time, a vastly different gathering was taking place within the throne room of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, as the Overlord of Death sat upon the [Throne of Kings]. It was a [World Class Item] he and the guild won back when they reformed from the clan, "Nine's Own Goal", in the guild of "Ainz Ooal Gown". The name in which he now bore himself. He waited for 30-minutes before calling this meeting so he could get his bearings and process recent events.

As he held the the [Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown] in his left hand that symbolized all of their hard work, his crimson eyes surveyed the kneeling forms of all of the guardians of Nazarick, minus that of the mindless Gargantua, and the radiant beauty of Albedo to his right side, who likewise held a staff of her own, the W.C.I. [Ginnungagap]. It was as much a symbol of her status as the Guardian Overseer as it was a part of her panoply, since it could change its form.

"Raise your heads and look upon the form of the Supreme One, Ainz Ooal Gown-sama." Albedo commanded in a firm tone that was still as slick and sweet as honey.

The gathered Floors Guardians all rose at once upon her command without hesitation, and then Albedo turned and bowed to her seated master as she spoke with reverence in her voice.

"Ainz-sama, the Guardians of Nazarick are ready to receive your words."

"Umu... Thank you, Albedo." The Overlord replied in a neutral tone as he regally rose and lowered his right hand.

Albedo silently accepted his words of thanks, despite the conflict within her that she skillfully kept hidden. She maintained a "mask" that not even Demiurge could see through, much to his consternation. Inwardly she was furious, since the plans of her master and beloved had been utterly ruined. (A/N:CH.9)

Failure of this magnitude could not stand! However, she reined in these feelings, due to Ainz's lack of anger, and her duties as the Overseer. Whatever actions she would take, would be decided after this gathering that Ainz himself had called for. As for the Overlord himself, his inner condition likewise contradicted his calm, exterior façade as he thought to himself.

'Gaaah~! This is like job interview! Everyone's looking to me like I have all the answers, but I'm still scrambling to make sense out of everything myself! I called for this meeting without even thinking, because I felt that after all the Guardians went through, Cocytus especially, some kind of venue for them to get things off their chests might be necessary. It also might help to piece together all the information gathered recently. At least, that's what I hope... Oh, no. Why do the Guardians have to look at me with those sparkly, expectant eyes? Ah~ah. Calm down, Satoru. Just think of it as one of those business meetings you've had so many times before, and... Ah. The passive kicked in.'

As always, Ainz was thankful for when his [Emotion Inhibitor] kicked in during these situations. Now free to think clearly, he would address the relevant issues in order, and work his way from there. First, he would start with the Guardian of the 8th-Floor, Victim. The NPC in question essentially had to look after Nazarick's security in their absence, and Ainz was not going to start without expressing his gratitude.

"Firstly, Victim. You have my thanks for keeping watch while I and your peers were away."

The floating angel fetus rose and humbly bowed, as it dutifully spoke.

"Oh, I am unworthy of such thanks, Ainz-sama. It is the nature of my existence to be of use to the Supreme Beings."

"Umu. Regardless, you have my graditute, Victim. If there is ever anything that you wish, do not hesitate to ask of it." Ainz replied in a warm manner.

His words flustered the angelic fetus, who clearly had no idea how to respond to this, while the other Guardians were likewise flustered for differing reasons. After a few seconds of hesitation from Victim, he contritely spoke.

"I-I am unworthy of such a gift from Ainz-sama, but if that is what Ainz-sama wishes, then I will obey."

Ainz resisted the urge to sigh at the NPCs words. It was an attitude he had seen before, and while he expected it, a part of him grew mentally weary at how it made things more difficult than they needed to be. When it came to rulership, he had no confidence he was handling each NPC and situation correctly. However, he still had an image to maintain, and so he pushed past those feelings as he spoke in a dignified tone.

"Umu. Then let it be so, Victim. Remember, I appreciate your efforts for Nazarick, and I believe in the fair distribution of rewards and punishments where they are needed."

"I hear and obey, Ainz-sama."

While it was not the answer Ainz wanted, he decided to let it pass. He felt that continuing that topic would result in an endless cycle of "no, no, no", and like a waterwheel, they'd end up right where they began. He briefly took his mind off the frustration he felt at that quirk as he then mused on Victim's manner of speech.

During the time that Victim was first introduced to the Guardians, he had ordered a certain experiment to be conducted. The angel fetus supposedly spoke in a language called "Ancient Enochian", and despite not understanding his words, they could somehow comprehend his meaning. Given the rules and nature of this new world they were in that allowed for foreign languages to be translated, it seemed an odd contradiction.

Given that, Ainz had Victim try to speak to the few surviving members of the Sunlight Scripture that were still being held for healing "experiments". Despite the terror at the rather grotesque sight of a floating fetus, it was determined that they could not understand a single thing from him. In contrast, the outsiders "Hamsuke", and the dryad Pinison Pol Perlia that Ainz brought into Nazarick as new servants had little issues in understanding Victim.

From this, Demiurge concluded that there must be some kind of integrated translating magic within Nazarick itself that allowed "allied targets" to understand each other. Much like how an identifiable "aura" is ascribed to each denizen within Nazarick. So even if their spoken language is somehow not automatically translated by this new world's strange nature, understanding each other posed no issue, so long as they were on the "same side".

While the "aura" part came as a surprise to Ainz, he had to admit that despite Demiurge's rather uncomfortable praises, the only reason Ainz wanted those tests done in the first place, was because at the time, he simply wanted a distraction from his anxiety over the situation with that man called "Madara" that he encountered in E-Rantel. (A/N:CH.2)

Setting those idle thoughts aside, he then turned to Cocytus, who seemed to shrink at his sight. Ainz then spoke up in a powerful and surprisingly regal tone that took even himself off-guard.

"Now, hear me well, my Guardians. As I said before, I do not hold Cocytus responsible for his defeat at the hands of those mysterious lizardmen, and any one of one would have lost when faced with such an unknown like that... Cocytus!"

"Yes! Ainz-sama!" Cocytus resolutely replied, despite being shaken at being called out.

"All is forgiven. There will be no punishment, for you did the best you could. Not even your creator and my friend and comrade Warrior Takemikazuchi would have asked or expected for more. Don't let it weigh on your mind anymore. What you must do now is to learn from this experience, and use it to ensure future success." Ainz said in a warm and sympathetic tone that shocked and enthralled the NPCs present.

It was not a lie. As someone who lost PVP bouts with some surprising regularity in YGGDRASIL, Ainz could sympathize with what Cocytus must be feeling now. However, he always made sure that "round-2" would be a different story altogether.

As he looked over the faces of the Guardians, that same awe that he saw earlier intensified as they all seemed to glow in his eyes. While he wanted to believe it was a trick of the light, Ainz couldn't help but feel that their ridiculous levels of admiration for him was somehow manifesting itself. He peered at Albedo to his side, and once again felt the urge to run away from that rather lustful smile she wore that made him shudder.

Clearing his nonexistent throat, he pushed on ahead as he rose the volume of his voice to gain their attention.

"Now then! I want you all to stand. I now declare this meeting an open venue so that all can share and learn from this experience."

"Kufufufufu..."

As they obeyed his command, a subtle, cunning chuckle from Demiurge then drew everyone's attention. Even Albedo seemed to smile at this. Meanwhile, Ainz felt decidedly uncomfortable with the situation as he then addressed the Arch-Devil.

"Demiurge. If you have noticed something, then you must share whatever you have noticed with everyone else."

"Ah, my apologies, Ainz-sama. It is just that I could not help but be reminded of when we had confronted that mindless tree monster Zy'tl Q'ae, when you tried to teach our unworthy selves lessons in teamwork, and I could not help but be in awe of your foresight. Especially now that we have witnessed a native of this world stand and win against Cocytus."

"Ah... Hm. That's right Demiurge. I'm glad that you noticed." Ainz said, somehow managing to conceal how taken aback he was.

"Oh, there's no need to be humble, my lord. After all, only through your wisdom could a supposed failure be turned into an opportunity to teach us."

'Aaah... So that's what he's getting at. Like what I did with Cocytus the first time.' Ainz mused to himself in realization before speaking.

"Umu. Indeed, Demiurge. Now then Cocytus, in your own words, tell us why you think you lost?"

Lowering his head in thought, the Vermin Lord of Ice thought back to his battle, going over every action, every maneuver, and every ability that he and his foes used. Then there was the lay of the land and the conditions set for their duel. As before with his failed campaign against the lizardmen, he was thankful for not only the experience to learn from his mistakes, but the fact that his defeat would not stain Nazarick, or disappoint his master so much that they would leave him. A thought that terrified them all to no end.

Still, Cocytus pushed such thoughts aside. Their master had already shown that was not the case, and it would be an insult to doubt the Supreme One. Especially now that he had orders to accomplish. He thought on it in silence, as he mulled on his previous experience for a few moments before responding.

"If. I. May. Be. So. Bold. Ainz-sama. The. Conditions. We. Gave. To. The. Lizardman. Did. Not. Account. For. The. Possibility. Of. Lizardmen. Of. That. Caliber. Appearing. In. The. End. I. Was. Outnumbered. Faced. With. A. Skilled. Foe. Of. Unknown. And. Strange. Abilities. They. Showed. Outstanding. Coordination. And. Teamwork. That. Far. Outclassed. Your. Guardians. When. We. Faced. That. Tree. Monster. Despite. Their. Lower. Levels. I. Could. Tell. They. Were. Much. More. Experienced. Than. I. And. Used. My. Own. Strengths. Against. Me... Hmm..."

As Cocytus stoically spoke, most of the other Guardians of Nazarick, Albedo especially, bristled as some of his words. Only Demiurge and Ainz were the picture of calm as they intently listened, with Ainz waving them to remain silent. He could not help but agree with the Knight of Niflheim's words.

Indeed, they themselves introduced a few unfavorable factors, well before the fight began, and the coordination and teamwork they displayed was peerless. Truly, the only times he had ever seen such displays was during YGGDRASIL's height, when he and his friends faced off against some of the best Players the servers had to offer, and sometimes lost. Especially if Touch-Me was not around. The [World Champion] of Álfheimr proved the deciding factor in many fights.

Just then, a cunning smile washed over Demiurge's face as he pushed up his glasses. Noticing this in his reminiscing, Ainz addressed the Arch-Devil in a neutral tone.

"Demiurge, if you had noticed something, then by all means, share it with your fellow Guardians. I have declared this an open forum to benefit all present, after all."

"Ah, my apologies, my lord. After having time to reflect on recent events, and hearing Cocytus' words, I believe that there was more to their teamwork and coordination than meets the eye."

"Oh? Do explain, Demiurge." Ainz instructed with piqued interest, leaning in with his head leaning on his right fist.

"Consider..." Demiurge analytically began with a raised finger.

"Did it not seem odd that during the entire course of the fight, whenever Cocytus had skillfully cornered those strange lizardmen, that they could somehow still react to oncoming danger, despite being caught in their blindspots?"

Everyone present hummed at that information. Even Ainz became pensive as he recalled that particular detail.

'Ah, he's right. There were a few times I thought Cocytus would've had the upper-hand, only for those strange lizardmen to pull a reversal out from nowhere...'

Ainz's thoughts were interrupted as the other Guardians erupted in idle chatter.

"Yeah! I noticed that too~! Like when they kept summoning those strange beasts with the same eyes as them. They kept covering for them and each other too without even looking." Aura groused in confusion.

"Y-Yeah. I noticed that t-too." Mare timidly agreed.

"Oya~? But isn't that normal?" Shalltear asked in confusion, only for Demiurge to sigh wearily at the thoughtless query.

"Shalltear, while there are levels of connection between a summoner and the creatures they summon, they are normally not quick enough, nor precise enough to respond in the manner that we witnessed. Furthermore, there were those strange eyes. Cocytus explained to us before this meeting how they seemed to 'see through' him at times. The fact that both the summons and the summoner possessed them is too odd a coincidence. I posit that they were actually a special trait that somehow 'linked' the bearers of such features together, thus allowing them to 'share' their sight. Whether they are the result of some spell, or some sort of [Talent] is unclear, but the available information supports the supposition."

As the NPCs showered Demiurge with awed/envious "Ohs" and "Ahs", Ainz could not help but be impressed by the demon's insight. He had pieced together so much from so little. Even after he allowed the Guardians a brief respite to talk and exchange information with each other, he still came to a conclusion that he missed. Not that he was surprised. He IS one of the top three most intelligent NPCs, as well as...

"Well done, Demiurge! As expected of Nazarick's defensive commander." Ainz said in a happy tone, expressing his felicitations without reserve.

"You are too kind, my lord. Surely, you must have noticed it too, and merely wished to see who among us would point it out." Demiurge humbly stated with a bow.

Ainz fought the urge to facepalm and sigh at Demiurge's words, and a certain weariness of his NPCs having such expectations of him once again began to weight on him. With Cocytus nearly paying the price for his oversights, the Overlord Player saw this as an opportunity to let go of some of those burdens, and be truthful about it. A feeling that was actually quite liberating as he spoke with an honest, mirthful laugh and pleased tone.

"Hahahahaha... Not so, Demiurge. As I have stated before, even I will miss things and make mistakes. No one can account for everything. Especially those unknowns as the lizardmen. Now, what else did you notice about those lizardmen?"

The NPCs were frankly shocked and taken aback by Ainz's admission. Though the sudden shift from that into questioning Demiurge gave them no time to mull as the Arch-Devil smoothly shifted with the mood of the conversation.

"Yes, my lord. Another interesting facet to note is the fact that each of those strange lizardmen used only one ability type, despite each of them being rated as level-90 beings. No other spells, [Skills], or [Martial Arts] are utilized, no matter how the situation developed. It is my conjecture that whatever ability they used to 'share' their sight, also imposes some sort of limitation upon the users."

'Oooh! I noticed that too! If Demiurge is right, then a powerful ability like that would carry some sort of penalty, wouldn't it...?' Ainz mentally noted, before his thoughts were interrupted by Shalltear's bell-like voice.

"Oooh~! That's right! I was wondering why they weren't doing more~!" Shalltear exclaimed in realization.

Ainz lightly chuckled at the sight of the loli-vampire, as the image of the figurative "light-bulb" going off above her head popped into his. A scene that would have been rather cute, if Aura's mocking voice did not cut in.

"Oh, well at this.~ Miss Fake-Tits can rub two thoughts together when she puts her mind to it."

"Hah?! Want to say that again you flat-chested shorty?!"

"Oh, sure! You're a..."

*CLANG!*

Before the two NPCs could continue their argumentative banter, Cocytus rammed the end of his halberd, [Decapitation Fang] upon the floor. It sharply rang throughout the throne room, as he voice boomed towards the short female NPC.

"BE. SILENT! YOU. DISGRACE. BEFORE. THE. SUPREME. ONE. WHO. CALLED. THIS MEETING!"

The realization/reminder helped to sober up both Aura and Shalltear, who furiously bowed and apologized for their actions. In a display that shocked all present, Ainz accepted and waved it off, who seemed oddly... happy? Then there was another odd shift in his demeanor before an annoyed "Che!" escaped his mouth, before clearing his throat and once more speaking.

"Thank you for the expert analysis, Demiurge. It has greatly helped to clear things up. Now then, Cocytus. With this information in hand, how would you counter those lizardmen, should you encounter them again?"

There was a moment's pause from the Vermin Lord NPC as he expelled a mist of frost from his mouth, before stoically speaking up again.

"I. Would. Find. Some. Way. To. Isolate. Each. Of. Them. From. The. Others. I. Would. Also. Find. A. Way. To. Block. Their. Sight. Since. Their. Defenses. Were. Weak. It. Would. Only. Be. A. Matter. Of. Time. Before. They. Fell. Of. Course. Plans. Would. Need. To. Be. Made. Just. In. Case. They. Had. Other. Abilities. At. Their. Disposal. From. Being. Separated."

A thoughtful, pleased hum could be heard through Ainz's teeth as he tapped his chin. He was happy to see Cocytus make such great strides in thoughts and decision making.

'Eh. I hated seeing Cocytus get hurt like that. I should have made better preparations in case something happened, but perhaps it was worth it in the end. His thinking has improved, thanks to gaining actual experience in both leading and fighting. Hm... Still, maybe I can use this...'

"Excellent, Cocytus. You've done well in improving yourself. Continue to do so. And the rest of you would do well to learn from this as well, my Guardians. These events, and what happened to Shalltear, have now more than ever made it clear that there are forces in this world that can challenge Nazarick. Going forward, we need to ensure that our moves are made with the greatest of care. Despite our strength, attacking other civilizations without a 'just cause', would rally too many enemies against us. A point my old comrade Punitto Moe-san would have made in the past..."

Ainz paused as he stroked his bony face, watching the attentive gazes of his NPCs as they mentally noted and hanged on every word he said. Despite some discomfort it brought him, he pressed on, since the topic was much more important.

"...The experiment with the lizardmen was a success in demonstrating this. As primitive and as isolated as they were, by attacking them without provocation as we did, a force rose up to challenge our actions. Granted, we could have crushed them if a few more Floor or even Area Guardians were sent out to assist Cocytus, but what of others that were connected to them? In the end, we still did not find out where they came from, and if there were more like them. We could have well exposed Nazarick's existence to the rest of this world, before we were ready to make our move."

'"Ooooh~!"'

As soon as Ainz completed his "lecture", the Floor Guardians broke out in a chorus of awed gasps at the foresight and wisdom of the Supreme One of Nazarick. Ainz himself felt a measure of discomfort at seeing this reaction. While what he said was the plain and simple truth as he saw it, and moreover commonsense, if they truly did not consider this before he said it, that presented a problem. One that he was thankful to address now.

'Ah~ah! In a strange way, I'm glad that those mysterious lizardmen showed up when they did. I can't have the NPCs just going around, thinking they can stomp whatever's out there without thought... Wait... Is that what happened with Shalltear? Did she blindly attack someone without care, thinking they were beneath her, and paid for it?'

Ainz leaned back into the [Throne of Kings] as the NPCs continued to talk amongst themselves, showering their master with words of praise at his "wisdom". While he gave the image of the imposing and capable master that they saw him as, internally he was a storm of conflict and confusion.

Before the second fight with the lizardmen, Demiurge broached the possibility of Shalltear's encounter with the user of the [World Class Item] as a random encounter, instead of her being a calculated target. At the time Ainz had dismissed that possibility, but now with things playing out as they did with Cocytus, his own words, mixed with Demiurge's from back then, made his mind reel from the implications.

'Could it be that the only reason Shalltear was brainwashed was because she just picked a fight with some random someones that were happening along? Have I spent this entire time being paranoid of some phantom enemy that didn't actually exist? And like what we did with those lizardman tribes, made the same mistake as Shalltear, and payed for it? Like Narberal did, when she provoked that mysterious "Madara"?'(A/N:CH.2)

All at once, Ainz felt the weight of his mistakes and past judgments play out like a movie on fast-forward in his mind, and wanted to run away as he gripped the [Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown] in his left hand. Such grievous, yet simple mistakes! But he couldn't just run away now. The Great Tomb of Nazarick that he and his friends had built was his responsibility, and until the day that they returned, and quite possibly removed him as guild-master, he would see it through.

He then rose his right hand to silence the Guardians, who dutifully awaited his word with total devotion and loyalty. He then spoke, thankful that his emotions had been quelled once again by his undead passives.

"Hear me my Guardians. I will say this once more; everyone makes mistakes. Even I. Do not make the mistake of underestimating anyone, and never act thinking that you are the superior. The reality can be far different. We managed to avoid fatal loses this time, and I want to keep it that way. Therefore, unless you are attacked, you will exercise caution in all things, and NEVER be the first one to engage. Now, are there any questions?"

There was utter silence from the NPCs as Ainz scanned the room, and felt relieved that the NPCs seemed to have understood.

"Umu... I am pleased that you understand. Now then, if there is nothing else, I declared this meeting adjourned, and I shall retire to my quarters..." Ainz said as he stood up.

He was preparing to teleport with the [Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown], when Albedo stepped forward, and contritely spoke in a soft timbre that could charm most men and women.

"Pardon me, my lord. Before you go, I was wondering about what we shall do about the lizardman village. I know the deal struck was to leave them be, but could we not keep them under surveillance, now that such powerful entities have involved themselves with them?"

"Hmm..."

A thoughtful hum vibrated Ainz's teeth as he cradled his chin. It was a good suggestion, and merely watching them would not break any of their agreements. Furthermore, they might be able to glean some additional information about those mysterious lizardmen. Feeling that her suggestion was the correct one, he turned his head and nodded in approval.

"Umu... Very well, Albedo. Continue to watch those lizardmen, and ensure no actions are taken without my approval."

"As you wish, Ainz-sama." Albedo sweetly acknowledged with a graceful bow.

With that, Ainz teleported out of the throne room, mentally exhausted and looking forward to some downtime, now more than ever.

...

"[Mokuton: Renchūka no Jutsu]!"

*BOOM!*

In that instant, two rows of three, solid wooden houses sprang from the marsh, and the tribes looked on. During the time that Nazarick was conducting its meetings, the mysterious lizardman that called itself "Chidō", had not only restored the marsh and the ruined lands, but he had also single-handedly restructured the village to where it barely resembled what it was before.

With powers that still amazed and awed them, new 10-meter high stone walls surrounded a village that was now three times the size of the previous. Not only that, their housing looked more like those finely crafted human homes that Zaryusu had seen in his times as a Traveler, and were erected in neat rows, connected by raised wooden walking platforms. Truly, their new village was barely recognizable was what it had been.

Not only that, but four new fish-farms of stone construction had also been erected, and each one filled with fish! It felt like a dream to them, but as Chidō walked towards them, he snapped out of his stupor, and wondered what other shocking act he would perform. By now he and all of the chieftains were standing around a plain wooden table, upon which Chidō laid two scrolls.

He unfurled them both opposite each other, and slammed each hand down on them. They then burst with white smoke and steam, lasting only a moment before revealing two intricately adorned books. The chieftains marveled at the gold inlay as the green one to their right bore a fantastic depiction of a majestic tree, while the red one had a depiction of a sword over a shield on its front cover. He picked both of them up in each hand before stoically speaking.

"I have done all I can to help give you all a head start in rebuilding your lives. The rest is now all up to your own efforts... Crusch Lulu!"

"Y-Yes~!" The albino lizardwoman stammered nervously, having her name suddenly called out, as Chidō continued speaking in a firm tone.

"This book is a magical item called, [Druid's Magecraft]. The lizardfolk refer to those with your abilities as a 'priest', but in truth, there are different branches of Divine Schools of [Tier Magic]. Your powers are often referred to in other lands as that of a 'druid'. This book contains pages upon pages of spells relating to the druidic arts. It has been enchanted to where you will be able to read its language once you have opened it to its opening page, but it'll work only once. So you will have to teach others what you learn from its pages. Do you accept?"

"Y-Yes! I'll gladly accept such a gift." Crusch resolutely replied as she reverently took the item with both hands.

In truth, she was rather conflicted. Why was she chosen to receive such a boon? How was she worthy of it? However, in the face of this lizardman and his godly abilities, whatever words of denial she might have had, died in her throat.

The other stunned chieftains had no time to mull of that surprising event, as Chidō then turned to Zaryusu Shasha, presenting the other book to him, and all at once his mind reeled from the implications as he maw fell open.

"This book, Zaryusu Shasha, is called the [Tome of Battle]. It is likewise enchanted to help you read its pages. It's filled with the martial teachings necessary to help strength yourself and the other warriors of this village..."

Before he could continue however, a completely flustered Zaryusu spoke up.

"P-P-Please wait! Why am I given this honor? Surely there are others..."

"Silence."

Zaryusu and the other chieftains gulped as Chidō's/Madara's voice overlapped briefly, creating a haunting echo of dual voices that sent chills down their spines. While calm, the stern timbre of the voice had power and steel in its edge that brooked no argument. All present worried that he, and by extension their ancestors, had been offended. To any lizardman, that would have been a grievous sin, and prepared themselves for the worst when Chidō once again spoke.

"Zaryusu, you were chosen to receive this book and become its teacher, simply because you are the one most suited to the task. Unlike most of your kin, you're not so bound by the old, archaic ways of thinking. You set out as a 'Traveler' in search of new knowledge that can help your tribe and to better yourself. You were the one that proposed the initial idea to the alliance of tribes while other fools bickered and argued over their next course of action, and you are the one that saw past Crusch's albinoism to recognize her for the truly wonderful female she is..."

At that last piece of acknowledgement, Crusch's snow-white face darkened a shade of pink while her tail nervously wagged. The rest of the chieftains then looked upon Zaryusu with looks of approval and acknowledgement. Indeed, if not for him, would things have worked out as well as they had? He was already hailed as a hero now, and most lizardmen barely even saw the mark on his chest anymore. Frankly, that detail mattered little anymore.

"...If you understand, take this book, and continue to serve and help the united tribes prosper into the future." Chidō sternly finished.

With renewed purpose and understanding, all of Zaryusu's doubts faded like dust in the wind, as he took the [Tome of Battle] into his hands and bowed. He then looked to the love of his like Crusch, and all it once the irony pierced them. They together would help to strengthen the tribes, and perhaps it was meant to be.

Meanwhile, Madara mused on how his choice would affect things going forward. He knew that these two were now well liked, and the tribe as a whole looked up to them as heroes. Their efforts would have the most impact as a result, and he knew that their feelings for each other helped to endear them to all others in numerous ways.

As for the books he gave them, they were the spoils that the Deep Darkness Dragon Lord had gained from his battle with the "Player of YGGDRASIL" he defeated and briefly enslaved to his will.

Moving ahead, he placed his hands on the scrolls and they each revealed another book before the scrolls turned to ash. An unexpected byproduct he had discovered of sealing away multiple magical items. Paying it no need, he looked towards the chieftains as he addressed them.

"Shasuryu Shasha. These books contain additional instructions on how to best help this village thrive. You may give them to whoever you feel is best suited to the tasks. Your brother should be able to help you in this regard, as he'll be able to read the script on their covers."

"Y-Yes... I'll make sure to choose the right people for the tasks. Thank you for all of the gifts that you have given us." Shasuryu Shasha humbly replied with a bow.

"Hmm... You are welcome. Now, it is time for me to depart. Remember my words, and I have no doubt that you lot will achieve great things. Farewell."

With that, Chidō clasped his hands together, disappearing in a buff of white smoke, and leaving the lizardman chieftains still reeling from recent events. Everything was a whirlwind, and just as they were about to settle into a frozen stupor, Zenberu Gugu's loud, boisterous voice rang out, "waking" them up.

"Oi! You lot! Don't just throw the [Great Wine Pot] into the shed! We'll need it tonight to celebrate the gifts of tha' ancestors. And you there! Don't look all slacked jawed! Get the new provisions ready! There's to be a feast tonight! Look alive!... Hm? Somethin' wrong?"

The chieftains looked upon Zenberu Gugu in stunned silence, as he acted like his usual self as if nothing had happened. Then they looked at each other and chuckled in self-deprecation. What were they doing with themselves? This was no time to be frozen in shock and awe. Something they all realized as Kyuku Zuzu's monotoned voice filtered into their ears.

"Big-fool, has point. Much work to do."

"That's right. We still have to be there for our people. Let's get things in order. Night will soon be here, and it would be a mistake to rely on these walls, no matter how sturdy, for our security. I'll get to work on our guard shifts." Sukyu Juju firmly added, as Shasuryu Shasha wearily sighed.

"Indeed. We'll worry about these gifts later. We've got a village to get into shape. Thanks Zenburu. We needed that reminder."

"Huh? Ah, I've got no idea whatcha takin' 'bout. I just wanna have a good meal ready for tonight. Hehe." Zenburu said as he smiled and scratched the back of his head.

His peers simply laughed at his antics as they collectively shook their heads, and Shasuryu firmly spoke up again.

"Well, let's get to work. There'll be much to do later. Zaryusu... Ah. We'll leave you to alone for a bit. Let's go everyone."

The rest of the chieftains left to perform their own duties and tasks chuckling, as they noticed one of the newest couples of the tribes gazing into their eyes and their tails coiling. Crusch Lulu and Zaryusu Shasha were in their own little worlds, and hoped that this one moment would last forever...

...

Back at Madara's compound, he already had placed the "Paths" into storage as he walked into Lottus' lab whilst twisting and stretching his neck. It was unexpected how draining it was to concentrate his power into a single Path in order for it to use abilities other than that of one of the Six Paths.

He could not be sure if it was due to the differing nature of this new world, but some abilities needed time and practice for him to adjust to using them here. Still, thanks to his new gear, and the knowledge he continuously gained, he felt that compensating for these differences was just a matter of time. A task that would have taken longer if not for his discovering Lottus, and finding in him a useful and devoted subordinate.

The undead in question greeted his master with a bow as he dutifully spoke.

"Milord, many remains of the fallen lizardmen had been collected by your summons, and are now in storage, as per your instructions."

"Hm. Very good, Lottus. How many were procured?" Madara plainly asked in his usual, stoci tone.

"Only a little more than two-dozen I'm afraid. The chaos of the battle left view openings with which to carry out the task without notice."

"That's fine. The tribes suffered losses of nearly 35% of their total population, but it is only natural that we wouldn't be able to collect many of them. What we have will suit my purposes well enough."

"Of course, milord... If I may, will any be used in the next phase of your experiments?" Lottus asked in curiosity.

"Indeed. It is time to know if the [Edo Tensei] will work in these lands."

"Ah, very good milord. I am brimming with curiosity at the prospects! Though, if I may, will this method not require living sacrifices?" Lottus asked in uncertainty.

"Yes, it will. However, my [Wood Clones] are already securing them as we speak. Creatures that no one will miss, and will not draw unwanted attention when they go missing."

"Ah, I see. Then on the topic milord, how goes their search for the remains of the 'Thirteen Heroes'?"

"Hmm... The information you provided was useful in narrowing down probably locations. I find it puzzling why Zuranon was interested in them, but the information they gathered will prove most interesting."

"Very good, milord. When shall we begin?" Lottus asked in an almost eager tone.

"Tomorrow. I must rest for now, and then we shall begin..."

Lottus said not another word as he bowed low once more, and Madara retired to his personal quarters. With new plans spinning, his journey into this new world continues, and what form that shall take, only he knows.

...

*A/N: Alright! I know it was a LOOONG time coming, but I finally got another Madara chapter out the door. It'll be another couple of months before I can come back to it however, since I have other things to attend to. Still, rest assured that I absolutely WILL have more chapters coming out this year. You can count on that! Until then, everyone take care, and Happy New Year!*
