Chapter Five has arrived. Hope you guys enjoy this new chapter thank you for all the support.
"Harry Potter." Dumbledore read out loud.
Effy turned and looked at her twin who was sat there stunned. There was no applause, just a buzzing of anger building throughout the Hall. Some students were standing up to get a better look at Harry who was frozen in his seat. He turned and looked at her his eyes wide. "I didn't put my name in." He said blankly. "You know I didn't."
"I know." Effy whispered. "But I think you have to go up there." She glanced behind her to see Dumbledore listening to something Professor McGonagall was whispering in his ear. He nodded and straightened up. "Harry Potter!" He called. "Harry! Up here, if you please!"
"Go on." Hermione whispered giving Harry a slight push.
Effy watched her brother get to his feet and disappear behind the door. She barely heard Dumbledore dismiss everyone, when she found herself on her feet not moving towards the exit, but the door Harry had disappeared behind when someone grabbed her arm.
"Steady lass you can't go in there."
Effy whipped around to see Moody holding her arm. "The hell I can't." She yanked her arm free and stormed through the door. She stopped as everyone in the room, Harry, the three champions, Dumbledore, Madame Maxime, Karkaroff, McGonagall, Snape, Ludo Bagman and Barty Crouch all turned to look at her.
"Miss Potter." McGonagall exclaimed.
Effy ignored her and turned to Dumbledore. "Harry didn't put his name in the goblet."
Dumbledore nodded. "I know Miss Potter."
"So, he's not going to have to compete?" Effy asked hopefully.
Everyone in the room turned to look at Bagman and Crouch. After a slight pause Crouch spoke up. "We must follow the rules, and the rules state clearly that those people whose names come out of the Goblet of Fire are bound to compete in the tournament."
Effy gaped at him looking back to Dumbledore for some objection.
Bagman nodded. "Well, Barty knows the rule book back to front." He turned back to Karkaroff and Madame Maxime like he thought the matter was closed.
Karkaroff had other ideas. "I insist upon resubmitting the names of the rest of my students. You will set up the Goblet of Fire once more and we will continue adding names until each school has two champions. It's only fair Dumbledore."
"Fair!" Effy exclaimed. "There is nothing fair about this!"
"And Karkaroff it doesn't work like that. The Goblet of Fire has just gone out, it won't reignite until the start of the next tournament…"
"In which Durmstrang will most certainly not be competing!" Karkaroff exploded. "After all our meetings and negotiations and compromises, I little expected something of this nature to occur! I have half a mind to leave now!"
"Empty threat, Karkaroff." Moody growled from near the door where he had followed Effy into the room. "You can't leave your champion now. He's got to compete. They've all got to compete. Binging magical contract, like Dumbledore said. Convenient, eh?"
Karkaroff balked. "Convenient? I'm afraid I don't understand you, Moody."
Moody squinted at him. "Don't you? It's very simple, Karkaroff. Someone put Potter's name in that goblet knowing he'd have to compete if it came out."
"Evidently someone 'oo wished to give 'Ogwarts two bites at ze apple!" Madame Maxime exclaimed in anger.
Karkaroff nodded. "I quite agree, Madame Maxime." He bowed to her. "I shall be lodging complaints with the Ministry of Magic and the International Confederation of Wizards…"
"If anyone is going to complain, it's Potter." Moody growled. "But… funny thing… I don't hear him saying a word…"
"Why should 'e complain?" Fleur exclaimed, stamping her foot. "E 'as ze chance to compete, 'asn't 'e? We 'ave all been 'oping to be chosen for weeks and weeks! Ze honour for our schools! A thousand Galleons in prize money, zis is a chance many would die for!"
Moody looked at the young girl. "Maybe someone's hoping Potter is going to die for it." He said with the traces of a growl.
Effy walked over to stand by Harry and grabbed his hand. Harry didn't look at her but squeezed her hand.
"Imagining things, am I?" Moody growled. "Seeing things, eh? It was a skilled witch or wizard who put the boy's name in that goblet..."
"Ah, what evidence is zere of zat?" Madame Maxime threw up her huge hands in exasperation.
"Because they hoodwinked a very powerful magical object! It would have needed an exceptionally strong Confundus Charm to bamboozle that goblet into forgetting that only three schools compete in the tournament. I'm guessing they submitted Potter's name under a fourth school, to make sure he was the only one in his category."
"You seem to have given this a great deal of thought, Moody." Karkaroff snapped at Moody coldly and Effy couldn't help but agree with him. "And a very ingenious theory it is — though of course, I heard you recently got it into your head that one of your birthday presents contained a cunningly disguised basilisk egg and smashed it to pieces before realizing it was a carriage clock. So, you'll understand if we don't take you entirely seriously."
"There are those who'll turn innocent occasions to their advantage." Moody retorted in a menacing voice. "It's my job to think the way Dark wizards do, Karkaroff, as you ought to remember."
"Alastor!" said Dumbledore warningly and Moody fell silent.
"How this situation arose, we do not know." Dumbledore calmly addressed the room. "It seems to me, however, that we have no choice but to accept it. Both Cedric and Harry have been chosen to compete in the Tournament. This, therefore, they will do…"
"Ah, but Dumbly-dorr…"
"My dear Madame Maxime, if you have an alternative, I would be delighted to hear it." Dumbledore turned to Madame Maxime, but she didn't appear to have an answer for them.
"Well, shall we crack on, then?" Bagman rubbed his hands together, smiling around the room. "Got to give our champions their instructions, haven't we? Barty, want to do the honours?"
Mr. Crouch seemed to come out of a deep reverie. "Yes instructions. Yes... the first task..." He caught sight of Effy and cleared his throat.
Everyone turned to look at her. "Miss Potter, would you kindly wait outside please?" Dumbledore asked her.
Effy nodded. "Right, er… I'll be outside." She let go of Harry's hand and left the room leaning against the wall and put her head in her hands. What were they going to do? She knew something like this was going to happen.
Minutes passed and then people started leaving the room and finally Harry and Cedric left.
"Hey." Effy straightened up and then glanced at Cedric. "Er… Congratulations Cedric, you'll make a great champion."
"Thanks." Cedric nodded. "So…" He looked at Harry. "We're playing against each other again." He said as they started walking.
"I s'pose." Harry shrugged.
"So how did you get your name?" Cedric asked him.
Harry sighed. "I didn't." He stared up at him. "I didn't put it in. I was telling the truth."
Effy nodded. "He's not lying Cedric. He can't lie, he goes bright red and stammers it's super embarrassing." She rolled her eyes.
"Ah, okay." Cedric nodded but it was clear he didn't believe them. "Well, see you then." He gave a small wave and instead of going up the marble staircase he headed for a door to its right. Harry and Effy stood and listened to him go down the stairs beyond before making their way up the steps together.
"Are you, Ron and Hermione going to be the only ones who believe me?" Harry asked.
Effy sighed. "Probably. Well and Dumbledore."
Harry nodded. "Do you think someone would put my name in the goblet to kill me?"
"Yeah." Effy glanced up at him. "It's you Harry."
"What am I going to do Effy?" Harry asked her.
"I don't know Harry." Effy shook her head. "But we will figure this out, we always do." She promised him.
Harry nodded. "Thanks."
The twins reached the portrait of the Fat Lady where she was sat with her friend Violet.
"Well, well, well. Violet has just told me everything. Who's been chosen as school champion, then?"
"Balderdash." Harry said with as little enthusiasm as possible.
"It most certainly isn't!" Violet said indignantly.
The Fat Lady shook her head. "No, no, Vi, it's the password." She explained soothingly and the portrait swung open to let the Potter twins into the common room.
An explosion of noise almost knocked the twins backwards and then Harry was grabbed by several pairs of hands and wrenched into the common room by about a dozen pairs of hands and came face to face with the whole of Gryffindor House, all of whom were screaming, applauding and whistling.
Effy followed behind them and looked around at everyone. She watched as people crowded around her brother and harass him. She pulled out her wand and pointed it in the air producing a loud bang that caused instant silence. Everyone stared at her but the expression on her face clearly said everything because the crowd began to disperse.
"Thank you." Harry mouthed to her before heading up the stairs to the boy's dormitory.
Effy marched across the room and up the stairs to the girl's dorm and kicked the door open to find Hermione sat up in her bed, waiting. "Hi." Effy said.
"Hi." Hermione said back.
Effy walked over and flopped onto the bed. "He didn't do it Hermione."
"I know." Hermione nodded her head. "Of course, I know that."
Effy suddenly felt her walls crumble and she couldn't fight back the tears. "What am I going to do Hermione? He could die! I can't lose him Hermione."
"Hey, you're not going to. We'll get him through this." She promised.
Effy sniffed and nodded. "I can't believe they're actually making him do this."
Hermione sighed. "I guess they have to obey the rules."
"The rules are dumb." Effy mumbled.
"Yeah." Hermione agreed. "Come on you should get some sleep, no offence but you look awful." She smiled at her.
"Thanks." Effy laughed. "Night."
"Night."
Effy changed into her pyjamas and climbed into bed, buried herself under her duvet and blankets and fell asleep.
xXx
The next day Hermione woke her up and they went and grabbed a bunch of toast from the Great Hall before going back up and ran back up to the common room only to run into Harry at the portrait.
"Hello." Hermione said. "We brought you this… Want to go for a walk?"
Harry smiled. "Good idea."
The three of them went downstairs and out into the grounds, striding across the lawn to the lake, where the Durmstrang ship was moored, reflected blackly in the water. It was a chilly day and they kept moving to keep warm, munching their toast while Harry with some help from Effy filled Hermione in on what happened last night.
"Well of course I knew you hadn't entered yourself." Hermione rolled her eyes. "The look on your face when Dumbledore read out your name! But the question is, who did put it in? Because Moody's right, Harry I don't think any student could have done it they'd never be able to fool the Goblet or get over Dumbledore's…"
"Have you seen Ron?" Harry asked interrupting Hermione.
Effy and Hermione exchanged a look. They had seen him. Effy had smacked him round the back of the head.
"Erm… yes… he was at breakfast." Hermione nodded.
"Does he still think I entered myself?" Harry kicked at the ground with his foot.
Hermione bit her lip. "Well… No, I don't think so… Not really."
Harry frowned. "What's that supposed to mean, not really?"
"Oh, Harry isn't it obvious? He's jealous!"
"Jealous?" Harry said incredulously. "Jealous of what? He wants to make a prat of himself in front of the whole school, does he?"
Hermione sighed and took a deep breath. "Look it's always you who gets all the attention, you know it is. I know it's not your fault!" She added quickly seeing Harry about to snap. "I know you don't ask for it… but, well, you know, Ron's got all those brothers to compete against at home, and you're his best friend, and you're really famous. He's always shunted to one side whenever people see you, and he puts up with it, and he never mentions it, but I suppose this is just one time too many…"
Effy pressed her lips together. She got where Hermione was coming from, after all most people didn't even realise that she existed. All because their father shoved her into a cupboard while their mother ran with Harry. But she never really cared all that much because she didn't want that attention. It just stung a little bit when she got referred to as the other Potter.
"Great." Harry said bitterly. "Really great. Tell him from me I'll swap any time he wants. Tell him from me he's welcome to it… People gawping at my forehead everywhere I go…"
"I'm not telling him anything." Hermione snapped shortly. "Tell him yourself. It's the only way to sort this out."
Harry scoffed and looked at Effy.
Effy held up her hands. "Don't look at me, I'm not running around after him."
"Neither am I!" He shouted so loudly several birds took off from the nearby tree. "Maybe he'll believe I'm not enjoying myself once I've got my neck broken or…"
"That's not funny." Effy pointed a finger at him. "That's not funny one bit."
Hermione nodded. "She's right. Harry… You know what we've got to do, don't you? Straight away, the moment we get back to the castle?"
Harry scoffed. "Yeah, give Ron a good kick up the…"
"Write to Sirius. You've got to tell him what's happened. He asked you to keep him posted on everything that's going on at Hogwarts. It's almost as if he expected something like this to happen. I brought some parchment and a quill out with me…"
"Come off it." Harry glanced around checking no one was around to overhear. "He came back to the country before my scar twinged…"
Effy raised her hand. "Er excuse me, but your reaction was more than just a freaking twinge."
Harry glared at her. "He'll probably come bursting right into the castle if I tell him someone's entered me in the Triwizard Tournament…"
"He'd want you to tell him." Hermione cut him off. "He's going to find out anyway…"
"How?"
Effy rolled her eyes. "Uh this is a famous tournament and you're super famous. It'll be blasted all over the Daily Prophet about you competing as the fourth champion. Come on Harry you know Sirius would rather hear it from you."
"Okay, okay, I'll write to him." Harry tossed his last piece of toast into the lake.
"Oh shit." Effy exclaimed and fumbled in her bag.
"What?" Harry and Hermione asked.
Effy looked up. "I forgot I had a letter I need to read. You guys go ahead. I'll catch up with you later." She pulled the envelope out of her bag and sat down underneath a tree.
Harry and Hermione left heading up to write a letter to Sirius.
Effy opened Remus's letter.
Dear Euphemia
I would very much like to meet you in Hogsmeade just let me know the date. I'm doing fine thank you.
I don't know much about Alastor Moody so I cannot comment on if his actions are in character for him but I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with his lessons.
In terms of Draco Malfoy, you remind me of your mother when you speak of standing up for him. She would have done the exact same thing. Keep your faith in people Effy sometimes the one thing that can change a person is having someone who has a little faith in them. Your parents and Sirius could have abandoned me when they found out my secret but they didn't and I truly believe that little faith they had in me is what makes me the man I am today.
I understand your feelings of being on a different path to your friends but that doesn't mean it is the wrong path for you or that your paths may converge again later.
Let me know about Hogsmeade.
Love
Remus
"Are they gone?"
Effy jumped and clasped her hand to her chest. "Jesus Christ!" She exclaimed.
Draco dropped down from the tree. "No just me." He sat down next to her. "Who's Jesus Christ?" He asked her.
Effy laughed. "Er… That's a long story." She shook her head. "How long have you been up there?"
"Pretty much the whole time. Wow your brother is really freaking out huh?"
"He's not the only one." Effy said folding up the letter. "I'm just better at internalising it."
Draco nodded. "Do you want to talk about it?"
Effy sighed. "Harry is the only family I have… Well family that actually cares about me and I'm really scared I'm going to lose him."
"You're not going to lose him. Your brother has faced some pretty shit stuff in the last three years I'm sure he'll be fine."
"But he had me then and Ron and Hermione. He's going to be on his own out there and I can't help him. What if something terrible happens?" Effy looked at him with tears in her eyes. "What if something terrible happens and I can't stop it?"
Draco brushed hair out of her face. "It's not. Look they've planned this thing down to the last detail…"
"And all that planning didn't stop my brother being entered into an incredibly dangerous tournament." Effy gripped at her hair.
"Ok you're right. This sucks completely and there are so many things that can go wrong but your brother does have you and Granger on his side. With you two on Team Potter he's got a better chance than all the other champions. You two are the most brilliant people in this school." He reassured her. "So just take all that fear and use it to work out how to help your brother survive this."
Effy glanced at him. "You think so?"
"I know so." Draco smiled at her, taking her hand in his. "I've seen you around the others and you're like the glue that holds everyone together. You are one of the strongest people I know and so brave."
Effy laughed. "I'm really not, I've just mastered acting like I'm brave when in reality I'm terrified." She sighed and shook her head.
Draco frowned. "But isn't courage about like doing something even though you're scared but doing it anyway." He nudged her. "You got this and with you in his corner, your brother is going to be fine."
"Thank you." Effy squeezed his hand.
"Anytime." Draco smiled at her.
Effy wiped at her eyes. "Damn I really thought we were passed me crying on you."
Draco pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket. "Good thing I come well equipped."
Effy accepted it with a small smile and wiped her eyes. "So, I've been thinking about er… the next step if you're interested?"
"Next step in the Effy Potter Plan to make me a better man, I'm ready." Draco nodded.
"Making amends." Effy glanced at him.
Draco nodded. "Yeah, I've been thinking about that too. I just… Don't know how."
Effy nodded. "Be sincere. Tell them you're sorry but expect that that might not be enough, that by being a better person and doing better will show people you really mean it. Forgiveness must be earnt and it's not going to be a quick and easy thing to do. I just want you to be ready that while you might be ready to seek forgiveness it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get it straight away." She explained to him.
"I get that. Anything worth doing is never easy right?" Draco looked down at his hands.
"Yeah. I've been talking with Hermione and er... Well, she's agreed to hear you out." She explained to him.
Draco nodded. "When?"
"I was thinking Thursday evening, after dinner."
"That works."
Effy nodded. "Okay I'll talk to her."
Draco grasped her hand. "Thank you, for giving me a chance." He kissed her knuckles.
"Anytime. Just don't let me down." Effy smiled at him.
"You should know some of the other Slytherins are plotting something. I don't know what I refused to participate but it's going to suck." Draco explained to her.
Effy nodded. "I figured there probably would be something. No one is going to believe him except for a select few. Even Ron isn't talking to him."
Draco nodded. "I know it doesn't count for much right now, but I believe him and I'm behind you in this whole thing."
"Pinkie swear?"
Draco frowned. "I don't know what that means."
Effy smiled. "It's something Harry and I would do when we were kids." She held up her hand. "You link pinkies with the other person." She balled her hand into a fist but kept her pinkie up. "Go on."
Draco linked his pinkie with hers. "Is this some kind of Unbreakable Vow?"
"Kind of." Effy tilted her head to the side.
"Will we die if we break it?"
"No! Why would..." Effy looked astonished.
Draco shrugged. "In the magic version of an unbreakable vow that's what happens."
"Why would anyone do that?" Effy shook her head. "Anyway, no you won't die if you break this vow. I'll just be very sad, and you'll owe me chocolate."
Draco nodded. "Well, I wouldn't want to make you sad. Okay so what are we pinkie swearing to?" He asked rocking her hand back and forth with his own.
"To always be there for each other even when things get hard." Effy smiled at him. "Promise?"
"Promise." Draco nodded his head.
Effy grinned and let go of his hand. "Well, I should head back, or they'll start wondering if I've been eaten by the Giant Squid." She got up and dusted her hands off on her jeans.
Draco got up too. "See you on Thursday?"
Effy nodded. "Can't wait." She waved and left him stood by the lake.
xXx
The week that followed was hell. It seemed like everyone in the school believed Harry had put his name in the Goblet but unlike the Gryffindors they were pissed. Effy remained diligent by Harry's side with Hermione on the other side, but she could tell he was missing Ron who still wasn't speaking to him.
Hermione agreed to the sit down with Draco on Thursday after dinner. So, the three teens met in an empty classroom. Earlier that afternoon Draco and Effy had talked about what he wanted to say to her.
"Hermione I..." Draco paused and took a breath. "I've treated you badly since our first year, I was brought up believing that the muggle world and all those from it were a threat and beneath me... but I've learnt recently that that's not true. I'm sorry for the way I've acted and for the things I've done. I want to do better and be better but I'm aware that words aren't enough, I need to action them."
There was a pause as Hermione looked between her best friend and Malfoy. "Thank you for saying that. I hope you do change and if Effy has faith in you then I'm sure you will." She held out her hand.
Draco shook it. "Thank you for hearing me out."
Hermione nodded. "Effy made a good case." She smiled at her best friend. "Well, I'm going to go to the library, I've got this essay to finish." She waved and left the room.
Effy rushed forward and hugged Draco. "You did great." She exclaimed.
Draco hugged her back, holding on a little longer than a usual hug.
The teens broke apart blushing and Effy cleared her throat. "So, how does it feel?"
"Good." Draco nodded his head. "Oh, and just to let you know I managed to sabotage what the Slytherins were planning but I've only set them back about the week."
"Thanks." Effy smiled at him. "I think this is going to get a lot worse before it gets any better." She leant against one of the desks.
Draco tilted his head seeing the worry behind her eyes. "How are you coping?"
Effy ran her hand through her hair. "Not great." She admitted. "It's taking everything in me not to jinx the bloody lot of them."
"Understandable." Draco nodded.
"But I'll be okay. I'm made of strong stuff." Effy shrugged.
Draco grinned. "Yeah, the strongest." He agreed. "But if you ever... Need someone to talk to or just need cheering up."
Effy smiled. "Thank you. Who would have thought at the beginning of this year we would be friend, eh?" She asked him.
"Not me that's for sure." Draco nudged her. "But I'm really glad we are." He took her hand in his.
"Me too." Effy held his hand and gave it an affectionate squeeze.
And that's chapter five. I hope you enjoyed it. Chapter six coming soon :D
