Cap's Assignment

(Steve POV)

It's been three years since Washington, when not only Hydra fell but Shield fell too. Ever since then Steve knew Hydra was still out there lurking in the shadows, trying to find another way to profit war. He knew it wouldn't go away just because Shield fell and Natasha releasing all of Shield's and Hydra's dirty laundry...lucky for Steve he was squeaky clean, he had nothing to hide. Fury has been trying to take down Hydra once and for all, for revenge. He dedicated his life to Shield and for it to be revealed that he was actually working for the bad guys he took it hard, they tried to kill him, his own friend Alexander Pierce, who he had known for years was the one that arranged the hit on him.

(Flashback: 1 years earlier)

Steve has been on the run from the CIA and practically everyone for a year now after he literally dropped his shield and turned away from being Captain America and he has not been the same since. When he dropped that shield he lost a part of him, he knew he was not worthy of that honor anymore and that's what kills him the most...that he let down everyone. What would Erskine think? And now he's become darker, angrier and very bitter, he rarely talks to Sam, Natasha or Wanda. Ever since he woke up from the ice his life has gone to shit, sure he's made some friends along the way and saved the world a couple of times and even though he wouldn't have changed a thing he couldn't be more miserable, alone and just lost. Bucky was on his own and finding his own way back and he no longer had Peggy, he was ashamed of his actions with Tony. Yes, he found out about Bucky killing his parents and should have told him but he didn't know how to break it to him, didn't want him to bare that pain and he didn't have much to go on, he wasn't even sure Bucky was the one that actually did it but that's no excuse, he hurt his friend and there's nothing he can do to fix it. He gave Tony a phone just in case he needed him, he knows Tony will never call him but he wanted to show that the ball is in his court and he bares no anger or resentment towards him.

He is coming home in his tiny apartment, he's been living the life as a vigilantly, stopping crime anywhere he can...it's the only thing he knows to do. He's exhausted and just wants to finally get some sleep...if he's lucky to get some sleep. He can already tell that someone is here, so he prepares himself and he slowly walks into his living room and sitting in his chair is Fury.

"Fury, what are you doing here?" He asks him as he turns on his light.

"I thought I would come see an old friend...I guess being on the run is not much fun." He smugly answer as he looks at the dump he's living in.

"I haven't seen or heard from you since Sokovia..you don't just pop in to say hi...what are you doing here?"

"A proposal."

"What?"

"I want you to come work for me."

"No." Steve quickly responded.

"You don't even know what I want you to do." Fury angrily spoke out.

"I don't care...there is nothing I can do for you, I'm literally on the run, I'm done with the secrecy...and I know what you want to do, you want to rebuild Shield...Nick, it's gone and that's where it needs to stay." Steve sternly told him.

"I know it's gone." Steve could hear the anger in his voice, how angry he was still at the loss of Shield. "I don't want to rebuild Shield...it's far too late for that...and for me... what I want is revenge."

"Revenge?" Steve asked with raised eyebrows, not quite believing him.

"Yes...I want to see Hydra burn...I know they're out there...I know they're trying to rebuild too, I just don't what, how or where...they have to come to an end...and I can't do that without you." Fury explained. "I dedicated my life to Shield...and for what? I lost Coulson and my life is now ruined."

"But..."

"Steve, I know you want revenge too...they stole your life...what about Stark...what about Barnes?

"You didn't let me finish...how do with do this while I'm on the run?"

With anger in his eyes Steve looks over at an old black and white photo he found of him and Bucky, he knows he has a duty to him...they tortured him, ruined him, Bucky will never be the same man that he grew up with...he deserves justice and so does Tony...because of them he lost his parents...their friendship ruined...he also can't help but think about what he's lost...70 years of his life...a life he'll never get back or ever have...they had literally stolen his life.

"Your in? Just like that?" Fury thought he was going to have to persuade him much harder.

"Yes...I want to take everyone of these motherfuckers down...again how do we do this?" Steve asked with intensity in his eyes, Fury gives him a very happy smile.

They are still out there finding bases and taking down anyone they can. They've actually taken down several of them, Sam has been helping them, Steve came to him after teaming with Fury and he was fully on board. Steve was rather shocked that he hasn't been noticed by the CIA or anybody but I guess it does help when you don't even look like yourself anymore, he grew out his hair a bit and has a beard. Fury promised he wouldn't be exposed and he's kept it.

This base they're at now had been very active, they had just missed them, not seeing one person. Steve walks into a room and puts a USB drive into the computer to get any information that they have and he turns and sees dozens of papers, he about to read one but hears commotion outside so he quickly takes the drive out of the computer and grabs all the papers, puts them in his pockets and goes out to see what's going on but when he does it's fine.

"Sam, you okay?" He asks him.

"Yeah, I got 2 guys that were still hiding out." He points to them, they are dead.

"Good...come on, let's get out of here." Steve says. After returning Steve handed over all the papers to Fury and the drive, he began to go over them while Steve and Sam were taking a well needed break but that didn't last long because about an hour later Fury calls him, needing to see him right away. "I take it this is about the papers I found."

"Yes...I knew I hired you for a reason." Fury smiled.

"Well, what are they?"

"They are threaten letters."

"Threaten letters? To who?"

"You know the singer Scarlet Monroe?"

"...Can't say I do."

"Scarlet your going to die, Scarlet your days are numbered, there is no one that can save you, Scarlet there is no where you can run or hide we will get you." Fury reads letter after letter. "They are all like this and each one gets worse and worse."

"That's weird, why would Hydra send these to her?" Steve asked.

"I've been going over the files you copied and I found out why." Fury informs him.

"Why?" He folds his arms in front of him. "After Shield fell one of them went undercover, I don't know what he was doing but he was working under her and through her resources and connections he was able to smuggle anything he wanted, she was constantly going out of the country...but somehow that ended and I think they are pissed about it...I mean they are trying to rebuild...maybe through her that's what they were doing. I think they are also trying to tie up loose ends...two birds with one stone."

"So she had no idea but the smuggling?"

"No, I highly doubt it."

"But that doesn't explain the letters? They've never done this before and they sound so aggressive, like an obsessed fan or something." Steve was so confused.

"I know...I think they are wanting it to look like an obsessed fan...I think she's in danger...and I have a strong feeling that she's around someone that is Hydra...ready to kill her at the right moment...revenge."

"You think there's a mole?" Steve asked.

"Yes." Fury confidently answered.

"But that was 3 years ago, wouldn't they have killed her by now?" Steve asked.

"No...she's way too high profile...and they trying to stay off the grid because of you...slowly rebuilding."

"Well we need to find this guy or them...stop this from happening."

"I agree...Sam and I will do that." Fury told him.

"And me?" Steve asked, he's confused as to why he said only him and Sam.

"You have a different assignment...your her bodyguard."
