Heart Strings
"Shego, did you know a person can actually die of a broken heart?"
"Come again?"
"Yes. After a deep emotional trauma, the tendons in a person's heart, nicknamed 'heart strings,' can in fact snap and cause the heart to lose its shape and no longer pump blood effectively."
Shego lowered her magazine, replaying and absorbing Drakken's words as she turned in her chair to look at him. He was simply standing and gazing back at her from about twenty feet away in the lab, his face expressionless.
He turned a moment later and resumed working with something on the lab table, as if the brief dialogue hadn't even occurred. Shego felt a strange twinge in her chest as her mind did battle between wanting to hide behind attempting to discern his motives, contemplating the weight of the very real truth he had just revealed, and wondering why he had brought it up at all.
The magazine was set down as she zeroed in on a new thought: just what would break the heart of a scarred mad scientist bent on world domination? She was surprised a moment later to find that her feet had brought her to his side as she silently pondered that strangely uneasy thought.
Drakken startled slightly upon finding her at his side, but said nothing, simply raising a brow in her direction.
"What...was it you were working on again, Doc?" Shego asked.
"Oh. Not much really... There was that sentient plants thing, but it probably won't work."
His eyes had drifted back to a confused mix of papers and blueprints on the table, and something about his neutral expression bothered her. She felt the twinge in her chest again and stepped nearer to him, leaning against the table.
"Tell me about it one more time," she said. "Maybe I can help."
Drakken's expression brightened into something more familiar, and Shego felt a tightness in her chest begin to release. And as he began explaining the beginnings of the plan, she realized with a wave of confusion just what tugged sharply at her own heart strings.
