The hatred from yesterday all but vanished and Annabeth was left with sadness and if she was being honest with herself, a little bit of excitement. She didn't want to think about that, really. She spent all night twisting and turning, her mind racing at a million miles.
Lucky for her, it was the weekend and she felt relieved that she could spend the day alone in her room. She woke up pretty late, considering Annabeth had a schedule and she never woke up later than 7 in the morning.
She brushed her teeth and showered, leaving her hair down to dry. She had a lot of work to do, too. Her AP assignments along with her normal ones made her spend most of her day holed up in her room, researching and writing. As soon as she finished, she realized she hadn't eaten all day and was hungry.
As if he was reading her mind, she got a text from Luke:
Luke: hey wanna go out for ice cream?
You: sure i'll be there
You: are the lovebirds coming?
Luke: yeah
You: k i'll be there in 30
Luke: see you
Of course, it was already 6 in the evening.
She walked downstairs, hoping for all it's worth, that her supposed family wasn't in the house.
She peeked into the hallway listening for any sounds signaling they were home. She didn't want to face them today.
After she was sure they weren't there she walked into the kitchen and made herself a snack. She noticed something on the counter. It was a bright yellow paper with something written on it. She picked it up and read it.
We've went to the park.
Helen.
And that was it. Annabeth rolled her eyes.
She picked up her keys, her snack and marched out of the house. She continued eating her snack as she walked downtown to the cute little ice cream shop they found by accident.
She opened the door as the little bell rang. She looked around and found Luke scrolling through his phone. She walked over to the table and tapped it. He looked up and smiled very wide. For her. Her heart nearly burst at the happiness she got from his smile. Sometimes he made her feel like the only person in the whole world who can make him smile like that.
Stop that. You're leaving for New York. You might not see him again.
She shook her head and tried to smile at him. He must've sensed something wrong because he furrowed his brows as she sat down.
"You okay?" He asked, still smiling but it was lopsided.
"Yeah!" She said, too quickly.
"Okay, what's wrong?" He asked, putting his phone aside.
"Nothing. Just that..." Shut up, shut up. "I'm moving.. to-"
"Hey, guys!" Chris cut her off. She exhaled in relief.
"Hi!" They greeted in unison at Chris and Clarisse.
The waiter served their ice creams and they all started to dig in.
"So, what's wrong, Annabeth?" Clarisse asked. Dammit! How do they always know?
"Nothi-" Annabeth was cut off.
"Annabeth here was about to tell me something before Chris interrupted." Luke said, looking at her as if to say got you!
They all looked at her expectantly. She sighed. There was no use lying to them. They knew all her tells.
"Yeah... about that..." She started.
"I'm moving to New York." She stated.
"Excuse me?"
"What?"
"Is this a freaking prank? Because it's not funny, Beth!" The last one was from Clarisse, of course.
"Nope."
"Is your family moving too?" Chris asked.
"No. I'm the only one. Apparently, my mother is alive." She said, digging her spoon into her ice cream.
"WHAT?" Luke exclaimed but it seemed forced. As if he wasn't really surprised, but Annabeth ignored it.
"I know." She said, surprisingly calm about this.
She told them about the what went down yesterday.
Clarisse and Chris left early, so she and Luke were left. They both walked out of the shop and stood outside.
"I've got something to tell you." Luke said abruptly.
"Okay?"
"I like you. And I've liked you for a long time. I know you're gonna be in New York and all but-"
"Hey, Luke?" Annabeth interrupted, surprising herself on how confident she was.
"Yeah?"
"I like you too."
And all of a sudden, she noticed they were too close to each other.
Their lips met and Luke pulled her close. She was... feeling nothing. Not even butterflies. Not even fireworks, like how she read in those novels she reads.
But as she's doing so often these days, she ignored it and kissed him back for all it's worth.
They broke apart when they couldn't breathe and smiled at each other.
"Hi." He said, nudging her with his nose.
"Hi." She laughed.
"Gods, I've been waiting for that since forever."
She's been waiting for that since forever too... but it didn't feel like anything she stayed up dreaming about. Her heart wasn't racing. It felt as if he kissed someone she didn't want to. And that confused her.
She did want this, right? She's been dreaming about this day. Then what was wrong? Was something wrong with her or him?
"So... when are you leaving for New York?" He asked, when they sat down on a bench. Their fingers were intertwined.
"In a few days, I think."
"We'll meet everyday." He declared.
"Okay." She laughed.
