STORY #11: A Second Chance

STORIES OF REFERENCE: None

NARRATOR: Diana

MAY 7, 2066 – PACIFIC BAY, CALIFORNIA, USA

I answered the last five questions on my last final exam on my tablet, and when I was done, I returned the tablet to my U.S. history professor.

"Have a great summer, Diana," she told me with a smile on her face.

"Thanks, you too," I replied, returning the smile.

I walked out of the classroom and decided to take the stairs down to the bottom floor. I was mentally screaming with excitement that I had one more year left before I would get my bachelor's degree. When I reached the bottom steps, I found a familiar face with blue eyes and medium-length copper-brown hair waiting for me. We pulled each other in for a hug, and I felt him kiss my forehead.

"Congratulations, Diana. You just have one year left."

"You should be the one being congratulated, Berethor," I replied. "You're graduating tomorrow."

"Still, we deserve this. How would you like to go out to dinner tonight? I have a surprise planned."

"Berethor, you have the baccalaureate service tonight," I replied with a chuckle.

"My mom already blessed me," Berethor replied, and I cracked up laughing.

"Is your mom a nun or something?"

"No, but she has dreamed of being one," Berethor answered with a laugh. "But my dad's the pastor. Besides, I'd rather spend the night before graduation with you than just sitting there waiting for blessings."

"I'll tell you what: I'll go with you to the baccalaureate service and then we can go to dinner afterwards."

"Diana, I planned the surprise during the service. I wasn't planning on going."

"Is the surprise mandatory?" I asked with a smirk.

"Yes, it is. Now, what do you say?"

"Well, Berethor Wheaton, let's see what you have planned!"

I wore a purple dress that my godmother had made me for my senior prom, but I never wore it. I had a feeling tonight was going to be special, so tonight was the night to wear it. It was an A-line dress with a V-neckline and shoulder straps. I had half of my hair up in a ponytail with my bangs parted to my left side. I waited in my dorm room until I heard knocking on the door, and I opened it to reveal Berethor, who wore a black suit.

"Dang, Diana! You're gorgeous!"

"And you're handsome," I replied with a smile.

I saw that my boyfriend's jaw was dropped, so I used my fingers to close it. Then, I noticed that his hair was different.

"Berethor, what did you do to your hair?" I asked in awe.

"Do I look familiar?" Berethor asked with a grin as he brushed his bangs, which were parted down the middle and went past his eyes, with his fingers.

"Oh my goodness! You look like your character! I love it!"

"Well, I still don't have the scars he has," Berethor replied with a smile, and I ran my fingers through his bangs.

"It doesn't matter. You look even more handsome than Berethor of Gondor. Or should I start calling you Berethor of Gondor?"

He laughed as I pulled him into a kiss the same way Idrial did the two times in the video game my mom showed us, and we smiled fondly at each other.

"Are you ready?" Berethor asked, and I eagerly nodded, taking his hand as he led me to his maroon flying car.

We drove north through Pacific Bay until I saw the sign welcoming us to Ivywood Hills.

"We're going to Ivywood?" I asked with surprise.

"To be fair, you do look like a movie star," Berethor replied, and I blushed. "But yes, our reservations are in Ivywood."

We continued driving until we approached a diner that looked like it was made in the 1950s.

"The Blue Derby?" I asked with surprise. "I wonder how this will pale in comparison to the Brown Derby."

"The Blue Derby isn't just a diner," Berethor replied, and he led me inside and to our table.

I looked around the restaurant and found that Berethor was right. One spot of the diner was a 1950s-styled bar with ice cream and drinks. We walked into a lavished dining room, and we sat at a table next to the window with a gorgeous view of the Ivywood sign.

"Now if only this is Hollywood," I said in awe.

"Yeah, never dine in Hollywood," Berethor advised. "It's always crowded with the big stars, the names we know. In Ivywood, we actually have a chance to dine like stars."

"Berethor, can you afford this?" I asked.

"If I didn't, would I have taken you here?"

"Touché."

We ordered wine, water, and coffee.

"Berethor, why coffee?"

"Coffee helps reduce the effects of drunkenness."

"Oh, that's right! I remember my mom telling me she got drunk one night and my dad made her a whole pot of coffee to help her."

"How drunk was your mom?" Berethor asked with amusement.

"According to my dad, she is horrible. Like an 'almost got ran over by a train' kind of drunk. I'm not too worried though. I just turned… that age a few months ago, so I'm not rushing to have my first drink."

"I can have the waiter take the wine back if you like," Berethor offered.

"No, no, let's have some wine! It's legal for me now, and besides, this whole weekend is a celebration!"

"Allow me to pour you a glass, then," Berethor offered, taking the cork out of the white wine bottle and pouring me a glass.

I took out my phone and took a picture of our view from inside the restaurant.

"I can do you one better," Berethor said with a smile.

He took my phone and set it up against the wine bottle. He adjusted it to where the phone was taking a picture of us with the view in the background. We smiled as the timer counted down and took the picture.

"I never thought of that!" I said with surprise as I looked at the photo. "You're good!"

We ordered our food, and before we knew it, it was presented to us.

"Ratatouille?" I asked, examining Berethor's plate. "Interesting choice."

"So is yours. Chicken alfredo."

"Hey, a view like this calls for Italian!"

"How Italian are you, anyway?"

"My great-great-great grandma immigrated to America from Italy. There have been six generations of the Framagucci family since the 1920s. Well, at least I think it's Framagucci. Italy is very heavy on Grandma Franny's side. Are you Gondorian?"

"I wish!" Berethor answered with a laugh, brushing his bangs. "No, I have ancestors from Germany, Britain, Ireland, and Australia."

"I can tell you're part Australian," I replied. "You just barely have the hint of an Australian accent."

I paused, taking a bite of my pasta and chewing it.

"This is the most delicious alfredo I've ever had!"

"Better than your grandma's?" Berethor asked.

"Much! The seasoning is spot on."

We finished our dinner, and we got back in his flying car.

"So, what is this surprise, Berethor?" I asked with a grin. "I mean, besides the new bangs."

"Close your eyes," he told me, and I did as I was told.

"Where are you taking me?" I asked with a giggle.

"You'll find out," Berethor replied, and we continued to drive for a few minutes. "Okay, you can open your eyes now."

I opened my eyes… to a view of the city from what feels like a mountain.

"Oh my gosh! I've never seen a view like this before!"

I gasped as Berethor helped me out of the car. I looked to my left to find…

"The Ivywood sign? Berethor, I thought it was illegal to be here."

"That's the Hollywood sign. It's perfectly legal here in Ivywood. Hand me your phone."

"Okay, why?" I asked, giving my boyfriend my phone.

"You'll see."

I watched as Berethor also took out his camera from his car, and he positioned both against the sign on top of a small box.

"Either you really are prepared or you have good improvisation!" I replied, and he laughed in response as he finished setting up and walked toward me.

He took my hands as we both looked out at the view of the city, and then we turned towards each other. I stared into his blue eyes while he looked into my brown ones.

"Diana, there was something about you when I first saw you at the courthouse," Berethor said. "Like you had a purpose to being there. You are not like any other person, and that's what attracted me to you. You're beautiful, smart, compassionate, and so many other things that are not in my head at the moment."

I laughed.

"But the point is, I knew in that moment that we were meant to find each other, and with each passing moment, I found myself drawn to you… your kindness, your determination, your strong will. I remember your mom asking me where I see myself in five years."

"Has your vision changed?" I asked.

"No, but the vision of my wife changed, and now I know for sure…"

Berethor paused, caressing my left cheek and smiling while I ran my fingers through his copper-brown hair.

"You are my vision. Where do you see yourself in five years, Diana?"

"I see myself working on my dissertation to get my doctorate in criminal psychology, but also working with you in the Pacific Bay Police as a detective. But there's more."

I paused, moving my right hand from his hair to his left cheek.

"I see you, not only at the police department, but I see you in my home, loving me more than you love me now. And Berethor, I see you holding our baby girl high in the air, and I see her big smile, smiling at you, and you smiling back at her."

We closed the distance, giving each other a long, tender, sweet kiss. When we pulled apart, I watched Berethor get down on one knee, and he took out a black box and opened it to reveal a silver ring with a diamond. I gasped as he smiled at me.

"Diana Evelyn Robinson, will you marry me?"

I closed my eyes, imagining my future coming to life with Berethor in it with our baby girl, and I saw Caleb on the other side of the room. Caleb smiled, and he told me:

"Say yes, Diana. You have my blessing. And don't worry: Wilbur already gave Berethor his blessing."

I started crying, but I was still smiling as I put my right hand over my heart. I opened my eyes to see a concerned Berethor.

"Diana, are you alright?"

"Yes. Yes, Berethor Joseph Wheaton, I will marry you."

"You will?" Berethor asked, putting the smile back on his face.

"A thousand times, yes!"

Berethor slipped the ring on my left ring finger, and he stood up and kissed me. I happily kissed him back. We pulled apart and we both laughed as he wiped the tears away from my face.

"Berethor, I love you," I said for the first time, and he gasped as I gave him a big smile.

"Two years… I had wanted to say I love you ever since we started dating but I didn't want—"

"Berethor, I've been feeling freer every day since you came into my life, little by little. Now, I finally feel free to say it again: I love you with all my heart and all my soul."

"Diana, I love you, too."

We pulled each other in for a kiss, and he swept me off my feet as we continued to enjoy our first evening as an engaged couple.

I was packing my suitcase the next day since I was flying home to New York later when I heard a knock on the door. I walked to the door to find my fiancé wearing his black graduation cap and gown.

"Well, look at my fiancé, folks!" I said with a smirk, and Berethor laughed.

"That will never get old, you calling me your fiancé," Berethor replied with a smile before we pulled in for a kiss.

"I'm your fiancée too, you know," I told him with a wink as I put on my silver heels and escorted him out of the dormitory. "Are you ready to graduate?"

"Yes, but I'm not ready to not see you for six months."

"Wait, why?" I asked with worry.

"I'm heading to the police academy in a couple weeks," Berethor explained. "And I have to stay there until I'm a pledged officer."

"Berethor, you are the most noble man I've ever met in my life, and you have a strong heart. I know you'll be strong through this… for us."

"I know you'll be strong, too. You're starting your senior year after all."

"And then it'll be my turn through the academy."

We laughed as we approached the area Berethor was supposed to be at for his graduation ceremony.

"Hey, I love you," I told him, wrapping him in a tight hug, and he hugged me back.

"I love you, too," he replied, pulling apart and then pulling in for a kiss.

"I'll meet you back outside," I said.

"Oh, I almost forgot!" Berethor exclaimed. "My parents wanted me to tell you to meet them outside by the clock tower."

"Thanks!"

We waved before I walked away to try to find my future in-laws. I walked toward the clock tower where I found Berethor's parents: Sarah, who had red hair, and John, who had brown hair, I also found Amelia, his sister, who also had red hair.

"John! Sarah!"

They turned toward me, and they outstretched their arms as they pulled me into their arms for a hug.

"Did Berethor make it there safely?" John asked.

"Yes, he is where he's supposed to be," I answered with a smile.

"It's nice to see you again, Diana," Sarah told me, returning the smile.

"You too, Sarah. Hi, Amelia!"

"Hi, Diana. I like your dress."

"Thanks!" I replied, admiring my floral red dress. "My godmother made it for me. Are you ready to be a high school graduate?"

"I so am!" Amelia answered with excitement as we made our way inside the auditorium. "But I still have a month of school left. Right now, I'm excited for prom."

"I miss going to prom," I said with reminiscence. "Everything was always so beautiful in Westport."

"Are you heading back to Westport for the summer?" John asked.

"Yes, but only until June. My brother is still in school for a month, and besides, I need to tell my friends the good news."

"Oh? What news is that?" Sarah asked.

"Berethor and I want to tell you together."

"John, I need to use the bathroom before the ceremony starts," Sarah told him. "Can you and Amelia wait for us?"

"Sure, honey," John answered, giving her a kiss before Sarah dragged me to the bathroom.

"Sarah, what's going on?" I asked with both confusion and amusement.

"Did he pop the question?" Sarah asked excitedly, and I showed her the ring Berethor put on my finger the night before.

"How did you know?" I asked with a big smile.

"If you and Berethor were planning on telling us news together, I figured it was going to be about you two getting married," Sarah explained. "He's been talking about asking you to marry him for the last few months, and Diana, I'm so excited for you to join our family."

"Aww, thank you, Sarah! That means a lot to hear you say that."

"Well, let's head to the auditorium so that John doesn't send Amelia to find us," Sarah suggested, and I gladly took it as we headed out of the bathroom.

We joined John and Amelia just in time as the music began, and we kept an eye out for Berethor walking down the auditorium aisle and finding his seat. When we spotted him, I could not take my eyes off his copper-brown medium-length hair throughout the ceremony. But I could also not stop thinking about how proud I was of my future husband getting through his four years of school with some trials and finally earning his bachelor's degree. Berethor eventually got up and followed his peers as he went to walk the stage to get his diploma, and he sat back down.

After another hour, the graduation ceremony was over, and we waited for him outside by the doors. While I was waiting, I found myself being swept off my feet.

"Berethor, put me down!" I cried with laughter as he set me down. "Congratulations!"

"We are so very proud of you," John told him, and Berethor returned the smile.

"Well, Diana and I have some news we want to share with you," Berethor said, and then I held up my left hand which held my engagement ring.

"Berethor proposed last night, and I said yes," I told them, and Sarah and Amelia gasped.

"Congratulations!" Amelia exclaimed happily, giving us both a hug. "I can't wait for you to be my sister, Diana. You're already the sister I never had."

"Welcome to the family, Diana," John said, shaking my hand.

"Thank you, John," I replied with a smile.

"Well, I hate to break up the party, but I offered to take Diana to the airport so she can go home to her family," Berethor chimed in. "I'm sure she would want to tell her family the news."

"Berethor, why don't you go home with her?" Sarah suggested. "That way you can tell her family the news together."

"You do have two weeks before you have to be at the academy," John chimed in, agreeing with Sarah. "Why not spend a week or two with your fiancée?"

"What do you say?" I asked.

"I need to pack," Berethor replied with a grin.

"I already did that for you!" Amelia said happily. "Your suitcase is in the car."

"But I don't have a plane ticket," Berethor said.

"We bought it and put the ticket under your name," John said.

"Berethor, go with Diana," Sarah told him. "Go tell her family the news with her."

Berethor and I took one look at each other and nodded with smiles on our faces.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA

Berethor and I got off the plane at LaGuardia Airport, and when we got our luggage, we found my dad and my best friend Emma waiting for us.

"Dad! Emma!" I yelled excitedly.

Emma ran up to me and hugged me tightly.

"I've missed you so much!" Emma said with happiness in her voice.

"I've missed you too," I replied before turning to my dad. "Hey, Dad."

"Hey, princess," he replied, kissing me on the forehead. "Welcome back, Berethor. I'm very surprised to see you."

"This was a last minute decision," Berethor explained. "I was going to stay at my parents' house in Pacific Bay until it was time for me to go to the academy, but Diana had some news to share and we agreed that I would be with her to share that news."

"Well, it's very nice to see you again, Berethor," Emma replied, giving him a smile, which quickly faded when she realized what he said. "What news? Diana, what news do you have?"

"Emma and Dad, Berethor and I are getting married," I told them with a big smile on my face, and Emma let out a big squeal while my dad smiled.

"This is so exciting!" Emma exclaimed, continuing to squeal as we hugged each other and jumped up and down.

"Congratulations, you two," Dad told us, pulling each of us into a hug after I finished hugging Emma. "Oh! Karena's gotta know about this. She'd be ecstatic!"

"So would Wesley, knowing him," I replied with a laugh, and we all laughed in response.

"When's the big day?" Emma asked excitedly.

"We just got engaged last night," I answered, still laughing.

"And then I had to graduate from Pacific Bay University," Berethor chimed in. "So we haven't done a lot of wedding talk yet."

"Berethor, thank you for asking me first before proposing to my daughter," Dad told him with a smile. "You are going to be a fantastic husband to her."

He paused, turning toward me and putting both hands on my shoulders.

"It seems like only yesterday I held my little girl in my arms, not willing to let her go. Now, my little girl is a woman. And she's getting married."

"Oh, Dad."

We hugged tightly, and I felt Emma join us.

"Berethor, come here," Emma told him. "We know you want in on it."

"After all, you are part of the Robinson family now," Dad added, and I felt Berethor's arms join us as I smelled his cologne.

"Oh my goodness, who's wearing perfume?" Emma asked with a big smile on her face.

"I'm wearing cologne," Berethor answered. "I did graduate today."

"He's wearing my favorite cologne, actually," I chimed in. "He smells heavenly each time he puts on his chestnut-flavored cologne."

"Chestnut?" Dad asked with surprise. "I feel like I'm in the forest with that scent."

We all laughed as we went out of the airport and to my dad's blue flying car. When we got out of New York and into Westport, we made our way to my childhood home, and we parked the car. I saw my mom running out of the door, and I jumped out of the car, running toward her and greeting her in a hug.

"Welcome home, Diana," Mom said, kissing me on the head.

"Hey, Mom."

"Berethor? I'm surprised to see you here!" Mom exclaimed.

"Surprise!" Berethor replied with a big smile as the two of them hugged. "We have some news for you."

"We're engaged!" I exclaimed happily, and Mom gasped with delight and quickly started crying.

"My daughter is getting married!" Mom exclaimed as she hugged the two of us tightly. "Diana, I was so worried that you were going to push everything about love away after Caleb died, but Diana, you found it. You've finally healed, and you are going to be the most beautiful bride Westport has ever seen!"

"Uh… about that," Berethor and I said at the same time with our fingers pointed up.

"We haven't talked about our wedding yet," Berethor explained. "We just got engaged last night."

"And besides, I was hoping to get married in Todayland like you and Dad did," I explained. "We don't have a date yet."

"Come with me, Diana."

"I'll meet you downstairs," Berethor told me before we shared a kiss.

I followed my mom up the stairs and into her room. I watched her go through her dresses before she pulled out a white dress: her wedding dress.

"I would be honored to see you in my wedding dress on your wedding day," Mom said with a smile, and I looked over her dress in awe.

"Mom, this is the best gesture you could ever give me, but this dress was meant for you on your big day. I need to find my own."

"Or you could have Tallulah make it. She made my dress, you know."

"I could! Oh! I gotta tell her the news!"

"How fitting that we're meeting in the place we all got to know each other at?" Jade Ali asked as we gathered together in the courtyard at Westport High School.

"So Diana has some big news to share," Emma Hawkins started the announcement and I put a big smile on my face.

"I am getting married and I'm asking you girls to be my bridesmaids!"

Everyone gasped and started shouting their congratulations at me and asking me to see the ring.

"Who's the guy?" Amy Jenkins asked with a grin.

"Is he cute?" Myra Khandaar asked with dreamy eyes.

"When's the big day?" Maria Flores asked with a big smile.

"My fiancé's name is Berethor," I answered each question with a smile. "He just graduated from Pacific Bay University and will be attending the police academy on the other side of the country. Yes, he is attractive, and we don't know when the big day is. But we'll keep you posted. But what do you say about being my bridesmaids?"

"Of course!" everyone said at the same time.

"This wedding is going to be amazing!" Maria said. "We are going to have a blast planning it!"

"Are you getting married here in Westport?" Jade asked.

"Actually, I was thinking of marrying in Todayland," I answered. "Marrying after my college graduation next May. But I'll have to talk to my fiancé about that. Nothing is set in stone."

"Are we going to meet your fiancé?" Myra asked with a curious smile.

"Yes, you will all have a chance to meet him!" I answered excitedly.

"Diana's already introduced me to him," Emma chimed in. "He is very handsome."

"What's he like?" Amy asked with a grin.

"Well, he has copper-brown hair, blue eyes, he's athletic, and he's five-eleven," I answered. "He's only seven months older than I am."

"So, Diana, have you picked your maid of honor yet?" Maria asked.

"I've been meaning to ask about that," I replied, and then I turned to Emma. "Emma, you've been my guide and my best friend since I stepped foot in Westport High School. It would be an honor if you would be my maid of honor."

"I would love to!" Emma replied, and we tightly hugged each other. "This really is going to be the best wedding ever."

"You say that now," I told her with a smirk. "But wait until you get married before you say that."

"Very true," she replied, and we all shouted out ideas on what themes to use for my wedding.
