Chapter 1: Darling

Jaron's POV

Sitting in a chair in the throne room, not the best afternoon I had, but at least it was over. The war, finally over, though thousands of my men slaughtered. I was thinking about Roden, what he said before I went to Avenia. The question still lingered in my mind, did you love Imogen? The truth that I have waited to feel for so long finally could come out. Imogen walked into the room, her dark hair hung down and onto her shoulders.

"I love you." I said, awaiting her response.

She started to laugh and said, "I love you too."

I had a plan, like I always do, no plan. It involves the garden where Roden attacked me two years ago. Last time I was in the garden was when we were scrubbing off the leftover blood from my guards. Mott wants me to punish Roden for that, but I see Roden's pain and why he did what he did. I still can never forgive him for doing that though, he killed so many innocent. Imogen walked over to me and kissed my cheek.

"Imogen?", I said.

"Yes?", her voice was so soft, so sweet, so her.

"Will you walk with me to the gardens?"

She came back over to me and we started walking. The gardens were as beautiful as ever, probably because people actually took care of them. I glanced over at Imogen, the most perfect being that I ever knew. I bet Darius would have wanted to meet her, so that he could be proud of me for something. Imogen was so graceful, her hair pinned back perfectly. I still knew I didn't deserve her, I never did. She would scold me for saying that though, so I keep those in my journal, in a secret compartment on my bedside table. The last thing I want is for Imogen to find out what I write in there.

Imogen's POV

Hand in hand Jaron and I walked to the gardens. I have no idea why we are going there because usually it's the last place Jaron wants to go. I can see Jaron staring at me, and he knows I notice. Jaron is imperfect, silly and irresponsible, but I can't help but love him. Back at Farthenwood I couldn't, the other servants would beat me until I was bruised all over. I couldn't love him after that either, Amarinda was betrothed to him. Now I can love him though, and that's all that matters to me. I think he wants to ask me something, something important. He walked over to the wall though, vines covering the stone around it. Touching the corner, where the vines were regrowing. I understood why he was here, he was here to look back at painful memories, so he could make a good one.

"You see this? It's where I climbed before Roden attacked." he said, pain in his eyes.

"I see. Jaron, why are we here?" I asked. He took his hands in mine and smiled.

"I wanted to reflect, reflect on my past choices. Maybe even make a new one." He walked back over to the wall. Something was wrong, he never reflects on his past choices. I ran up to him, about to ask him about it when the unimaginable happened.

"Yes!" I said

Jaron's POV

I swung Imogen up in the air. That word was the only one I ever wanted to hear, yes. Tears streaming down her face, mine too. When I set her down on the ground again she kissed me. At that moment I knew she really did love me, and I did too . I loved her more than life itself. Her light blue gown, her dark hair, her smile, her voice, her everything was perfect.

"So, are you happy?" I asked her.

"I love you so much!" she said, tears still running down her face.

"I love you too!" now tears were running down my face.

"I have to go tell Amarinda…"

"Please don't" her smile faded into shock. "I wanted it to be a surprise." I said. She nodded her head showing that she understood. I took her hands and started to dance. Though we weren't dancing properly, it was our time and only our time. I never really got this time with her, people are always fussing over me because I'm king. Which is a major downside. Imogen was smiling again, which was good because I can't stand it when she isn't. I gave her another embrace and kissed her again. I put the ring on her hand. I knew she wouldn't want a big jewel so I gave her a silver ring with vines going around it. It was just like her, simple and beautiful. She stared into my eyes, a worried look came upon her face.

"What's wrong?" I said in panic.

She smiled, "Just trying to see if there was any doubt in you." she chuckled. "There isn't by the way." she exited the room.

I knew it, I knew that I had just been engaged with the best woman in the world. My life, my love, my world, Imogen.
