"May? Honey?" Leilani tried to get her friend's attention as said friend sat down heavily in the passenger seat of her car.

"What?" May responded, blinking heavily.

Leilani turned in her seat to fully face her friend. "You need a distraction."

May's brow furrowed. "No, I…"

"Yes, you do," Leilani interrupted, not giving the other woman an opportunity to argue. "May I have seen you run yourself ragged for that boy's sake since the day you and Ben took him in. No one can argue with how much you care. But you need to take care of yourself too."

"Lei, I need to take care of him."

"I know, honey, but no one, not even you, can pour from an empty cup. So we're going to have a night off. Just you and me, like the old days."

May sighed and buried her face in her hands. "Thank you Lei," she said when she looked up, a single teardrop on her cheek.

"Now none of that," Leilani chided, brushing the tear away from her sister's face. "Let's get out of here," she said as she pressed play on the stereo and started the car. Music from their college days blasted from the speakers as they drove to the Thai place that May liked so much.

Peter was dazed. MJ could tell that he wasn't really hearing what she was telling him about the end of the movie, but she kept telling him anyway.

"…and then after the battle…" MJ finished telling Peter the end of the movie as the ambulance pulled into the medbay entrance of the Compound.

MJ still wasn't sure why Peter was getting treated at the Avengers' Compound by the Avengers (Ned had told her some BS about Peter having allergies to medicines and him having access because of the Stark internship, but MJ wasn't sure that was it, or at least not all of it), but she trusted them to help her friend get better.

.

Dr. Banner kept examining Peter as he lifted Peter's shirt.

"There it is," the doctor said, his brows pinched together with concern, "his port's infected."

"Is he going to be okay?" Ned asked timidly from the front of the ambulance.

"Hmm? Of course he is," Dr. Banner responded curtly, "let's get him inside."

Dinner was filled with good fun. It had been forever since they had last simply spent time together without their boys.

So they laughed and chatted about the good old days of college, repeated inside jokes a few too many times and even stayed longer than expected and got dessert.

It was a lovely night out, the perfect evening, until May brought out her phone at the end of dessert to check the time. There were six missed calls. She had forgotten to turn her phone off of vibrate when she had gotten home from work that day. Most were from Ned, but the last two were from Tony Stark.

She was about to call him back when her phone vibrated in her hand as he called her again.

Leilani looked at her with questions in her eyes as she answered.

"Stark? Is everything okay?" May asked, biting her lip, her stomach beginning to churn from nerves again.

"May! Thank goodness!"

"How's Peter?" she asked as Leilani subtly asked the waiter for the check.

Tony's voice paused. "He has a fever. Bruce and I brought him into the compound via ambulance a few minutes ago. His port's infected. Bruce is going to try antibiotics, but the last resort option is to remove it."

"Okay," May nodded, trying to keep a level head. "Does he need anything from home?"

"No," Tony quickly answered, "I had his friends grab his hospital bag. He should be all set. He just needs you."

May took a deep breath, nodding. "Okay. Okay, I'm on my way. Thank you of taking care of him, Tony."

"Where are we going?" Leilani asked as soon as May hung up.

"The Avenger's compound," May answered, wetting her suddenly dry lips with her tongue. "Peter has a fever from an infected port and that's where his primary doctor is."

"Okay, just give me the address and we'll be on our way," Leilani answered as they made their way back to the car.

May sat down in the passenger's seat hard again, her lower lip trembling. She looked up when she felt her friend's hand on her shoulder.

Leilani looked her dead in the eye and said firmly, "He's going to be okay."

May sniffled as she tried to hold back her tears again. "I can't lose him Lei," she whispered.

"I know," she answered, bringing her friend into a hug. "One step at a time, alright?" Leilani said as she pulled back.

May nodded resolutely.

"We're going to get to him tonight while they get some antibiotics in him. And you're going to cry if you need to."

May gave a wet laugh at her friend's bluntness. "You have the best way of saying things."

"That's why you keep me around," Leilani winked as she started the car and started towards the Avenger's compound.

A/N: A bit of a shorter chapter to end my break. Sorry I kind of left you guys on a cliff hanger!

The mission trip internship was amazing! Thank you all for your prayers, support, and understanding. I'm coming out of it with a more solid idea of what I want to do after college, more self confidence, more experience in my field, and several lifelong friends!
