CHAPTER 18-ROSES IN THE GARDEN
It was quite the beautiful day in the capital of the Re-Estize Kingdom, as guildmaster Ameillia Grann diligently worked through a stack of neatly organized papers in her office. Two open windows flanked the left and right sides of a locked oaken cabinet behind her as the fresh, cool air circulated around her office.
Combined with her favorite afternoon tea, the relaxed atmosphere did well to soothe her very stressed and frayed nerves. Truly, the amount of work for the guild continued to increase in the aftermath of the Demonic Disturbance, and with seemingly no end in sight. This multiplied her workload in turn, with her having to pull all-nighters everyday just to keep up.
Even her research and investigative personnel, who thankfully saw no casualties thanks to her maneuvering, were being taxed to the limit to accurately gauge and evaluate the quests they were receiving. Including this latest quest that came by her desk a few days ago, after those of Unity Four left for their own long-term quest in the Dragon Kingdom. Honestly, this latest one was both enigmatic, and a headache. Especially when...
*DING*DING*DING*
Suddenly, one of the seven sets of bells on the far-left of her desk rang. These were among the magic signal bells that rang whenever its attuned twin was used. Each one was colored-coded to indicate where it came from and its purpose. This one was blue, to which she let out a weary sigh as she rang it in response, and set aside most of her paperwork as she sipped her tea.
Whatever the situation was, she was not pleased with it, and after a few moments had passed, there a light knock on her office door.
"Enter."
Giving permission, the office door slowly opened as the forms of Adamantite-ranked team Blue Rose slowly filed in with their leader Lakyus at the head. With the exception of the twins and Evileye, their leader and Gagaran were in their more casual attire as they strode in, taking a quick glance at their surroundings.
The guildmaster's office held a few potted plants to offer a warm environment and to freshen the air through more natural means than with magic. They always did enjoy the more natural ambiance whenever they were called in. Other than dressers and tables for storage, there was a display on the far-right wall with a finely crafted bow of green and white.
The weapon was a magic item from her days as a Mythril-ranked adventurer, made from a mythril/white iron alloy. The latter material was a special and rare mineral highly sought after by dwarven smiths, and most often used to forge special items. No one really knew how she came to possess such an item, but they noticed some scuffs and discoloration on it, indicating recent use from participating in the recent disturbance.
After the moment of appreciating her workspace, they took seats in the five already arranged for them in a line facing her desk. Lakyus sat in the middle, with the twins to her left and right sides, Gagaran to the far-right, and Evileye to the far-left. After taking their seats, Lakyus spoke in a cordial manner.
"Good afternoon, guildmaster. I trust you are doing well?"
"Hm... As well as can be expected, given the circumstances. Although I'm surprised by the swift response to my summons. I was given to understand that you were taking some time off, since you have been working almost nonstop to revive as many of the fallen adventurers and soldiers as possible." Ameillia Grann professionally replied.
"Yes, it has been quite taxing, but I've recovered well enough to answer your call. How can we help?"
At that, Ameillia Grann took a moment to pull a sheet of paper from a folder to her immediate right. While it was instantly recognizable as a quest one might find from an Adventurer's Guild board, it was different in that the sheet was a bright vanilla-white color with blue text written in the Kingdom's script and a red stamp. They all recognized it as an Adamantite-ranked quest as the guildmaster handed it to Tina, who rose from her seat to Lakyus' left to receive it.
"The details are in the request, but to sum up, we've received tips regarding the activities of a certain cult that you lot had reported to us in Leite Village. Details are scarce, and when we sent people to the location north of Re-Blumrushur, they failed to return. Given the implications, I think you can understand why I called for you." Ameillia Grann sternly informed.
"Yes, that is indeed quite troubling..." Lakyus contemplatively mused as she cradled her chin with her right thumb and index-finger.
"Oi, isn't Re-Blumrushur north-east from here? That's like, the exact opposite direction from Leite Village." Gagaran casually chimed in.
"That doesn't mean anything. An organization will spread as far as it can, and Re-Blumrushur's area is a good place for operations. It's a prosperous mining-city falling under the demesne of that corrupt noble trash, Marquis Blumrush. Not surprising that any sort of cult is able to set-up shop there." Tina matter-of-factly informed with a blank expression.
"Hmph... Tina the blabbermouth is actually providing useful information for once." Evileye sardonically commented.
"Hey, don't underestimate the information gathering abilities of ninja." Tina countered with a frown that unintentionally looked more cute than annoyed, eliciting a snort of amusement from Gagaran.
"Ahem~! This request is rather sparse on details. Is there any additional information you can share with us, guildmaster?" Lakyus quickly interjected with a professional tone.
"I'm sorry to say, there's none to be had. So you can imagine why this quest was given an Adamantite-rank, and why I'm personally giving it to you, instead of having it posted to the board. This requires a level of discretion, and given that your team is the only one available for something like this, I wanted to brief you personally. That said, investigate the area, gather as much information as you can, and if possible, recover our missing people. Any questions?" Ameillia sternly asked as she took a sip of her tea.
"None, guildmaster. We understand the situation, and on behalf of my team, we accept." Lakyus resolutely affirmed as she neatly folded the quest sheet and handed it to Tia.
"Hm, full glad am I to hear it. How soon can you and your team depart?"
"Well, we have some preparations to conduct first, and an appointment with Princess Renner to attend, so it'll be first-light tomorrow at the earliest." Lakyus thoughtfully answered.
"..."
At the mention of Re-Estize's Third Princess, Ameillia Grann's eyes snapped from her tea to Lakyus herself. Though she gently set the porcelain cup down, the experienced adventurer team did not fail to notice the tension in her posture. Interlacing her fingers and resting them on her desk, she locked eye-contact with Blue Rose's leader as she firmly, pointedly spoke.
"Everyone but Lakyus, wait in the guildhall."
The team-members all glanced around at each other for but a moment. The seriousness in the guildmaster's tone brooked no argument as they nodded to each other in acknowledgement and quietly filed out of her office. The air hung heavy in a manner not unlike the moments preceding a duel as the pair of women starred each other down.
"Since you are the team leader, I do you the courtesy of honestly telling you this without them present; I don't like you, Lakyus. Your flagrant disregard for the guild's rules and policies has caused no end of headaches and rumormongering. As long as I was able to keep such whispers confined to the guild, I could somewhat tolerate your team's 'extracurricular' activities, but no more. Things are precarious enough, but now those same whispers have very recently reached the ears of our foreign clients. Adamantite-ranked adventurer or not, Hero of the Demonic Disturbance or not, I'll not allow it to sully the guild. You are on your last notice, Lakyus. Tread carefully."
The two women narrowed their vision towards each other in a battle of wills as they stood fast to their positions. It's not like Lakyus did not understand the guildmaster's position. As much as she wished she could have revived them all, there were simply too many she could not bring back to life from that awful night.
Much of the windfall she had gained from reviving those she could was donated to aid in the reconstruction efforts. Indeed, she was quite devoted to helping the people as much as was within her power. It was on this point that she would not compromise as she resolutely spoke.
"I am not blind, guildmaster. I understand what's happening around us very well. Unity Four recently left for the Dragon Kingdom, so it's not difficult to ascertain who you meant. As you have done me the courtesy of being honest, so too shall I return that selfsame courtesy; I will do whatever it takes to help the people of our nation, no matter the cost... I still see the bodies of the dead I could not bring back. I look at all the nameless bodies, and I think that maybe, if we had acted against Eight Fingers sooner and more vigorously, perhaps that tragedy might have been avoided."
Another moment of tense silence passed between the two willful women as Ameillia Grann clenched her jaw in place and exhaled long and hard through her nose.
"You stubborn girl... IF you truly believe that, then you are even more naïve than I thought. We cannot know for sure if acting as you suggest would have made any difference, or more likely brought an even worse tragedy. Let what happened to your team's encounter with Jaldabaoth be an important lesson, Lakyus. And take it to heart... You are NOT immune to consequence. Continue on as you have, and your end, whether on the field or in this guild, will not be a good one... That is all."
"Noted."
Lakyus stood up and gave a brief nod of courtesy before promptly leaving the guildmaster's office. Despite the mutual respect as professionals that they still held for each other, in the end, neither came to an understanding. They left as they met with the same entrenched viewpoints, and with the certainty that they would likely have this conversation again...
...
Later that same day, Blue Rose arrived at Valencia Palace for their appointment with Third Princess Renner Theiere Chardelon Ryle Vaiself, whom gingerly sat at her table with tea set up for their arrival. There was a light knock on the door and an innocent smile spread over her lips as she sweetly spoke.
"Enter, please."
With her acknowledgement, the door gently opened to reveal Lakyus and her team being let in by one of the many maids that worked in the palace. The latter bowing before excusing herself and closing the door behind as the team took their seats around the table.
"Ah, it's good to see you, Lakyus. Please, help yourselves. I already took the liberty of having tea made." Renner softly said in a friendly manner.
"Thank you, my friend. It's good to see you too." Lakyus cordially replied as she and her team partook of the tea offered.
"Hm? Is something the matter? You seem tired. I was given to understand that you've been resting." Renner innocently asked with slightly tilted head.
"Oh, don't mind her, princess. Leader's just upset the guildmaster gave her a talkin' to." Gagaran lightheartedly said with a grin.
"Hm... Muscle-head being the blabbermouth this time." Tina nonchalantly said as she sipped her tea, with her twin following suit.
"Agreed. Princess didn't need to know that."
"Oi, it's no big deal, right? She already knows about this sort of thing, so what does it matter?" Gagaran casually countered, with a weary sigh escaping Evileye as she shook her head.
"Not the point, Gagaran."
"Hmph. Quite." Lakyus said with a subtle glare levied towards her teammate, who winced at the action.
"Oh? Did the guildmaster take issue with your proffered assistance to me?" Renner asked in an understanding tone.
"I'm... afraid so. But there's no need for you to worry. It's nothing we can't handle." Lakyus reassuringly said.
"Is that so? Then I will leave it to you Lakyus.~" Renner replied with a warm smile that put the group at ease.
Lakyus took a few soothing sips of tea, grateful that her friend did not press for details. It was already difficult enough that the tension between her and the guildmaster had been building steadily over the past year due to their continued, unsanctioned work for the princess. Work that, while helping the Kingdom, hadn't remained as secret as they have tried to keep it, and did not wish to worry the princess about. Or worse, her feeling guilt for their situation.
"Now then my friend, what news did you have to share with us? Your missive was relatively light on details."
"Well, while you have been reviving as many of the fallen as possible, I have been using the resources gained from my alliance with my brother and Marquis Raeven to gather additional information on the current state of Eight Fingers. I'm sure you all will be pleased to hear that they have been hit as hard as everyone else by the recent disturbance. They still cling to the shadows, but they are so greatly weakened that they will not pose much of a threat for some time." Renner said in a reserved yet happy manner.
"Hoh~! That is good news." Lakyus replied with a smile and sparkle in her eyes.
"Indeed~! From what we've gathered, their slavery and drug trafficking operations have been all but destroyed, the lion's share of their resources were stored in the section of the capital the demons hit, the number of people they lost was significant, and despite Ampetif Cocco Doll's escape from custody, their leadership is scattered. It is truly something to rejoice in."
"Ah... Then something good came from that madness after all." Lakyus said with relief, placing her right-hand over her heart.
"If they are so weakened, isn't this the perfect opportunity to crush them once and for all?" Evileye asked in a straight tone.
"Hmph... Shorty still has a lot to learn." Tia dismissively countered with her usual blank expression, as her sister followed suit.
"Yes, she seems to not understand. It's not that simple anymore. An underground organization that's scattered to the four-winds will no longer have a central base of operations for us to track and raid. With everyone still busy with rebuilding and recovery efforts, no one will have the resources or even the will to hunt them down. It's just not feasible or practical to go on a manhunt for members of a broken criminal organization."
"Huh. So that's how it is?" Evileye said in mild disappointment, with Gagaran grinning at her reaction.
"Hah~! They've got ya' there, shorty."
"Oh, shut-up you mass of muscle."
Giggling at their reactions, Renner poured herself another cup of tea as Lakyus sighed at her team's antics, and then smiled that for the time being, they could enjoy moments like these. With Eight Fingers now a shell of its former self, it seemed all their labors were well and truly worth it.
"Ah, by the way Lakyus, now that you have rested, will you and your team be guarding that demonic item now?" Princess Renner asked in curiosity.
"Not this time, no. We'll be leaving at first-light tomorrow on a quest."
"Hm~? Well, I suppose it cannot be helped. The manpower shortage continues to be an issue for everyone, even with the Magician's and Adventurer's Guilds jointly guarding it."
"Yes. It's to the point that they even asked the Warrior-Captain's teacher to help with guarding the thing." Tina stoically chimed in as she finished her tea.
"Wait, ya' mean the former Adamantite-ranked adventurer and swordmaster, Vesture Kloff Di Laufen?" Gagaran exclaimed in surprise, with Tia stoically answering.
"Yeah, he and his disciples should be arriving tomorrow afternoon."
"H-Hold on, how in the world do you two know that?"
Lakyus asked her question, honestly quite surprised by this news, since even she was unaware of this development. To her query, the twins simply looked at each other, and then to her with blank expressions as they simultaneously and matter-of-factly replied...
'"We're ninjas. Of course, we know."'
"Hah~! You two really should learn ta' have fun in other ways than snoopin' around." Gagaran boisterously commented.
"It is fun for us." Tia replied with a shrug.
"Hoh~? Then what 'bout Climb? Where's he at 'round this day o' day?"
"Training with Brain again. And being thrown flat on his back..." Tina added with indifference, to which her sister immediately followed-up.
"...Something you'll never get to do to him."
"Hah~! Maybe, but then again, the honor o' gettin' that boy on his back belongs to the princess 'ere."
"...!"
To that final comment, Renner turned beet-red, whilst Lakyus facepalmed at her team's antics. Before she could rebuke them, Tina spoke again with an oddly amused tone, despite her face remaining blank.
"No, he's still too big for her, but maybe this can help..."
She then pulled a fine glass bottle from her hip-pouch and handed it to Renner, receiving it with equal parts curiosity and confusion. Lakyus herself was struck with bewilderment at this latest development. After all, the twins never showed any inclination towards gift-giving in the past. It was then it clicked in her mind as Renner opened the bottle, but was a second too late in the realization...
"Hm~? What's this? Ointment?" The princess said, innocently tilting her head in confusion.
"Yes. Climb's too big for you, but this herbal ointment is lightly enchanted to dull pain, increase pleasure, and ease him in..."
"Ahem~!"
Lakyus suddenly and loudly stood up as she glared down at the twins with a stern, almost incensed expression.
"That's quite enough of that you two. My apologies Renner, but I think it's time we left."
"Oh? Come on now, Lakyus. They're just expressin' their 'ppreciation to the Princess for all 'er support." Gagaran casually said with a mischievous smile.
"That's right. The Princess and Climb should explore their happiness. Their social positions be damned. You're being an enemy of love, fiendish-boss."
"Indeed. Life's too short for them to keep holding back, evil-boss."
"..."
It was then that Lakyus' glare towards the twins took on a more hardened edge, and whilst still blank-faced, for a moment they seemed to shiver in place as Lakyus' tone became decidedly more menacing.
"Tina. Tia. We. Are. Leaving... Now."
Not waiting for their reply, Lakyus turned to her friend the Third Princess and bowed slightly at the waist as she contritely spoke.
"Again, I am very sorry for the disturbance, my friend. Thank you for the tea and good news. It might be a little while before we see each other again, but do take care of yourself."
"O-Oh, r-right~! Ahem! Please, do take care out there, Lakyus." Renner awkwardly replied in a friendly tone as she fumbled with the bottle's lid, gently placing it on the table in an equally awkward posture.
Exchanging their farewells, Blue Rose filed out of the room, with Lakyus continuing to glare the twins down akin to a disapproving older sister. A few minutes passed after their departure, and Renner's façade faded as a cunning smile twisted her features. She honestly enjoyed this rather humorous exchange with Blue Rose. Especially when it affirmed her succusses.
The first was dissuading them from looking further into Eight Fingers, which she knew had been subjugated into Nazarick's service. She spoke true when she utilized the resources at her brother's and Marquis Raeven's disposal. Although it was to propagate the fiction that they had been severely weakened. Since she was under Nazarick's surveillance via magic and the Shadow Demon currently attached to her, by any measure she was keeping useful pawns ignorant.
Still, the second reason was veiled behind a series of proxies she skillfully used to send them on their quest, thanks to the aforementioned resources at her disposal. While Madara's orders to have Blue Roses sent to him was a surprise, it was actually quite thrilling playing in the middle of two powerful forces like this, all without anyone being the wiser for it.
Yes, things developed in an interesting direction indeed, and as she cradled the twins' gift in her right-hand, her twisted smile contorted even more as she chuckled. Rarely is she surprised by the inferior minds of others, but this was quite the pleasant one. Despite continuing to see them as little more than a means to an end, that they supported her "affection" towards her dear Climb was enough to value them slightly above her original estimation, if only slightly.
She would still need to tread carefully of course. If Nazarick ever found out that she was playing both sides, not only would her life be forfeit, thanks to the seals Madara placed on her tongue and heart, but her dear Climb would be sad. He's so fragile after all. No, his gaze is for her, and her alone, and despite the rather inconvenient position of having to play the brim and proper princess, she looked forward to the day when she could use the twins' gift, and have her Climb look up at her with even more affection...
...
Around the same time that Princess Renner's meeting with Blue Rose occurred, a different type of meeting was soon to take place within the Baharuth Empire. Traveling down a stone path to the gates of a manor, the disguised Hilma under the alias of "Shauna Gilmore", with her bodyguard "Allura", took in the fresh, warm, clean air of the countryside with expressions of contentment as they neared their destination.
They certainly kept busy over the last few days as they used that strange "reverse summoning" ability of their master's clones to first do business in the Empire's capital-city of Arwinter. Upon concluding that business, they then came to the city of Rothar which bordered the Re-Estize Kingdom to the southwest.
After making a few inquiries there, they then made their way east to this place. The manor was in the wilderness flanked on all sides with dense woods and foliage, save for a single path that was too narrow to make use of their carriage. Whomever this manor's occupant was, they certainly valued the isolation and privacy. This did not seem to displease "Shauna" however.
The weather was pleasant, and after coming to an understanding with the disguised Edström to her right, enjoyed the company of one she could now call a friend and confidant. As they came to the locked gate of their destination, the individual in question took the initiative and rang the bell that hung to their right of the gate.
*DING*DING*DING*
Ringing it three times, she returned to her position next to her charge, folded her arms as they waited for someone to greet them, and struck up conversation in a relaxed tone.
"This is to be our last stop in the Empire before returning to the Dragon Kingdom, yes?"
"Oh, indeed. Although I hoped we could return to Arwinter and take in the sights, alas it is not to be. A pity. That city truly is a jewel~! Ah~ah. I suppose it's just as well." Hilma said in an aloof manner, to which Edström chuckled before replying in a friendly tone and smirk.
"Why do I get the feeling that there would be more to it than simply enjoying the luxuries of one of the continent's best human cities?"
"Hehe... Ah, you know me so well, 'Allura'. It's a pity that our 'employer' rejected my suggestion that I seduce the Emperor and become his consort. The resources we could tap into would surely aid in the cause.~" Shauna said in a licentious manner as she folded her arms to cradle her ample bosom.
"Hah~! In another world perhaps, but I think our 'employer' was very wise to shoot down your idea, 'Shauna'. As I understand it, Emperor Jircniv is no fool. It'd take more than a pretty face to charm him in anyone's good graces. No matter how skilled or cunning."
"Oh~! You wound me, my friend, but sadly, I must concede that you may be right... Ah, finally."
As the duo cut their friendly banter short, a butler emerged from the manor's front entrance. He was surprisingly young, being in his early-to-mid-20s, with a firm but slim frame, and fine raven-black hair that framed either side of his head. His face also had a well-trimmed goatee of the same color, and dark-green eyes that analytically sized the pair up as he approached.
"Greetings. I am Albus Pickman. Retainer and butler to his residence. How may I help you, ladies?" He asked in a firm, professional, and stoic tone as he gracefully bowed at the waist.
"Good day to you. My name is Shauna Gilmore, and this is my personal retainer and bodyguard Allura. It was our hope to speak with the master of this place. Is he available?" Hilma said in a cordial bow and manner.
"I see... Well, the master might be... indisposed at the moment..."
*CRASH*BOOM*
"AAAAAAAARGH!"
Suddenly, the earth trembled beneath their feet as a howling warcry echoed through the air. The butler Albus sighed wearily in a surprising break from decorum, telling Shauna that this was hardly an unusual event for the servant. In turn, as the butler Albus regained composure, and was silently impressed by the reactions of the pair of female visitors.
The bodyguard Allura was still, and her posture relaxed as she kept her senses keen and open to her surroundings. Her employer Shauna was more of the surprise, since at first glance she would have been confused for a noblewoman unused to such sudden events. Not only was she unperturbed, but she seemed amused, even pleased by this.
He thought on what to do with these latest visitors. They hardly seemed like the many others he has turned away seeking his master. No, if anything, there was something about them that his instincts hinted that maybe they would be of benefit to his master. Still, he had his instructions to turn away any that sought him out...
"If I may my dear Mr. Pickmen, while I can respect your loyalty and devotion to your master's will, perhaps after so long in isolation, he would benefit from the perspective of some visitors. Especially ones that have his best interests at heart. After all, there is only so much a person can do alone. Even one as such he."
"..."
The butler's attention then suddenly snapped to Shauna. As he narrowed his vision on her, it became quite clear to him that there was more to her than met the eye. Now more than ever, he wanted to turn them away, as she demonstrated an intelligence and cunning others lacked. Although it was those very qualities that gave him pause, because she spoke true. Indeed, his master could use a change of pace, and a beneficial distraction from his obsessive pursuits.
After battling an internal conflict between the loyalty his master's word, and his loyalty to his master's well-being, he sighed heavily, making a decision he hoped he would not regret later.
"Hmm... Very well, Madam Gilmore. You may enter. Though be advised, I cannot vouch for my master's degree of decorum or etiquette, as he is disinclined to receive visitors." He said with a cautious edge to his otherwise professional tone.
"I perfectly understand. Please, lead the way."
Giving them a stiff nod, he reluctantly opened the gate, and closed it back up after they passed the threshold. Beckoning them to follow, he slowly led the way as they took in their surroundings. The manor was indeed small and modest, with its highwalls doing much to conceal it from view, as much as it deterred those from intruding.
In fact, most of the space inside the walls was dedicated to open yards and facilities for training, rather than luxurious living space. Another fact concealed by the highwalls, was that the manor was surprisingly lined with beautiful, fragrant rows of flowers and roses that gave the air a sweet, calming aroma.
"I never would've expected a man like him to have a rose garden." A surprised "Allura" said in bewilderment.
"Actually miss, the idea was mine. Since the master has dedicated himself to training, I thought it would help in calming the mind after a long, hard day's work." Albus matter-of-factly said.
"Oh, I see~. Although should we not lower our voices, until you can announce us to him?"
"There's no need for that, Madam Gilmore. From the moment you entered the gates, the master became aware of your presence." Albus answered with a weary sigh.
"Hmm... Quite impressive his senses." Allura contemplatively commented.
"As I have said, the master has dedicated himself to training, in all its aspects, and views anything else as little more than distractions. "
"..."
To this latest bit of information, the disguised Hilma thinly smiled. The target of their latest recruitment efforts sounded perfect for their master's designs. If he could be swayed that is. After all, the one criterion that proved a unique challenge in her efforts was that those they approached much choose to commit of their own free will, regardless of whatever method she employed to coerce them.
Once she met the one here, and gained a better understanding of him as a person, that would be the real challenge in guiding their negotiations.
[Don't do anything reckless, Hilma.]
Edström's cautionary voice filtered into Hilma's consciousness via a magic item from the Deep Darkness Dragon Lord's treasury called a [Link-Pearl]. It allowed the linked sets of items to be used for telepathic communication over great distances, and unlike the [Message] spell, was much more reliable. Although it was at the cost of not being able to send any communications to others.
[Don't worry, Edström. I will just do what I usually do in these types of negotiations.] Hilma tried to reassure her bodyguard.
[Yes, I know. That's why I'm saying to be careful, Hilma... I may have an immortal body now, but this man... As much as I hate to say it, he's stronger than I am.]
[Oh? You can tell from this distance? It sounds like you've been doing some training of your own.]
[Hmph... That magic caster Damar said it himself. As an Edo Tensei, we may not be able to get stronger through training, but we can still gain additional abilities. After my encounter with that inhuman old man Sebas, I've been training my senses to 'read' a person's strength. Strangely, Madara's given helpful advice towards that goal.] Edström said in bitter irony.
[Indeed, our newest master can be an enigma, but that is a conversation for later. It seems we have arrived...]
Cutting off their mental communications, they arrived at a sizable clearing behind the manor of stone construction, with numerous craters dotting its surface. Additionally, incredibly large sets of boulders lined the backmost portion of the highwalls. Some bore many cracks upon their surface, with others smashed into pebbles. Strangely though, they were steaming, as if exposed to extreme heat.
In the center of the clearing was a man in full-plate armor with helm breathing and panting so heavily, one would think he had run a marathon. His armor glistened in the midday sun as even seeing him from his backside, they could tell it was coated in layers of his own sweat. His armor bore additional weights strapped to the surfaces of its forearms, chest, waist, legs, and calves, increasing the burden on his body several-fold as a result.
The greatsword he wielded for his training was a shock, even to the disguised Edström, as it looked more like a slab of iron than a proper sword. Although it was also obvious that it was part of this man's training regimen, the extreme lengths he went to in his pursuit of strength was quite sobering for her. Inspiring even. For a moment she was just in awe of him, that is until the butler stepped forward to announce them with a graceful bow.
"Master, please forgive the interruption, but may I present the Lady Shauna Gilmore and her bodyguard Allura."
"..."
For a tense moment there was no answer as the man stood motionless, regulating his ragged breathing. Then in an impressive display, with one hand he planted his training-sword into the ground as he removed his helm. He did not turn to face them, but instead placed it, positively dripping with sweat onto the greatsword's pommel. They could only see his glistening brown locks as he folded his arms, sternly speaking as his voice carried weight and power.
"Albus... I thought I made it clear I was to receive no visitors... What is the meaning of this?"
"I... Ahem... My humblest apologies master, but they were... quite insistent they see you, and perhaps you might agree that what they may have to say is worth hearing."
"..."
Although the butler's voice remained even and steady, Hilma could tell that the man was quite unnerved by having disobeyed his master's instructions. Given the impressive specimen of manhood to her front, she could definitely understand why. Just as she was about to speak up in his defense, the man she came to see replied in a dismissive tone.
"Hmph! No matter. I will humor them, and only them. You are dismissed."
"Very good, sir. I shall leave you to your guests."
Bowing once more, the butler promptly left as Hilma stepped forward to introduce herself.
"As your butler so kindly said, I am Shauna Gilmore. It is a singular pleasure to finally meet you at last, Kullervo Palantynen. Former Martial Lord of the Grand Arena, and the fabled 'Corrosive Wolf'."
Turning on his heel at Hilma's use of his name and titles, Kullervo Palantynen gave them his full attention. For a moment, even the disguised Edström held herself from taking a step back. He felt intense, primal. Even in his current fatigued state. His jade-green eyes locked onto theirs and held them with a focused intensity that would have cowed lesser individuals in fear. It was perfectly complimented by white streaks that framed the sides of his head.
Like a monster in human form, his piercing gaze sized-them up in a single glance, and despite a modicum of surprise in what she could assume was in how attractive they were, that gaze dismissed them just as easily as he huffed.
"Spare me the pleasantries, woman. I have neither the time nor the patience to entertain you. Out of respect for whatever convinced Albus to disobey my instructions and let you in, I will hear you out. But waste my time further, and I will not hesitate to throw you out myself. If we understand each other, then tell me, why are you here?"
"Hm... I can understand and accept that. In fact, it is rather refreshing to be able to speak plain from time-to-time... I am the manager of the Fire-Leaf Concern based in the Dragon Kingdom, and among the many operations we conduct, defense contracting is one we recently began to engage in. To that end, we have been recruiting many strong individuals to aid in our plight against the Beastman Country assailing our country. And so I ask you plainly good sir, will you lend your strength to our cause?"
"..."
There was only silence as Kullervo Palantynen narrowed his vision on "Shauna Gilmore". He was akin to a predator sizing up prey as he eyed her up and down. While it was natural to assume he was thinking the offer over, the tension in Edström did not lessen. Her instincts told her that this man regarded them with hostility and contempt. Which became hostile disappointment after the disguised Hilma stated their purpose.
"Hmph! What nonsense. This is what brought you here? Then you can see yourselves out. I have no need for anyone's coin, and if you wish others to fight a war for you, then go bother the Empire's Adamentites." Kullervo dismissively groused as he motioned to turn away from them.
"Ku~fufufu... Well now, this was unexpected... To think that the mighty 7th-Generation Martial Lord would be craven."
"...What was that?!"
'Hilma you idiot!'
Edström screamed in her mind as the tension in the area rose several-fold, and the man before them glared at Hilma with naked bloodlust that chilled both women to their core. Despite the terror that made her heart thunderously pound inside her bosom, Hilma knew this calculated risk was necessary.
A man such as this was not going to be moved by coin, and despite the brief hints of attraction she saw in his fierce green eyes, she knew that coercion via seduction would not stir him to action either. Attacking his pride on the other hand, whilst exceedingly dangerous, was the only avenue available to her as she took a breath disguised as a disappointed sigh and replied.
"My apologies, but was it not your wish to speak plain and not play games? Did I not say it was our wish to recruit strong individuals to our cause? Then please, do not insult our intelligence by referring to the Empire's Adamantite-plates. Isolated as you are from outside affairs, you should know very well that individually speaking, they are quite weak when compared to real Adamantites worthy of the rank. Can we not agree on this?"
"..."
That seemed to placate the incensed Kullervo as his posture relaxed, and the hostility eased off a little as he folded his arms and he tilted his head towards Hilma, prompting her to continue.
"What I offer is this; a proving ground in which to test your might against an implacable foe that would come for you with bloodlust and killing intent. To put the power that you have been so diligently cultivating to the proof. After all, is not a warrior's true mettle shown when facing down life-or-death struggles?"
For another tense moment there was silence as her words echoed throughout the ruined yard, before Kullervo closed his eyes and lowered his head, assuming a more contemplative posture. It seemed that her words struck a chord with the man who had dedicated himself so utterly to the pursuit of strength.
After an agonizingly long few minutes in the man's presence, he let out a slow, calming breath. An action that seemed to dissipate the oppressive atmosphere around them as he curtly spoke.
"Hmph. You make some good points, Shauna. Or whatever your name is. And since we're continuing to speak plain, I will be upfront; I do not trust you. You're hiding something, are you not?"
There was a pleasant smile and a nod of confirmation from her that frankly surprised all present as Hilma let out a calming breath of her own. The man was not only a beast in his own right, but his finely honed senses ensured that he would not be so easily deceived. Best to play that to her advantage.
"Indeed, I am hiding a great many things. But then again, are you not as well? We each must hold our cards close. I, in my dealings with those who have yet to give their answer, and you who must make his decisions against unknowns in the field of battle. Whatever form that field takes. Should you agree to our terms, whatever you require shall be made available to you. Even I, should you desire.~" Hilma said with a charming smile.
"...Hmph... Heh... Heh-heh-heh..."
To their shock there was amused chuckling from the man as he sighed and shook his head at her actions.
"When I first saw you, I honestly took you for some noble's pampered daughter. That alone was enough to insult me. But I misjudged you. You've got guts... It's not anyone who could stand there and take my bloodlust like you have. You must have been through a few trials of your own." Kullervo said with a modicum of respect in his tone.
Another smile decorated Hilma's lips as images of Madara and the Deep Darkness Dragon Lord flashed in her mind's eye. Indeed, if she had not met them first, perhaps Kullervo would have overwhelmed her with a presence that put even Zero to shame. Madara in particular possessed an unmatched oppressive aura that need not assert itself to strike awe and terror in equal measure in her heart.
It was an exhilarating feeling to know that a man such as he existed, and why she could bear with whatever Kullervo did to project his own primal presence upon them. A fact that filled her with pride as she smiled.
"Yes, I have seen and experienced many things. And I am certainly not a noble's pampered daughter."
"Hm... Indeed. I can see that for myself. If I forced to describe you, then perhaps a 'cunning and treacherous thorny rose' would be apt." Kullervo sternly said, firmly maintaining eye contact with her, which she reciprocated.
"Ah~hah-hah-ha~! Yes, that does sound appropriate in this instance." She blithely replied.
"Hmph... At least you're honest. Any pretentious posturing and I would've rejected your offer."
"So, by your wording, am I to take it that you accept?"
"Oh, I'm sure you've taken many things in your life, woman. But yes, I accept your offer."
"Pffft...!"
There was a snort of amusement from "Allura" behind at his comment that she tried to stifle as Hilma removed a sealed envelope from her purse. Stepping forward to hand it to the former Martial Lord, he took it in hand and nodded curtly as she spoke.
"This will have the terms and conditions of our working together, as well as instructions for travel and departure. I'm sure you will find them agreeable."
"I suppose we'll see, Shauna."
"Yes, I'm sure we will... Ah, and do be kind to Albus. He seems the loyal, duteous sort, looking out for your best interests."
"Oh? Again, you surprise me. I didn't expect you to look out for someone you just met." Kullervo skeptically said with raised brow.
"Believe me good sir when I say, he has done us both a service. You will see in time."
"Hmph... Well, until that time, I'm sure you and your bodyguard can see yourselves out."
"Indeed, I'm sure we can. Good day to you, Kullervo Palantynen. It's been a pleasure."
With a graceful dainty bow, she excused herself from his presence. Turning to leave, she made sure to add a subtle sway to her hips that accentuated the movements of her curvaceous posterior. Although not looking back, she could feel his eyes upon her, and smiled that her wiles were still useful. Despite being a powerful, willful man, she suspected that keeping himself in abstinent isolation would have made him more susceptible, and was pleased to be correct.
A few minutes later, she and "Allura" exited the manor's grounds from the front gate, and the moment they did, Edström initiated a [Link-Pearl] conversation...
[That was one hell of a risk you took, Hilma.] She said in a displeased tone.
[Yes, it was, but a necessary one. A prideful man like that would need more of a push, as you well know.] Hilma wearily replied in the link.
[Granted, but from now on, try to warn me in advance before you take such risks... Still, you've really changed. The Hilma I knew never would've risked herself like that.]
[Heh... I suppose I have...] Hilma contemplatively mused.
"..."
The walk back to their carriage was done in relative silence as Edström merely nodded at her reply. Nothing more needed to be said, as she soon realized that Hilma's willingness to risk herself was born from something she never thought possible; loyalty. Loyalty to their master Madara, and to his goals.
Never would Edström have thought such a thing possible for the former Eight Fingers executive. But then again, never did she think it possible to become friends with someone she previously despised. Their master seemed to have this quality to draw people to him. Whether it lay with his aura of absolute power demanding one's respect, or the intensity in which he spoke of his ideals, it readily became clear that it inspired those he recruited. Even she who was drafted into his service from the very grave found herself feeling the same...
...
Overcast gave the sky a gray coloration as the forests north of Re-Blumrushur held an aura of tension within. Blue Rose had arrived early that morning, with Lakyus and Gagaran in their full panoply waiting within the treeline, as the twins and Evileye performed reconnaissance on their target location.
From the moment they arrived, something about this forest felt "off", and it was this feeling of disquiet that prompted even more caution than usual from the Adamantite-ranked team. Both Lakyus and Gagaran kept themselves alert to their surroundings, and so were not surprised when the twins and Evileye suddenly faded into view.
"What did you find?" Lakyus promptly asked with a serious, focused demeanor.
"It's strange, fiendish-boss. The whole forest is completely clear of monsters." Tina stoically said.
"Indeed it is, evil-boss. Not a single presence could be sensed. Not so much as a Tree Worm is in the forest." Tia added.
"..."
Lakyus narrowed her vision and grimaced. Not just from the twins' usual monikers for her, but the news they shared. An entire forest devoid of monsters? That simply doesn't happen. Even if the sights of various types of peaceful animals might have set the average mind at ease, the lack of the usual predators found in these parts was as good as a warning sign to them.
She looked around and saw different types of birds with colors ranging from brown, red, and green, stole glances at common snake with speckled designs, and in the trees caught glimpses of the blue, purple, yellow-brown, and red-colored Arcoris Squirrels indigenous to these parts. As a young girl, she loved them for the distinctive colors, and the burst of multi-colored powder ejected from their tails as a defense against predators, but there were none here.
"Hmm... This is too strange... And what of you Evileye? What did you see from the air?"
"There's a clearing over 7-miles ahead with a simple wooden cabin, but there's something odd about it, leader."
"What do you mean?"
"Normally when a clearing happens, it's because something prevents trees from growing, or its manmade. But there's no sign of either being the cause. It's like the trees parted themselves to make that clearing. My guess is someone used magic, but to do something of that scale would require a druid, and one that's as nearly strong as me."
That bit of news did not settle well with the human members of Blue Rose one bit. If there's a druid as strong as Evileye, or relatively close to her, then they would be marching into territory completely to their opposition's advantage. That wasn't a coincidence...
"And the cabin? Were you able to see what was inside?" Lakyus asked with a cautious edge in her tone.
"Only briefly. I didn't linger since any magic caster capable of this would be able to see through my invisibility. I did see the adventurers of the guild's investigative branch laid out on cots in a circular pattern. In the center was a hooded figure that tilted its head in my direction when I tried to get a closer look. I left before it saw me, but we must assume that whoever it is, they may already know that we're here." Evileye answered with a wary tone.
"Hm? Oi, Evileye... What's wrong?" Gagaran asked with head tilted.
"What? Why do you ask?"
"Oh... It's just that... You seem kind o' tense."
"..."
For a moment, Evileye was left confused by her comrade's statement, but then she looked down at her hands, and found them to be involuntarily shaking ever so slightly. The average person would not have been able to pick up on that, but her teammates were Adamantites worthy of the rank, and moreover, friends with whom she had been with through thick and thin. There was simply no way they would fail to pick up on that detail.
"I... don't know. I really didn't notice until you pointed it out muscle-head. But... I will admit that there was something... unnerving about that person." Evileye pensively admitted.
"Hm... This is even more troubling..." Lakyus mused.
If there was a druid there in league with a demonic cult, and close to Evileye's strength, then perhaps that might have been the trigger. After all, druidic arts were quite effective in dealing with vampires. Although that didn't fully explain Evileye's reaction, it did serve to doubly enhance the team's level of caution.
"Oi, this ain't good. It reeks of a trap. What's the plan, Lakyus?" Gagaran asked with a sigh of disappointment.
"Hm. You might be right about that. A powerful druid with guildmembers held in a remote cabin investigating that cult? It's definitely a trap. But is it targeting us specifically? Not that it matters. They have hostages, and we can't ignore the rumors of their activities in this area either."
"So, if they've made a trap, we spring it ourselves?" Tina stoically asked with a slight frown.
"What other options do we have?"
"Hm. We could set the forest on fire and leave them for dead. Guildmaster did say 'if possible' when it comes to rescue. But we'd fail the objective of finding out what they're up to in this area. If it's anything like Leite Village, we can't just leave it alone." Tina matter-of-factly replied.
Lakyus sighed at Tina's rather cold approach to the situation, even if it made the most sense in this situation. It was then that Evileye spoke up in her usual straight tone.
"I may have something, but just to confirm, you're all in possession of those teleportation and anti-negative energy items granny and I made for you?"
The human members of Blue Rose looked at each other and then to Evileye with nods affirming that they did indeed have the items she referenced.
"Good. In that case, if we're forced to spring the enemy's trap, I have an idea..."
After taking a moment to formulate their strategy, Evileye used the [Floating Board] spell to conjure four platforms for them to ride as Evileye took flight. She and her comrades flew over the forest to ensure that at the very least, they could avoid any traps that were set for them. A few minutes later, they reached the clearing without incident, but as soon as they did, that same hooded figured strode out of the cabin, flanked by the captured adventurers.
They had more or less anticipated this development. Especially when the four adventurers in question held blank, empty eyes and expressions, indicating the telltale signs of magical manipulation. Nodding to each other to signal their readiness, Evileye lowered them to about 10-feet above the ground, and 15-feet to the hooded figure's front.
Before anyone on their team could act, much to their surprise, the hooded figure pulled back his hood, to reveal a man with tanned skin, brown eyes, and long straight black hair. A stoic expression met their gaze as he spoke in a flat tone of voice. (A/N:CH.10)
"Welcome, Team Blue Rose."
"..."
They honestly weren't expecting discourse with this mysterious figure. Having deduced this all to be a trap, they prepared a number of methods and scenarios to combat ambush and rescue the hostages. However, despite being taken by surprise by this turn of events, if opening up a dialogue would allow them to learn something of who this man is and his aims, then perhaps it was worth humoring him. With her team giving nods of approval, Lakyus spoke up.
"Who are you, and why have you taken these adventurers hostage?"
"Hmph... You have yet to earn the right to my name. As for why, I think you've already realized that they were simply a means to bring you here."
"...!"
This all but confirmed the team's suspicions that this was a trap. Still, before they could act, the unidentified man rose his right-hand and snapped his fingers. Suddenly, the men disappeared in puffs of smoke, as if they were mere illusions. This confused Evileye and the twins, since their senses confirmed the men to be real and living. As if in reply to their confusion, the nameless man flatly spoke.
"The men you seek are sleeping soundly in an inn under false names in Re-Blumrushur. What you saw were merely decoys. Temporary duplicates to fool your senses. Now, the next move is yours."
The team grimaced and glared at man before them. While they were aware of methods like the twins' [Shadow Clone] technique to create duplicates, there was no way that Evileye's senses could have been fooled by that method alone. Whatever the case truly was, they now had two choices to make. Flee immediately with Evileye's teleportation items, or try to take this man in for questioning.
The rest of the team were on edge. Something about this man was quite unsettling. Especially for Evileye, who's involuntary hand-trembling increased, and Tia and Gagaran who still clearly recalled their trouncing at Jaldabaoth's hands had a cold sweat coat their backs. Their instincts, retrained following that encounter, screamed at them to escape fly with all haste. However, their leader Lakyus was of a different mind...
"Evileye! Spring it! We need answers!"
"Shit...! [Twin Maximize Magic: Black Crystal Enclosure]!"
Despite cursing at her leader for making what she felt was a huge mistake, Evileye enacted the plan to trap their quarry within a dual-layered wall of Crystal-Element, 10-meters wide in all directions. This included the ground beneath their feet, to which Evileye floated down upon as a dark aura of purplish-gray spread over the once pristine crystalline-blue. Akin to her [Sand Field] spells, she recently developed a way to infuse Negative Energy in her Crystal-Element spells as part of her own training, following the Demonic Disturbance.
With this, any living creature should be trapped, and would prevent even a druid from utilizing their surroundings. A fact made readily apparent to the rest of Blue Rose as they still stood on their [Floating Boards], seeing the surrounding foliage wither into blackened sickness on the outside of the crystalline walls.
Naturally, they expected their nameless quarry to be adversely affected as well, but instead he nonchalantly looked about in mildly curiosity. At first they were confused, until they noticed a blue-colored energy covering his brown-colored footwear that somehow suspended him a few inches off the ground. He then thoughtfully spoke, in a manner akin to an instructor evaluating the performance of a student.
"Hmm... A passable enough entrapment. You were thinking I was some kind of druid, correct? Indeed, this method would have been very detrimental, if that were truly the case..."
"...!"
His words took Blue Rose off-guard. If he was not a druid, then their miscalculation could cost them dearly. Just as Lakyus was about to order her team to fallback, a menacing timbre echoed off the crystalline entrapment as the man rose and clapped his hands together.
"...Now, let the real test begin."
For a moment, space seemed to warp around them as their vision become dark, and an instant later they found themselves somewhere else. Despite the disorientation, their teamwork and instincts was topnotch as Evileye dispelled the Negative Energy infused within the crystalline enclosure.
The rest of Blue Rose jumped off the floating platforms and assumed a formation with Evileye still floating above, Gagaran to the front of Lakyus, and the twins taking positions to their leader's sides as Lakyus was back-to-back with Gagaran. They were shocked to find that they were somehow teleported away from their original position, crystal walls and all. Their new environment felt burning hot, immediately coating their bodies in sweat. To this Evileye immediately cast a spell on the group...
"[Protection Energy All: Heat]!"
An aura of greenish-red briefly flashed over the team as the spell took effect. They breathed a collective sigh of relief as they took stock of their surroundings. They appeared to be in an extremely sizeable cavern that was lit with an orange hue by nearby veins of lava. Although the smells assaulting their nostrils would have told them as much without it.
The scents were a nauseous mix of burning metal, like soldering iron in a forgemaster's furnace, with burning stones and sulfur gases mixed into the lava akin to overcooked rotten eggs. Lakyus cast a spell of her own to ensure the team's human members could breathe without worry.
"[Protection Poison Gas]!"
As the bluish-white aura lit up their forms, Gagaran spoke up in a flummoxed tone.
"Oi! Evileye! How the hells 'dis possible?"
"I... Nevermind that! Use your items to get out of here!"
"We have, Evileye. I've been trying to since we appeared here, with no effect." Lakyus sternly said.
"Wha-?!"
To this the small magic caster float to her leader's side and removed the teleportation item from her waist pouch while the rest remained on guard. The teleportation item in question was a rectangular-shaped crystal, encased in a grayish-blue metal with vine-like designs. She herself tried to invoke the item's power, only for it to shine red each time.
Evileye swallowed hard when this happened, for she knew exactly what this meant...
"It is no use."
"...!"
A powerful masculine voice echoed off the walls, and a rumbling sound shook a platform to the front and high above them as the scarlet form of a Flame Dragon lazily laid down on its side like a cat with its front claws folded over each other. It levied a piteous look upon them as it gazed down and spoke.
"This place is warded against teleportation. You cannot enter or leave unless it's allowed."
The team collectively gulped. A Flame Dragon was the absolute last kind of foe they would have expected to face, and with its high-ground positioning, they were at the worst possible kind of disadvantage.
"SCREEEEEE~!"
The team simultaneously winched as a cacophonous, high-pitched sound akin to a hawk's cry echoed off the cavern walls, and the majestic form of a giant firebird landed on a perch 10-meters to the Flame Dragon's right. It preened itself for a moment before looking down at them with eyes shining with intelligence. Its fiery plumage awed them as they realized that what they faced was in fact a Phoenix.
"Worry not, human adventurers. We will not be attacking you."
While they were thankful to hear this, that still did not explain what in the world was going on, and for that matter, why they were obviously being watched over by such powerful beings. Hoping to make some sense of their situation, Lakyus turned around to address the Flame Dragon in as respectful and dignified tone as she could muster, given their bewilderment.
"I am Lakyus Alvein Dale Aindra. Leader of Adventurer Team, Blue Rose. We did not intend to intrude upon your lair. We suddenly found ourselves teleported in during a mission. Might we ask after your names."
"Grm... I am aware, human. That is the only reason you have not been set aflame. Ordinarily I would not bother introducing myself to your kind, but I shall make exception in this case. My name is Argolas, and this to my side is my comrade, Soleil."
"...!"
Evileye froze the moment the dragon named himself and the phoenix to his side. A reaction that did not go unnoticed her teammates as Tia calmly spoke.
"Evileye? You recognize their names?"
"I... Yes... I do..."
Her voice wavered as the gravity of their situation went from terrible to hopeless in her mind. It was for this reason that she did not answer as fully as she would have wished, before Lakyus pressed the issue.
"Evileye, how bad is it?"
"Please, whatever you do, don't antagonize them. Listen to what I have to say as calmly as possible... They are two of the Three Rulers of Mt. Rappaslea, the Ancient Flame Dragon and the Phoenix Lord, Argolas and Soleil."
"...!"
In that instant, their situation became clear. They knew of the Three Rulers of Mt. Rappaslea, even if they did not know their names. The Ancient Flame Dragon was estimated to be around 150 or more on the Adventurer's Difficulty Ratings, whilst the Phoenix Lord was around 141. This alone made them understand just how bad the situation was, and why a fight with these legendary figures was completely out of the question.
While Evileye herself could be rated to be 150, common knowledge dictated certain races were stronger than others. If similarly rated vampires and dragons were pitted against each other, the dragon would naturally come out on top. For the rest of Blue Rose, Lakyus herself was rated around 90, with Gagaran, Tia, and Tia approximately ranked at 85 each.
Despite equivalent to an entire Orichalcum ranked team by themselves, such rankings did not consider special items, abilities, and powers. Hence the rule of taking those ratings as only a loose guideline. Against something like the Phoenix Lord, even the combined might of Blue Rose's human members would only be enough to delay their inevitable demise.
"Ah, the leader returns."
"...!"
Once again, the tension levels of Blue Rose rapidly increased. What could the likes of the Ancient Flame Dragon possibly regard as a superior? Their answer came when the figure they encountered before appeared before them in a flash. Blue Rose adjusted their formation to face the front as the man's stoic countenance remained the same as he spoke.
"Welcome to the lair of the Ancient Flame Dragon, Blue Roses."
There was silence for a moment as Blue Rose stared down this man, and collectively wondered if he was the "leader" that Argolas mentioned. Such a thing seemed impossible, and yet there was something about this man that demanded their attention. Once again, Lakyus stepped forward to speak for them with firm determination.
"Are you what the Ancient Flame Dragon said was the leader? What are you, and why have you brought us here?"
"Hrmph... Such a willful young girl. Both an asset and a hinderance, becoming readily apparent when it causes lapses in judgement."
Lakyus' eyes widened and then narrowed her eyes at this man's words. He deliberately avoided answering her questions, instead seeming to take a moment to, however indirectly, take jabs at her personally. The roundabout way he insulted her was somewhat frustrating, but she kept her wits about herself, thinking that he was trying to bait her.
"Hmm... Very good, young lady. It seems you can make sound judgements when you really put your mind to it. As a reward, I shall enlighten you..."
Before they could parse his words, his appearance changed, revealing Madara's true face to the Adamantite-rank adventurers as he spoke again in that same firm, stoic tone.
"My name is Madara Uchiha. The dragon spoke true. I am the one he referred to as leader, and I am indeed human. As for why I've brought you here, perhaps you weren't paying attention the first time."
"..."
Taking a moment to calm herself, Lakyus recalled that he had indeed mentioned something about a "test". Although that hardly answered her question, and only created more in not only her mind, but for her team as well. As for his name, it sounded rather foreign to her ears, and his admission that he's human? For a moment she could not believe it, but meeting Momon in the recent disturbance helped her to accept his answer.
"Madara, is it? What kind of test would you go through all this trouble for us?
"Because young lady, there's more happening in this world than you know. More moving about than you can conceive, and you lot simply are not ready for it. Not even that masked lady in the back is ready for it, even if she seems to have finer senses than the rest of you. She seems to at least grasp the gravity of her situation."
Once again, his tone strangely took on that of a tutor evaluating his students, as his line-of-sight moved to their named teammate. Despite her attire hiding her face and most of her petite body, she did seem extremely tense, although this disposition was shared by Gagaran and one of the twins for the most part.
For Evileye herself, she was frankly frightened out of her wits. Her senses screamed "danger" in a way that felt both different and familiar. The latter due to her recent encounter with the one that called himself, "Jaldabaoth", and the former due to how unfamiliar this man's power and pressure exerted itself. Although, as more time passed in his presence, something familiar had indeed begun to resonate with her. Like she had encountered something like it before...?
"...! Wait...! Were you the one?! Did you re-seal the Evil Deity, Dy'varnak?!"
The rest of Blue Rose were so shocked out of their wits, their attention diverted from the man to their front to Evileye. They were already briefed by Evileye and Rigrit regarding what they had discovered in that cave, so her words became all the more significant. As they turned their attention back to Madara, they saw a faint sliver of a pleased smirk before his facial expression returned to its normal, blank state.
"Hm... Very good, Evileye. If that is truly your name. But that is enough talk for now. Take your stances. Defend yourselves with the intent to kill your foe. Otherwise, you won't survive this little test..."
"...!"
...
It was over in less than 5-minutes, as the Ancient Flame Dragon yawned at the pitiful display that unfolded before him and his comrade the Phoenix Lord. Gazing upon the utterly destroyed remnants of the crystal enclosure, he was reminded of how they too were so thoroughly and utterly humbled by their new master. His power was beyond ridiculous, as they too were at that time sprawled out over the ground, wondering if this man was human.
Something he could image the human adventurers wondering, as they found themselves in a similar state, gasping for air like beached fish. Well, all but one, as only Evileye remained upright, propping herself up on a knee. Her mask was shattered, revealing her looks, including the crimson eyes and fangs that marked her vampirism for all to see. Madara himself had his arms crossed, seemingly unsurprised at this development as he calmly spoke.
"So, Blue Rose's strongest member wasn't even human, but was a vampire? And not just any vampire, but the 'Vampire Lord Landfall'... Or would you prefer your true name, Keno Fasris Invern?"
"...!"
As ragged, filthy, and exhausted as she and her teammates were, Evileye and the rest of Blue Rose were once again shocked, this time by the fact that this man, so powerful and peerless that he could likely rival Momon of Darkness, knew so much about her.
"H-How... did you...?!" Evileye stammered, only to be interrupted by Madara.
"All will become clear in time little girl. For now, just know I have no intention of killing you or your team. As far as your performance goes, I have deemed it... adequate. The powerful foes you faced in the Demonic Disturbance has helped strengthen you lot, but you all still have a long way to go. Especially you Lakyus."
"...!"
At the mentioning of her specially, Lakyus struggled to sit up, barely able to do so by propping herself up on her right-side using her elbow and forearms. Her breathing evened out as she questioningly spoke up.
"What... are you... saying?"
"Hmph! Dimwitted little girl. As much as I restrained my power, some of your team still felt it, no? The danger I radiated? Yet you not only missed it, but placed your team in danger. Know this; were I truly your enemy, you and yours would now be dead, and for what? Your mission? Your ideals? Being in the right does not equal might little girl, and without strength, you cannot protect anything. Let alone yourself. And your death would have spelled not only the end of your mission, but all you stand for. What good would your ideals and mission would have been then? Especially when there are none to carry on your will? One would think that your recent experiences would have taught you to weigh the consequences of your actions, but apparently not."
As Madara firmly stared Lakyus down, there was a disappointment, and even a subtle anger in his voice and gaze that frankly unnerved her. In addition, though the words and situation were different, they somehow resonated with what the guildmaster said to her the day before. Was this a consequence of being so focused on her ideals, that she disregarded the basic tenants of risk management?
She could only look down in wordless dejection as her inner conflict grew. This mysterious man of such puissance that he not only laid them low, but it became all too apparent that he was truly the master of the Ancient Flame Dragon and Phoenix Lord. It was like the gods themselves were mocking her for her naivety.
Ignoring her inner turmoil, Madara then moved on to the twins, who had managed to sit up in a similar fashion to Lakyus and glared openly at Madara. He could conclude that their anger was due to his treatment of their leader, however necessary it was. Nodding wordlessly at them in silent understanding, the edge in their gaze seemed to ease off, as if the three had wordlessly reached an accord.
"You two... Your use of clones was clever and creative, but they are sadly lacking in enough power to serve as anything more than distractions. Something to work on in the future."
"..."
The pair seemed puzzled by the sudden bit of praise and critique as they looked to each other and then back to Madara. After all, it should be common knowledge that duplicates, either via magic or their Ninja Arts, would be much weaker than the original. In their case, one-quarter of their original strength was passed on to their clones, although their evasion capabilities were influenced by the amount of power they were infused with.
Realizing their confusion, and seeing that all of Blue Rose had managed to sit up, Madara took a meditative breath, and allowed his power to flow freely...
"...!"
It was like an oppressive wave of heat and weight hit them as the very air became thick and cloying, feeling the full force of his power. The very power that he said he had been restraining during their test. All at once, it became clear why every attack, spell, or special ability had harmlessly bounced off this man. The gap between theirs and his strength was as wide as the heavens and the earth beneath their feet.
This realization made their already exhausted forms shiver in place. In particular Evileye, who stumbled and fell to her rump in defeat, with her eyes widened to the size of saucers. Then, just as quickly as his power washed over them, it receded, and Madara breathed a calming breath. In the moment he was about to speak, Evileye's weak voice echoed, resonating with what was on her team's mind...
"This is... the power... of a god?"
"..."
Perking a brow at this, Madara wondered if perhaps he had gone a little too far in driving the point in how wide their difference in power was. Although what's done is done, and he learned to not dwell overlong on his mistakes. Better to immediately learn from and move past them.
"Hmph... No little girl. This is merely the power of one who has reached the peek, transmitted though his clone."
"Wha...?! His... clone?"
"Yes... What stands before you is not the main body of the one called Madara, but one of his clones."
"...!"
Not even the usually stoic twins could contain their utter shock at this latest revelation. Even they felt that they would break down and cry in the presence of this... What word existed to adequately describe this man if not godhood? A thought that rang through all their minds, even as Madara himself denounced such a title. Did he truly represent the peek of human potential?
Evileye in her long life had seen numerous powerful beings. Not even the Leader of the Thirteen Heroes, nor Momon of Darkness, or even that monster Jaldabaoth compared to this Madara. It was like gazing into an abyss of life-force energy itself, threatening to consume her at one false step. Just as she thought her mind would break from the notion, Madara's firm voice echoed.
"So? What will you do now, Blue Roses? Will you lay there and wilt, or will you follow me, and grow to even greater heights?"
"Eh?"
Lakyus was so dumbstruck as her tear-filled eyes gazed upon Madara in total stupification at his words. As muddled as her thoughts were, even she could grasp his meaning as the purpose of his "test" became clear; he was wanting to take them on his students? Was that the whole reason behind this? Her mind reeled from the implications.
"Ah, it seems like you lot have realized it. And yes, your mistress is aware of this. It is why she sent you to me."
"Oi~! You've gotta be kiddin' me! The princess knows about you?!"
Gagaran, sitting up on her knees, could no longer stay silent as she too felt her entire world twist and bend in ways she thought would drive her mad. And to her query, Madara merely smirked knowingly, which was as good as a confirmation as any in their eyes. A series of heavy sighs rang from all of Blue Rose. Truly, after all they had been through in such a short time, this latest revelation was hardly as impactful.
Though many questions still lingered in their minds, the fact that Renner sent them there made a great deal of sense. Indeed, the more they thought about it, the more it seemed just like her to do such a thing. Granted, this godlike being Madara could be lying, but none of them detected a hint of deceit. Even Lakyus, who at times fostered doubts about her friend Renner, did not feel he was lying. In fact, in their minds it all fell into place.
"Hah~! Dammit. Who would'a thought the princess had it in 'er to pull somethin' like this." Gagaran boisterously commented, finding the humor in their predicament.
"Hm... There is much and more about her than you know, but that is a discussion to be had, after I have heard your answer."
His firm voice seemed to press down upon them as Lakyus finally managed to bring herself up on her knees. Despite everything, she was still conflicted. Not only for the voracity of this man's words, but whether or not she had the right to make such a decision on her team's behalf. She questioningly looked back at them, her eyes saying more than words could as they noticed the conflict within her.
Of course, it was something they could understand, as they bore similar feelings. But in the end, they each reached a similar conclusion; what choice did they really have? In the presence of a paragon such as this, refusal really did not seem an option. Gagaran simply sighed and shrugged in the face of this. Her brush with death at the hands of Jaldabaoth already taught her a harsh lesson, so she was seemingly fine with Clone-Madara's offer.
The twins looked at each other, then Lakyus, and then to Clone-Madara before back to each other. It was during this that they processed everything seen and experienced. For now, they could see themselves going along with this. There was something about this "Madara" that they could feel a kinship with. From the way he moved, carried himself, and spoke, they could swear he was a ninja. Regardless, they would not abandon Lakyus, and each nodded in favor.
As her gaze moved to Evileye, the petite vampire's vision was still locked onto Clone-Madara with eyes widened. Just being near him sent waves of electricity throughout her entire body and pricked at her skin like hot needles. Whatever power he possessed, it was fundamentally opposed to an undead's existence. Yet, he himself did not seeking to destroy her.
No, the one that she knew to have re-sealed that Evil Deity sought to recruit and improve upon her and her comrades. It was humbling and frightening to her in equal measure. Every fiber of her being wanted to run away from this, and yet, there was something that drew her to this paragon among men that eclipsed even Momon of Darkness.
She wanted to know more, and she wanted to stay with her friends with whom she had been through thick and thin, which most definitely included recent events. And so, with a sigh and smile of resignation, she gave a consenting nod to her leader Lakyus. Something that greatly set her mind at ease, as she turned to Clone-Madara.
"On behalf of my team I, Lakyus Alvein Dale Aindra, accept your proposal, and will follow your lead for now... Just... know that we will not follow those orders that fundamentally go against our principles and our ethics."
It took all the will she could muster to finish saying that last part of her affirmation, and fully expected some kind of rebuke for it. Yet surprisingly, none came. Much to her surprise, a small yet proud smirk decorated Clone-Madara's lips. He then spoke with a subtle twinge of that same pride in his voice.
"To stay true to one's principles, even in the face of overwhelming force, takes considerable guts little girl. There is hope for you yet."
"...!"
Lakyus was frankly shocked by his sudden praise. It was akin to how her father praised her, despite her running away from home to pursue her own goals in life. A fond memory that well and truly resonated within her as her cheeks blushed cherry-red, and for the first time since this whole ordeal began, she felt that perhaps, she had made the right choice...
...
As Blue Rose was officially coming into the fold, the real Madara watched all that transpired via a magic item recovered from the Deep Darkness Dragon Lord's treasury, called the [Mirror of Remote Viewing]. Despite the uninspired name, it was useful on occasion, provided that sufficient wards were in place to prevent tracing its observations back to him.
Waving the floating display to cease its function, Madara interlaced his fingers as he sat upon a throne of Wood-Element. His expression was neutral, as well as his tone of voice as he spoke.
"Well? Opinions?"
"Hmph... Assassins have become weaker than they were in my time."
A strong, yet calm and disciplined female voice replied to him as his Wood-Element seat slowly swived to face its source behind him. The woman before him was possessed of a tall, lithe, yet powerful figure which donned a black, body-contouring suit with black, armored portions over the abdomen, chest, shoulders, forearms, thighs, and shins. Throwing blades were seated in rows of pouches across her chest, waist, and thighs, ready to use at a moment's notice.
Upon her back were a pair of curved short-swords diagonally sheathed, whose design was like a cross between a scimitar and katana, without a discernable guard. Wrapped around her neck was a darkly flowing, crimson-colored scarf, with a length that rivaled cloaks as it trailed down to her calves.
Her face was partially obscured by a half-mask that covered her nose, cheeks, mouth, and chin, as well as a circlet of black and dull silver that covered her forehead and the sides of her face. The little exposed skin bore the signs of [Edo Tensei] reanimation, in addition to the blackened sclera of the eyes that outlined ruby-red irises which held a sharp glint. Finally, her hair was a dark-silver color, tied in a single ponytail that reached down to the middle of her back.
"Oi~! Ya' can'en be comparin' those lasses to ye', ya' kno'! 'Specially wen dey be goin' up 'gainst one o' 'is clones!"
"Humph."
The ninja-like female dismissively huffed as she folded her arms, turning her head to regard the boisterous male dwarf to her right. Unlike most dwarves, his short stature was complimented by a muscular physique that was readily apparent, even whist wearing his full-plate armor that bore two to three runic symbols on each of its portions. The armor gave the darkened room a bit of ambient light, making it clear that his panoply was of a magical nature.
This was made all the more obvious by the extremely large Warhammer that he had slung over his right-shoulder of silver and dark-brown coloration. Upon it were six runes which was fairly humming with power as he spoke, stroking his maroon beard with his left-hand, which was tied into a single braid.
His open-faced helm matched his armor's dull-silver and green coloration, as it framed a face that likewise bore the marks of [Edo Tensei]. His aqua-blue eyes looked up with a laidback, even jovial glint as he smiled.
"Hah~! Same as always! Death I see hadn't change ye' much, Izaniya."
The glint in her eyes at the mentioning of her name became adversarial, as she glared down at her dwarven comrade, then speaking with a matching tone.
"Fool of a dwarf-king... Remember, we are not to use our real names without being given leave to do so."
"Aye, aye... I hear ye'." He lazily replied with a hand-wave.
"Hey now, take this a little more seriously. We can't be using our names in the outside world, so it only makes sense to get used to our aliases."
The pair's attention was then drawn to another comrade to their right in the revived Leader of the Thirteen Heroes, who had taken on the name "Benkei". The silent form of the Black Knight was leaning against a nearby wall with arms folded, who had taken on the alias of, "Dorian". All present watched recent events unfold with Madara, having been summoned with the purpose of keeping them up-to-date, as well as provide information and input where needed.
"If ye' say so, 'Benkei'... Oi~! Stop givin' me da' stink eye, 'Vorsa". Yeeesh... Humans have such queer names." The armored dwarf said with an eye-roll.
To this Benkei perked a brow, before a look of realization dawned on him, and he chuckled to himself. He recalled in their past adventures that his friend the "Runesmith King" complained about other names in a similar fashion, and at the time had forgotten that the classical meaning of "queer" was to mean strange or odd, not to describe or disparage sexual orientation.
Back then, he was just thankful he didn't say anything that would have made him look like an utter fool, and was able to figure that out later on. He grew nostalgic for a moment, before then smirking at his friend, and sarcastically speaking.
"And I suppose you think 'Grogg' is such an inspired name? I mean really, leave it to a dwarf to name himself after alcoholic spirits."
"Oi~! What's wrong wit' it? It's simple an' easy to 'member!" The dwarf groused at the jab, before his friend chuckled again, ignoring his displeasure, and turning back to Madara.
"To answer your question, I think they have room for improvement. Although I was shocked to see Keno among them. I was glad to see that she's been doing well, and has gotten stronger since the last time I saw her." Benkei said with clear fondness in his voice.
"Umu... Do not worry. There will be time for a reunion in the future. And I happen to agree with your assessment, Benkei. The human members of Blue Rose will be able to grow considerably, once they have been given the [Ninshu] rite."
"Hm? Not Evileye?" Dorian stoically asked.
"No. I have already confirmed that the chakra used in the rite is harmful to undead. Not even a vampire is not immune to this fact. We will have to find another means of progressing her along with her comrades." Madara plainly stated.
"Oh? Then what about us?" Benkei asked in confusion.
"Indeed. Do you not plan on using this [Ninshu] on us as well?" Izaniya plainly asked, now using the alias "Vorsa".
"As Edo Tensei, the rite won't have adverse effects on you, as your existence does not depend on Negative Energy to animate you."
"Hmph... Quite useful... As well as the fact that you called me back to this world in my prime, instead of the old woman I died as." Vorsa stoically replied as she flexed her right-hand.
"Hm... Indeed... The method of your revival is a bit different, and one that was developed by an associate in the past, but is irrelevant to the topic at hand. As to when [Ninshu] will be used on you all, that will happen once my clones have recovered the remains of the last member of your group."
"Aye? What ya' talkin' about? Even countin' lil' Keno an' old-lady Rigrit, tha' only makes seven o' us. Well, eight if ya' count that lyin' Dragon Lord, but still..." The former Runesmith King, now calling himself "Grogg", said in confusion.
"Think about it for a moment, old friend. It's been over 200-years since our time. Records of our era are either lost or badly distorted by the passage of time. It's something of a miracle that our benefactor here has found as many of us as he has." Dorian said in mild consternation.
"Right... We should count ourselves lucky that this many of us can be reunited... Still, I do have to ask if it's really necessary to use this [Ninshu] on us." Benkei skeptically asked.
"Hm... Yes, it is. Damar's research has shown that Edo Tensei summons cannot grow in strength through conventional training. So [Ninshu] is one of the few means of compensating for some of your lost strength in recalling you to this world." Madara informatively answered.
"I see... Fair enough in that case... Then if you would permit me an unrelated question?" Benkei asked Madara in a respectful tone.
"I'll allow it. Speak your mind."
"Well, it's about your clone's scrap with those adventurers. I couldn't help but notice that, despite the huge gap in strength, all their attacks simply bounced off it. Even that Lakyus girl wielding Dorian's former weapon had her attacks rebuffed by a simple block by your clone's forearm. It was almost as if... your clone was wearing your current panoply. So my question is, would it be fair to say that your clones are sharing in its benefits?"
To this question, Madara could not help but smile in his mind. His initial impressions of Benkei were that he was a relatively straightforward and earnest individual, but not entirely sharp-witted. Clearly that was not entirely the case, and that pleased him to a certain extent. Perhaps the Thirteen Heroes chose him to be their leader for more than just his strength, morals and his charisma.
"Hm... Your instincts serve you well, Benkei." Madara said in a surprisingly pleased tone that took them off-guard.
"Hah~! O' course. He wasn't our leader just fer' 'is ugly mug." Grogg said in a jubilant tone.
"Hmph... You're one to talk. Dwarves aren't exactly known for their attractiveness." Vorsa flatly said.
"Oi! I'll hav' ya' kno' I was always gettin' courted by the ladies!" Grogg proudly declared, having been mildly insulted by her comment.
"Uh-huh... I doubt the bearded men of the dwarves, bumping up against their bearded females is a sight anyone would want to see."
"Hehe... Who said any'ting 'bout dwarish women." Grogg said with a smirk.
"..."
Vorsa was silent for a few moments as her eyes rapidly blinked, trying to fully comprehend the meaning behind his words. When it finally dawned on her, she turned her head to the left as she made retching sounds.
"Oi! What da' hells that fer'?!"
"Hehehe... Okay, okay, that's enough you two... Gods, I never thought I'd miss hearing the both of you going back and forth like that." Benkei admonished as he chuckled at the scene.
"Agreed. They always did argue, fuss, and mock each other mercilessly. It was a constant source entertainment." Dorian said in an oddly smug tone.
To this the dwarf could only growl in annoyance, and as Vorsa turned her back to them, despite her mask, one could get a sense that she was smiling. For Madara, he was surprised at himself in finding mild amusement as their banter. Of course, even someone who spent the majority of his life as a loner like him, save for only a few occasions, could appreciate the moment.
"Ahem! Well, that is all I had to ask for now, so we'll be on standby until our latest comrade is revived." Benkei said for the group in a dignified manner.
"Umu... That is fine. You are all dismissed."
Simultaneously giving Madara a slight bow of respect, the group filed out of the bare room of plain stonework, leaving him alone to bonder recent events. While things had been progressing smoothly for the most part, once again he found himself assailed by that feeling of disquiet that left him ill-at-ease. Something was coming to disrupt his carefully laid plans. He simply knew it in his bones, and he would not allow himself to be caught unawares.
"Humph... Perhaps it's time to call upon Dy'vom, and see if there's any among his brethren that can be recruited."
Affirming to himself his next course of action, Madara stood up from his "throne", and in a puff of smoke and steam, disappeared in a use of a reverse-summoning Jutsu. He was never one to ignore his instincts, and he would act upon them in whatever way he felt was necessary.
...
Elsewhere, a shining blue, white, and green world gave light and color to the blackness of space that cradled its single solitary moon. Its silver sands embraced and reflected the light of its celestial companion in a showing of its symbiotic relationship that one could not be complete without the other...
"Graaagh!"
However, in a single speck across its lunar fields, two individuals in white were illuminated even more brightly than the sands beneath their feet. The first bore a glowing-red fishing rod that was fully extended in his hand, and was none other than Urashiki Ōtsutsuki. Attached to the other end of his unconventional weapon was a descendant of his same clan in Toneri Ōtsutsuki.
After a brief moment of dialogue between the two, the latter charged the former in an attempt to attack him, only to be caught by his weapon's grip. Paralyzed and at his mercy, Toneri grit his teeth in anger and frustration at his situation, wonder what would happen to him now, and the world in which he had accepted a role of guardianship over.
"Now, now, Toneri-dono. It's true that our knowledge of that planet is not entirely complete, and that your actions up to now has been a betrayal, but I come to offer amends.~" Urashiki said in an almost mocking tone.
"W-What... are you... talking about?" Toneri said, struggling in vain against Urashiki's binding.
"Well, let us put it this way. You can either help your clansmen prepare another world for our coming, and have your betrayal expunged. Or you can spend the next 10,000-years slumbering within the Palace of the Dragon King, helpless as this world you seem to love so much is being prepared for cultivation. So, which is it, Toneri-dono? Imprisonment or cooperation? And do make your decision within the next 30-seconds. Or it will be made for you.~"
"...!"
Anger, frustration, and desperation built up within Toneri at a fever pitch as soon as Urashiki finished speaking, still with that same mocking tone and smile. He wasn't so foolish as to take what he was saying at face-value. However, he also knew that if he didn't make a decision soon, the planet he vowed to watch would likely cease to be.
But accepting meant assisting in the destruction of another world to save the one he grew to love. It was an impossible choice to make. Would he end up making the same shameful choice of aiding in a world's destruction? At this time, it appeared that opposing this "Urashiki" was not an option, but he has learned much from observing the Shinobi of the world below.
While outright opposition might not be possible, if he was free, he could still try and feign his cooperation, and undermine him somehow? It was a gamble to be sure, but surely it was a better option than being sealed away for ten millennia, unable to take any action at all? As Toneri's thoughts raced over his options, Urashiki himself maintained his outward façade of confidence, while in truth he was quite nervous.
The window of opportunity to act while his clan's attention was elsewhere would not remain open for long. He was playing a dangerous game after all, and while Toneri's disappearance or sealing could easily be explained away, if Toneri didn't make his decision soon, he would end up having to seal him anyway. In which case, he would be forced to wait for another usable pawn to become available, and to wait for a time to seize that opportunity.
"Do... Do I have your word that the planet below will be left alone?" Toneri asked in struggling breaths.
"Hoh~? Oh, yes. You can rest assured that I won't be bothering with it, once you've agreed to help." Urashiki said with a smirk.
Toneri got the distinct impression that he should not believe a word that passed from Urashiki's lips, but in the end, his options were limited, and so with reluctance, he replied.
"Tch! Very well... I... I accept."
"Excellent, Toneri-dono~! You've chosen wisely. Now then, let us be off, and together cultivate a new rose garden."
"...!"
Without preamble, Urashiki's glowing rod unfurled, wrapping around Toneri in numerous chakra strands as the space around them distorted, swallowing them both. He knew not what awaited him, and all he could do was mentally bid all those on the planet below farewell, as he was dragged into a new world...
...
*A/N: Heya true believers~! Wasn't expecting a new chapter so soon, huh? Heh. Neither was I if truth be told. Thankfully, IRL shenanigans eased up enough to get this done ahead of time, so I can't complain. Speaking of complaints, I've gotten a few regarding the introduction of the Ōtsutsuki into this story. To those complaints I ask you assume nothing, and keep reading as the story unfolds. One reader got it right when he said that Madara's presence in the NW was done with a purpose, and not just for some deity's "lulz". Although that might've been funny on its own, to me that's just lazy storytelling. Good storytelling to me is when nothing is wholly an accident, and much like the domino principle, one event will lead into another, and then another, and so on. Even if you can't see where it all began. Plus, Nazarick gets a chance to see some more action... What do I mean by that? You'll see. Until then, stay strong, keep the faith, and take care of yourselves in this insane world of ours. Laterz~! ;)*
