Star learns a new skill to stave off boredom. Spoilers for book 1.
"Bored," fifteen-year-old Star whined, as she lay on her bed in her room in Butterfly Castle. Marco was out learning how to be a squire and eventually a knight ... or, more likely, battling with Squire Higgs, again. She thought about calling Tom, but she didn't really feel like fending off her boyfriend's attempts to cuddle rather than have an adventure.
Star rolled over onto her side. "Bored, bored." She rolled over onto her other side. "Bored, bored, bored."
Star sighed. She thought, Today might be the day I face my biggest fear: boredom. This time there's no strangely shaped maker of frozen treats to provide a girl with an adventure. Maybe today is the day I renounce my vow to never have a dull day!
Star flipped onto her stomach, her face in her pillow. Her voice muffled, she said, "Bored, bored, bored, bored, bored, bored, BORED!" I guess today I will look boredom in its eyes, those beady little black eyes, like tiny little black fists; I'll look into those eyes and I will say ... air! Gimme air! Star flipped her face out of the pillow and herself off the bed, desperately sucking air into her lungs after nearly suffocating herself.
The tunnel vision and spots before Star's eyes reminded her of crystals she'd seen somewhere. It took her a few seconds, but she finally remembered where. She thought, As me as my witness, I'll never go bored again! And anything else I'm supposed to think to make this official! Again!
Star stood, then yelled at the top of her lungs, "Hey space-time guy!" Star sat on her bed, kicking her legs, a look of expectant giddiness on her face. After a few tens of seconds, the skeleton head of Omnitraxus Prime poked out of a portal in front of Star.
Omnitraxus' voice boomed, echoing off the walls as he said, "What do you want, you annoying little sh... I mean, what can I do for you, princess?"
"I'm bored," Star answered. "Take me to 'The Crystalline Felines of Intertwining Continents!'"
"Do you mean, 'The Crystal Fields of Interwoven Continuum?'"
"Ummmmm ... I don't think that's right, but whatever. Take me there."
Star followed Omnitraxus' head as he pulled it back into the portal, stepping onto the Fields. Star stood in awe of the hundreds ... thousands ... millions of crystals, each showing a different Star Butterfly in an alternate timeline.
"Can I actually visit them, rather than just watch?"
"It's kind of dangerous; if you..."
"Bored."
Omnitraxus sighed. "Okay, whatever, if it will make you leave me alone. How about this one?" Omnitraxus used his power to pull over a crystal to Star. "In this universe, you and Marco go on a two-week vacation, where the two of you first make ..."
"Meh," Star pouted.
Omnitraxus pulled over another. "In this universe, Mewni and you and everybody you know exist only in a cartoon. A fandom grew up around it, and there's even an online community for the show on the 'Read It!' website. They go so far as to have monthly contests writing fan-fiction stories, even though the show ended years ago. And it's not just kids and young adults that write the stories, but also adults that are decades old."
"Wow. That's so sad. Don't they have girlfriends? Or boyfriends? Or girl boyfriends? Or boy girlfriends? Or..."
"Okay, stop, I get it, you're inclusive. No, they don't; surprisingly, 'I'm a magical princess ... or prince ... from another dimension' is usually not a successful pickup line. Anyway, would you like to go to that alternate universe?"
"No, if a real Star Butterfly showed up that differed from expectations, it'd probably spark a war in the fandom."
"What about this one, where Marco and Hekapoo had a..."
"Bored."
"Well, what about..."
"Bored."
"In this one..."
"Booooorrrrreeeeeddddd!"
"I can't believe this is happening ... again," Omnitraxus muttered. "Look, what if I teach you how to travel to alternate universes on your own? Then will you leave me alone?"
"Yes! Until next time."
Omnitraxus briefly considered leaving Star on the Fields to starve to death, but decided that probably wouldn't be prudent. "Fine," he said instead, "I'll teach you. Do exactly what I say. Take out the wond. Good. Now, hop five times on your right foot."
Star hopped.
"Five times on your left foot."
Star hopped.
"Now jump up and down, tickling your armpits like a monkey-icorn, and make monkey-icorn sounds, for ten seconds."
Star made like a blonde monkey-icorn for ten seconds.
"Now lick your elbow ... wow! I didn't think it was possible to do that. That special someone who's waiting in your future is in for some interesting times."
Star looked at Omnitraxus in confusion. "Why would Tom be interested in that?"
"Right ... Tom ... sure, whatever. Next, sit on the ground and scoot in a small circle."
Star scooted.
"Stand up, and cast, 'Eye ma stoop head doof uhs.'"
Star repeated the incantation.
"Now, think of the delicate strands of space-time; the infinite possibilities from infinite possible decisions, interwoven in a cosmic continuum. Pick a strand and channel your magic through it."
Star closed her eyes, raised the wond, and mumbled, "Interbloven comic condididum."
Sparks appeared in front of Star, but no portal opened. "It didn't work," Star whined.
"It would have, had you done the full incantation continuously, rather than in steps so you could learn it. When you try it on your own, I'm certain you'll have no problem. For today, I'll open one for you, to a random universe." A space-time portal opened in front of Star.
"How will I get back to my own universe?"
"When you open a portal to go home, just concentrate on the strand that ties you to your own universe, and the portal you open will take you there. For today, just call for that universe's Omnitraxus and he'll be more than happy to get rid of ... I mean, help you on your way home."
"And I have to do that stupid incantation dance and cast that spell every time?"
"Welllll, okay, actually, no. You only have to think of the strands of space-time and so forth. I made you do the rest because I thought it'd be funny. Now off you pop, I have to go fight an Italian stallion. Omnitraxus Prime has spoken!" Omnitraxus gently pushed Star into the portal.
Star stepped out of the portal onto a street in Castle Village. Star looked at her surroundings, wondering if Omnitraxus had completely fooled her as nothing looked different.
Finally, Star decided to visit the castle. As she rounded a corner near the main gate in the battlement wall, she came face to uni-horn with Princess Ponyhead. This Ponyhead looked exactly like what Star imagined her Ponyhead would look like after growing up.
"Whoa, gurl, watch where you're going. Hey ... you look awfully familiar. Have we met?"
"Um, I don't think so, I'm new in town ... and I have partial amnesia. What I do remember is that I'm a big fan of Princess Butterfly; I even try to look and dress like her. Can you tell me what's been going on with her?"
"Hmmmmm, you do kinda look like my bestie when she was a teenager, in an ugly sort of way. Well, put on your listening ears and drink it all in!
Years ago, Star settled down with that hottie Tom. And I mean hottie in the literal sense, he's a demon, you know. I thought they were kidding me when I first saw them holding hands and junk for a second time around, but it somehow worked this time.
Then when that crazy chick Eclipsa showed up we thought Star was going to have to fight her for the throne, but all Eclipsa wanted was to be with her husband and her daughter. Oh! That Heinous woman turned out to be Eclipsa's daughter, can you believe it?"
Star rubbed her arm. "Sounds far-fetched."
"So anyway, Tom proposed to Star and she accepted! They had a fabulous wedding, and I was stunning as Maid of Honor. My sisters were sooooo jealous!" Pony's expression became a bit melancholy. "I can't believe it's already been eight years."
To Star's surprise, hearing about that universe's Star's and Tom's nuptials felt ... wrong, somehow. Burying the feeling, she said, "Thanks for bringing me up to speed, I think I'll go visit them." Star stepped toward the gate.
Pony flew in front of Star, blocking her path. "Whoa there, gurl ... Star's in the maternity ward recovering from squeezing out the next Crown Princess. Only family and besties allowed. I'm out here only to let my ears recover from all the screaming, and I wasn't even in the delivery room with Star and Tom; I never knew Tom had such a loud, girlie, scream. The doctor told us they both passed out just as the baby slipped out; I'll be going back in when they wake up, to be there when they see my gorgeous niece for the first time."
"Oh, er, thank you, for your time. I'll be going." Star turned away, her mind trying to make sense of why Star and Tom having a baby also felt wrong. She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she was completely oblivious to the fact she had accidently bumped Ponyhead as she turned, knocking Pony into a running woodchipper.
Star decided she wanted to see the baby. She found a blind alley, where she cast Eclipsa's All-Seeing Eye. In the spell's viewport she saw an exhausted Star lying in bed, surrounded by Marco, Tom, Moon, River, and King Lucitor. Star thought, More than eight years older and still beautiful ... that's Marco for ya.
Through the portal came Tom's voice, saying, "Starship, we can't keep waiting for Pony; it's time we met our daughter." Mama Star sighed, then gestured to somebody out of view. A nurse entered the view, handed a swaddled child to Star, then stepped away. Marco and Tom leaned in.
Smiling lovingly, Star pulled away the cloth obscuring most of the baby's face. The baby girl had blonde hair, blue eyes full of azure fire, Magic-Pips that looked like hands making the sign of the horns, mocha-colored skin, a cute little mole on her right cheek ... and no demon features whatsoever. Wide eyed, Star and Marco looked at each other. In unison, they said,
"Oops."
In the alley, Star conjured a lounge chair, then sat. Leaning back, she pulled a bucket of popcorn out of a dimensional portal. As she watched the drama unfold, the ring of clashing swords, and the sounds of flames, magical explosions, excessively foul language, and attempts at an explanation, blared from the Eye.
Star thought, I gotta take Marco with me when I create a space-time portal for the first time. These visits are going to be so much fun! For once, I'm glad I took the time to learn something new.
Stay amazing!
