There was nothing quite as unpleasant to Kaeya as losing more than half of a beautiful day to piles of paperwork. And it happened to be on his birthday too.
He let out a long sigh, his breath causing the feather quill in his hand to rattle silently. He adjusted his eyepatch and slid his gaze over to the window, gazing longingly at the retreating sunny day.
Normally, Kaeya would have pushed this paperwork onto someone else so he could deal with something more interesting. But pretty much all the other knights had their hands full. He suspected it had to do with the entire south-east wing of the Knights' HQ being shut down. According to what Kaeya heard, it was cordoned off by Noelle for intense cleaning after a mishap involving Klee and some Dusty Balloons.
That must've thrown a huge wrench in Jean's secret plans, Kaeya mused.
Kaeya knew for a fact that Jean was plotting a surprise party for him. It seemed pretty apparent that something was up the moment that extra work ended up on Kaeya's desk instead of going straight to hers like always, and it being so close to his birthday just made the timing too convenient. But whatever Jean planned probably got thrown to the wayside what with Klee's latest bombing accident. So far, the closest to a birthday party that Kaeya got was the typical workspace kind, with all his coworkers gathering in his office, well-wishing him, handing him some new pens and books and leaving a quaint little cake on his desk.
Not that Kaeya minded if there wasn't a huge celebration. At times, birthdays could be…complicated. Kaeya was perfectly content with enjoying good food and drinking the night away on his birthday. Now, that wasn't to say that Kaeya was against elaborate birthday parties. He completely relished in the challenge of surprising someone with a party months in the making, and it was fun to celebrate other people. Plus, good food and drink were almost always a guarantee anyways.
He let out another forlorn sigh as he scratched his pen against the latest mind-numbing form. Kaeya couldn't wait until the work day was done, especially since it inched into overtime. He was eager to get out and head to the tavern. He knew he'd run into his usual drinking buddies and likely get some free drinks gifted to him, with the only exception being Venti, who'd more likely try to coax a drink from him—but, the truth was, Kaeya was more interested in meeting up with Rosaria.
He missed her. She acted strangely, vaguely muttering that "an important job came up" and disappeared for the past couple of days. Kaeya wasn't sure what it could have been. He hadn't heard of any increased activity among the Abyss Order, Treasure Hoarders nor Fatui. In fact, even the slime population was at an all-time low. It was a little disappointing that she didn't invite him to come along; he would have gladly joined her. But she didn't even mention where this job was or what she targeted. Was it her usual fare of criminals or something more sinister? Did she mean to come back earlier, but then something went wrong and that's why she wasn't back yet?
Kaeya took in a breath, stopping that thought before it got any farther. He exhaled and told himself, Rosaria promised we'd have drinks on my birthday and she's not one to go back on her word. If I don't see her tonight, then I'll know something is up. He really hoped it was just that Rosaria got caught sneaking around by Sister Victoria and was grounded at the cathedral.
For as much as Kaeya tried to distract himself, thinking about Rosaria missing just reminded him of someone else he recently lost track of.
Diluc. It wasn't unusual for the man to suddenly vanish and reappear a few days later as if nothing happened. But that only happened when suspicious activity spiked. Diluc operated like clockwork, responding the moment a threat appeared and returning the moment it was gone. As it stood, there weren't any threats or odd phenomena that Kaeya was aware of, and there was no indication as to where Diluc went. The uncertainty made his stomach flip. Diluc was much harder to track down than Rosaria. For one, Diluc was more likely to have left the region entirely—he did so before, what's to say he wouldn't do it again? But he likely wouldn't, so long as the Fatui and Abyss Order are still active in Mondstadt, Kaeya reasoned.
But the biggest reason Diluc was so hard to find was because Kaeya simply lacked information. Unlike Rosaria, asking Diluc his plans directly was never a possibility. The man only begrudgingly tolerated Kaeya's help, with the most he ever accepted being during the Black Fire incident, and he'd likely reject Kaeya actively involving himself in his business. Instead, Kaeya had to keep his finger on the pulse of the region's criminal activity and estimate Diluc's reaction. Sometimes Kaeya could wring some rumors and sightings from his various contacts or get some hints from Charles.
The bartender was very loyal to Diluc, just as loyal as he was to their late father, but Charles still seemed to have a soft spot for Kaeya. Unfortunately, Charles wasn't able to offer much this time. With an apologetic look, Charles admitted he only heard that Diluc suddenly cleared his schedule on account of "imperative business" and would return in a few days. That wasn't really a guarantee of anything. Otherwise, Kaeya didn't have any leads.
Well, there was one lead. But Kaeya found it rather dubious—Donna from Flora Whisper was overheard bemoaning that she caught Diluc in disguise while on a date with a nun.
Donna wasn't exactly a reliable source of information, since she was known to fantasize about her crush and see him everywhere. And, though the two had grown distant, Kaeya was fairly certain Diluc wasn't harboring a hidden romance. As for the nun part…Kaeya couldn't help wondering if that was Rosaria. There were no details as to which nun Donna saw, so it could just as easily have been Sister Victoria as much as anyone else. Still, this meant there was a small chance that Donna spotted Diluc and Rosaria in town together. But that just rose more questions than answers. What would those two be up to? Sure, they both did vigilante work, but that was at night. And they were nowhere close to Angel's Share either. However, they did both suspiciously drop off the map at the same time, so it wasn't impossible they were collaborating on something. Kaeya certainly hoped it wasn't a secret relationship.
Kaeya scoffed and shook his head. This is getting me nowhere. I'll just have to ask Vile about it afterwork. And if that lead inevitably turned into a dead-end, Kaeya would…well, he wasn't sure. He was already going to check the tavern for Rosaria and, if Diluc wasn't there, Kaeya seriously considered checking Dawn Winery, despite his reservations.
He knew that Elzer or Adelinde were the only other ones besides Charles that would have the most accurate information on Diluc's whereabouts. He had a feeling they wouldn't even hesitate to tell him if he asked. But Kaeya visiting the winery wasn't as simple as it used to be, what with the complicated relationship between him and its owner. It was nothing short of a miracle that Kaeya was able to drink at his tavern as often as he did, even if his conversations with Diluc tended to be less than pleasant. If Diluc knew Kaeya showed up unannounced at the winery, Kaeya wasn't sure what would happen, but he was doubtful it'd go well.
He hadn't been to the winery in a long time, but he missed it terribly. Every time he sipped a Dawn Winery vintage, he recalled first-hand how those bottles were made. It was the single most welcoming place he had ever known, in no small part due to Crepus Ragnvindr. When Kaeya had been homeless in a strange land, the man took Kaeya in with open arms and didn't hesitate to raise him alongside his own son. Said son and Kaeya then quickly grew an inseparable brotherhood as flourishing as the grapes they played among. It was a shame that such a cultivation of so many good memories were so easily uprooted by a tragedy and spilled secrets. Diluc had made it very clear that Kaeya was unwelcome from then on, to which Kaeya was inclined to agree. He had come to accept it as a consequence of lying to his adoptive family, that he was not abandoned but planted as a spy by enemies to Mondstadt. The death of Crepus had broken something in Kaeya and he confessed the truth to Diluc, who yanked Kaeya out of his life like an intrusive weed. Yet, Kaeya still had a home in Mondstadt, with friends and loved ones that he was unwilling to leave unguarded. No matter how many strings he pulled in secret, Kaeya would keep them safe, and that included Diluc.
Kaeya realized that had he quite forgotten about his work and allowed his quill to dribble on his desk. The man made a dismayed scoff and flicked his quill back into its inkwell. He sighed and rubbed his temples.
Steady now. It takes time for grapes to ferment into wine, after all, he told himself. First things first, get through your work then you can consult with your contacts.
Re-focused, Kaeya took his pen back up and leaned over the latest document.
Then he promptly dropped it when his office door burst open. Kaeya reflexively formed a Cryo knife of ice in his hand, but he restrained himself from throwing it when Amber shouted, "Kaeya! There's an emergency!"
Kaeya got to his feet, "Where?"
"Follow me! Hurry!" Amber urged and darted off. Kaeya had to rush after her, scarcely able to shut the door behind him. She was really far ahead now and he had to sprint hard to catch up.
"What happened?" Kaeya called after her.
She didn't answer as if she didn't hear, and she barreled through the front doors. They ran past Porthos and Athos guarding the entrance. The men looked surprised but kept their posts.
"Come on!" Amber shouted and didn't bother taking the stairs on the left, opting to instead leap over the railing to the lower level, which Kaeya followed suit. When he landed, he lost her for a moment.
"Here! Hurry!" Amber yelled from his right. There was a two-story building, and he knew that behind it was a terrace and a windmill, but it was ultimately a dead-end. She disappeared behind the building and Kaeya followed, albeit, not as quickly as before, with a sneaking suspicion in his chest.
The moment he stepped onto the terrace, he was greeted by several voices shouting, "Happy birthday, Kaeya!"
Kaeya grinned as he regarded the sight of blue and white clothed tables set up amidst the hedges and benches, and the tables held an assortment of food, gifts and drinks. From the group of friends standing before him, a red bundle broke free, raced forward with tiny legs and bounced from the ground, straight into Kaeya's arms.
"Happy birthday!" Klee sung in his ear while her own pointed ones near-wiggled in excitement. She hugged his neck as she tackled into him, and he spun around with her to gracefully keep from falling over, laughing all the while.
Once he came to a stop, Jean then stepped forward, holding a crown-shaped party hat made of paper and flowers, including Calla Lilies. She greeted him with a simple but brimming smile. Since Kaeya's arms were full of Spark Knight, Jean placed it on his head for him.
All the while, Jean asked, "If I may ask, how long did it take you to figure out the surprise?"
"I suspected you were up to something, but I honestly couldn't figure it out until Amber kicked in my door," Kaeya answered, which got a sheepish laugh out of the Outrider. "Honestly, that Dusty Balloon explosion really threw me for a loop. You guys got me good."
Jean beamed proudly, "We were hoping it would."
Kaeya looked up to the right, observing how the Knights of Favonius Headquarters overlooked the terrace the party was situated in. He commented, "This was quite a clever façade, blocking the south-west side so I couldn't see the party preparations happening right beneath my nose."
"It was meant to just be a fabricated incident, but," Jean had the hint of a weary sigh in her voice as she added, "there appeared to be a misunderstanding that resulted in the use of actual Dusty Balloon Bombs, instead of the duds originally agreed upon."
Her eyes settled on Klee. The little girl stiffened up. Klee squirmed deeper into Kaeya's arms and half-hid in the fluff of his coat, responding, "Umm…Klee just wanted to…make it convincing?"
Jean obviously wanted to have a discussion with Klee but chose to relent. Instead, Klee was eventually coaxed off of Kaeya and he met with the other guests while food and drinks were distributed. It was a beautiful venue that took advantage of the well-tended gardens and benches that centered around a glistening fountain, all while a pair of towering stone windmills creaked gently on either side as mirthful winds passed through. Past the terrace was a picturesque view of Windwail Highlands and its massive, pointed cliffs that slanted up like stone ships, and it was easy to pinpoint the Statue of the Seven on the cliff, since a pillar of blue light extended up from it and stretched to the sky beyond. But even the view couldn't compare to the sight of being surrounded by such excellent company.
Many of the faces were very familiar and expected—like Lisa, Albedo, Noelle and Eula—but some were completely surprising, particularly the green-clad bard. Venti had elected to ignore the chairs and perched himself on the edge of a table, feet dangling off the ground, lyre strumming in his hands and the drinks table conveniently within arms' reach.
"I certainly wasn't expecting to see you here," Kaeya greeted.
The bard gasped and tapped his chest, "You wound me, Sir Kaeya. Are we not dear friends? Why else would I be here, if not to play an ode to this momentous day?"
Kaeya crossed his arms and smirked, "I imagine it'd be to embezzle Acting Grand Master Jean of wine and apples in exchange for music."
Venti lightly huffed and crossed one leg over the other, "I believe the words you're looking for are 'to offer musical services at reasonable prices.'"
Kaeya chuckled. At least the fellow was good at what he did and filled the open air with melodical plucks of strings, the notes dancing in the wind. It almost more seemed that the wind danced with the notes. But Kaeya's quickly moved on as his eye caught on a black-and-white figure lingering at the back of the party.
Kaeya's heart skipped happily and in relief at seeing Rosaria in-person. He couldn't help his large smile as he strode to her, though he tried to keep his voice at its usual light tone, "Well, there you are. And for just how long have you been back in town?"
He saw the ends of her lips subtly lift at his approach. She sipped at a drink and answered, "Not long."
"All done with your important job?" Kaeya asked, prying for details under a playful tone.
"Yup. And now I'm here," Rosaria said simply. She held out a glass of wine to him, signaling the end to that line of questioning.
It seems she wants to keep that job secret, even from me, Kaeya thought. It was unusual to be out of the loop with her, but there didn't seem to be any danger hiding behind it, so he decided to shift topics. If he couldn't ask about the mission, then he could ask around it.
"Indeed you are~" Kaeya replied as he accepted the drink. "It's rare to see you out in broad daylight. Did Sister Victoria raise any objections to your little excursion?"
Mentioning Sister Victoria usually elicited a light groan from Rosaria. However, Rosaria's reaction this time was a soft and almost gentle grunt, "She gave me the day off. Sister Jilliana and Sister Barbara practically pushed me out the door, telling me they'd cover my work and for me not to worry about my clergy duties."
"As if you ever do," Kaeya teased playfully, which briefly coaxed her smile.
"Oh, that reminds me…" Rosaria flicked out a pair of sealed envelopes between her clawed fingers and then produced a square package wrapped in cute, blue bows. "This one's a card signed by all the sisters. This other one and the gift are from Barbara."
"Aww, how thoughtful," Kaeya commented as he opened the cards, which were each full of well-wishing and blessings, thanking him for all his hard work, though Barbara's card contained cheery doodles in the margin. He didn't open the box yet and almost didn't need to. Kaeya had a feeling that it was cologne. He made fairly frequent trips to the cathedral for healing—and to pester Rosaria—so he got plenty of opportunities to chat with Barbara. They most recently discussed colognes and perfumes, and Barbara wasn't very subtle as she fished for gift ideas. Still, Kaeya was excited to see what she chose. For now, he refocused his attention on Rosaria.
He leaned towards her with a grin, "Nothing from you?"
"Nothing that can't wait," Rosaria answered dismissively. "You'll just have to be patient."
Sounds like Rosaria is as shy as ever and she wants to wait until the party thins out, Kaeya thought with a warmer smile. Perhaps her secret mission had something to do with the gift. He certainly wouldn't force her to reveal her surprise. That didn't mean he couldn't still mess with her. Kaeya replied, "Let me guess—you're going to sing for my birthday, right?"
Rosaria gave him a look like she was going to pinch off his nose, which only amused Kaeya more.
Eventually, she was spared from Kaeya's ribbing as he got dragged back to the center of the party. It then became a wonderful blur of well-wishing and getting showered with gifts.
Klee and Albedo presented their gifts together, since they were similar. Albedo's was an oil painting of Crystalflies in Stormbearer Mountains that was created with Kaeya's favorite colors. Klee's was a portrait of her and Kaeya drawn in vibrant crayon. Both were set in lovely, wood-carved frames.
Jean stepped forward with a beautiful, new desk lamp. She explained that it was ordered from Fontaine and it had dials to allow one to not only change the brightness but also the color of the light. It was currently set to a blue that shone like small Lamp Grass.
Lisa provided a candle set of varying colors and different scents. She indicated that some were excellent for winding down after a busy day while others—she added with a wink—were better used when entertaining late night company.
Amber excitedly revealed a new glider the color of grey snow that almost resembled his cape in its pattern. She said it was the 'Wings of Concealing Snow' and recounted how she picked it up during her scouting and that it stayed stable against strong, cold winds. She admitted to using it a little beforehand but insisted that it was just to test the glider for safety. Amber talked up the glider so much that Kaeya almost felt bad accepting, but Amber insisted that the best friends should have the best gliders.
Noelle bestowed a cozy, grey and blue coat. It would serve him well for any missions out in the rain or cold. If there were any tears or missing buttons, she told him that all he needed to do was ask and she would mend it immediately.
Eula declared vengeance upon Kaeya in the form of a new pair of boots, and she demanded he tremble at their finely cut black leather and sturdy soles. She stated that if these boots did not keep his feet well-protected for the next few years, then her vengeance would be twofold.
Venti neglected to bring a gift. Or rather, it wasn't a tangible gift. Venti proclaimed that, instead of a gift to carry home, it was a gift to carry in his heart. Venti then proceeded to play a birthday ballad that was as kind as it was humorous. Whether or not Venti prepared it beforehand or wrote it on the spot, no one could ever say for certain.
There were also gifts from many people not present. Sucrose shied away from parties, but she did grow the incredible flower centerpiece that was going to look great in Kaeya's living space. There were letters of birthday wishes from Fischel and Bennett boxed with artifacts they collected, with Fischel's letter being several pages and Bennett's being charred, accidentally torn then taped back together with care. Mona provided a carefully selected set of tea blends in polished jars. There was an empty present box wrapped in quality deerskin, which Amber and Klee explained was from Razor, who appeared to have misinterpreted the giftwrapping process. Blanche dropped off a bottled, custom cocktail from Diona, whose cat paw stamped card wished Kaeya a happy birthday and declared the disgusting birthday blend would also jumpstart his sobriety—only for the drink to actually taste very delicious, as usual. A letter from Lumine and Paimon apologized for not being able to return in time for his party but wished him well, and the letter was attached to a box full of souvenirs and Kamera pictures of dazzling sights from other regions. Even the food provided by Good Hunter included a sweet note from Sara, thanking him for keeping the city safe and included a coupon for a discounted meal.
Kaeya's heart swelled with so much contentment and gratitude that it was almost dizzying and his cheeks hurt from smiling so much. But as thankful as he was for everything he received, Kaeya's eye discreetly searched the gifts for something missing.
For the past few birthdays, there was always at least one, anonymous gift of specialty wine exclusive to Dawn Winery. Though, the gifts were never very anonymous to Kaeya since he had a pretty good idea of who sent them. After all, who else would have access to wine that the Ragnvindr family traditionally reserved for special occasions and banquets? It was such a small gesture and Diluc never once acknowledged it in person, but it was akin to lighting a tiny candle in a massive cave—something hopeful.
But Kaeya couldn't find it this time. Even when all of his gifts were gathered and organized, there wasn't an anonymous bottle of wine anywhere. Still smiling outwardly, Kaeya's heart plummeted so forcefully that Kaeya had to take a seat at a table, pretending his legs were tired. Not only was Diluc unaccounted for, but so was his birthday gift. His mind spiraled, Did he not send the wine because he never got the chance? Or is it because he chose not to send it?
"Hey," Rosaria's voice cut in and food appeared in front of Kaeya. The nun had moved to his side without a noise and her eyes weighed upon him. She urged in her level voice, "You should eat before you get too drunk. It's too early for that." Her cold hand pressed onto his shoulder in a warm gesture and she spoke meaningfully in his ear, "Relax."
Kaeya felt something unclench in his stomach and the breath he unconsciously held quietly slipped out. He was brought back to the party where he was surrounded by supportive, kind teammates and friends, with a very dear hand on his left shoulder. I'm not alone. Without looking up at her, Kaeya turned up his left hand to brush his fingers against hers, in gratitude. She briefly intertwined their fingers before she just as silently slipped away. Whatever is going on, we can figure it out together. For now, I can enjoy myself.
As if on cue to lift the mood, Klee and Amber leapt into the chairs on either side of Kaeya, asking his opinion on what the best circus performance is, as they were trying to settle a dispute between if it was the lion tamer or the magic show. Kaeya gladly indulged as he ate. The girls eventually agreed they both loved watching the fire performers, and then they launched into imagining if the knights were a circus instead.
Somehow, Jean was able to pluck Kaeya from them. She wanted to take a moment to properly apologize to him for having him work on his birthday and promised him the whole day off tomorrow. Kaeya laughed good-humoredly and assured her that it was worth it for the surprise. He then joked about enjoying the work so much that he just might steal it from her and leave her with nothing to do but take a day off of her own. What cracked him up was how Jean almost looked panicked at the thought.
Amidst all the teasing, Kaeya was ultimately thankful for Jean and couldn't have asked for a better friend and superior. He inwardly plotted a wonderful surprise party for her, hoping to outdo the last one he arranged. For the time being, he was simply enjoying chatting and feeling the wind on his face.
Kaeya then felt clawed taps on his shoulder. He looked over at Rosaria, who pointed at the entrance to the terrace and said, "Someone's here to see you."
In order to enter the terrace, one had to walk around a small, two-story building, and it was in the shadow of this building that Kaeya glimpsed a familiar red and black figure. Relief flooded Kaeya at the sight of Diluc, but it was followed by a light trepidation. What is he doing here of all places?
He glanced at Jean and she looked wonderfully surprised at Diluc's appearance. She must have invited him. But the party can't be the reason why he's here, can it? Kaeya's eye also went to Rosaria, who seemed oddly unsuspicious and expectant.
Diluc remained waiting by the building, so Kaeya decided to go out and see what he wanted.
There was something always a bit funny about Diluc standing in shadows. No matter how darkly he dressed or acted, his bright red hair always stuck out. It was like he didn't belong in the dark, but he still chose to dwell in it. As Kaeya approached, he realized that Diluc had some package hooked in the crook of his arm. Not sure what to anticipate, Kaeya decided to greet Diluc in his usual, melodic way of speaking, "Well, good afternoon, Master Diluc! To what do we owe the pleasure?"
"Good afternoon," Diluc greeted, his voice even.
Now that Kaeya was in front of him, it was apparent how tense Diluc was. He kept subtly shifting the package in his arm, and his eyes briefly flicked around before he finally answered.
"I came to," Diluc held out the package, which was something vertically narrow and circular bound in a fine cloth, and said, "deliver this to you."
When Kaeya accepted the item, it felt so familiar in his hands. Undoing the cloth knot revealed a wine bottle, the same specialty wine that Diluc had been gifting him.
Oh.
Oh.
Diluc is delivering my birthday present to me in-person, Kaeya realized. That was why he couldn't find it.
The simple wine bottle, which had already been precious in Kaeya's eye, somehow became even more important and he held it closer to himself. Whatever mask Kaeya had up dropped to surprise and wonder. Almost forgetting to speak, he murmured, "…Thank you."
He saw Diluc's tense shoulders inch down, relaxing slightly. Had he been worried? Kaeya wondered. His fingers wrapped further over the cool glass. Worried that I wouldn't accept?
An awkward silence grew. Kaeya, usually an expert conversationalist, grasped at what to say next. Diluc's eyes went to the side as he held his arms, apparently also at a loss for words.
Kaeya finally cleared his throat, finding his verbal footing, "Since you're here," he turned slightly, upturning his hand in an offering gesture as he put up a smile, "will you be joining for the festivities?"
Diluc looked surprised by the offer. His gaze moved past Kaeya, at the party. His lips parted and an answer was ready on his tongue. However, his eyes slowly drifted to Kaeya's left, fixating on something over his shoulder; the Knights of Favonius headquarters. His mouth shut in a hard line, emotions flashing over his face like a stuttering fire, and his gaze dropped to the side. His voice was low and heavy, almost sounding defeated, "No…not at this time."
This caused a bittersweet smile on Kaeya's lips. It was disappointing but not unexpected. Him coming by was a pleasant enough surprise, Kaeya thought. Just as Kaeya assumed that Diluc was leaving, the man suddenly spoke.
"But I have more to say to you," Diluc said, almost sharply. Kaeya became alert, now aware that Diluc had his hands clenched at his sides and his mouth formed into a harder frown. His intense gaze met Kaeya's eye, but it almost seemed more determined than angry as he said, "I came to apologize. To say that I'm—"
His eyes softened and his voice became small, "sorry. For everything."
Something seemed to break open in Diluc, because now a steam of quiet words came, "I'm sorry for how I treated you, for what I did. What I almost did. I'm sorry most of all for not saying any of this sooner."
Kaeya was stunned into silence. One could almost hear the individual threads of wind. He held all of Diluc's words in his mind but wasn't sure what to do with them, how to respond.
Diluc was apologizing. To him.
Something in Kaeya recoiled and briars of guilt and shame prickled through his veins. Disbelief and confusion escaped his lips as a faint whisper, "But, what I did, to our family—"
Diluc's hand grabbed Kaeya's arm and he flinched instinctively. But Diluc's grasp was firm, not constricting. Kaeya re-met Diluc's gaze, the red gleamed wetly but still burned with intensity, and his voice was thick with heartbreak but was resolute, "That doesn't excuse what I did. No one should treat their brother the way that I've treated you."
The word 'brother' rung in Kaeya's head, louder than everything else. His thoughts were silenced, leaving him to fully acknowledge the wine cradled in his grasp and the warm hand holding his arm. His soul stirred and felt like it was going to spill out of him. Kaeya tried to speak, not even sure what he was trying to say, but words wouldn't come. Instead, his vision blurred and something escaped his eye.
Guilt flashed over Diluc's face, and he murmured, "Oh Barbatos. I've made you cry at your own birthday party."
This startled a laugh-like noise out of Kaeya.
"No, no. I—" Kaeya's voice came out as more of a croak than he wanted. He fumbled with his words. Diluc had a hold of Kaeya's bicep, and his grip started loosening, but Kaeya lifted his forearm, now grabbing Diluc's arm. Kaeya almost clung to him, like he might fall over. Diluc seemed to sense this and held Kaeya firmly again.
Kaeya rapidly blinked to try dealing with the tears in his eye. A part of him felt so vulnerable, what with how the loving party wore down his emotional defenses and the tipsiness did him no favors. Yet, an indescribable happiness freely marched through like a wild horse that Kaeya couldn't hope to tame. Still holding the wine bottle, he lifted his hand and wiped off the tears with the back of his glove. He finally managed in a tiny voice, "Thank you. I'm sorry too."
Relief poured over Diluc. Kaeya could've sworn he saw tears prickling his eyes too. The sight almost got Kaeya crying again.
For a moment, they simply stood as they were, still holding each other by the arm. The warm breeze ran through their hair and lingered to embrace them. The moment stretched on, but Kaeya wouldn't have minded.
Eventually, though, Diluc's eyes drifted past Kaeya and his grip relaxed.
"There's much more I'd like to talk with you about," Diluc stated. "But this doesn't seem like the most opportune time. I would rather not impede on your birthday celebration, so then…why don't you come by the winery for dinner?"
Kaeya couldn't believe his ears.
Diluc added quietly, "That is, whenever would be convenient for you."
"I have the day off tomorrow," Kaeya answered, without hesitating. Surprised by his own abruptness, he then asked, "…Would five work?"
Diluc's look of surprise shifted. With his jaw set and gaze resolute, he answered, "I'll make sure that it does."
Kaeya smiled at the nostalgia of it. He knew that look. It was the kind that meant that Diluc wouldn't hesitate shredding his schedule if it meant keeping their appointment.
It was then the two finally let go of one another. Diluc straightened his gloves, likely looking for the best way to say goodbye. Diluc settled his eyes on Kaeya and said, "I shall see you tomorrow then. For time being…Happy Birthday, Kaeya."
Those six syllables tapped against his heart. Kaeya warmly answered, "See you tomorrow, Diluc."
Before Diluc left, Kaeya thought he saw a smile tug at his lips.
Kaeya stayed where he was. His head was fuzzy with happiness and disbelief. He clung to the wine bottle in his hand as it was proof that what happened actually happened. Dinner at the winery. Kaeya literally hadn't dined there in years. The gap between them had felt so vast, but Diluc just closed the distance.
He became aware of a noticeable absence of music and conversation behind him. Kaeya discreetly glanced over, realizing the flow of the party had ebbed. It seemed everyone took notice of Kaeya talking to Diluc at the edge of the party and most of their expressions were mix of concerned, curious or determined to help. Without showing his face, Kaeya made sure the traces of tears were gone and took in a deep, rejuvenating breath. He trusted the present company very much, but he didn't want them to get the wrong idea, and he wanted some time to process the conversation on his own. Kaeya allowed a broad smile to spread on his features and it wasn't a fabrication; all things considered, this had been one the best birthdays yet.
Kaeya turned back to the party, taking in the concerned faces. Kaeya assured the group, "What's all the worried looks for? The distinguished owner of Dawn Winery simply came by to drop off a thoughtful gift," Kaeya held up the wine bottle proudly. The smiles steadily returned, and Kaeya prompted, "Come now, it's a joyous occasion!"
An especially playful twinkle entered Venti's eye. His slender fingers inched towards the bottle as he inquired, "Indeed! Shall we share the joy?"
Kaeya protectively pulled the bottle out of reach, and he warned, "Don't even think about it."
This hardly deterred the bard, who retorted, "What if I sang about it instead? Might that convince you?"
Venti annoyingly persisted up until Rosaria's clawed fingers pinched his ear. The bard let out a yelp and was dragged off the table. It seemed Rosaria was trying to throw him out, since Venti exclaimed, "You can't kick out the musician!" to which Rosaria answered, "You're being more of a pest than a musician."
Jean quickly intervened before Venti was tossed off the terrace. Soon enough, things settled down and the lyre music drifted back into the air. The evening stretched on as they engaged in dances, conversation and games.
Things only winded down when the sun was barely more than a thin film of red-orange behind Windwail Highlands, and the sky overhead matched the dark, deep purple of grapes. Kaeya was banned from doing any of the clean-up and was left with nothing to do but lounge on a bench, sipping a glass of wine. Diluc's bottle was unopened and nestled next to him. He could have put it with the other gifts but decided not to. As for the other gifts, Noelle offered to carry them home for him, which she would undoubtably do so single-handedly.
He watched the steady turn of the windmills and how the light bounced off their large, white blades. His ear prickled at a familiar tune, something that Crepus hummed as he painted by the wide-open winery windows, and, when the wind blew, Kaeya's lungs filled with the sharp smell of grapes and turpentine oil.
Kaeya blinked from his dream-like nostalgia. His gaze snapped to the source of the music—Venti, who had reclaimed his table perch. Kaeya stared at him curiously. Venti simply smiled, perhaps still playfully, but there was also something gentle in it, almost knowing.
Their gazes broke when Amber tugged at Venti's cape and told him to scoot over so they could clear the table. Jean simultaneously stopped by Kaeya, checking in on him. As they spoke, Kaeya noticed that Venti was gone, nary a trace. Elusive as always, Kaeya thought.
"Would you like any of the leftovers?" Jean's question edged in his thoughts.
Kaeya answered smoothly, as if he hadn't been half-listening, "Oh, I'm not opposed if anyone wants to take anything home; I'm not that skinny, you know."
Jean smiled lightly, "Is that what some would describe you as? You have struck me as having a more athletic build."
Though Kaeya would have happily kept lounging away and chatting, he noticed a dark figure just at the edge of his sight. Rosaria stood behind one of the windmills, rather purposely positioning herself so no one except Kaeya could see her. Her eyes were very pointedly fixed on him, and he inwardly smiled.
"Well, either way, I think I'd still like to stretch my legs," Kaeya said as he stood from the bench. "You know, soak up the fresh air."
He then slipped away to Rosaria, having a feeling he knew what was coming. His suspicions were confirmed when she drew out a small, black box tied shut by a magenta ribbon with a white netted pattern. Kaeya once teased her about being shy, to which Rosaria had retorted there was a difference between being shy and private. Not that Kaeya minded sharing this moment just between them.
The box was the smallest out of everything he got today, with it being almost no bigger than a pen. When Kaeya opened the box, he was presented with an iron sword ornament, adorned by light blue gemstones. The ornament was the shape reminiscent of a peacock feather, with thorns coiled protectively around it. There were polished gemstones embedded amidst the thorns like rosebuds, up the length of the feather and the largest pieces were inlaid in the watery eye.
Kaeya admired the immaculate detail but was having trouble identifying the gems. When he touched his fingers to the ornament, his Cryo Vision stirred and the gems brightened at his skin.
"Oh!" Kaeya gasped softly. "It's Shivada Jade."
"Marjorie was out of stock, so I had to go out to get it," Rosaria explained. "I got some help with the collecting and crafting."
The implications raced through his mind, that Rosaria had to fight some massive Cryo monster, that she stepped out of her comfort zone to seek help. Most of all, the ornament was completely custom-made.
That means she made this, Kaeya realized. For me.
Instantly, he pulled his sword from his belt. The ornament had a ring and latch at the top, so it snapped onto the hilt with a soft click. It was just the right length so that the ornament didn't get in the way of his wrist. When he held up the blade, the sunset glowed against the metal, sliding down the metal feather and thorns, while the pieces of jade gleamed an unblinkingly like little blue stars. Their Cryo energy traveled through his blade like a current and connected him, resonating with his Vision and only added to the swell in his heart.
Kaeya stared and the words left him were scarcely a whisper, "It's perfect."
His eye went to Rosaria, who had been staring at him as intently as he had been the gift. She very softly exhaled, after having held her breath, and he noticed how relieved she looked by his reaction. As if I wouldn't adore whatever she gave me anyways, Kaeya thought with an amused smile. He added, "Just as perfect as you."
Rosaria scoffed softly at the compliment and appeared to brush it off. However, Kaeya decided to take his compliment more seriously. He wanted her to know what this meant to him.
He leaned in, "But I mean it."
Kaeya softly cupped her chin to turn her head back towards him, meeting his diamond eye to her pale magenta ones. His words were spoken low enough for only her to hear but with conviction stronger than the blade in his hand, "It's elegant, dependable and will be more help to me than I can even imagine. Whenever I look at this, I'll always think of you."
Her gaze widened, shining and brightened like a flower blooming in the middle of winter. Kaeya loved that expression and when she smiled, as he got to see all the guarded coldness and eye marks from sleepless nights disappear, even if just for a moment, and replaced with something happier and carefree.
Rosaria, perhaps becoming overwhelmed by the flood of emotions, then had a deep flush in her pale cheeks, and he felt the sudden warmth in her skin against his fingers. Rosaria couldn't look him in the eye anymore and sunk her chin down, half-burying her face in his hand. And she insists that she isn't shy.
"Aww," Kaeya laughed wispily, and, since she completely refused to show her face, he pecked her temple instead.
Soon enough, they were both leaning against the stone base of the windmill, watching the sun continuing to wane. While there was still light left, Kaeya took the opportunity to hold up his sword to continue inspecting and admiring the details in the ornament. He made a mental note to visit Wagner's so he could ask for the latch to be replaced with a solid, iron band that couldn't be unclasped; Kaeya had no intention of ever removing the ornament anyways.
"This certainly explains your 'important job'," Kaeya mused. "So, what'd you fight to acquire this?"
"A Regisvine in Falcon Coast. Like I said, I got some help. From a pretty unexpected place actually."
When Rosaria said this, her eyes drifted to the wine bottle that Kaeya had propped on one of the wood beams of the windmill. Things clicked together in Kaeya's head, and he looked to her in shock, "Diluc? So, you both—"
Their simultaneous disappearances, the nature of the ornament's creation and several other things suddenly made a lot more sense. Kaeya's astonishment gave way to floods of gratitude. His fingers gently brushed against the ornament, and he murmured, "Today's just full of surprises…"
His eye moved to Rosaria, who silently watched the stars and looked content. He simply admired her before he broke the quiet with a question, "Do you have any plans tonight?"
Her gaze flicked to him, "I may or may not."
"What about drinks at my place then?"
Rosaria's interest was piqued.
She answered, "That sounds manageable."
"I'd love to hear about this little adventure you and Diluc went on." Kaeya's grin broadened as he added knowingly, "I especially want the details regarding a certain embarrassing encounter I heard you both had."
Rosaria's eyes widened, "What? How did you already hear about—"
She turned her head with a huff and grumbled, "Well. It wasn't my fault. Diluc's the one that came up with the stupid cover story of a religious pilgrimage. I had no choice but to pray for the guy."
Kaeya blinked.
"A prayer?" he repeated quizzically.
"Huh? Wait, what are you talking about?"
"The rumor of a scandal at the market. Where Donna caught Diluc on a date with a certain nun."
Rosaria rolled her eyes, "Ugh. That's what she thought? We were walking to the blacksmith's to make your gift."
"Glad to know you weren't cheating on me," Kaeya said with amusement. His mischievous grin then returned, "So, what's this about a pilgrimage?"
Rosaria groaned.
"You actually prayed?"
She groaned louder.
As the sun retreated, so did Rosaria. Kaeya snatched up his wine bottle and adorned sword and followed at her heels. The cool air was punctuated by Kaeya's laughter, him prompting, "Won't you recite it for me?" followed by him uttering an airy "oof!" as she elbowed him, and, eventually, when things with the party had finally wrapped up, the click of her heels right alongside his boots, as they strolled down the nighttime streets of Mondstadt.

IT'S DONE! Thank you all so much for your kind comments and patience!
I had a lot of fun with this chapter, and a good chunk of the work went into the party scene and brainstorming who would get Kaeya what. The whole goal of this chapter was: making Kaeya as happy as possible. He's truly one of my favorite characters. And I hope you guys enjoyed the moments between Kaeya and Rosaria. I know I didn't really delve into the details of their relationship, but I imagined that they were already together, but they aren't overt about it. Also, when Diluc swore Barbatos's name, I imagine Venti turning his head to them and smiling.
It took some work making sure that his perspective lined up with what happened with Rosaria and Diluc. I went back to Chapter 6 and changed up how Donna discovers Diluc since I ended up tying it into Chapter 7.
I could ramble on about this story and how much fun I had making it, but I think I'll actually save it for a bonus chapter, where I'll include some of my notes and the story outline for anyone interested in extras. For here and now, thank you all again for your support! Let me know what you guys liked most or what stuck out to you! And above all, have a lovely night.
