The first week went by, the relationships evolved, and new ones were formed. On Thursday at lunch the nine of them agreed to invite a group of three to sit with them. They had commented amongst them the group seemed weird, for they didn't talk to anyone and isolated themselves from the rest of the students. Marco saw them walk in with their trays that day and called them over. The large tough-looking boy was Reiner, the tallest was named Berthold and the blond girl was Annie. They were nicer than they expected, though Annie didn't speak much.
They met the rest of the professors throughout the week and formed study groups after class. However, Eren wasn't one to want company when he tried to focus…. And when he wasn't in his dorm room or in the library behind a table full of books and notes, he would be behind one full of pipettes and beakers.
Friday evening came and the work in the lab was done. Oluo was speaking loudly telling a funny story that had happened that morning on his way there. Eld and Gunther laughed and joked too, but eventually left for the weekend. Petra on the other hand was still stuck in some calculations, she didn't even see them leave. "It's Friday, you're tired… do that on Monday." Oluo suggested with wide movements of his hands and arms that made his wavy hair dance in his head. Resigned, she agreed. "Come on, let's get some dinner." With a dispirited look on her face, she stood up and headed for the door, putting her faux leather jacket on. "Do you want to come, Eren?" The red head asked in a soft tone, although the blondish man beside her didn't look as excited with the invite. "I already have plans," the boy responded, "but thank you." In the second Ecology lecture, professor Hange took her students around campus so they could try to find small rodents and traces of their presence, like burrows and footprints. They found out there was a rugby court on campus that surely wasn't used during the night, "Guys, Friday night this is our spot!" Jean exclaimed putting his arms around Eren and Connie. Mikasa asked what they would do in such a place "Hang out, drink, grab a bite, whatever else you want to do", he answered with a mischievous grin. It was settled, they'd meet at the main building door once Eren was done at the lab and the rest had gotten back from shopping with food and drinks and headed towards the rugby court. It was tricky getting there, they had to go through a path amidst trees and shrubs. The beauty of the university was that no one even realized they were in the city, since they were surrounded by green and wildlife.
Outside the laboratory Eren heard voices yet he couldn't quite figure out what they were saying. He was sure it was Petra and Oluo, but there was a third deeper voice, "we need to discuss results." He recognized the assertive tone. Finding strange that the corridor was silent for a while, the boy looked back at the door as if asking if the professor had just left without saying a word to him. Maybe he didn't know he was there… although, the door was open and the lights were on. Eren jumped up in fright, dropping the pipette he was hanging in the support, at the sight of Levi leaning against the door frame, arms crossed over his chest, observing him. "Professor," the boy let out in an impulse, his heart racing on his throat "I didn't know you were there"
"I was waiting for you to finish" said Levi "I didn't want to scare you" Eren couldn't tell if he was trying to be funny or dead serious. "How was your first week?" Levi asked taking wide, slow steps toward Eren, who tried to answer as cordially as possible. It had been hard trying to balance everything at once, but he was strong-minded and determined to give his best at everything. "Did you quantify the proteins in the samples?"
"Yes, Petra showed me how."
"I see," he said pensive "I'll be more present next week, I had a lot on my plate" he kept getting closer without trespassing Eren's personal space. Even so, the boy's heart kept banging against his chest, his breathing altered. Once again, he felt intimidated by the shorter man, yet he couldn't say he disliked it. The thrill he got when he looked at him with those voracious eyes was new and even exciting… for some reason he was yet to understand. Maybe it wasn't how he was supposed to feel about a professor. "May I see the results?"
"I- now?" The younger boy had just shoved his notebook in his backpack and put on his cardigan.
"Are you busy?" Is this a test? Eren shook his head and pulled the notebook out again. Interested, Levi read and reread the notes and analyzed the values. "What would you do next?" the professor questioned at last.
"Who, me?" asked Eren wide-eyed.
"You, brat." He rolled his dark orbs at the boy. Eren looked up at the ceiling and back at the professor going through a million thoughts per second. He finally explained his opinion on what the following step should be and watched the man in front of him narrow his eyes and bite his lip as if pondering the outcome. "We'll try that next week" he announced as he tapped the tips of his fingers slowly on the bench. Eren watched the tendons and muscles under the skin move with each finger and followed the veins as they disappeared beneath the fabric of his rolled-up sleeve. The first buttons of his shirt were unbuttoned showing his muscular neck, and the popped collar framed the pale, severe face that seemed to be getting closer to Eren's. However, it wasn't Levi who was moving. Electricity travelled through his body landing on his chest, "professor" he couldn't hold back a whisper that slipped his parted lips sounding like a pleading.
"Have a nice weekend, Eren." Levi's eyes never looked away, like he was making sure he didn't even miss a blink from the boy. The latter, on the contrary, dry swallowed and tried to evade his gaze at all costs. He felt a rush of heat on the back of his neck, he had to get out of there, he needed fresh air. He grabbed the notebook, gripped onto his open backpack yanking it behind him and left speaking a mere "thanks" on his way out.
