AUGUST 27, 2063 – WESTPORT, CONNECTICUT, USA
I heard my alarm go off, and I stirred myself awake. I turned it off, and I quickly changed into the outfit I had set on my chair. I wanted to be casual on my first day of high school, so I put on the Trojan shirt that I won at last year's winter carnival, blue jeans, and white sneakers. Then, I went in the bathroom and put gel on my brown cowlick, making sure that it was perfect.
I walked downstairs, where I greeted my parents, and I sat down at my place at the table. The only person that was missing was my older sister Diana, who was starting college on the other side of the country in Pacific Bay, California.
"This already isn't the same," I said out loud as my parents joined me.
"We know," my mother Karena replied with a solemn look on her face.
"We all miss Diana very much," my father Wilbur chimed in. "Well, let's eat."
We started to eat our waffles and sliced apples in silence, and I thought of Diana this whole time. Diana did not have an easy summer after losing her boyfriend to a car accident back in April. I had tried to help her when she came to Todayland for the second half of summer, but nothing I said or done had helped her.
"So, have you heard from Diana since she moved to Pacific Bay?" I finally spoke up.
"She arrived in Pacific Bay last week," Dad explained. "And she's already made a friend."
"I'm not surprised," Mom said. "Diana's always been friendly."
"I'm skeptical of him though," Dad said, and Mom and I looked at him in shock.
"Dad, Diana's only met him last week!" I exclaimed. "Give both of them a break!"
"I'm with Wesley on this one," Mom said in agreement. "Did she say much about this friend of hers?"
"Just that his name is Berethor and he helped her get a job," Dad answered.
"Berethor… that name sounds familiar."
"What kind of name is that?" I asked, never hearing of the name before.
"Karena, have you met someone named Berethor on one of your journeys?" Dad asked.
"That's it!" Mom exclaimed with affirmation. "I've met a Gondorian warrior named Berethor twice before I met you, Wilbur. I fought with him and his band in Moria and then I fought with him and his band, along with Leonardo, at Helm's Deep. I fought with Berethor one more time at Minas Tirith when he saved me from the Nazgul."
"Wait a minute, how did Leo end up at Helm's Deep?" Dad asked with confusion on his face. "He's not from Middle Earth."
"The same way Mikey got into your world the day we met," Mom answered.
"Gondorian… is that Lord of the Rings?" I asked.
"That's right, Wesley," Mom answered. "But Berethor is a character in one of the Lord of the Rings video games. He was not mentioned in the movies. Anyway, I like Diana's friend already since he helped her get started."
"Yeah! Berethor sounds like a great guy," I chimed in.
"I would love to meet Diana's friend someday," Mom replied with a smile.
"He's a man, guys," Dad replied sternly.
"For heavens sake, Wilbur! You're seriously going to have a grudge against him just because he's of the opposite sex?"
"Hey, Diana lost Caleb four months ago. She needs time!"
"Wilbur, have you possibly considered that Berethor could give Diana that time to heal before making a move? Besides, Diana has said nothing about him having feelings for her. Right now, as far as I know, they're just friends."
"Guys—" I started to say, but Dad spoke over me.
"That's what scares me, Karena. That they're just friends. Friends with benefits, I'll bet."
"Wilbur Robinson, I can't believe you. You're already refusing to give Berethor a chance to be the friend Diana needs. You cannot seriously believe that Diana needs only girlfriends. Closing the door to the opposite sex is not the way to heal."
"I'm just going to go, you guys," I said after I finished my waffles.
I took my backpack and walked out the door as my parents continued to fight about Diana's new friend. I did not need that kind of stress on my first day of high school.
I was already down three blocks when I heard honking. I turned to my left to see my mom's flying car parking next to me.
"Wesley, get in here," Mom yelled with a smile on her face, and I got in with confusion on my face. "Is everything okay?"
"You and Dad fighting stressed me out," I answered as we took off.
"I'm sorry about that."
"What do you think of Diana's friend?" I asked.
"Like I said earlier, I think he's a great guy," Mom answered. "Of course, Diana's only known him for a week, so I can't really say yet. I'll have to talk to her one of these days. What about you?"
"If he helped Diana get a job, then he's good in my book," I answered. "What does his name mean?"
"Well, from what I know, Berethor's name is a combination from Denethor and Beregond," Mom explained. "Beregond was the first captain of the White Company of Gondor as well as Faramir's guard in the books. He was never mentioned in the movies either."
"Is Denethor that crazy guy in Gondor?" I asked.
"Well, I wouldn't call him crazy, but yes."
"Mom, he killed himself because he believed Faramir was dead. So, what did the character Berethor do?"
"Berethor and his band first served as a backup group in case the Fellowship were to fail," Mom explained. "They closely followed the Fellowship but then followed Aragorn and his band to Helm's Deep. He faced his past in Osgiliath and Minas Tirith before helping Aragorn save Middle Earth. From what I've known in the brief moments I've talked with him, he was noble and strong and had leadership qualities."
"Do you think Diana's friend share those same qualities?" I asked with a smile.
"I can't say yet. We'll have to hear from either him or Diana when the time comes. But for right now, you need to get to your first class."
"I love you, Mom."
"I love you too, Wes. Have a good day."
"You too!"
I got out of the car and ventured over to the Trojan statue. As I looked around, I noticed an inscription in the concrete.
Keep moving forward. -Diana Robinson
"I miss you, Diana," I said to the sky. "I hope everything's okay over in Pacific Bay."
"Wesley!"
I turned around, trying to figure out who said my name, and I saw a girl with strawberry blonde hair rushing up to me.
"Hi, Megan! It's good to see you again!"
"Likewise! Welcome to Westport High! Are you excited?"
"I am a little, but I'm nervous at the same time. Whose homeroom do you have?"
"Ms. Maddox."
"Oh yay! I have her, too. Wanna walk with me?"
"I'd like that," I replied with a smile.
"How's Diana doing?" Megan asked.
"She's already made a new friend in Pacific Bay," I answered. "And she also has a job. So, things are so far, so good over there."
"That's good. I've been worried about her all summer."
"I'm sure she'd love to hear from you," I suggested. "I'm thinking of calling her myself after school to get more information about her new friend."
"Are you being overprotective, Wesley?" Megan asked with worry in her voice.
"Nah, I just want to hear more about her new friend so that our dad can relax. Our dad's the one who is overprotective. And I don't blame him since Caleb died, but I think he's overdoing it."
"Here we are."
Megan led me into the room and we both took our seats in the middle of the room. Then, I saw the teacher walking up to me.
"Are you Wesley Robinson?" Ms. Maddox asked me.
"Yes?" I answered uneasily.
"Principal Hughs wanted me to tell you to meet her in the studio next to the library," Ms Maddox explained with a smile on her face. "But it is very nice to meet you. Are you Diana's brother?"
"I am!"
"She spoke a lot about you to me. I hope you'll enjoy your time here at Westport High."
"Thank you, ma'am," I replied as I took my stuff and headed for the library.
I headed up the stairs, and I found a boy with shaggy blonde hair approaching me.
"Wesley Robinson! It's nice to see you again!"
"Hi, Adam!"
"You came at the perfect time," Adam said with a smile on his face. "We're just about to start morning announcements."
"Fine, but I need to find Principal Hughs—"
"Don't worry. I told her to call you up here. We're buddies. I didn't want to pull you in the middle of class."
"Gotcha."
"But you are more than welcome to watch me and Principal Hughs-Burke do the morning announcements," Adam said. "Otherwise, you can read a book or browse on the computer for a few minutes."
"I'll just watch you," I replied. "I don't see a TV in the library."
"That is a good point. Well, follow me!"
I followed Adam through the library into the studio, where I found a girl with blonde hair behind the camera.
"Do you mind if I join you?" I asked her.
"Sure," the girl answered with a shrug, and I sat down next to her. "Just be sure to not say anything."
"Got it."
"Hello, Trojans!" Adam said cheerfully. "And welcome back to Westport High! For the freshmen who do not know me, I am Adam, your student body president, and this is Principal Hughs-Burke."
"Seniors, it's never too early to start applying for scholarships to help you on your adventures after high school," Principal Hughs-Burke said to the camera.
"And students, sign-up sheets are now available across the hall from the principal's office. If you have questions, feel free to find me, my twin sister Amy, Amber, or Megan. Any of us will be happy to help you get settled in your new activities, especially the new earth club that Megan is in charge of."
"Lunch is dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets with mashed potatoes and your choice of vegetable," Principal Hughs-Burke announced with a smile.
"And lastly, it is time to re-introduce the buddy system. Freshmen, you will be paired with a senior so that you get a good feel for what is going on around the school and where everything is. That is all we have today, folks, and remember: it is a great day to be a Trojan!"
"We're clear," the girl said as she finished videotaping Adam and the principal.
"Thank you, Kristen," Adam told her, and then he walked up to me. "Are you ready, Wesley?"
"Just Wes. But yes, I'm ready."
"So that was the studio and the library. We do have a library club in case you're interested, and from what I heard, we do more than read books. The gamers will also play games in here. Are you a gamer?"
"No, I'm not. But I love card games."
"Wow, you're old-fashioned!" Adam exclaimed with surprise.
"I got that from my mom," I replied as we got out of the library.
"So, did the scavenger hunt help you last winter?" Adam asked.
"It did, but I could use a refresher."
"Sure! So, down that way is the freshman hallway where all of the English classes and history classes are held. There is one math classroom up here."
Adam and I went back down the stairs.
"That's the junior hallway where we have international language classes, science classes, and classes based on different careers for juniors and seniors. And then here's the senior hallway where the remaining math classes are held."
We walked down the senior hallway down to the cafeteria.
"Obviously, there's the cafeteria, and be sure to head there early or else it will take forever for you to grab your food."
"Noted," I replied as we kept on going.
"There's the auditorium to the right. My twin sister is the student director this year, and Lord, I hope she'll be good at it."
"You don't think she'll be good?" I asked. "I've seen your sister around. She's pretty energetic."
"That's what worries me," Adam replied as we continued walking. "There's the band room to the left."
"And that's where I'll need to go for my mom to take me home."
"Well, there you go! And lastly, the gym and locker rooms. Do you have any questions so far?"
"No, everything seems straightforward."
"I have a question for you, Wes. How's Diana doing? Is school going okay for her?"
"She's just starting school today, too," I answered. "But as far as I know, Diana's doing fine and making new friends. She even has a job."
"Then Diana's all set!"
"Yes, she is. Have you and Amy decided where you're going to school?"
"Amy wants to join Rory and Ajay at Hollywood University," Adam explained. "I haven't decided where I want to go yet."
"Well, what do you want to do?" I asked.
"Dude, I have so many options. I could go into political science since I'm the student body president, but I'm not sure being a politician is good for me. I could go into physical therapy, but I just want to be there for people."
"Counseling, maybe?" I suggested. "Or, you do a pretty good job with persuasion. Maybe you could work in customer service."
"Nah, I already work at the Golden Griddle," Adam replied as we sat in the courtyard.
"Do you have a girlfriend?"
"Yes, her name's Erin. She's a sophomore at the University of New York majoring in physical therapy."
"Maybe you could be Westport High's new gym teacher. You like sports, and clearly, you like being around your classmates of all ages. Heck, you've motivated me already, even though I was in eighth grade last year."
"Physical education… I didn't think of that."
"And you'd be doing more than just being the gym teacher," I explained further. "You could also coach your favorite sports, like football."
"Well, I'm not sure about being the new gym teacher here in Westport," Adam replied with a smile. "We have Coach Shaw for that."
"So apply at the grade school! Or anywhere in Connecticut or wherever you and Erin wind up!"
"I just might take your advice, Wesley. You have a lot of perspective for someone your age."
"Thank my mom. She inspires me everyday to open my mind."
"I would have thought your dad would do that."
"Diana is Daddy's girl. I'm Momma's boy."
"Very cliché, Wes," Adam replied with a laugh.
We continued to get to know each other more until the bell rang, which meant that homeroom was over.
I met up with Adam again at lunch, and he sat a table with a sign that said HOMECOMING COMMITTEE SIGN-UP.
"Hey, Adam!"
"Wesley, hi! Would you like to sign up for the homecoming committee?"
"I don't know," I replied with a smirk.
"Wesley, I need your perspective—"
"I'm kidding! I'd love to. But I'm here because you're my buddy."
"Well, here's the schedule then," Adam said, taking out his phone and sending me a text.
"Thanks," I said, reading the text. "Well, there's one thing I'm doing that Diana did in high school: dance committees."
"Did you know that Diana was initially part of the dance committee because it was her punishment?" Adam asked.
"Yeah, I remember my dad talking about it. He was not happy. He's never happy when Diana or I get in trouble."
"Who gets in trouble more, you or Diana?"
"Diana, definitely. But she loves to put the blame on me for some reason." I paused to give Adam a raised eyebrow. "You know, there are more interesting things to talk about than Diana's punishments."
"Hi, Adam!"
I turned to see Amy, Megan, and a girl with red hair approaching our table, and I blew a sigh of relief.
"Thank you!" I exclaimed, and the red-haired girl gave me a strange look.
"I don't think I've seen you here before," the girl said as she sat down between Megan and Amy.
"I'm a freshman," I answered. "I'm Wesley. Diana's brother."
"I'm Skye. I'm a senior, and I'm so very excited to finally graduate."
"We have to get through the school year first," Amy replied excitedly. "Wesley, it's nice to see you again."
"Likewise! Thanks for saving me."
"What were you and Adam talking about?" Megan asked with a confused expression.
"My sister."
"How is Diana doing?"
"Diana's doing alright. She just started college today. I'm going to call her later to see how that went."
"I sure hope Pacific Bay will be everything Diana is looking for," Amy said solemnly.
"She's made a new friend and she has a job, so she's doing pretty well."
"Is the friend a man?" Amy asked with a gleam in her eyes.
"A whole bunch of us made a bet that Diana was going to meet a man in Pacific Bay," Adam chimed in.
"Diana would kill you if she heard that, but yes, her new friend's a man."
"You have to tell me all about him," Megan said, putting both her fists under her chin.
"I'm not the one who knows him!" I cried. "You'll have to ask Diana when she comes back to Westport."
"When do you think she'll come back?" Adam asked.
"To be honest… I'm not sure. She looked very lost when she came to Todayland last summer. She might go to Todayland for all of her breaks and not come home to Westport until next summer."
"She's gotta come back to Westport for the annual festival," Amy said with sadness in her blue eyes.
"Amy, you said you haven't heard from Michael about that, remember?" Skye reminded her, and her head went down.
"Maria was talking to me lately," Adam explained. "She said that Michael might think about cancelling their gig to give Diana more time to heal. Caleb's death hit her pretty hard."
"I hope Diana will be back to her bubbly self again," Megan said with hope in her green eyes.
"Well, I can't guarantee that will happen," I replied. "Once something life-changing like that happens, it can really change a person."
We sat in silence until the bell rang.
The very first thing I did when I got home was dialing my sister's cell phone with the hope that she'll answer. I was relieved when I saw her face on my screen.
"Wesley! Hi!"
"Hey, Diana. How was your first day of college?"
"It went pretty well. I'm taking five classes: Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Finite Mathematics, Earth Science, and Writing 101. I just finished my last class for the day."
"Do you take all five classes every day?" I asked with curiosity.
"No. I only had the psychology, science, and writing classes today. I take math and criminal justice every Tuesday and Thursday. I take the classes I took today every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The nice part is that I never have any classes later than noon."
"Wait, seriously? You're lucky. So you took your last class three hours ago?"
"Wesley, it's twelve-thirty over here," Diana corrected me with a raised eyebrow. "I'm all the way out in California, remember?"
"I hate time zones!" I exclaimed angrily, and my black-haired sister laughed. "So you still have the whole day ahead of you."
"Yes, I'm actually about to meet a friend to take a walk with him."
"You've gotta tell me about this friend of yours. Berethor, is it?"
"Yes, his name is Berethor. I met him on my first day here, and he offered to take me on a tour of the city. He gave me a housewarming basket the next day!"
"That was nice of him. What does he look like?"
"He's tall, taller than Dad. He has blue eyes, and he has both brown hair and copper hair that is not quite shoulder-length."
"How do you have both brown and copper hair?" I asked. "Isn't copper a shade of red?"
"Yes. The brown and copper are blended in. You can tell when you're outside. If you're inside or if it's a cloudy day, you can't see the copper, so his hair just looks brown."
"Interesting…"
"But yeah. He's a criminal justice student, too. And he's heard of Amy and Russell."
"Of all the things Berethor's told you about him, what's your favorite part about him?"
"He has a very noble personality," Diana explained with a smile. "When he was in high school, he was always volunteering to help people with their needs. Heck, every day, he shows up at my dorm first thing in the morning and asks me if I needed anything! The second day we saw each other, he gave me a housewarming basket, like I said. He always asks me if I got enough sleep the night before and if I wanted to go get breakfast with him."
"Is that part of your walk?"
"No, we're doing the actual walk after school, and we just walk around the campus. We're both done with our classes, so I imagine we'll talk about our day. I'm just waiting for him to get outside."
"Berethor sounds like a great guy, and I'm glad you met him. Dad doesn't seem to like him."
"What did he say?" Diana asked with a raised eyebrow.
"He and Mom had a fight this morning about why Berethor can or cannot be trusted."
"You can't be serious," Diana replied, shaking her head. "Dad hasn't even met Berethor yet. I've only known him for a week, and he has yet to give me a reason why I can't trust him. Does Dad think I've fallen in love with him?"
"I think so. He doesn't trust Berethor because of his gender."
"That's not like Dad at all! He was fine when he met Caleb for the first time."
"And maybe he will be when you introduce Berethor to us," I replied. "He's probably thinking this way because of Caleb."
"Wesley, Dad was mad at Caleb because he proposed to me without Dad's permission. How can he possibly be mad at someone he hasn't met yet?"
"That's Dad for you. He's probably overprotective of you because of everything that's happened."
"I don't need Dad's protection! I can handle this. I'm eighteen years old, and not to mention, I have my own life here. Dad needs to trust me. Just because I've lost Caleb, doesn't mean I can't take care of myself or make my own choices about my love life."
"I understand, Diana. I'm just… warning you. But if it helps, from what you've told me of your friend, I like him."
"Thank you."
"And so does Mom."
"Oh, Wesley, I've gotta go. Berethor just walked out of the building. I'll talk to you soon, alright?"
"Sounds good, Diana. I'll talk to you soon. Have a good walk."
"Thanks!"
We hung up, and I collapsed in bed, spending the next two hours debating on whether to talk to my dad about Diana or not.
