Author's notes

*07/01/21

This chapter has been rewritten and edited to match my writing at the present time, stated on the date above. Think of this as an updated chapter 1, with some changes in content and additional stuff I added, but it won't contrast or disrupt the flow of the later chapters I wrote earlier in this story. Though I think you can tell the quality shift, the moment you read chapter 2 and compare to this updated chapter 1.

That's all! And if you're new reader of this story and just chance upon this, I hope you enjoy this unique somewhat-crossover AU setting tale, of NieR and Monster Hunter.

Enjoy!

Author Introduction

Hi! I'm new here and this story is my first fanfic about two games I like.

Basically, it's a crossover of Nier Automata with Monster hunter, specifically its spinoff of Monster Hunter Stories, with the characters from Nier Automata living in the world of Monster hunter.

The main characters from the first Nier game would appear, but not all the characters from both Nier games will have an appearance. Characters from Monster hunter would mostly come from MHST.

So, with this being my first work, expect it to not be top quality. Characters might be too OOC or different from their respective media and in general the story may not be in your liking.

If you don't like it don't read it, but if you do thanks and I hope you enjoy it.

You can leave reviews but no flaming or leaving anything that would cause a negative reaction. I appreciate hearing your thoughts, and depending on your messages, could motivate me to continue writing this story. This Fanfic is start of a new hobby for me and to help distressed and express a bit of creativity. So, expect updates to be slow or random, until I can make a proper schedule.

Another note, the premise of this fic is inspired by the How To Train Your Dragon film series and other media that feature monster taming or team up. The first arc of this fic mainly influences or parodies those media, before diverging to a similar plot from MHST, though much different than the game. With more focus in traveling around the world and facing the black blight, than encountering mechanized monsters like in the original game.

Disclaimer: I do not own Nier, Nier Automata, Monster hunter and their respective characters etc. They are all under their respective owners: Square Enix, Platinum Games, Yoko Taro and Capcom. I don't own the HTTYD franchise or others discreetly a shout-out as well, all rights go to their respective owners like, DreamWorks etc.

That's all and let's get on to the fic. Enjoy!

Everything that lives, is designed to end…

But don't let the finality of our existence, scare you from living your own life…

It's the journey between the beginning and the end, that makes life worth living…

Even when the ending, isn't what you'd expect it to be…

.

But the memories we made together and the stories I've left behind…

Will be with you, until the end of times.

That's why, even when I'm gone…

In a way, I'll always be with you.

-A hunter and a loving sister

Monsters.

Creatures of great power and fantastic living beings of many unimaginable design.

Considered by most locals as dangerous mega-fauna. Gigantic animals tailored to thrive even in the harshest conditions, while possessing some of the most extreme biological adaptions and evolution to survive.

They range from different types and classifications. From the great flying wyverns who rule the sky, to the fanged beast that roam the lands. While leviathans roam the seas and lived below the depths of the oceans. And finally, the elder drakes that hold seemingly nigh-supernatural powers. Draconic creatures many would consider them as god-like beings or eldritch abominations, matching their unbelievable existence.

In a world full of such monsters possessing great power and magnitude, they are who dominate the ecosystem.

Leaving the majority of humans who live beside them, cowering from their might. While those who do not, face and hunt them in defence of Humanity. And they are called...

Monster Hunters.

Warriors with the capacity to fight the great beasts that roam the lands, and besieged their settled territories.

At their base, hunters are physically superhuman, either born with great strength or trained in brutal spartanesque manner to achieve it. Possessing also great skill and martial prowess, to wield a variety of weapons, ranging from blades, hammers, and lances for melee and close quarter combat. To bows and bowguns for ranged and long distance fights. All weapons they wield, used to fight and defend themselves against the wyverns and drakes, they would face in battle.

But at their core, hunters embody the grit and tenacity of humankind. With most Hunters facing their adversaries with unrelenting resolve and a strong will to overcome the impossible. Despite the difference in strength and power Monsters possess, that hunters couldn't hope to match. Yet they triumphant and still be victorious, even with such odds.

Allowing Humanity's survival and their ability to thrive in the deadly world they've lived in.

But not striving for total supremacy against the monsters, instead hunters also fight to keep a delicate balance in between nature and their two kinds. That entails a certain sense of peace and order. Though volatile, due to some bad blood both Monsters and hunters have with each other, born from centuries and lifetimes of animosity between each other.

Yet, order persists in the ecosystem. No matter how bleak, or how both Monsters and Hunters, are lock in an endless cycle of survival: Of to hunt or be hunted.

The world of Monster Hunting is far from perfect and offer a great many dangers. But it does not discourage the inhabitants from living their own way of life around it. Even finding a way to appreciate the danger, with endless thrill and adrenaline excitement, that came living in a fantastical world.

Some even going far to admire the danger they live in, the thrill seekers who enjoy the adrenaline rush in facing the unknown and the creatures of legend. Others couldn't help but be in awe with the Monsters that lived with them too. With many scholars and researchers born to study the mysteries of their monstrous neighbours and the enigma they hold from their existence.

As such, many villages and communities are centered in the way of life that is Monster hunting. With many cultures and societies branching off, found in all corners of the world.

One village, itself considered among the greatest settlements that humanity has ever established.

It, being located within the eastern border of the great Whistill forest, home to many of monsters alike. All dwelling in its territory that encompasses an entire region.

The forest itself, lies just south of a northern mountainous region filled with wintery landscapes. West from green rolling hills where powerful wyverns rule. Near east of a great wide grassy plains that many travellers take path to their destinations. And a just a tad-southeast of the famous hunting capital Guild of the continent, Gildegaran.

There one could find the place, where many have taken as their home.

The Village of YoRHa.

As the sun begins to rise, so does a village begin to wake and welcome it.

Passed its great walls that protects them from their neighbouring monsters and inhabitants of the forest, many establishments and man-made structures built by the village are seen. With most beginning to show signs of activity, just as the forest beside them have cries and bellows heard throughout the sky, signalling the start of a new day.

The village of YoRHa, begins its own cries and unique waking calls, knowing signs of starting another busy morning.

Establishments for market and trade, stores and mobile caravans, are being opened by their owners. The early birds, setting up shop for their day-to-day business. While homes and apartments that are scattered around the village's confines, have many kinds of people waking up from their slumber to join.

One can find in the village of YoRHa, a great deal of diversity in its inhabitants. With different races and individuals from different regions of the continent living together.

Most dominant are the humans and the wyverians, the latter being a unique humanoid race said with the blood of wyverns flowing in their veins and unique features like pointed ears and most possessing digitigrade legs. Coming to a close second were the Lynian races, species mostly consisted of anthropomorphic felines or diminutive humanoids that offer services in the more menial tasks of society. YoRHa also possess races found in other far-reaching places of the world, like those resembling the seafolk in tropical isles and the dwarves dwelling in deep mining villages near volcanoes.

There are also chances, when one individual is found to be either a travelling merchant or a tourist, they are most likely not originating from YoRHa or the continent as a whole.

And YoRHa has just as much different occupations present in their community, as they have a rich mix of people in the village. That one could easily tell, from simply observing them, as they walk by. Especially when everyone looks to be preparing for another busy day in the village:

A blacksmith is starting his forge and setting his crafted weapons at the front. A wyverian wearing a long coat is seen moving to a large building, joining his peers inside as they are revealed to be fellow researchers. A few people dress in robes or light garments are walking in the streets, down to few peddlers pulling their carts with goods. Merchants, who's occupation are one of the most common in YoRHa, begin to advertise their wares and products to fellow passersby. While Armored guards begin their morning patrols around the village, keeping watch of the peace and order.

And at the central square, which was slowly being filled with activity. Had kids playing near its fountain, and wayward travellers intersecting at the crossroads, some no doubt just arriving to the village from the outside.

Of course, among those walking through the streets of the village. One could find YoRHa's most famous commodity and service to its people.

Monster Hunters.

With many individuals wearing different armors and wielding unique weapons, walking down the roads in their parties and teams. Some others being lone hunters or an individual with a partnered palico, their own felyne support companion. Bystanders look in awe at these accomplished warriors, giving welcomed greetings, and even children waving excitedly at the sight of them. With many hunters returning their polite gestures before continue on their way. Moving with purpose, all either heading out on a quest and missions to accomplish.

Or heading to the center of the village— To YoRHa's Hunting Guild.

Their base of operations, where they received their assignments or latest information and intel on the world of Monster hunting. It is also where most individuals having the desire to be top hunters are trained in the ways of hunting monsters. With YoRHa's guild school of hunting, credited of making good results from its recruits. And having the proof to back it up.

Because most Hunters of YoRHa are known to be famous, for being exceptionally skilled. With their motto being:

'To fight for the glory of mankind.'

The creed most hunters of YoRHa would revere with great honor. At times a silent oath, proclaiming to keep fighting the threats that would endanger humanity, with the best of their capabilities. No matter what monster or calamity they would face in the future.

It was also something the village of YoRHa embodies as a whole. The village's ongoing existence, despite the trials and threats it survived through the years, act as a symbol of the tenacity and unwavering resolve of humankind against the unknown calamities that still exist in their world.

In fact YoRHa has survived, nearly 14 village ending threats and continues to do so in the present. A testament of the people's resolve and their hunters forged by the village, who continue to defend humanity no matter the cost.

Thus, it is not rare to hear from neighbouring villages the exploits of the famed 'YoRHa Hunters'. With many would-be beginner hunters, from different regions, travelling to YoRHa for the chance to be like one of them and famed throughout the land.

Even Gildegaran, the main Guild branch of the continent, outsources hunters from YoRHa for their own missions and quests. And lately, with many of their star members actually having some bearings in YoRHa.

As such, ever since its founding and until the present day, there is no shortage of individuals who aspire to be like the hunters of YoRHa.

Just like one certain individual, who longs for the recognition and of being accepted by the village.

Pass the main village and away from the busy ongoings in the main area of YoRHa, there lies a peaceful patch of land.

Not as developed as the other residential areas in the village, even having a few small hill adorning its landscape. Right on top of one hill is a two-story house, the view of the building overlooking a part of the village. With the top portion of the house being an attic like room, where sunlight passes inside through a circular window.

Peering indoors, with the shining rays of day fills the room. Illuminating the insides, and various furnishing and items. Common things like a bedding, a closet full of clothes, and a carpet on the floor.

There were also bookshelves filled with various types of books, mostly about hunter related literature, manuals and possibly every monsterpedia that the guild has published. Some that are neatly stacked on the floor, left behind from a previous night of reading.

And near their proximity, was a work bench with various tools, either laid out on the table or kept on a personal hanging rack. While blueprints and half-finished crafted devices and items are sprawled over the table top as well. Beside it was a large wooden box, most commonly known as hunter's item box, storing a number of materials and items stored within.

Based on the room contents alone, no doubt the owner was also interested and involved in the monster hunting life.

Said owner being the young adolescence boy, sleeping on his bed and wrapped in his tangled sheets. He laid sprawled on his bed and showing signs of tossing and turning in his slumber. No sign of waking, despite his involuntary movements.

The boy's facial features are then revealed as he pushes his sheets away, revealing his head and short white hair, while also sporting pale skin. The young boy, currently held a soft and peaceful expression on his face. If it weren't for his subtle moving, one would have mistaken the boy's appearance for a lifelike doll, well-crafted and pristine. Remaining content in his peaceful slumber.

Until suddenly, the loud sounds of bells ringing are heard. Echoing throughout the village, reaching the house and to the boy's ears.

He awakens, jerking his eyes open, with pupils of a calming shade of blue, suddenly finding themselves staring at the ceiling. But before the boy could shift to a sitting position and turn his attention to the sounds of the bells outside his home, the door to his room opens and another individual enters with a warm greeting.

"Good morning, Meowster!"

It was a black furred felyne, with red stripe-like markings, that called to the boy from his door. The felyne was female, and spoke with a gentle caring tone, not unlike how a mother would when speaking with her own child. Which the boy recognised instantly, knowing who it was.

With a small yawn in between, the boy returns the greeting. "Oh. Good…haauuh… morning."

He turns to face the entrance of his room, spotting the felyne. "You're up early as usual. Pod."

The boy says to the said felyne, Pod. A nickname and short for Pod 153, the female felyne's name. Plus, from simply looking at Pod 153, the boy can't help having a fond look etched on his face upon seeing her.

Pod 153 has been his designated caretaker ever since the first day they've met. And hopefully in the future, would be acting as his partnered hunting Palico as well.

They were also very close, best of friends really. And despite Pod 153's caretaker position towards the boy, the two often play games or spend time together during the early days of their friendship. They were always seen running around YoRHa having fun.

If anything, Pod 153 was one of the few individuals the boy would consider close to his heart.

Though if one would ask why the odd name though, why Pod 153? It's because, as the boy learned one day when he asked, Pod 153's name came about due to a tradition from the island home she originated from.

Related to some famous legendary heroic felyne group called 'The Numbers'. Which the local felynes of the island, have taken tradition of naming their next generation of kin in a similar manner to honor of them. With added words or changes, and special meanings behind the numerical names given to them.

Still, it didn't matter how odd Pod's name was to the boy, seeing that his generation had a similar odd naming theme as well.

"Meowster 9S." Pod 153 says the boy's name out loud, addressing her meowster.

And yes, that was the boy's name. 9S.

The name that was given to him or what he recalls it of being. Odd, but not out of the ordinary compared to other kids in his generation. There was an obscure tradition or a trend, in their world that led to their names being composed of numbers and letters, while having hidden meanings behind them. Regardless of the reasons to why he was named as such, it didn't matter much to 9S. Only that it was his name and only his, given to him by his parents.

Though close friends and family can call him Nines, too.

A precious nickname the boy cherish, since it was made by another person he holds dearly. 9S couldn't help remembering a fond memory, upon thinking of the person.

"Meowster, you're zoning out again." Pod 153 suddenly cuts in, bringing 9S from his thoughts. "Have you've been staying up late again? You know that's not good for your health. And how would you grow up as tall as Meowster 2B and A2, if you don't get enough sleep at this rate?"

"W-What… I wasn't! It's still the morning Pod. So I'm little groggy." 9S replied, trying not to feel embarrassed that he was caught spacing out. He also adds a bit indignantly. "And I'm a boy of average height, plus 2B and A2 wear heels! We're practically the same height if they're not wearing them."

Pod 153 shakes her head in knowing dismissal. "Not really meowster, You still have a few inches to grow before Meowster A2 stops teasing you."

9S huffily turns away, childishly with a pout. Before his ears train on the sounds outside his room, faintly hearing other noises of people shuffling within the house.

He asked. "Hey Pod, why did you wake me up? And are the others up too? I don't recall anything planned today… or this early in the morning…"

"Oh Meowster! I almost forgot. I bet you've heard of the bells ringing, right?"

"I did. Did something happen or is something wrong?" 9S asked. "I know the village only rings the bells in case of emergency or some important event." He got out of bed and started looking for a change of clothes. Seeing that whatever commotion is happening at the present, he might as well get dressed.

Pod 153 began to help him as well, while replying back. "It is a call for an emergency meeting. But the cause is still unknown and chief Zinnia wants us to head to the guild to find out what it is."

"It's probably something to do with the recent disturbances the forest is having lately. I remember hearing about it around the village gossip and the hunters from the guild." 9S answered back, finding a black shirt and a leather vest form his wardrobe, while changing to a pair of outdoor trousers that Pod hands over to him shortly.

He then begins glancing around his room, looking for something.

It was fortunate that 9S was also a tidy person and a bit of neat freak, keeping his room orderly most of the time, with unkept books on the floor and his workstation being the exception. Making it easier for him to find the object he was looking for, which was on his bed, tucked away under his pillow.

Grabbing said item into his hands, reveals that it was a black choker, with an intricate design.

Unique and much different from other normal chokers one would find in a store. There was a bright sapphire gem at the center, with two serpent like dragon heads from either side facing the gem. Their maws open, designed as if they were carrying the stone in their mouths. At the end of each side of the choker was their tails, acting as the lock mechanism whenever 9S wears it.

The unique choker was something precious to 9S, it being a family heirloom and a memento of his past and his parents. Putting it on, 9S felt complete and he didn't have to worry about losing it if he were to get into battle or a rough patch. The choker was well crafted and wouldn't get loose or fall from his person if he were in danger. If anything, 9S notes that it could possibly be a small armor equipment besides being a unique accessory.

Turning his attention back to Pod, 9S asked. "So, if you're here waking me up… does that mean I'll be going as well? Does that mean Zinnia's going to let me in, on their guild meetings?" He held a grin, while trying to contain the excitement in his voice.

"Perceptive as always, Meowster." Pod 153 said with hint of pride, before changing to an urgent tone. "But we must head off now, the others might be done getting ready and must be waiting for us now."

At that moment different yell was heard outside the door.

"Pod! Is 9S awake! We're gonna leave him if he doesn't get his ass here this instant!"

"And that's A2. She seems cranky this morning." 9S deadpanned with a shake of his head. "She must have woken on the wrong side of her bed today."

"Probably, but meowster A2 wasn't always a morning person in the first place." Pod 153 adds.

9S checks his room again and finds his hunting knife buried under some of his blueprints on his work bench.

For a moment he spots his design for a new hunting tool, which he hopes would be useful for hunters in the future. Maybe during their hunts or even be standardized as well.

It was a secret project he had for quite some time. And hopefully, it wouldn't end up like his other failed tools. 9S hopes Jackass has made the first batch of prototypes and are in the research center ready for testing.

"Pod! Nines!" Another yell came, but from a different voice calling for them. Recognizing it as well, 9S swiftly goes out his room with Pod 153 tailing behind.

Shouting his reply. "We're coming down!" As he and Pod made their way to the entrance of their house.

While 9S doesn't know what is happening to the village, the prospect of being involved had him getting excited. He could feel that today was going to be something special.

He knew it in his gut too.

As 9S and Pod 153 rush out of the house, they are met by 4 figures. All individuals they knew and are familiar with.

"For second I thought Pod was still trying to pry you off your work bench, for falling asleep or something."

"About time. Nines, were you up late again last night?"

Two individuals speak up, turning 9S's attention towards them.

They were both women—or rather mature looking teenage girls, who looked to be a year or two older than 9S. Both were wearing the standard female hunter armor beginners would wear, while holding their respective helmets in their arms; leaving their face and facial features exposed.

And with a single look, one could tell the two were twins.

Both girls having the same face, and a beauty mark on the side of their lower left cheek. The two also possessing a darker shade of blue eyes than 9S, and also white hair but with a light hue of blonde among their bangs. But the differences between the twins' appearances, begin with the length of their hair. With one twin having long hair that is currently hanging loose and length easily passing her shoulders. While the other twin was the opposite, possessing a shorter length of hair that reaches her neck, and resembling a bob style haircut. While also wearing a black ribbon, tied on top of her head acting as a head band.

Their names were A2 and 2B.

With A2 being the long-haired older twin and 2B being the short-haired younger twin. And their current expressions etched on their faces, also helps differentiate the twins from each other; offering an idea of their slightly contrasting personalities from one another.

A2 had a slightly irritated look directed at 9S, which the boy thinks is a normal occurrence. Due to knowing of her more temperamental personality, but with a hidden soft side underneath. 2B had a more stoic and indifferent sort of demeanor, reflecting a more compose personality. Yet 9S knows behind her expression holds a calm and sensitive individual.

9S greets the two enthusiastically. "2B, A2, Morning!"

Receiving similar greetings in return.

"Morning Nines."

"Yeah, morning… or whatever."

He was close with both of the twins. Though, 9S would admittedly say he was much closer with 2B, for various reasons… that others would end up using to tease him of having a crush with her.

Which was not far from the truth, since not only was 2B beautiful but she was also a caring and fun individual to hang out with. If one got to know her like 9S did, hence his not-so-subtle attraction to the younger twin.

A2 on the other hand, 9S had a more sibling like relation with her. Bickering constantly or teasing each other, while having small moments that both won't admit, felt like they were a brother and sister bonding type of thing. Still, despite his feelings of the two, 9S does consider them as family he was glad to have.

Even when most days start with some mild bantering with A2.

"Why are you so chipper in the morning? Here I thought, if I'm waking up early to go to a boring meeting, I'd at least be happy to know we'll all be suffering together… and not leaving one behind to laze all day." A2 said with a roll of her eyes, clearly still cranky for waking up early in the morning.

"And miss the chance to be part of an emergency meeting? No way A2." 9S said in gusto.

A2 shakes her head with exasperation, before replying to 9S. "Only you would find a meeting exciting and fun to do."

2B speaks up, reminding her sister. "The meeting could be important and as hunters to be, we need to be informed so we can act accordingly to whatever orders the guild will give us. Better be informed than blindly heading into battle…"

"Yes, meowster 2B speaks the truth." Another individual of the four speaks up, agreeing with 2B. "We still don't know what this meeting is for. Better be vigilant in case we are needed."

Standing near the feet of the twin hunters was another felyne, different from Pod 153. A male cat with white fur and black markings. He also possessed Palico armor and equipment, holding an acorn shape weapon in his paws.

He was Pod 42.

Pod 153's companion and a fellow tribe member from their homeland, also possessing a unique name based on their island home's tradition. And like Pod 153, he was also the designated caretaker of 2B and A2, but also officially acting as their palico. His relationship with the twins are similar to that of 9S and Pod 153, but he's more known to be a deadpan snarker when out hunting with the twins, and occasionally sarcastic despite being a no nonsense felyne.

Evident when he throws a snide remark at A2. "Meowster A2, you of all people should know the importance of being well informed. Less you end up hunting the wrong target or gathering the wrong type of mushroom… again."

"Or forget to read the instructions of a shock trap and end up paralyzing yourself!" Pod 153 adds with amusement.

"Shut it Pods…" A2 scowls at the two felynes, feeling flustered at the mention of her blunders. The others giggled silently to themselves not wanting to anger A2 further. They didn't stop the teasing though.

"Well, its true Meowster. But I must say… not many could hold the same achievement of trapping themselves." Pod 42 says with a playful smirk, much to A2's annoyance. But before the huntress could respond with a violent retort, the last individual of the group steps in before things get too heated.

"Now, now Pods. There's no need to go teasing A2. She may skip over the details at times, but it doesn't mean she doesn't do a good job most of the time."

The last individual who spoke, was a female wearing an eastern style like clothing adorned in floral design, composed of a robed shirt and pants that does not restrict movement. She was also a wyverian, possessing the signature pointed ears of her race. But unlike others of her kind, she didn't possess digitigrade legs and instead having feet resembling humans. She also has bright grey eyes and shoulder length blond hair. And if one would look afar, her hair color would have been mistaken for the color of a sunflower.

This was Zinnia, the village chief of YoRHa and its founder. A sunny and cheerful individual, like her namesake. But also be a brilliant leader and diligent individual when it comes to village matters.

She was also 9S, 2B and A2's official guardian. Someone the three consider akin to a surrogate parent, who adopted them as well. Motherly and overprotective at times, she loves her charges dearly. Despite them not being her own blood or from knowing of the circumstances that led to them to be under her care.

She's grown to be amused at the antics of her kids, no matter how dangerous or heart attacking their antics could be.

"Now that 9S and Pod 153 is here. Its best we head now to the village, correct?" Zinnia said to the group, reminding them.

And as if on cue the bells of the village begin to ring once more. Prompting all six individuals to start heading off to YoRHa.

9S couldn't help speaking his excitement. "I know I shouldn't feel this way, since it might be an emergency. But I'm glad I'm coming along with you guys to the guild! It beats staying back and trying new combo recipes all day."

"Aww… tired of stuff blowing up in your face? Though better in your face than the village. Ancients know how YoRHa is still standing despite your shenanigans." A2 teased with 9S miffed from the remarked before grinning.

He retorts. "I at least know how to follow instructions, and not fail in making dung bomb combinations. I doubt your room could handle another dung bomb explosion too."

"You little shit! I know that was one of your pranks!" A2 bites back remembering that particular memory.

"All I did was give you the casing. You're the one who ended up sleeping in shi—Ah!"

9S was cutoff due to A2 bringing his head into a chokehold under one of her arms. "Admit it! Those casings were tampered, and you did it to get back at me for accidentally killing your thunder bugs!"

A2 argues. "I told you it was an accident! Do you know how piss I was, waking up smelling like shit for a week!?"

"I didn't tamper with the casings since I don't craft like an idiot!" 9S fought back, getting out of A2 hold and began wrestling with the woman. "And you killed N1 and N2 too! They were my breeding pair! They were going to supply us with nearly a limitless supply of thunder bugs!"

9S adds, heatedly pointing out. "They and their children died because someone, didn't know what's the difference between a Pitfall trap and a shock trap!"

A2 responds, arguing. "Like I said it was an accident!"

"Your face is an accident!"

"You did not just say that! I have the same face with 2B!"

The two continue to rough house, childishly batting their hands at each other's faces, until 2B pushes both A2 and 9S off from each other.

"Enough! Must you two aggravate each other early in the morning?" 2B said with a stern voice at the two. She had a hint of an exasperated look on her face too, since this was a common occurrence between 9S and A2. With them often arguing and bickering with each other. Even at the smallest details.

"She started it!" 9S said, childishly glaring at A2, who returns with her on glare.

"And did you have to respond and aggravate her further." 2B raised an eyebrow at 9S, making him turn away with pout.

"…No"

2B then turns to her sister. "And A2, you know 9S wouldn't mess around with his tools or crafting. He knows too well of how easy it is to hurt oneself accidentally from poor management."

"Well not with his tools…" She replies looking over 2B's shoulder scowling at 9S, who sticks his tongue at her. A2 responds with the same gesture, with both of them acting like toddlers and throwing their tongues out at each other, annoying 2B further.

"Okay, knock it off. Both of you. I mean it!" 2B glared at both of them. Making 9S and A2 stop at their silent bickering. They glance at each other, before looking at 2B and then facing away from each other with audible grunts.

2B was as strict as she is stoic in battle. And is known normally as the disciplinarian of the household. Everyone in the household had at least experienced a scolding from 2B, throughout their entire time together; including Zinnia. It was rare for 2B to be in the receiving end of someone's scolding, and it would only be because of an honest mistake. Not like the antics of the rest of her family. And yes, again including Zinnia, since the wyverian chief could be aloof at times.

"Now both of you apologize to each other and let's go on our way". 2B said as she steps away between them.

"WHAT!" Both 9S and A2 respond at the same time. Before turning to each other and glaring.

"WHY DO I HAVE TO APOLOGIZE!" They both responded in Unison.

Zinnia was quick to support 2B. "Now, Now, you two. Best make peace and not escalate anything further." Normally, they wyverian would be watching the scene in amusement and letting the two eventually work it out themselves, but with the village bells ringing, they had more pressing matters to focus on.

"Now hurry up and apologize to each other and let's go, the bells are being rung again so there must be a change in our situation." Zinnia says in more serious tone.

"I agree with Meowster Zinnia, it is imperative we proceed to the village as soon as possible." Pod 42 chimes agreeing, while pointing out. "There is a presence in the air."

Pod 153 supports, sensing it as well. "I feel what Pod 42 is feeling, so hurry up Meowster and make up with A2."

"Is this really necessary?" A2 asked exasperatedly, with 9S nodding in agreement.

"Do it. If you two don't apologize to each other right now, I will cut both of your hunter training schedules. I'm raising all of you to be good characters, so I'll do whatever is necessary to discipline you two." Said Zinnia in a threatening tone.

Both 9S and A2 are taken a back form her threat and know that it would hinder both of them from becoming hunters. Also, the stares from the others were egging them on, forcing both 9S and A2 to look at each and sigh in exasperation.

"And hug it out too!" Zinnia adds with no room for arguments.

9S and A2 simply grumble in response, before getting it over with. Sliding to up to each other, wrapping their arms around their shoulders and then apologize to each other at the same time.

"I'm sorry."

After a short moment, 9S offer wearily to A2. "If you don't mind. I can tutor you in the crafting… and help you in some areas you don't understand."

A2 responds timidly. "If its not too much trouble…"

She also makes an offer in turn. "Also, I can find you some new thunder bugs to breed or whatever. A N3 and N4 if you like."

"I do…"

9S patted A2's back and the latter petting his head, before the two separated. Much to the content of the rest of their group.

Happy seeing her kids making peace, Zinnia turns their attention back to heading to the village. "Good now let's go, we still need 2B and A2 to get their weapons from Masamune, he said he would be finished with their maintenance today."

"You two might need them, since we need both of you to be fully equip for whatever disturbance is coming to the village." Zinnia adds, as they resume their walk to YoRHa.

Both A2 and 2B then equip their helms, with 9S walking alongside them and began some light conversation with the twins. The Pods were right at their sides and Zinnia following her kids right behind them.

Shortly after entering the village grounds, Zinnia had the group head straight towards the blacksmith shop.

And there, they greet Masamune, the resident Blacksmith of YoRHa.

He was a famed blacksmith known throughout their land and appears as a large individual in a samurai like attire, with a helmet covering his face. It was said he once forged an impossibly long blade belonging to a legendary silver haired warrior. And he crafted an equally powerful weapon for a famous soldier, a great sword that could hold the dreams and hopes of soldiers. Regardless, if the stories were true or not, Masamune's smithing and armory crafting skills, were exemplary. He was always the smithy to look for, if one would want an excellent weapon to face monsters.

He leads A2 and 2B inside his shop to retrieve their weapons. While Zinnia, 9S and the pods remain outside, not wanting to be near the heat of the forge inside the shop. Though the wyverian chief and her posse could still see 2B and A2 clearly inside the armory, equipping their respective weapons.

Both 2B and A2 chose to practice and wield the long sword as their main weapon, and their equipment are specially forged from unique monster materials. Not what most trainees have to start with, which was the standard basic iron weapons the guild supplies to beginner hunters. But 2B and A2 are a unique case, with their weapons being supplied by Masamune. Who always had an eye for talent, and after being impressed from witnessing their skills with a blade, decided to gift the twins with longswords that complements them.

From her spot outside, Zinnia and 9S could spot those gifts the old blacksmith has for the girls.

The first was 2B's weapon, which was called the Hidden blade, a longsword with unparallel sharpness. It was a sword as black as night, made from Nargacuga materials, black quadruped pseudo flying wyverns with sharp wings and known for their agility. Then came A2's weapon, called the Tiger Katana. Designed with the orange and blue striped pattern of another monster called a Tigrex; and with the blade also forged from its own materials, allows the wielder to channel the quadruped pseudo flying wyvern's strength and ferocity.

Zinnia couldn't help but feel the longswords, and the monsters who's materials were used to craft them, match well with the personalities of 2B and A2, respectively. The wyverian chief also felt a bit of pride, seeing how much 2B and A2 have grown and made their way to their roles as hunters, since the day she first adopted them.

The village chief couldn't help reminiscing about the twins, remembering that they were young orphans who lost their home and original family from a monster attack. Which unfortunately is not an uncommon occurrence in a world full of monsters and hunters battling it out. With children forced to face the harsh reality of the world they lived in, and suddenly losing their innocence, it being tarnished too early.

When no one wanted to take them in, for various idiotic reasons that makes her blood boil, Zinnia decided to keep 2B and A2 for herself and did her best to give them a happy life. Fortunately, she succeeded to a certain degree.

Seeing that inside the Blacksmith shop, there stood two proud would-be-hunters. Who were also inspiring another of their charge to be like them.

At the corner of her eye, Zinnia knowingly spied 9S being a bit skittish and wanting to enter the Masamune's shop as well.

As they wyverian predicted, he asked. "Can I get a weapon too?"

"Hm…" Zinnia turns to 9S, focusing her full attention to the boy beside her. Knowing it was a familiar topic broached. That lately, was constantly being brought up.

She gave the same answer to 9S, like she did with his past inquiries. "No, I don't think your ready yet for combat. More so in the village, you might cause an accident. Or err… a bigger accident."

9S huffily defends himself. "Hey! I don't cause accidents all the time! The most would be from a failed combo recipe or something…"

He trailed off, while Zinnia continue looks to look skeptical.

The wyverian chief couldn't help bringing up an example with amusement. "Something… like a failed bug repellant? That attracted a swarm of thunder bugs invading the marketplace?"

9S stiffened, turning away, and whispering. "One time…"

"…Then being invaded by a bunch of Gargwas?"

Zinnia began to giggle, while 9S starts to blush while trying to defend himself.

"We got a profit from Gargwa feathers and meat products didn't we…"

"But then, you tried to lead them away in Gargwa suit… hehe… before being chased by a Zinogre, because of the Thunder bugs and Gargwas…Ha ha!"

"That didn't HAPPEN! You're just making things up now—Stop laughing!"

At this point Zinnia wasn't hiding her laughter anymore. Before she paused then looked at 9S straight in the eye. "Your right…"

"You were chased by A2 thinking you were a real Gargwa around town."

"…"

"Pfft…. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…" Zinnia began to belly laugh, with the pods joining in.

"YOU guys, were running around like some headless Jaggis…HAHAHA!" Laughing hard, they wyverian chief nearly bowled herself to the ground, clutching her stomach.

9S covers his faced in his hands trying hide his blush, ignoring the weird looks some passerby were giving them, for witnessing the odd sight of their chief laughing heartily.

Flustered, 9S asked Zinnia. "How did you? Who told you"—

"Haha…2B found out…ha…told me…ha…before chasing after you too…. That time" Zinnia struggled to answer, as she tries to catch her breath. The pods as well have recovered while 9S dragged a palm down his face.

He groans "Uhhhh…Who else knows?"

"Just a few villagers, though it has become part of YoRHa village's 7 phenomenon. The talking Gargwa…or that's what they call it." Zinnia emphasized the latter of her statement with her fingers doing a quotation mark gesture.

"Just. Ugh. Really?" Briefly, 9S shakes his head in disbelief, before returning to his original question to Zinnia. "Never mind, tell me why I can't be armed, while 2B and A2 can?"

Zinnia answers explaining. "One, today at most, we might be just meeting with the other leaders of YoRHa and the guild. To deal with that growing disturbance in the forest getting closer to the village. While 2B and A2 might be sent to investigate with some hunters. It could be something serious, since we are having an emergency meeting, but I doubt it would be something more."

9S counters. "But it could be! We have might have to slay a monster today since it getting close to the village, right?" He also adds. "Also, Anemone was teaching me for the past half of the year, and now I know how to use an insect glaive!"

"Yes, that is partly true…" Zinnia replies, with a brief pondering look, before pointing out to her charge. "But Anemone just started your hunter training for the past 3 months, and I heard you just recently learned how to use a glaive."

"Yeah"— 9S tries to add, but Zinnia cuts him off.

"Without hitting your head one or two times. And landing in a barrel or a pitfall trap"

9S flinches while recalling his past experience of learning how to use an insect glaive. Still, he tries to convince Zinnia. "Eh…but I'm getting good at it and the kinsect doesn't feel uncomfortable anymore…"

Zinnia isn't convinced, not giving her approval.

Defeated, 9S asked. "If I'm not participating in anything besides a meeting, then why did you bring me with you guys in the first place?"

"Sorry Nines." Zinnia had apologetic look before explaining. "You're not ready yet, and its still too soon for you to do combat. I thought you were excited of joining our meetings, which is why I decided to bring you along. So you can stay with me and observe how experience hunters are at work and how Guild operations are done, to help you gain experience for your hunter training. You understand, right?"

"I know… I get it." Hearing that, 9S turns away with a downcast expression.

Seeing the boy down, made Zinnia feel a bit guilty for telling him of her intentions and dashing his hopes up for the day, seeing how it's not what he expected it to be.

9S was always a unique case to Zinnia, and much different among her other charges.

He was always the most expressive one in her adopted brood, since both 2B and A2 are usually more reserve, even with A2's temper at times. He would brighten at the simplest things or when something peaks his boundless curiosity. A trait which she finds amusing and with 2B, sees it a bit endearing. It was easy to tell, too when the boy was happy, whenever he had a bright smile etched on his face and having an approachable demeanor. Also when he's sad, 9S would look like a drop poogie staring at you with teary puppy eyes.

Zinnia could tell, even without looking at 9S, that the boy was doing the latter at the present. Despite his head facing the ground.

Seeing her boy with a sad expression, even during the times he is being scolded, was hard for Zinnia to stomached due to her motherly nature. Which is why she leaves the scolding to 2B. Since she can stare at his 'bright baby blue eyes', without caving in most of the times. Though, it leaves Zinnia consoling the poor girl, listening and comforting 2B whenever she asks if she was too harsh or too cold in scolding 9S.

But the reason why Zinnia couldn't help but feel a deep sense of sympathy for 9S is due to his origins.

Because like 2B and A2, Zinnia did adopt 9S, in a way. Not officially or even legally, only that 9S came to be under her care, because of the circumstances that came with his arrival in YoRHa.

Specifically, 9S was found by 2B almost two and half years ago. Injured, unconsciousness, and showing signs of surviving a monster attack. And unfortunately when he woke up days later... he had no memory for the past 13 years of his life, except for his name.

As such, when Zinnia and the others in YoRHa tried to find out his identity, and even cross referenced reports of villages or searching for individuals who have an inkling of knowing 9S, they found nothing.

It was as if 9S himself, suddenly appeared out of nowhere in YoRHa's doorstep.

Causing some unfortunate rumors and mistrust against the boy from the more superstitious villagers. It didn't help when he was found, he was also dressed in an attire no one could recognize and looked like he was raised in the forest. He also acted differently from other kids his age and didn't help that he was meek, timid, and seemingly scared of the world around him at that time. No doubt because of having no memories of who he was. And probably also suffering a bit from his trauma of being attacked, while having an identity crisis.

As a result, it was hard for the village to approach 9S. Since nobody knew where he came from, or if he came from a village in the first placed. With only 2B, A2, Zinnia and the pods initially being his support, until he grew comfortable around YoRHa and became the boy they know at the present. With him making a few friends, as the village slowly comes to accepting him and his quirky ways.

Though, there was still a distance present between 9S and YoRHa. Something Zinnia knew, no doubt born from his own feelings of his lost past, and the village still seeing him as an enigma—or an outcast, at times.

Hence she understood 9S's desire to be acknowledge for his skills, and deep down wants to be accepted entirely by the village.

9S knew the village looks up to its hunters and believes if he were one, then maybe he can feel accepted as one of YoRHa's famed hunters. Thus making it his goal, to put everything he's got to be one and even trying to create new ways to support other hunters as well. Crafting new things to help hunters and the village as whole, like his bug repellant that Zinnia brought up earlier.

Though, as the wyverian chief also hinted earlier, 9S's unique ideas and experimental hunting tools, mostly ends up being known throughout YoRHa and the Hunter's Guild as his shenanigans. Causing spectacular dangerous scenarios, that could end up destroying the village itself or minor to major accidents if left unchecked. A result due to some technicalities, 9S missed or didn't discover before it was too late.

Which Zinnia remembers, were the boy's frequent excuse for his... blunders.

Still, despite his quirks and the destructive trouble he is associated with, Zinnia had faith in 9S and believed he would do great things. Of course if he is guided properly. She knows her boy will be able to become a great hunter like 2B and A2, as long as he was a little bit more patient and not rushing recklessly.

'Maybe if he followed by example from the twins, then he'd properly make his way into being a fine hunter' Zinnia thought. Which sparked an idea.

Looking at 9S first, and not wanting him to feel down, Zinnia starts to think of a way to cheer him up. Her train of thought reminding her that 9S was a trainee, and despite his training just starting recently, he has already mastered the basics of being a monster hunter and some advance hunting etiquette. And while it may appear biased, Zinnia could assess that 9S's current skill level could allow him to shadow more experience individuals like 2B and A2.

She looks at the twins in the shop and considers it.

If the situation calls for it, and 9S was right that the guild might have YoRHa hunters sent to slay a monster causing the disturbance in the forest, or at least send some to scout it. With 2B and A2 would most likely be part of the party. Joining with an experience hunter, maybe even the Captain Anemone herself. And possibly Zinnia could ask if 9S could shadow them too, since he is also under her care.

Besides Anemone, Zinnia can trust 2B to watch over 9S, and she knows he follows 2B's orders when things get serious. Zinnia can also trust A2 in helping to take care of 9S too, since the older twin would often confide that 'it would be a pain to her, if the idiot gets himself hurt'. If only she could be more honest.

Zinnia then bites her lips, hesitant if she should be allowing 9S to go with 2B and A2, despite the potential danger it would entail for all three of her charges. Or a situation that 9S may not be ready yet.

But then again, knowing 9S, Zinnia wouldn't put it pass the boy to find a way to go on his own, without anyone watching over him. Disobeying orders or acting recklessly without supervision.

Heck, 9S goes out in the forest himself, just to observe the wildlife or gathered materials. It wouldn't be the first time he did something similar, then getting in trouble and scolded by 2B from getting caught wandering Whistill forest. Still, he has proven he could take care of himself, during his excursions and brings Pod 153 along just to alleviate their worries.

And even if Zinnia feels that he could be too curious, reckless, and impulsive for his own good, she knows 9S is a capable individual and would follow instructions to not be a hinderance in a hunt.

So might as well let him go, thought at least with someones watching over him. Which was better than him going off on his own.

Making her decision and plan formulated, Zinnia hopes whatever scolding she gets from White and Anemone in the future won't be too severe, from doing this.

"Okay, Nines here's the deal." Zinnia started, with 9S turning to face her, upon hearing his nickname. She can see his eyes staring at her, not in a puppy dog manner but close to being one in case he has to persuade her.

"If—And that's a Big If! —I let you be with 2B and A2 to shadow them, will you please promise me you won't get in any trouble or do anything that might hinder their work?"

"Wait, really?!" 9S was surprised but he answered with much eagerness. "Oh, Zinnia yes! Yes! I promise!"

Zinnia quickly adds. "And another, promise me that you won't use any of your new inventions or hunter tools."

"What? but—" 9S started to protest showing her his bright baby blue eyes.

"Without adult supervision or unless authority is granted to you!" Zinnia internally groans for making that quick amendment. Still, she pushes forward and salvaging to make some ground rules. "While I know you had some accidents…in the past—"

"Minor technicalities" He grumbled.

"—I know how useful your ideas could be and some of the researchers have—a-are… looking into some of your ideas."

Which is true. To a certain degree. Though Zinnia hopes none of the guild's researchers have made anything yet and are still considering some of them in the planning stages.

"But if you are planning to use any of them, you better ask whoever is in charge or authorized in the research center for permission."

And hopefully not Jackass. Unless of course, if 9S designed an explosive, then Zinnia knows the head researcher of YoRHa would be gung-ho in creating it.

Maybe even prioritize it first than anything else.

There was certain foreboding feeling Zinnia felt in her chest but chose to ignore it.

She doubts 9S and Jackass would have made anything together. Even she knows 9S wouldn't be crazy enough to collaborate with their resident pyromaniac.

Though if worst comes to worst… At least Zinnia knows she did give 9S an ultimatum—Ancients forgive her, but those eyes are too precious—And if somehow he did have a tool approved to be used, then at least someone will be watching over him when he is running around with experimental equipment.

"…Fine" 9S responds with a pout, with Zinnia happy with his compliance.

"Is that a promise?" She teasingly adds.

While he nonchalantly confirms. "Yeah, yeah it is."

"One affirmation would suffice, and you didn't promise…" Zinnia joked ruffling his hair a bit, before he pushes her hand away, playfully from his head.

"Who are you, 2B? Fine… Okay, I promise. Happy now?"

Zinnia nods happily from 9S's answers.

"Can I go to 2B and A2? Might as well tell them."

"Sure, go ahead!" With renewed vigor 9S starts to make his way to the shop. Excited to tell 2B and A2, what Zinnia told him about shadowing both of them.

But as 9S takes a step forward to the door of the smithy, the bells in the village start ringing again. Before a roar is heard, coming directly north from their position.

The ground beneath Zinnia and 9S's feet begins to tremble, while more roars of various monsters are heard. People around them begin to panic or try to regain their footing from the ground shaking.

9S looks up, hearing more roars from the sky, and then seeing wyverns flying over the village. He turns to face Zinnia, who was looking with shock at the massive dust cloud looming above the sky, from the northeast side of the village.

"MEOWSTERS!" Yelled the Pods pointing their paws at one end of the street they were in. They all notice that dust cloud has reached their street and within revealing its cause.

A massive stampede of Monsters of different kinds and species.

Zinnia and the others could see some villagers and hunter scouts running away from the stampede trying to not get caught and warning everyone in front of them.

"STAMPEDE!" A hunter scout yells before everything turned chaotic.

2B and A2 ran out of the shop hearing the commotion, before being push back in by 9S and Zinnia with the Pods following after. Barely missing the stampede almost trampling them.

They all to turn to see the road they were just standing seconds before, now being covered by dust from the monsters charging through and making their way. While watching a few more villagers trying to escape the herd of panicked monsters.

"Tell me you didn't make another type of monster nip, or anything that attracts them?" A2 said to 9S, as she and 2B were recovering from being shoved back inside the shop.

"Not me. Really, you'd would know." 9S deadpanned. Before his expression turns serious and looks at the street with concern. "We need to do something, of the situation outside."

"We need to meet up with Commander White and Captain Anemone. And make a plan of action, for our response to this unexpected event." Zinnia announced as she approached the window of the shop surveying the damage. She can see the stampede has subsided, but the streets are now filled with monsters rampaging in a panic manner, the stragglers no doubt, with some villagers trap in some spaces avoiding the creatures.

"And the villagers? We can't just leave them?"

Hearing 9S, Zinnia turns to the twins.

"2B, A2, remain. I want you two to slay or repel any monster that is in the street and help any villagers that are trapped. Head to the town square and towards the Guild with anyone who is rescued and meet us there. Pods, both of you provide support."

"Understood!" The four replied before heading out of the shop, while 9S was quick to follow. Before Masamune stops him by suddenly dragging him back by the collar of his shirt.

"Hey! —What gives?" 9S turns to Masamune as he lets him go.

"Sorry kid, you don't have a weapon. And I'm not sending any hunter or trainee out there without one, even if you can make damage without one." Replied Masamune in a rough voice. 9S just looks at him incredulously.

"Really Masamune? But Zinnia told me I can go with 2B and A2"—

"Sorry 9S. But change of plans." Zinnia interrupts him. "We need to meet up with the commander and formulate a plan to herd these monsters out of YoRHa. Things got a bit more serious, as you expected. But I need you with me." She adds with a look that said no arguments.

9S relents knowing the circumstances and begins heading to the top of the second floor of the shop. "Fine, I get it."

He turns to Masamune. "Hey, Masamune is it okay we leave through your attic? It's gonna be hard to traverse with all the chaos outside."

"Not a problem kid, you and the chief can make it to the guild hall through the rooftops. Just watch out of any flying wyverns. I'll stay here in case any hunter needs a weapon or a hunting horn tune up." He said before he begins put more fire in his forge, preparing for the worst.

"Thanks!" 9S calls out, while he and Zinnia begin to ascend to the second floor.

"Well, I know our situation is dire, but you can use this opportunity to practice your aerial jumps!" Chimed in Zinnia as they head to the second floor.

"True, but can I at least help in the research center?" 9S spots the attic door and opens it, climbing up.

"Okay, fine. But remember our promise" Zinnia said as they make their way at the rooftop of the smithy shop.

At the roof they can see some parts of the village was on fire, with smoke rising to the sky.

The large dust cloud has subsided, which means that the stampede has ended. But knowing it left the village filled with monsters, as the roars can be all around YoRHa. Zinnia spots the guild hall at the front of the village square. She could spot people are entering for safety, while some hunters are guarding it and forming a blockade to prevent any monsters from entering the halls.

"Glad to know White and Anemone respond quickly." She said before turning to 9S who was looking at the destruction happening around the village. He was deep in thought before Zinnia tap his shoulder.

"So, Quest begin?" She joked.

"Yeah…let's save the village" He replies with equal mirth, voice tinge with determination.

Authors notes:

The Zinnia in this story is different from the one in the lore of Nier Automata. Though she was based on him and reference to him as well. She is my OC that I made. With her appearance as a blonde wyverian with floral theme clothing to reflect her being named from flowers/sun flowers.

The lore Zinnia also exist in NieR: MHST and would be referenced in later chapters. He would also have a connection with my OC Zinnia.

Some action would be in the next chapter and more character introductions.
