Don't own Harry Potter, if I did I'd probably drop out. Enjoy!
Sabine's POV
I strapped on my old combat boots and pulled on my coat, taking a deep breath. Was this really my life? Living with an escaped convict sorry, falsely accused escaped convict and his... well there wasn't really a word to describe whatever the fuck Lupin was to him. And of course, their... again, there wasn't really a word for Harry.
Speaking of Harry the little boy had run up with theny a few minutes ago, overjoyed by the idea of going out for shopping.
It made my heart ache as I continued to watch the three of them. Clearly, Sirius and Lupin had rescued him from somewheres awful. I didn't really know.
So many secrets! Thought, I couldn't really blame them. We have secrets of our own. Still, I liked them. Especially little Harry, who reminded me desperately of ...
Well, that was a thought for another time. Right on que, the two little rascals came pelting down the stairs. It amazed me how forgetful kids were, one minute they would be screaming in fear and the next they would be giggling.
Both were dressed in muggle clothes (Athena had probably told him to), theny adamantly wearing pants. It was her way of giving the world the finger, and I honestly loved that about her. Even at seven, she didn't take anything for anyone.
"Are you sure this is a good idea? One of us can come with you." Ah, that was Lupin.
I turned to him, annoyance written all over. "Lupin, stop, it will be fine."
"But it could be dangerous for you to go alone." Sirius pointed out.
I sized up both man. An escaped convict sure to get us caught, who had no wand and not enough muscle to fight a dragonfly, check. A sickly, bookish, chocolate enthusiast who dressed like a professor and built like a bean shoot, check.
"I think I'll pass." I responded, smiling a bit at the wounded puppy dog look on Sirius's face. Lupin sighed through his nose and relented, handing me a list.
On it detailed a very long (and expensive) selection of items.
Clothes for Harry (at least 3 sets)
Pain potions
Healing potions
Wolfsbane
Newt eyes (two pints!)
Milk
Crayons
Sugar quills
Hot chocolate ingredients
Other food (you know better then we do)
Peanut butter
I grimaced as I reached the end. "And how exactly am I to pay for all of this? It's not like we have piles of money lying around!" I asked irritability.
"Well, where do you get the money for shopping?" Sirius asked.
I felt warmth color my cheeks and gritted my teeth. I had nothing to be ashamed of, and it was their fault anyway.
"I may have, while I was cleaning, found jewelry here and there. And since no one had come looking for it in, ya know, years. I just, started...selling it?"
To my surprise, Sirius wasn't angry. On the contrary, he laughed. I always liked his laugh, deep and honest and infectious, like he hadn't laughed in a very long time. That was another thing I'd noticed, the Sirius I lived with, was not the man he'd always been. I could see it now and then, Lupin would say something, like a inside joke, and Sirius's face would go blank.
It hurt the sandy-haired man, but he never said anything.
"That's- oh Merlin my mother is rolling in the grave for that one! That is truly, the best thing I've heard all day." Sirius said, laughing so hard he had to wipe tears from his eyes.
I obviously was startled and was about to ask when Lupin shot me a look. It said stop it! Don't you dare!
Geez, protective much? Ya, these two definitely need to shag, the sooner the better. I shot Lupin a smug grin that widened at his rapidly pinking cheeks.
"*cough* So, why won't that work?" Lupin chocked, shooting a flustered look back at me.
"It'll look suspicious, they'll start asking questions."
"They?" Sirius asked, looking up from helping Harry put his shoes on.
"Guy named Borgin, got a shop up Knockturn Alley." I replied. Lupin looked up sharply and began to tut in disapproval, but I cut him off.
"And yes Lupin, I know what kind of things he sells and what kind of people he sells them too. I've been on my own a long time."
Both men looked uncomfortable and I sighed, knelling down to help Athena with her own shoes.
Finally, Sirius sighed and dig into his pocket for a draw string leather bag. He tossed it to me, the sound of clinking gold drawing my attention.
"It's got a charm on it that connects it to the black vault. Take as much as you need" the black haired man explained, a sort of weathered nostalgia in his smile.
After a moment's hesitation, my grip tightened on the bag and I slid it into my purse. It was one of my most prized possessions, the death eater that saved me gave it to me. A tribute to his sacrifice.
I shook myself and smiled, nodding my thanks to both man.
"Ready to go?" I asked the little ones, watching them shriek with delight and jump up and down.
We made our way outside, just shy of the magical boarders, Lupin just behind.
"How are you going to get there?" He asked nervously, ringing his hands.
I sighed and put a steady hand on his shoulder. "Lupin, we will be fine. Just going to Apparate over to the leaky cauldron and then walk to the muggle grocery when we're done, 'Kay?"
He shook himself and nodded, both he and Sirius kneeling down to Harry's level.
"You be good for Sabine, okay? Make sure to stay close-"
"And have fun!"
"And have fun, but be safe too."
Harry nodded and smiled, giving both of them tight hugs. I turned away, letting them have their moments as I pulled Athena to my side. She hugged back, and Harry soon joined us, slightly pink from all the hugging.
"Excited?!" I asked Harry, the little boy's face lighting up.
"Yep! Let's go! Let's go!" He chanted happily and I laughed.
"Okay, okay. Take my hand, and remember to hold on real tight, don't want you flying off!"
Athena and Harry both screwed their faces up in concentration and held my hand tight.
"Alright, we're off! I shouted, stepping over the boarder and spinning on my heel, disappearing with a pop.
We appear right in front of the Leaky Cauldron. We stumbled a bit, but both kiddos were to excited to care.
"Come on Harry, let's go!" Athena shouted excitedly, dragging her friend forward. I chuckled and followed them in.
The bar looked relatively the same, Tom serving pea soup to another unsuspecting customer. The old man smiled at me and I grinned back, saluting him as we made our way back.
Harry now looked very confused and I picked him up to show him.
"Athena, since it's Harry's first time coming to Diagon Alley, would you like to stay with us instead of running off on your own?"
Theny considered this for a minute, then nodded yes. Smiling, I carefully tapped out the bricks with my finger. The wall started to shake and Harry hid his face in my jumper.
Once the entrance was completely open, I nudged the little boy. He looked up, filling with wonder as he took it all in.
Taking Athena's had, we entered the bustle.
I was having trouble keeping both little rascals with me. I'd put Harry down at one point and had instantly regretted it.
Athena wanted to explore all of the shops, trying to run ahead and touch everything in sight. Harry had the exact opposite problem. He was amazed and probably in shock by everything and would stop dead in his tracks to stare at something.
Finally, (mostly to get them out of the way of some VERY petty shoppers) I wrangled both of them into the Quidditch shop.
The bell chimed as we walked inside, Athena and Harry eminently running off to look around. I slumped against the wall breathing deeply. Children were hard!
"Little once driving you up the wall dear?" Asked a kind voice to my right. I turned to see a red-haired women with wide hips and deep smile lines giving me a sympathetic look.
"You have no idea." I replied airily, sliding forward f the wall to face her.
"I'm here with all of my boys, there just over there. All the red-heads you see are mine."
Taking a look around, I marveled at all of them. The eldest, a laid back guy about my age,was over by the brooms display. Talking to him was what I assumed was his little brother, a slightly stocker built 15 year old who seemed way more excited about quidditch then his ponytailed sibling.
A little ways away, a thin bespectacled kid of about 12 sat with his nose stuck in a hogwarts textbook, occasionally looking up to scold his younger siblings.
The twin boys (who to me looked like instant trouble makers) were trying to see how many Quaffles they could balance on their heads. Both boys wore identical mischievous grins as the bookish one scolded them.
And finally, standing over by the quaffle display case, sat the youngest boy. He looked much like his brothers (red hair, blue eyes, lanky, ect.), and looked about Harry's age. He also looked very sad to be standing alone.
My heart softened a bit for him, it couldn't be easy being the youngest of all those brothers. Looking around, I saw Harry staring at the boy to, a sort of sad recognition on his face.
We met eyes, and I nodded my approval. Smiling, he dragged a bored looking Athena over to the little boy.
Turning back to the women, I recognize her fond look.
"Is those two yours, deary? Why, you don't look any older then Bill!"
I blushed slightly (bill must be the eldest?) and shook my head. "Uh-no ma'am, the little girl is my sister and Harry's our... family friend."
The women smiled and waved her hands. "No need for that ma'am nonsense, it's just Molly, Molly Weasley dear." The women-Molly hummed, patting my arm. I felt very- mothered, ya, that was the word.
"Well, it's very nice to met you Molly, I'm Sabine by the way. Um..." I could think of anything to say that wouldn't be, well, rude.
She chuckled at my (probably) lost expression and patted my arm again. "It's alright dear, I know my family is quite a lot to take in."
I blushed even harder. "N-no, that's not what I meant! I just-"
"Dear-" she soothed, "No need to tie yourself into knots. Now, what about you, are you here all by yourself? We can walk with you if you need an extra pair of eyes watching the little ones."
What a sweet lady, I thought, she was so nice. "Oh no-well, would you mind? That actually be wonderful." I almost sagged in relief.
"Of course dear! Let me just round them up! You can met everyone, there all really the sweetest." She called over her shoulder, going to collect them.
I walked over to my own kiddos, pleased to see that little Harry had made a friend. Athena on the other hand looked bored to tears and had been slowly planing to sneak away for a while.
"Hey guys, how would you like to walk with miss Molly and her family?" I asked, much to Harry's thrill.
"Can we? This is my new friend Ron! He likes quidditch, his brother Charlie even has his own broom!"The little boy rambled, pulling Ron forward.
Ron seemed shy and looked up at me in wonder. Like my old jumper and skinny jeans made me some sort of god. I smiled down at him and shook his hand, making him blush scarlet.
"Oh! Dear, do you mind if we stop at the muggle shop on the corner, my husbands and daughter are there?" Molly called, trying to pull the twins apart.
Athena perked up at that, walking briskly out with Harry and Ron. I followed closely, falling into step next to the eldest brother.
"Your bill, right?" I asked, trying to balance my shopping bags precariously as we walked.
He laughed and nodded. "And I'm sure my mum told you all about me, right?"
I smiled, and we fell into easy conversation, talking about our siblings and what not. It was fun.
We were turning the corner now, stopping right next to the muggle second hand shop. I always found this place funny, wizards trying to guess what things did.
I picked out mr. Weasley almost eminently, his slightly balding red hair a dead giveaway. He was holding a 6 year old girl on his hip, laughing as she pointed at different muggle contraptions.
"Arthur! Arthur! Come see, it seems we've made some new friends." Molly called over to the man, who looked up with a smile.
Lightning fast, Athena had dashed past me to the little girl in Arthur's arms. They started talking animatedly, both little girls excited to finally play princess.
I walked up to both parents, shaking mr Weasley's hand. "Nice to met you sir!" I greeted kindly. They both seemed very kind, the kind of people Remus would want Harry around. Speaking of Remus-
"Oh sh-schnitzel! I have to go to the muggle grocery for food and, we've got to get back soon!" I gasped, pulling away to check my watch.
Crap, Lupin was gonna kill me!
"Oh well, that's just to bad. But maybe we could arrange a play date for the boys? Ginny and your sister also look like they're having a good time." Molly said, gesturing to the gaggle of children.
"Yes yes, of course, let me just-" I said distractedly, trying to continue to balance the shopping while beckoning the kids over.
"Here dear, let bill help you. And write if you ever need." Molly soothed, pressing a bit of parchment into my hand as bill took one of my bags.
"No, really, it's okay-" I argued, trying weakly to wave bill off.
"Come on, at least let me cast a extension charm on your bag." Mr. Weasley said, raising his wand and casting a complicated-looking spell on my largest shopping bag.
I stared at it, then back up at Mr. Weasley with a smile. "Thank you, your a life saver!" I said, helping pack all of the other bags into the charmed one. Stuffing the parchment into my pocket, I held my hands out to Athena and Harry as they came trotting up to me.
"Do we have to?" Harry wined, looking back longingly to his new friend. Athena hung on my arm dejectedly.
I sighed through my nose. "Yes, but we can always write to Ron, maybe have a play date sometime?" I asked hopefully, breathing a sigh of relief when they both agreed.
"Alright, we'll be off. Thank you so much for everything!" I called as we rushed away and out into muggle London.
I had so much fun writing this chapter. Hoping y'all are happy and healthy, please comment and review whatever you fancy.
(If you can't tell, I'm really feeling my fake British accent right now)
