Happy ungrateful colonist day! (4th of July) hope you love this chapter, I've been waiting for this one!
Sirius's POV
"What?!"
I stared at Sabine, her words slowly registering.
I know what happened to Regulus Black
Regulus Black-Reggie-my baby brother. What had happen to him?
I'd just assumed that he'd when into hiding like the rest of the death eaters. But...
Wouldn't he have come here?
The wards around the outside alone were century old and most of them outlawed long ago. It was the perfect place to hide, at least I thought so.
So where the fuck was he?
"I can explain." I jumped a little, forgetting that Sabine was there.
I nodded, not really sure what to say.
Sabine looked nervous as she opened a small thin box I hadn't noticed before. Taking the top of and brushing back the folding paper, I heard Remus inhaled sharply.
Inside was a broken wand.
To a witch/wizard, your wand is an extension of yourself. To break your wand is as debilitating as losing an arm or a leg.
This was why Sabine never did magic, she couldn't.
"When...my family was attacked, to death eaters were the ones to do it. One of them I don't know, the other...was Regulus."
"Regulus was the one who took you?" Remus asked sternly, hand entwining with mine. Thank god he was here.
"I'm lucky he did, because Reggie was also the one to bust me out."
"Why?" Remus asked.
Sabine placed both hands on the table, like she was bracing herself for something painful. Then she began to talk.
"They had just apparated us to this huge mansion, it was their base of sorts. Belonged to this rich blond guy."
"Malfoy's?"
"Dunno. Anyways, the death eaters dragged us into their basement and one of them, the guy I dont know, went to go do something. Leaving me with Reggie."
"He looked over at me, by then a was crying buckets. I was scared out of my mind, sure they were going to kill me 'n theny any minute."
"He must have pitied me, because he kneeled down next to me and took of his mask."
She paused, shaking herself a little before going on.
"He looked so human, nothing like the muggle-hunting monsters I'd heard about. He offered me a hand and I took it, that's when it happened."
"A vision hit me, and because he was holding my hand, he saw it. It showed us a cave with a basin, and in that basin a locket. That locket was the key to killing Voldemort."
"Wait, wait, wait! But Voldemort is already dead, Harry killed him." I interrupted, holding my hands up.
She looked at me sadly and my stomach dropped. There was no fucking way-
"He is...it's hard to explain. How Reggie explained it to me was...well let's just say your brother isn't the best at explaining things, especially to a child." She replied, a hint of a smile ghosting her lips.
I wanted to smack her. What did this have to do with Regulus?! How dare she smile, however this ended, it couldn't be good. Something definitely happened, what had she done?!
Before I could act on that impulse, Remus asked her to go on.
"When the vision ended, I didn't know what it meant, I'd never seen anything like that. But Regulus understood, or at least guessed it was important."
"He stood, walked over to the doorway and peering down the hall, checking to make sure the coast is clear. Then he summons Kreacher-"
"Hold on-" I interrupted her again. "You mean to tell me that scum ball had something to do with this?!" I shrieked.
I'd always hated that elf, something Reggie didn't share. Kreacher had always liked him best after all.
Remus scolded me for interrupting again as Sabine started again.
"So he summons Kreacher, told him something in Latin, it all happened so fast." She said, blinking a bit in confusion.
"Before I knew it, Regulus hauled me to my feet, shoved me at the elf and snapped my wand. I can't even begin to explain what it felt like. It was awful."
That I could understand. They'd snapped my wand when I went to Azkaban. I wasn't given a trial, they just chained me to the chair and read me my sentence.
I sat there, eyes glassy, unable to form words as they read it out.
A couple days of nonstop hunting for Peter and another few days in Azkaban's holding cells did that to a guy
"The defendant, Sirius Orion Black, heir of the most noble and esteemed house of black, is her by sentenced to life in Azkaban. No probation!"
The room erupted in jeering and cheers as guards wrenched me out of my chains and began to match me away.
That's when it truly hit me. They were dead, James and Lily, sweet MERLIN. Peter had killed them, not me.
no. No No NO!
I started screaming, what I was screaming I don't know, but I couldn't stop.
I started struggling, when something else hit me. Where. Was. Remus.
I whipped around, looking for him, he wasn't here. He'd left me.
My last friend, my lover, the best thing that had ever happened to me. He was gone. I let out a broken a wail and slumped.
I didn't see it happen, I felt it.
When your wand breaks, you don't feel it (James had spilt his in third year during a prank. But when someone snaps your wand, ON PURPOSE...
It jolted through me, like a tidal wave of muggle electricity.
And with that, it was over. They dragged me away limply.
The full moon was the night of my trial, I learned later. Remus had told me that that night in particular, Moony had been vicious.
Still...
Sabine started up again, and I pulled myself out of my own head to listen.
"There was this bright light and a boom as we disapparated, he must have stunned himself and-"
"How do we know your not lying? Or a death eater spy? Or an auror coming to take Harry back?!" Remus asked, his voice right and stern.
It was the same voice he'd used to threaten this same girl the first time we met.
The seer looked up at us tiredly, then nodded and reached out her hands. She was going to show us a vision, I realize.
"I would never hurt that kid, his an angel. Let me prove it."
Watching a vision was a bit like using a pensive. Only, the connection started from our hands.
You felt it coming too, which I didn't expect. It washed over you like a warm bath, rushing up to obscure your sight.
When I opened my eyes again, we were indeed standing in malfoy manner. Tall, obsidian walls, black accents, and crystal all around.
I'd only been here once, it 6th year right before I left to live with James. Malfoy senior had thrown a Christmas party and his parents had forced him to attend. If I recalled correctly, Lucius proposed to cousin Narcissa at the end of the night.
This must be the living room, long black fainting couches position around a dark coffee table. And there-sitting on the ground between to masked death eaters, that must be Sabine.
She was smaller then I expected, her face had a mousy look about it as she clutched baby Athena to he chest.
She reminded me a lot of Harry, come to think of it. My heart sagged a little at the thought.
One of the death eaters, the taller of the two, muttered something to his companion and left the room, just like Sabine said.
Not able to help myself, I leaned forward as the remaining death eater took his mask of.
Reggie looked older, well trimmed black hair framed his face well. He'd lost most of his baby fat too, (a side effect of working with moldy voldy probably) his cheek bones jutting out proudly.
He looked...changed.
Gone was my baby brother, the kid that hid under my bed when he was afraid of our mothers wrath. Who cried on the platform when I left for first year.
Now, looking at him, I couldn't help the tears that sprung in my eyes.
I'd never understand Lily's need to try with her sister. From all the bad things I heard about her (and from James, there had been quite a few), she seemed like a loss cause.
But lily hadn't given up, of course she hadn't. She was Lily Potter née Evens, giving up wasn't in her vocabulary.
(I'd always said she'd be the one to kill Voldemort)
But now, I finally understand why she fought so hard. I'd let Regulus slip away, the Reggie I knew was gone.
He had knelt down by now, offering a hand Sabine.
I watched the vision pass between them, watched Reggie yanking Sabine to her feet, and heard him call for Kreacher.
I shuddered as he snapped her wand, his face one I would never forget. It was cold, eyes focused and distracted all at once.
A jerk near my hand made my eyes pull away from the scene as I began to spin. Like a portkey, the seer pulled me back from the rapidly disappearing scene.
Remus's POV
I was flung back a bit in my chair as the vision ended, trying to get a hold of my breath.
Okay, a new found respect for all the shit Sabine goes through was in order. I didn't think I could do THAT ever again.
She wasn't lying.
Okay, good. But what did that mean for Regulus?
Personally, I'd never really met him. Only occasionally passing him in the corridors of hogwarts. Most of what I knew about him came from Sirius.
Still, based on the look on Sabine's face, I couldn't help the wallow of dread building in my stomach for him. Whatever happened, it couldn't have been good.
I snaked my fingers through one of Sirius's shaking hands, squeezing comfortingly.
He looked numb, I knew he wasn't up for talking, so I addressed Sabine.
"So what happened after that?"
" Kreacher apparated back here, locked me in his room for hours. I was terrified."
I couldn't help but grimaced at this. Before hogwarts, all of my transformations were held in our locked basement, chains locked over my limps and alone.
"When he finally did come, he sat me down at this table to talk to me."
"He told me everything, about how he had been searching for a way to kill Voldemort. How he wanted to atone for his crimes. He asked me for my help, promised to keep me safe."
I looked back over at Sirius, watching for telltale signs of panic on his face.
After years of living with his parents, auror training, war, and finally dementors, Padfoot had become a master at hiding his emotions. He was still wreak less, which made it even more dangerous. You couldn't see it coming unless you knew what to look for.
So far, I spotted nothing, Sabine went on.
"I stayed here for a year and worked with Reggie, trying to figure out what the locket was and why it was So important. He was obsessed!"
I bet he was I thought, from the sound of it, this locket was a powerful dark magic item. They tended to do that to a person.
"He eventually figured out what it was, but he wouldn't tell me! I've spent years trying combing you library, nothing. He must have taken his research with him when he left."
"You keep saying when he left, where did he go?" Sirius asked sternly. Clearly, he was getting impatient, I squeezed his hand.
"Around the summer of '79, Voldemort asked for a house elf, Reggie volunteered Kreacher. I-I don't know exactly what he did to him, but Merlin. It was horrible!"
"He told Reggie what happened and Reggie understand eminently. This place must be where the locket was hidden."
"He took both of us there about a week after, had to do all these weird things to get in. Reggie had to give blood to a wall and shit like that. Anyways, we arrived at this cave on a little boat, it would only take to but I guess Kreacher didn't count."
"W-we made it to this island, and there was this basin. There it was, the locket! Just sitting there! I-I went to pick it up, but he stopped me. Told me that Kreacher said there was no point."
"You have to drink he told me. He m-made me promise. Whatever happens, Whatever I say or do or tell you, you must make me keep drinking. And when the basin is empty, Kreacher will swap the lockets and you must leave me, promise?!"
Sabine's shoulders slumped, she looked defeated. Tears had sprung in her eyes and were falling down her face, she didn't wipe them away.
"S-so I d-did *sniff* . And he started wailing and moaning, telling us to stop, calling out to people who weren't there."
I knew that "weren't there" mention Sirius, I put an arm around him as she blubbered.
"A-and when it was e-empty, he switched the lockets and then-...a-and t-than!"
She burst into uncontrollably sobs, something that startled both Sirius and I heavily. I'd never seen he this upset, ever. It was heartbreaking.
Sirius began to shake so I pulled him to me. He didn't cry, but he shook like a leaf as Sabine got ahold of herself.
"He was crawling to the edge for a drink but- they attacked- there were to many, a whole army of them-the Inferi-"
"He made me leave him. I begged Kreacher to let us take him, to let me take him back! But he wouldn't let me! "
My blood when cold.
I'd heard of Inferi, reanimated corpses that couldn't be killed and were powered by dark magic. But a whole army...
Regulus had never stood a chance.
I felt Sirius start to cry, terrible heaving sobs into my jacket. I hugged him tighter.
I looked a Sabine. She looked both older and younger in that moment, a lifetimes supple of pressure on her shoulders.
Suddenly, Sirius leapt from his chair, eyes blazing.
"Where is he?!" He yelled, whipping around. Sabine sank into her chair in fear.
I stood as well.
"Where-"
"Who love?"
"KREACHER!"
Sirius bellowed, one filled with pure, unbridled rage.
A loud crack sounded, and to my (and Sabine's) astonishment, there he stood.
He wasn't a nice looking house elf, though to be far I'd only seen the ones at hogwarts and at the Potter manner.
He was gnarly, old, with an unmistakable cruelness in his beady little eyes.
I could understand why Sirius didn't like him, and that was before he opened his mouth.
"Master Sirius had called on Kreacher. Still associating with halfbreed scam and mudblood filth. Oh what the mistress would say if she saw-"
"ENOUGH!" Sirius yelled. I looked at the door. I didn't know what Harry and Athena were doing, but they certainly didn't need to be here.
I mentally willed Sirius to keep his voice down.
"You horrible, pathetic, piece of everloving shit-" he roared, stalking towards the little elf.
I followed him, prepared to restrain him if need be.
The sound of running feet sounded above us and the duo burst into the room.
Sirius eminently stepped back, but the damage was done. Harry's eyes went wide in horror.
But before he could say anything, before anyone could act. Athena screamed.
"It's the munchkin!"
Holy fuck y'all, I have been waiting SO.FUCKING.LONG. To write this chapter!
Hope this helps with any (many) of the plot holes y'all have seen.
Love y'all, bye!
