Prompt: #31DaysOfWriting Fall 2021 - October 2nd: Long Lost OTP

Reva watched the trees as they blurred past the window of Josh's truck. Colin was fast asleep in the backseat, and Dolly Parton was on the radio. In essence, all was well in the world. So why did she feel so glum?

Seeming to sense her uneasiness, Josh reached over and took hold of her hand and squeezed. "Penny, for your thoughts?"

Reva chuckled and rolled her head to look at him. "Something feels off today," she admitted, feeling her heart melt when Josh smiled warmly at her.

"You always feel that way when we leave Cross Creek," Josh replied, returning his eyes to the road ahead. "Are you sure you still want to head out west?"

"We've wanted to take this trip forever, Bud," Reva said with a sigh. As Dolly continued to sing on the radio, she reached out and played with the dial until she found something a little more her speed.

Josh laughed and shook his head but didn't comment on the classic rock that now filled the truck instead. "We can get in the truck and drive around anytime we want, Reva," he told her as he scanned the road signs for their exit.

"I think that Cassie's text is sitting heavy on my mind today, that's all," Reva explained, reaching for her purse. She dug around until finding her phone and held it tight.

"I'm sure we can hop on a plane and fly to Hawaii if that is what you want to do." Josh switched on his turn signal and began to exit the highway.

"No," Reva said, shaking her head. "That's not it. I miss Cassie, but I don't want to go to Hawaii. She said that she missed the simple life of Springfield, and I can't blame her."

"I'm not so sure Springfield was ever simple," Josh said with a chuckle, "but I can understand missing it."

"I guess you're right about that," Reva said, silently reminiscing about dancing in the fountain and driving off the bridge. "Life may not have been simple, but it led us to the road we're on right now."

"This road sure hasn't been easy, but it's been my favorite drive," Josh told Reva, glancing her way again with warmth and love in his blue eyes. "Detours and all."

"Detours, roadblocks, and even a sinkhole or two…." Reva laughed and returned the phone to her purse. "We've overcome everything to be together. I don't know how we've done it, but we have, and I couldn't be happier."

Josh brought the truck to a stop sign. The sign ahead clearly showed that the left would take them out west, but right… Turning right would lead them back to the lighthouse, back to Springfield and their home. Checking that no one was behind them, Josh put the truck into park and twisted to face the love of his life.

"So what do you say? Head out west or let the light guide us home?" Josh asked, smiling and letting Reva be the one to make a choice here. It didn't matter to him where they went so long as they were together.

Taking a deep breath, Reva weighed her options. Colin still slept soundly in the backseat, and INXS sang about never being torn apart on the radio. If they went left, Springfield would be there waiting for them, but they would miss being a part of their friends and family's lives. Turning right would lead them back to a town full of highs and lows, both good and bad.

Reva leaned forward and kissed Josh on the cheek. The answer was simple, and Josh was right; they could travel any time they wanted and the drop of a hat. Besides, Colin deserved to grow up surrounded by everyone they knew and loved.

"Okay, Bud," Reva said, a sly smile playing on her lips. "Let's go back home."
