Chapter 33

June 19th, 1999

27 days until I see Gunnar

Adam's POV

I was walking around Bde Maka Ska Lake with Gunnar enjoying the beautiful day we were walking, talking, holding hands and kissing. "Let's sit down, my legs are hurting," I said.

"Sure," Gunnar said.

"Oh, it's a beautiful day," I said.

"Vah, I've got something to tell vou," Gunnar said.

"Sure, what is it sweetheart?" I asked.

"I'm not gay," Gunnar said.

"What?" I asked.

"I love vomen, I'm in love vith your sister," Gunnar said.

"What?" I asked again, I had tears coming down my checks.

"Did you tell him," I heard Bella ask.

"Ves sweetheart," Gunnar said.

"No, Please Gunnar Please I will do anything. How did this happen?" I asked.

"Too many miles, duh." Bella said.

"What…. What…. What about Paddy?" I asked.

"Who?" Bella asked.

"Your boyfriend Paddy Ridley," I said.

"I don't have a boyfriend named Paddy Ridley; I have never heard of a Paddy Ridley. I am in love with Gunnar Daníel Stahl," Bella said.

"And I love you Isabella Lillian Banks," Gunnar said as he stood up, and kissed Bella on the lips hard.

"NO THAT SHOULD BE ME, THAT SHOULD BE ME KISSING HIM!" I yelled.

"Goodbye Adam," Gunnar said.

"No, Bella Gunnar please, come back, please," I said crying hard.

I woke up in a cold sweat breathing hard. "It was just a dream, it was just a dream," I said to myself. But what if it wasn't? There was only one thing that I could do, call Gunnar.

I snuck out of my room at Coach and Michele's house. I closed the door and walked out to the kitchen to make the phone call to Guy's and Gunnar's.

"Hello," Guy said sleepily.

"Guy?" I asked.

"What?" Guy asked.

"It's Adam. Can I talk to Gunnar? Please?" I asked.

Guy snorted before he said, "Are you kidding me it's 4 am?"

"Please, I won't be able to sleep unless I do," I said.

"Alright, fine," Guy said. I looked at the clock on the oven, Guy was right it was after 4 in Minneapolis since it was after 2 in California.

After waiting several minutes, I heard Gunnar whispered, "Hello?"

"Hey, it's me. I need to talk to you. I had a scary dream," I said as I was crying.

"Vhat's vrong, Adam?" Gunnar asked.

"Well, I had a dream about you and I walking around the lake talking and what not and then you told me that you were breaking up with me and that you love women and were in love with my sister," I said.

"Oh Adam," Gunnar said.

"Well, are you? In love with my sister?" I asked.

After several minutes of silence, I heard Gunnar said, "Ves."

"What?" I asked.

"As a oh what you call it not my sister but my spouse's sister?" Gunnar asked.

"You mean as an In-Law? You love Bella like a Sister-in-Law?" I asked.

"VES THAT'S IT," Gunnar yelled.

Then I heard banging on the wall from Guy's neighbor as she yelled, "I TOLD YOU TO BE QUIET!"

"I can't wait until you move home, I want to move in with you guys, even if I am on the sofa," Gunnar said.

"Really? Guy, driving you nuts?" I asked.

"No Guy, his mom and I get along great. It's vhe neighbors; vhe valls are so paper vhin. I vhink vhat Eden has vhicker valls vhan vhis place," Gunnar whispered.

"I am sorry sweetheart," I said.

"Go get you some milk and warm it up. That usually helps put me back to sleep," Gunnar said.

I opened the cabinet that the glassware was in and went to reach for a plastic cup behind the cup that was made of glass. I accidentally knocked the glass into the sink, and it shattered, "Shit," I said.

"Vou, okay?" Gunnar asked.

"Yeah, I broke a glass," I said as I started to grab the bigger pieces.

"Vell be careful," Gunnar said.

"I will be, say your middle name isn't Daniel, is it?" I asked.

"No, it's Áslákur Pétur. Gunnar Áslákur Pétur Stahl," Gunnar said.

I sighed heavily, before I said, "Okay."

Gunnar and I talked for a few more minutes, until I turned around and found Coach standing in his underwear armed with a baseball ball. "JESUS COACH!" I said as I held my free hand up to my heart.

Michele's POV

I heard something of glass break and woke up quickly, there was only one thing that I could think of a robber. When we first moved into this neighborhood it seemed peaceful and all but lately it hasn't been peaceful. After all the house 3 doors down from us got robbed the other night. I could not wait to move home. I almost wanted to take Hans and move into my parents' home in Duluth for a few weeks, while Adam was finishing up at Lakeshore. It took a lot out of Gordon to convince me to stay.

"Gordon? Gordon?" I said as I shook him.

"What?" Gordon asked.

"I heard something, I think that it might be a robber, go and check it out please?" I asked.

"Alright, fine," Gordon said as he threw the covers off him.

"Thank you, sweetheart," I said.

Gordon's POV

I grabbed the baseball bat and checked out my son's room first, he was sleeping soundly, no sign of forced entry. The door to Adam's room was closed. I made the way to the living room and didn't see the window broken or the door messed up then I saw the light on in the kitchen, I went into the kitchen and saw our robber, he was a tall thug. He then turned around.

"JESUS COACH," Adam said as he had a hand up to his heart.

"Banksie? What are you doing?" I asked as I lowered the bat.

"Vhats going on?" I heard Gunnar over the phone.

"I uh, couldn't sleep. I called Gunnar. What are you doing up?" Adam asked.

"Michele thought she heard a robber," I said.

"I broke a glass. I was trying to get it cleaned up, then I was going to make some warm milk and drink it," Adam said.

"Ok well say goodnight to Gunnar and we will talk," I said.

"Goodnight, Gunnar," Adam said over the phone and then he hung up the phone.

"So do you want to tell me the story?" I asked.

Adam had told me what happened in his dream, "Man that was quite the dream. But I would not worry about losing him to your sister," I said.

"Yeah at least I know that Gunnar still loves me, despite some others," Adam said as he pulled his warmed milk out of the microwave.

"Are you talking about Phillip and Seraphina?" I asked.

"Yeah, if they didn't love me. Why did they keep me?" Adam said.

"I don't know Adam. All I know is that I love you," I said.

"I have a question for you," Adam said.

"Well shoot, I have an answer for you," I said.

"Why me, why did you choose to love me?" Adam asked.

"Because you are the one that needed love the most. You remind me of me at your age. I wanted you to know the love of a parent. That is one of the real reasons that I took you and Bella from the Hawks other than "Playing by the rules." I didn't want you and Bella to go through the same thing as I did back when I was a Hawk," I said.

"What? I thought it was because I was placed in the wrong district," Adam said.

"You were. See Hans told me how the district lines had been redrawn. If that had happened when I was playing; I would not have been a Hawk, I would have been a Duck. That night I checked out the roaster of both the Ducks and Hawks and realized that you lived at 450 N Hennepin Ave. The same address that I lived in when I lived in Edina," I said.

"What?" Adam asked.

"Yep, I even checked you and Bella out for a couple of games before I filed the complaint with the pee-wee hockey league. I realized that your dad was rather distant with you and more focused on Bella though your mother loved you, she was more interested in her friends with the other players on the team then focused on watching you. I saw a lot of me in you," I said.

"What happened with you and the Hawks?" Adam asked then he took a sip of milk.

"It was the last game of the state finals in 1973. The Hawks and The Cardinals were tied 2-2 at the end of the third period. I get a penalty shot, I go in, I triple deke and faked the goalie right out of his pads. The puck's headed in and then CLANG!' I said as I hit my fist on the counter. Adam groaned. 'Hits the post. We lost in overtime. A quarter of an inch this way and it would have gone in, Adam. A quarter of an inch."

"Yeah, but a quarter of an inch in the other direction and you would have missed completely," Adam said.

"I know. Charlie pointed that out to me when I first took over the ducks. After the game Jack Reilly, ripped one into me for missing the goal. I decided that I was done playing hockey after that. When I got to Eden Hall I was forced to live with Ted Orion," I said.

"Are you kidding me?" Adam said as he took a sip of milk.

"Nope, Ted and I have known each other since our freshman year in high school. I was the best man at his wedding. I had asked him to take over for me with the Ducks when I was offered the position with the Goodwill Games Committee. I knew he could use the money with Rachel being injured. Ted and Steph were hurting after Ted quit the North Stars. They separated for a little while. Ted was on my couch, which worked out great because I was with the Waves. After Ted and Steph got back together, I asked them to put my stuff into storage and then four months later I got injured and my playing career was over."

"Man," Adam said.

"When I was younger, I was a total hot shot playing hockey, and wanted to take control of every game. Same with the law, I ruled in the courtroom, but inside I am a mess. I started to drink. Then the best thing happened, I got arrested and sentenced to community service and there you all were. No matter how I fought it and believe me Adam; Ted would attest to you that I fought hard. There you kids were," I said.

Adam was crying at this point.

"You kids gave me a life, a career and a family. And I want to thank you," I said.

"Your welcome and you are going to give me someone to look up to or rather down to," Adam said and then he finished his milk.

"Hey just because you are taller than me, does not give you the right to start the short jokes, Paul Bunyan," I said.

Adam laughed.

"Besides, I am going to need someone to tag team with when Hans gets big enough to wrestle with," I said.

"You got it, Dad," Adam said and then he yawned.

"Well, I think that Dr. Gunnar's prescription is working. I think that it's time to show Michele who her robber is and then go to bed," I said.

"I think that's,' Adam said and then he yawned, 'a good idea."

We got to mine and Michele's room, I had Adam wait outside

"So did you see our robber?" Michele asked with her arms crossed.

"Yep,' I said to her and then yelled to Adam, 'Come on in."

"GORDON!" Michele yelled at me as she drew the covers up. Adam walked into the room. "Adam? You're the robber?" she asked.

"I guess so, I dropped a glass in the sink, I'm sorry, mom," Adam said.

"That's okay sweetheart, it's just a glass, no harm no foul," Michele said.

"Okay I did clean it up through," Adam said.

"Thank you, sweetheart," Michele said.

"Okay, Good night mom, Good night dad," Adam said

"Good night, Adam," We said together and then he left to go back to his room.

I climbed into bed, kissed my wife, and said "Goodnight, Michele."

"Goodnight, Gordon," Michele said and turned off the light. Not even 30 seconds passed between the light going off and the next sentence coming out of Michele's mouth. "Did he just call me mom?"

"Yes, he did, just like he called me dad earlier. Are you happy?" I asked.

"Hmm, very much so, Goodnight Gordon," Michele said.

"Goodnight," I said.
